Martin J. DeSisto
February 4, 2001

Martin J. DeSisto, 85, of 384 Steele Ave. Ext., Gloversville, died Friday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since Oct. 6. He was born Feb 2, 1916, in Rotterdam, the son of Rafaelle and Giovanne Di Caprio DeSisto. He attended local schools, coming to Gloversville from Amsterdam as a young man. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Italy during World War II as an airplane mechanic. He co-owned and operated Al's Pizzeria, 20 N. Main St., Gloversville. Mr. DeSisto was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Gloversville. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Schwed, of Gloversville; a brother, Alphonse DeSisto of Amsterdam; three grandchildren, Meg Bragg of Canandaigua, Beth Sloth of Canandaigua and Amy Romeyn of Gloversville; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Bragg, Meghan Bragg, Alexander Bragg and Nicholas Bragg; two great-great-grandchildren, Brianna and Maxwell Sloth; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) DeSisto, who died Jan. 21, 1996; two brothers, Joseph and Cederic DeSisto, and one sister, Anna DeSisto. Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville. A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 189 Kingsboro Ave., Gloversville, with the Rev. David L. Tressic, officiating. Cremation is in Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. Burial is in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Harvey L. Glover

Mr. Harvey L. Glover, 68, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital following a long illness. He was born on April 10, 1932 in Oakland, Calif., the son of the late Charles B. and Marie Moak Dutcher Glover. He was employed at various leather companies during his life. Most of his life he was a professional bartender. He worked at the Eagles Lodge and the VFW post in Gloversville, and at the Concordia Club Singing Society for 43 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Eagles Lodge 482, where he served as past worthy president and trustee, member of the Gloversville American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 351, the Pine Tree Rifle Club and the Concordia Club. He was an Army veteran of Korea. He was married on July 6, 1957 to Janice Morgan Glover, who died in 1999. He is survived by five daughters, Angela J. Desrochers of Gloversville, Darlene J. Lake of Tucson, Ariz., LuAnn M. Sawyer of Caroga Lake, Pamela L. Barton of Johnstown and Cindy L. Glover of Gloversville; one son, Michael S. Glover of Gloversville; two sisters, Florence Rickard of Gloversville and Delores Glover of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, Michael S. Glover and William Glover, both of Oakland, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one son, Jefferson D. Glover; one sister, Darlene Glover, and three grandchildren. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville. A graveside service will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, in the spring.

Riley Daniel Hanson

Riley Daniel Hanson, two months old, of Tampa, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 29. Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Gina Hanson; his brother, Brady Benjamin Hanson; maternal grandparents, Joseph Bender of Tampa and Marilyn Resnick, West Palm Beach; paternal grandparents, Kenneth Hanson Sr., Tribes Hill, and Sharon Duncovich, Amsterdam. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at Blount Curry & Roel Funeral Home, West Hillsborough Chapel, 6802 Silvermill Drive, Tampa. Interment will follow at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. Ethel M. Holly Hoag

Mrs. Ethel M. Holly Hoag, 98, died peacefully at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, Feb. 3, after a long illness. Prior to her living in Saratoga, she had been a resident of the Getman Memorial Home and the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, both in Gloversville. Mrs. Hoag was born in Gloversville on April 17, 1902, the daughter of the late John and Viola Davis Shoots. She was a lifelong resident of Gloversville and was educated in Gloversville schools. Mrs. Hoag was a member of Fremont Street United Methodist Church since 1915, also its Laurel Band Class and Square Pegs Circle, and the Cayadutta Chapter 166, Order of the Eastern Star since 1927, all of Gloversville. For many years she was employed as a bookkeeper by The Burton Insurance Agency, Gloversville. In April 1921, she married Milton G. Holly. who predeceased her in 1931. They had twin daughters, Joyce Marie Holly, who died in May 1938 at the age of 12, and her twin, Jean Melise Ward. who died in October 1997, the wife of John E. Ward. Her son-in-law, Paul V. Stewart, husband of Ruth Holly Stewart, also died in 1997. She was married to Harry J. Hoag, a local realtor, in 1946. He passed away in November 1956. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Holly Stewart of Clifton Park; a son-in-law, John E. Ward of Gloversville; five grandchildren, John G. Ward and his wife, Brenda of Gloversville, Janis Ward Fovel and her husband Tyler of Medway, Mass.; Holly Stewart Swingle and her husband Richard of Manassas, Va., Marlene Stewart Cicciarelli and her husband Richard of Lisle, N.Y., Dr. James S. Stewart and his wife Kathryn of san Ramon, Calif.; as well as nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved by all. The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Farmer, pastor of Fremont Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Ruth Anne Evans, Union prof, dies
February 5, 2001

