Chester Foster

Chester Foster, 82, of Deerfield, Fla., died May 21 in Florida. He was born on Aug. 29, 1918, in Caroga Lake. He was the son of Burtell and Anna Foster. Mr. Foster proudly served two terms in the Army as a first lieutenant. He was a carpenter and justice of the peace in the town of Caroga before he moved to Boca Raton, Fla. Until his retirement, he worked for Pan Am at San Salvador. He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Deerfield; one daughter, Carol of Buffalo; one sister, Lucy Becker of Gloversville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Harry, Wesley and Henry; and two sisters, Edith Western and Eva Sweet. The American Legion held funeral services on May 24 in Florida. Private interment will be conducted today at Boca Raton Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice.

Claudia Shirley Cross

Mrs. Claudia Shirley Cross, 83, of Yesler Way, Hillsdale, N.J., died Wednesday, May 23, at home after a short illness. She was born on Nov. 1, 1917 in Palatine Bridge, the daughter of Edward and Pearl Peeler Ambridge. She previously lived in Albany and Canajoharie. She had been a resident of New Jersey since 1981. Mrs. Cross was educated at Canajoharie High School. Mrs. Cross was employed as a assembly person at Ceramaseal in New Lebanon Center, N.Y. for 35 years and retired in 1980. She was of the Lutheran faith and a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley A. Anderson of Hillsdale; one brother, H. Gary Ambridge of Palatine Bridge; three sisters, Bessie Dillenback of the town of Palatine; Jane Coppernoll of Johnstown and Frances Shults of Canajoharie; three granddaughters, Kelly Salmon and Kristin Anderson, both of Westwood, N.J., and Karin Franz of Little Falls, N.J.; one great-grandson, Matthew John Salmon of Westwood; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She married James J. Cross on June 7, 1946 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain. He died in 1981. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the funeral home. The Rev. Gail Wolling will officiate. Burial will take place at Memories Garden Cemetery, Colonie. Pamela J. Mosher Catania

Pamela J. Mosher Catania, 50, of Third Avenue, Gloversville, died early Saturday morning at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility. She was born April 7, 1951, in Gloversville, the daughter of Fred and Mary Ambrosino Mosher. She was a homemaker and member of Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. She is survived by her son, Robert L. Catania Jr., and her granddaughter, Morgan E. Catania of Gloversville; brothers, Fred Mosher of Johnstown and Daniel Mosher of California; a sister, Mary Mosher-Rose of Montana; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Judy and Marlene Mosher. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressic will be the celebrant. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Dr. John Andrew McNamara

Dr. John Andrew McNamara, 66, of 13 Ball Road, Syracuse, died Friday at Community General Hospital, Syracuse. From 1977-98, he was superintendent of the Johnstown School District and also served as former director of grants at Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery County Board of Cooperative Educational Services. He retired in 1977. He was a member of Rotary Club and Literacy Volunteers for several years. He is predeceased by his wife, Monica McNamara, who died in May 1993. Surviving are two sons, John A. McNamara III of Denver, Colo., and James T. McNamara of Syracuse; two sisters, Kathleen Maxwell and Jeanne Gensler of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 3700 West Genesee St., Syracuse. A funeral service will be held at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A Mass will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church, Syracuse. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Contributions may be made to United Parkinson's Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

James A. Quinlan

James A. Quinlan, 78, of Goffstown, N.H., died Saturday at Elliot Hospital, Manchester, N.H., after a period of declining health. Born in Amsterdam on June 10, 1922, he was the son of Joseph and Abina Quinlan. Mr. Quinlan lived in Scotia for 40 years before moving to Manchester in 1999. He graduated from Johnstown High School and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1944. During World War II and the Korean War, he served with the United States Navy, in which he retired as a lieutenant commander. Before his retirement in 1984, Mr. Quinlan worked as a mechanical engineer with General Electric for 33 years. He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter who also enjoyed skiing and the outdoors. Mr. Quinlan was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a longtime communicant of St. Joseph Church, Scotia. Family members include his wife of 57 years, Madolein E. (Marlette) Quinlan of Goffstown, N.H.; a son, Timothy J. Quinlan of Goffstown, N.H.; a daughter, Mrs. Peter (Eileen A.) D'Agostino of Dublin, Ohio; four grandchildren; a niece; and several nephews. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union St., Manchester, N.H. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Veterans National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.

Helen M. Genatiempo, 90, a former resident of South Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, and Little Falls, N.Y., died Monday, May 28, at Wells House Nursing Home, Johnstown, where she had resided for the past five years, after a long illness. She was born on April 18, 1911 in Gloversville, the daughter of Isaac and Permelia Young LaMont. She was employed as a glove maker at the former Aris Glove Co., Gloversville, and also employed at Felt Shoe Co. of Little Falls as a machine operator. She was a member of Bleecker Street Church of Christ, Gloversville. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia J. Krajewski and Shirley J. Topping, both of Amsterdam; one sister, Doris J. Konik of Gloversville; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the wife of the late Paul C. Genatiempo, who died Feb. 9, 1997. She was also predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rt. Rev. Norman F. Strauss, rector of Trinity Anglican Episcopal Church, Gloversville, will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Wells House Nursing Home, 201 W. Madison Ave., Johnstown, or to the charity of one's choice.

Marie Dageenakis Mowrey

Mrs. Marie Dageenakis Mowrey, 67, of Johnstown, entered into eternal rest Monday evening in the loving care of her family at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Mowrey was born on Dec. 18, 1933 in Johnstown, the daughter of Anthony and Carmela Cortese Dageenakis. She attended Johnstown schools. She was employed as a leather seamstress for Jules T. Garfall Co. until 1980, then became the proprietor of Marie's Sewing Service in Johnstown for 20 years. Mrs. Mowrey was a member of St. Patrick's Church and its Altar Rosary Society, president of its Rosary Society for the last few years and co-chairman of its arts and craft festival for years; and a former member of the Teroga Tribe of Redmond Drum and Bugle Corps, all of Johnstown. She was a devoted wife and mother and grandmother to many. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Mowrey of Johnstown and Jo Marie Savage of Gloversville; five sons, Mitchell Mowrey and Kurt Mowrey of Johnstown, Anthony Mowrey of Gloversville, Steven Mowrey of Caroga Lake and Timothy Mowrey of Lafayette, Colo.; three sisters, Josephine Pritchard of Hershey, Pa., Helen Craver of Lafayette, Colo. and Ann Jacyszyn of Arvada, Colo.; two brothers, Anthony Dageenakis of Boulder, Colo. and John Dageenakis of Lafayette, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; aunts; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends, brother and sister-in-laws. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter J. Mowrey Jr., whom she married on Nov. 25, 1950 and he died March 19, 1999; and a brother, George Dageenakis. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment will take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rosary Society of St. Patrick's Church, 205 Glebe St., Johnstown, NY 12095.
