Ruth F. Rulison

Mrs. Ruth F. Rulison, of Gloversville, died Wednesday (February 23, 2000) at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a long illness. She was born in Gloversville on Sept. 25, 1919, the daughter of John and Emily Hall Brundige. She was a lifelong Gloversville resident and a graduate of Gloversville High School. Mrs. Rulison worked as a clerk with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for 18 years before retiring in 1988. She was a member of Living Hope Baptist Church, Gloversville. She was predeceased by her husband Chester Rulison, who died on Feb. 22, 1979; and a half brother, Clarence Brundige. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon R. James of Delmar; one son, Kenneth Rulison of Scotia; one son-in-law, Edward R. James of Delmar; one sister, Helen Brundige of Albany; two grandsons and one granddaughter; and several cousins. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mel Emurian, pastor of Living Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Spring interment will take place in Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield.

Mary P. Salvione

Mrs. Mary P. Salvione, 95, formerly of Gloversville, died Friday (February 4, 2000) evening at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home, where she had been a patient since 1991. She was born in Gloversville on Oct. 30, 1904, the daughter of Edward and Maria Alfieri Perrone. Mrs. Salvione was educated in Gloversville schools. She was a glove sewer at area glove factories, lastly working for the Alder Glove Co. In 1944, she moved to Los Angeles. She was active in the Los Angeles Seniors Group and was named "woman of the year" on numerous occasions. Mrs. Salvione returned to Gloversville in 1988. She was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. Mrs. Salvione was married on June 28, 1925, to Alphonse Salvione, who died in 1965. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lou Hightower of Boise, Idaho; five sisters, Martha Perrella, Margaret DeSimone, Louise Hopkins, Olympia Aldi and Claudia DeCristofaro, all of Gloversville; three brothers, Edward and Robert Perrone, both of Mayfield, and Rene Perrone of Schoharie; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Elaine Selufsky; three brothers, Joseph, Peter and Mario Perrone; three sisters, Jenny Vetro, Theresa Rose and Hope Haynes. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church with Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in the spring.

Elizabeth H. Schlotzhauer

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Schlotzhauer, 91, formerly of Palatine Bridge, died Saturday (February 5, 2000) at Little Falls Hospital Residential Care Facility after a long illness. She was born on Aug. 19, 1908 in Eisenach, Germany, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Jakob Hillger. Mrs. Schlotzhauer was educated in Germany. She moved to the United States in 1926 and she settled in Palatine Bridge. She was employed as a maid. After she married, she became a homemaker. She became a US citizen in 1940. Mrs. Schlotzhauer was a member of St. John's-St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Canajoharie and the Maroon Council of Colgate University. On June 18, 1932 she married Robert K. Schlotzhauer Sr., who died Jan. 8,1992. Survivors include two sons, Robert K. Schlotzhauer Jr. and Charles A. Schlotzhauer, both of Palatine Bridge; two daughters, Anita R. Capps of Corona del Mar, Calif., and Margaret E. Schlotzhauer of Palatine Bridge; two sisters, Olga Pfaffe of Eisenach, Germany, and Marie Winter of Bad Hersfeld, Germany, one brother, Rolf Hillger of Bad Hersfeld; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; nieces; nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. John Omans, pastor #of St. John's-St. Mark's Funeral Home, will officiate. Spring burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.

Lena Marie Simonds

Mrs. Lena Marie Simonds, 87, of Gloversville, died Wednesday (February 23, 2000) at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home. She was born on Jan. 18, 1913 in Gloversville, the daughter of Lester and Grace Gifford Robbins. Mrs. Simonds was a graduate of Gloversville High School and later attended the former Broadalbin Teachers School. She attended the former Oneonta Normal School and became certified for special education by the Cornell Extension program. She was first employed as a teacher in rural one-room school houses in Allentown, Allegany County; Jackson Summit and Northampton. She spent several years home-teaching. She later worked for 15 years as a teacher in the special education department at Park Terrace Elementary School, Gloversville. She retired in 1975 after 35 years of teaching. Mrs. Simonds was a member of St. Monica Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Johnstown; Fulton County Retired Teachers Association; Emmanuel Baptist Church, Gloversville; and Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary. On Dec. 20, 1936, she married Rodney E. Simonds, who died on July 2, 1999. She also was predeceased by three brothers, Harold Robbins, Clyde Robbins and Ernest Robbins. Survivors include one son, Eric Simonds of Mayfield; one daughter, Rodena Bosch of Niskayuna; one brother, Donald Robbins of Gloversville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A calling hour will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. A service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Carole Miller, pastor of First Baptist Church, Schenectady, will officiate. Spring burial will take place in King's Cemetery, Northampton.