SCHENECTADY - Ruth Anne Evans, the first woman faculty-rated professor at Union College, has died. She was 76. Evans, who died Friday, had worked at the Colgate University Library from 1948 to 1952 and at Union from 1952 until her retirement on Aug. 31, 1989. Evans held positions at Union as associate librarian and acting director. For a short time, she also taught history at the college. Miss Evans was born in Schenectady, where she lived for most of her life. She was a graduate of Schenectady High School, a 1946 graduate of Smith College and a 1948 graduate of the Columbia School of Library Service. She was a member of the Schenectady Historical Society, where she held several positions, and the American Library Association. American Association of University Professors; the American Association of University Women; and the New York Library Association. Survivors include a niece, Madeleine Ann Estabrook of Waltham, Mass.; and three nephews, Carl G. Estabrook Jr. of Champaign, Ill., Joseph Evans Estabrook of Centreville, Va., and David McCrory Estabrook of Arlington, Va.

John F. Wells

John F. Wells, 80, of Amsterdam, died Sunday morning at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, following a brief illness. He was born on June 11, 1920 in Amsterdam, the son of Casper and Julia Sammons Wells. Mr. Wells received his education in the Amsterdam school system and was employed by Laddie Sanford of Sanford Stud Farms, Amsterdam, where he trained and rode thoroughbred horses and broke polo ponies. He was subsequently employed by General Electric Co., Schenectady, for 30 years and retired in 1982. Mr. Wells was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and participated in the Pacific Campaign on the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa and in the surrender of Japanese Forces in North China. Mr. Wells was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Amsterdam and a member of St. Mary's Seniors Club. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth D. Morties Wells; three sons, Thomas Wells of Saratoga Springs, Richard Wells of Amsterdam and John "Jay" Wells of Galway; one daughter, Jacqueline M. Wells Sikorski of Amsterdam; one brother, Edward Wells of Amsterdam; three grandsons, Jason Sikorski, Johnathon Sikorski and Jeremy Sikorski; one granddaughter, Collins Wells; nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be Wednesday morning at 9:15 at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed at 10 by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary's Church, 156 E. Main St., Amsterdam. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 at the mortuary. Memorial contributions in Mr. Wells' name may be made to a charity of ones choice.

John E. Bohlander

John E. Bohlander, 79, loving husband of Eleanor (Cane); brother of George, Frank, and Bob; father of Barbara (Don) Shearer and Deb Bohlander; grandfather of Jon, Chris, and Greg Shearer, passed away Jan. 31. He was a veteran of World War II, a navigator in the Army Air Corps; graduated from Clarkson and received his master's degree from Columbia University. He taught at Hofstra University on Long Island and retired from Grumman as Senior VP of Data Systems Division. John and Eleanor moved to Strongsville, Ohio in 1986. They were married for 51 years and spent each summer at their cottage on West Caroga Lake, where John was a trustee on the board of the Caroga Lake Chapel. Dorothy G. DuMont

Mrs. Dorothy G. DuMont, 81, formerly of Johnstown and Old Peck Hill Road, Gloversville, died Monday, Feb. 5, at Mt. Loretto Nursing Home, Amsterdam, after a long illness. She was born on March 21, 1919 in Johnstown, the daughter of Arthur W. and Phoebe Davis Bown. She was a graduate of Johnstown High School. She was employed as a clerical worker for the former Knox Gelatin Co. of Johnstown until its closing. She was a member of Johnstown Reformed Church. She was married to Tracy N. DuMont on March 30, 1946, who died on Aug. 29, 1989. She is survived by two daughters, Dianne Donnan of Johnstown and Carol Miller of Gloversville; two brothers, Albert Bown of Gloversville and Stanley Bown of South Pasadena, Fla; and two grandsons, Edward T. Donnan of San Francisco, Calif., and Bradley S. Donnan of Nags Head, N.C. She was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Bown, and a sister, Beatrice Longfritz. Funeral will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Ferndale Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, Johnstown. Converse Heath

Converse Heath, 97, of Gloversville, died Sunday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since Jan. 31. He was born in Colbrook, N.H. on Sept. 28, 1903, the son of Charles and Annie Converse Heath. He had been a resident of Gloversville since 1956. He was employed as a glove worker at Gates Mills Glove Co., Johnstown, for many years. He was a member of Northville United Methodist Church and had been a member of Redmen Club of Northville. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. On April 11, 1925, he married Naomi Covell Heath in Colbrook, N.H. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last April. He is survived by his wife; a son, Winston Heath of Northville; two daughters, Lucille Blunck and husband, Marvin, and Marguerite Burlingame and her husband, Waldo, all of Gloversville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Heath and a son, Preston Heath. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Northville Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville. Friends may call today 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Northville United Methodist Church.
