HAWLEY NORTHRUP JR.

MCDONOUGH - Hawley D. Northrup Jr., 80, of McDonough, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born on March 26, 1921 in Norwich, the son of the late Hawley and Lillie (Hinman) Northrup, Sr. On June 2, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he married Pearl Folstad, who survives.

Besides his wife of 56 years, Pearl, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen and Pamela Northrup of Greene and Randy and Linda Northrup of McDonough; a daughter Marianne (Northrup) Price of Ogdensburg; a special daughter, Debra Hornbeck and her spouse, Joseph, of Jefferson; his grandchildren: Annette Northrup, Amanda Northrup, Andrea Northrup, Jordan and Trevor Price, Brian and Jennifer Wehmeyer; his sister, Evelyn Ingraham of Norwich; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Clarence and Helen Folstad of Tower, Mich., and Robert and Maxine Folstad of Brooklyn Center, Minn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Hawley retired from Hercules, formerly G.L.A., currently Unison Industries. He was a sheet metal worker and a manufacturing engineer when he retired after 37 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for four years and was stationed in Okinawa. He was a life member of Christie Rock Post #2782, VFW in Norwich and a 29-year member of Post 1478 American Legion in McDonough. He was a member of the Norwich Moose Club for many years. He was an honorary member of the McDonough Fire Department, having been a member of the fire police. He served a term as Justice of the Peace and a term as supervisor for the Town of McDonough.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the McDonough United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip Thorick, pastor, and the Rev. J. Daniel Herron officiating. Burial will be in Cincinnatus Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford from 7-9 p.m. Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the McDonough United Methodist Church of Hospice of Chenango County.

MARY LOU MARVIN

NEW BERLIN - Mary Lou Marvin, "Skip," 51, of Rome, New York, passed away Friday evening, Nov. 2, 2001 in the Rome City Hospital, following a serious illness.

Born in New Berlin, Mary Lou had been a resident of the Rome Developmental Facility since 1957, and most recently had lived in the West Embargo Residential Facility of Rome. Over the years, Mary Lou touched many lives with her warm heart, infectious smile, and loving personality.

Born July 28, 1950, in New Berlin, Mary Lou was the daughter of Leo R. (Tom) and Bernice (Washhurn) Marvin. Mary Lou is survived by her three sisters: Carletta Lois Dyer (Tina) of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Evelyn Bates and her husband Harold of Norwich, and Helen L. Bates of Cincinnatus. Two aunts, Margaret Leonard and Grace Osborn, both of Norwich, and many nieces and nephews also survive. Mary Lou was predeceased by her parents, Leo (Tom) and Bernice Marvin, and an infant brother, Terry Lee Marvin.

Private calling hours and funeral services will be held this week at the convenience of the family. Interment will follow in the North Norwich Cemetery.

Mary Lou’s family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the people at the West Embargo Home and the Rome Developmental Facility for the excellent care and true compassion given to Mary Lou and her family over the years, especially during the last several days while she was in the hospital.

JOYCE McGREGOR

SMYRNA - Joyce A. McGregor, 82, of East Main Street, passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

Born May 3, 1919 in Oneida, she was a daughter of R. Hartley and Erma Dennison Spaulding. She was a graduate of Lake Placid High School and attended Syracuse University. On May 30, 1942, Joyce was united in marriage to Donald C. "Red" McGregor in Sherrill. She was a teacher’s aide in the Smyrna Elementary School for several years, and also was a child care provider for many of the local children. She was well known as "Grandma" to many in the area.

Mrs. McGregor was one of the first women members of the Smyrna Fire Department and was currently an honorary member. She also was a member of the Smyrna Emergency Squad and had been a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Donald C. ‘Red" McGregor; eight children and their spouses: Donna Jean and Wayne Harrington of Smyrna, Mary A. Austin of Phoenix, Ariz., Roberta (Birdie) and Nelson S. Fox of Sherburne, Audrey and Terry Bennett of Smyrna, Gail and Kevin Gillette of Cortland, Janie McGregor and Gary Musser of Phoenix, Ariz., Howard (Buzz) McGregor of Savannah, Ga., and Ralph McGregor of Palm City, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, W. Jean and Fran Carroll of Wallingford, Conn.; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Calvin and Gina Spaulding of Amherst, Mass., and Otto and Myra Spaulding of Beacon; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grand children and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers: Ralph E. and Merton (Bud) Spaulding.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 from the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne followed by burial in the Poolville Cemetery.

Friends were invited to call at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. Sunday.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Smyrna Fire Department or the Smyrna Emergency Squad.

OSCAR HOWE

OXFORD - Born April 7, 1925, the son of Elmer A. Howe and Josie Buchanon Howe in Prepacton, Oscar E. Howe died Nov. 5, 2001 at the N.Y.S. Veterans’ Home in Oxford.

He was a veteran of World War II. He spent most of his life in the Sidney Center and Unadilla area. He worked most of his life in the construction business. He worked at Bendix for a few years. He loved to camp, fish and hunt. Oscar loved his family dearly and loved to have them around as well as his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: Gladys Bartlett beloved companion; sons: Ron and Cyndy Howe of Locke and Rick and Kim Howe of Venice Center; daughters: Kathleen and Chet Carr of Bainbridge; Janice and John Harrison of West Laurens, JoAnna and Richard Lata of Reidsville, N.C., and Dolores Howe and fiance Rick David of Endicott; sisters: Myrtle and Kenneth Kinne, Ruth and Richard Bristol and Isabelle Cawley, all of Sidney Center, and Marjorie and Clifton Steele of Florida; and brothers: Kenneth and Charlene Howe of Masonville and Jesse and Rose Howe of Harpursville.

He was predeceased by Sarah Howe Earle, wife and mother of his children; a brother, Raymond Howe; sister, Helen Bristol and an infant sister, Clarisse. He also is survived by 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

As per Oscar’s requests there will be no funeral services. He will be cremated and laid to rest at a later date.

A Celebration of Oscar’s life will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the West Laurens Fire House, West Laurens where family will be in attendance.

KENNETH PHILLIPS

NORWICH - Funeral services for Kenneth R. Phillips were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Richard Wright, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Norwich Branch presided with Peter Mennis giving the closing prayer. Interment followed in the South Plymouth Cemetery with the dedication of the grave given by Richard Wright.

Pall bearers were: Sheldon Rose, Rick Cross, Donald Rose, Lauren Phillips, David Rose and Chuck Rose.

MARTIN WILLIAMS

NORWICH - Martin E. Williams, 86, died at the Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone on Nov. 5, 2001.

Martin was the father of three children, two deceased and one living. He lived in the Norwich area from 1970-1982, then he moved to Ellenburg where he lived with his son, Lewis Martin Williams and daughter-in-law, Faith Williams.

He married Mary Elizabeth Lot on Sept. 6, 1937 in Grace Episcopal Church in Waverly. Mary died in June of 1982. He was employed by the US Steel Company in Elmira for 10 to 12 years when he received job injuries and had to retired from work.

He was a veteran of World War II, US Army 1943-1945. He received Silver Star for Bravery. He served in Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland. He received the service medal, good conduct medal and World War II victory medal.

He was military police and MI Rifleman. Coming back home in December 1945 he bought a farm in Barton and lived there for several years. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Nov. 10 at William W. Kehoe Funeral Home, Sherburne. Burial will be in the North Norwich Cemetery.