Allen V. Simons

Mr. Allen V. Simons, 68, of Hagaman, died Monday (February 14, 2000) at home after being stricken. He was born on April 2, 1931 in Northville, the son of Victor and Pearl Dunham Simons. Mr. Simons attended elementary school in Lake Pleasant and was a graduate of Wells High School. He resided in Lake Pleasant until he moved to Hagaman in 1954. He served in the Army during the Korean War with the 76th Engineering Dump Truck Company. He was a heavy equipment operator. He was employed by Thomas Novosell, Speculator, and later worked at Rotterdam Septic, Rotterdam Junction; Szymczak Contractors, Scotia, and later was a machine operator at Noteworthy Co., Amsterdam. He retired on April 1, 1996. Survivors include his wife, the former Theresa Czelusniak, whom he married on May 29, 1954; one son, Allen C. Simons of Seeley Lake, Mo.; one daughter, Pauline M. Caldarone of Hagaman; one brother, James Simons of Lake Pleasant; one sister, Sylvia Seney of Lake Pleasant; one granddaughter; aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam. A service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. At 11 a.m., a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Church of St. John the Baptist, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery.

Walter J. Smith

Mr. Walter J. Smith, 83, of Lassellsville, died Wednesday (February 16, 2000) at Little Falls Hospital after being stricken at home. He was born on Nov. 30, 1916 in the town of Ephratah, the son of Alpha and Bertha Spencer Smith. Mr. Smith attended Scotch Bush Free Methodist Church. He was a member of the Western Fulton County Senior Citizens, and a charter member of the Rockwood-Garoga-Lassellsville Volunteer Fire Department. He was the Ephratah town councilman from 1950 to 1965. He was a self-employed farmer and was employed for 35 years as a bus driver for Oppenheim-Ephratah schools. He retired in 1986. Survivors include his wife, the former Helen A. Cretser, whom he married on May 11, 1941; two sons, Ken Smith and Stan Smith, both of Lassellsville; two brothers, Robert Smith of St. Johnsville and Thomas Smith of Rockwood; two sisters, Lena Christman of Lassellsville and Helen Alysworth of Hamilton, Madison County; four grandchildren; several foster grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Fred Smith, Calvin Smith and Alpha Smith Jr.; and one sister, Betty Foster. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Scotch Bush Free Methodist Church, Church Road, Scotch Bush. The Rev. R.W. Williams, pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will take place in Fical Cemetery, Lassellsville.

Kenneth Spawn

Mr. Kenneth Spawn, 89, of Johnstown, died Tuesday (February 8, 2000) at home after being stricken. He was born on Aug. 16, 1910 in Johnstown, the son of Harry and Annie Walker Spawn. Mr. Spawn graduated from Johnstown High School and was a 1933 graduate of New York University. He was a certified public accountant. He was first employed at Luft and Cash Accountants, Gloversville. From 1937 until he retired in 1976, he served as secretary/treasurer of the former F.R. Rulison & Sons Leather Co., Johnstown. He was a civil defense spotter during World War II. Mr. Spawn was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Johnstown. For many years, he was active in many area bowling and soft ball leagues. On Feb. 1, 1937, he married the former Pauline Pratt, who died on Nov. 19, 1997; one grandson, Glenn Spawn, who died in 1987; and one granddaughter, Lorie Spawn, who died in 1962. Survivors include one daughter, Peggy A. Bolebruch of Gloversville; three sons, Raymond J. Spawn and Alan L. Spawn, both of Johnstown, and David E. Spawn of Eustis, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown. A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Spring burial will take place in Johnstown Cemetery.
