Harold A. Broughton

Harold A. "Hoppy" Broughton Jr., 63, of Gloversville, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on April 16, 1938 in Ballston Spa, N.Y., the son of Harold A. and Sarah LaRue Broughton Sr. He attended Ballston Spa schools and later moved to Gloversville where he resided for many years. He was employed as a cab driver for the former Demarest Cab Co. of Gloversville. He was later employed by the Beech-Nut Co. of Canajoharie, N.Y. until he retired due to ill health. Mr. Broughton is survived by his wife, Dawn Nellis Broughton, whom he married on March 19, 1977; three sons, Scott, Matthew and Todd Broughton, all of Gloversville; one daughter, Misty Broughton of Gloversville; one daughter-in-law, April Broughton of Gloversville; one brother, Joseph Broughton of Cocoa, Fla.; two half-brothers, Albert and Ernest Geppner, both of Schenectady; two sisters, Laura Slover of Scotia and Marion Smith of Gloversville; one half-sister, Leona Lawrence of Arizona; one grandson, Zachary Broughton of Gloversville; two step-grandsons, Ray and Christopher Van Alstyne, both of Johnstown; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Mr. Broughton was predeceased by a half-sister, Louella Hunt. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at noon Thursday. The Rev. Wayne Jones, pastor of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Elena Javarone Piazza

Mrs. Elena (Helen) Javarone Piazza, 86, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at her residence in Lake Park, Fla. Helen was born on Dec. 16, 1915 in Gloversville, daughter of the late Francesco and Theresa Penzone Javarone. She was raised and educated in Gloversville. She then enlisted in the Army, earning the rank of corporal. She later settled in Ilion, N.Y., where she was a homemaker and ran a successful beauty salon. She spent winters at her Florida residence and retired there in 1981. A generous and fun-loving woman, Helen will be missed by all. Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alexander and Sarah Piazza of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Javarone of Gloversville; a sister, Ann Elliott of Daytona Beach, Fla.; many beloved nieces and nephews. She was married on June 23, 1953 to James Piazza, who died on April 10, 1989. She was also predeceased by brothers, Joseph Jr., Raeffello, Anthony, Angelo, Vito, Dominic, and Ralph Javarone; and sisters, Theresa Nicholson and Rose Willert. Family and friends are invited to a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Riviera Beach. A brief ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, 5601 Greenwood Ave., Riviera Beach, Fla.

Gretchen W. Schwabrow

Mrs. Gretchen W. Schwabrow, 89, of Home Street, Fort Plain, died Monday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness. She was born on Jan. 1, 1913 in Brookmans Corners, N.Y., the daughter of Elmer and Iva Frantzman Wagner. She attended local schools and has lived in Fort Plain since 1933. She was employed as a supervisor for Luxuray Manufacturing in Fort Plain for 47 years until she retired in 1976. Mrs. Schwabrow was a charter member of Fort Plain VFW Auxiliary and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Plain. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Russell and Letty Schwabrow of Australia and Willis and Susan Schwabrow of Johnstown, N.Y.; a sister, Helen Nolly of Fort Plain; three grandsons, Robert Schwabrow of Broadalbin, Philip and Rusty Schwabrow, both of California; eight great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a grandson, Mark Schwabrow on Nov. 5, 2001. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, N.Y., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, NY. 13317.

Carlton D. Watkins

Carlton D. Watkins, 76, of Sinclair Road, Edinburg, died Tuesday morning at home following a long illness. He was born on July 22, 1925 in Rochester, N.Y. He was the son of Howard and Leota Barber Watkins. He was a graduate of Albany High School and HVCC. He had been a resident of Edinburg since 1964. He was a WWII Navy veteran serving from 1943 to 1945. He was employed as a program analyst by General Electric Co., Schenectady, for 35 years and retired in 1985. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Northville. He is survived by his wife, Jean Sabey Watkins, whom he married on July 28, 1951. Burial will take place at Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northville Methodist Church, Mountain Valley Hospice or American Parkinson Disease Association. Arrangements are by Northville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth Williamson

Elizabeth (MacIntyre) Williamson of Norwood, Mass., died Jan. 25, wife of the late George S. Williamson; mother of Edward Williamson of Sharon, Mass., Sally Williamson of Cambridge, Mass. and Anne Martin of North Attleboro, Mass.; sister of the late James MacIntyre of Johnstown, N.Y. Also survived by three grandchildren. She was born on Aug. 30, 1913 in Johnstown, N.Y., the daughter of Edward Campbell and Florence Scofield MacIntyre. Mrs. Williamson graduated from Johnstown High School in 1931 and from Johnstown Business School in 1933. She was employed by Upstate Telephone Corp. of New York for five years. She was the founder and a member of the Johnstown, N.Y. chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, an international cultural organization for young women between the ages of 18 and 35. Mrs. Williamson was a member of the First Congregational Church of Norwood, and a former member of the Norwood Hospital Auxiliary and the Norwood Women's Club. In 1982 Mrs. Williamson's daughter, Florence Sarah Williamson published and illustrated "For Sharing," a collection of some of her mother's poems. Mrs. Williamson was united in marriage to George Streeter on June 3, 1939 in the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, N.Y. He predeceased her on Feb. 13, 1979. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at First Congregational Church, 100 Winter St., Norwood. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the First Congregational Memorial Fund at the above address. Arrangements are by May Funeral Service, Norwood.

Theodore Zuckerwar Sr.

Mr. Theodore Zuckerwar Sr., 75, formerly of Gloversville, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Albany Memorial Hospital. He was a resident of the Julie Blair Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Albany. He was born on April 12, 1926 in Gloversville, the son of Julius and Cecelia Landy Zuckerwar. He served in the Navy during WW II. He was employed as a glove cutter by Grandoe Glove Co., Gloversville for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Marguerite Beatty of Winter Haven, Fla.; son, Theodore "Teddy" Zuckerwar Jr. of Gloversville, N.Y.; brother, Robert Zuckerwar of Gloversville, N.Y.; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Zuckerwar was married on July 9, 1949 to Eleanor Borst, who died on Nov. 24, 1993. He was also predeceased by brothers, Paul Zuckerwar, Milton Zuckerwar and Donald Zuckerwar. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Bruce Hoose will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Myra Meade

Myra Meade, 56, of Luther Highway and formerly of Amsterdam, died Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a long illness. She was born on Oct. 17, 1945 in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of James A. and Edith (Person) Gardiner. Myra grew up in Northville and was a graduate of Northville High School. She then resided in Gloversville for several years, then Amsterdam and most recently moved to Saratoga Springs. Until her illness, she was employed as a sewing machine operator at Breton Industries in Amsterdam. She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and crossword puzzles. Survivors besides her husband Robert include three sons, William H. Meade of Ballston Spa, James A. Meade of Saratoga Springs and Robert A. Meade of Cohoes; a daughter, Kelly M. Collins of Saratoga Springs; three brothers, John and Arthur Harrington, both of Little Falls, and Charles Gardiner of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Cook of Troy; nine grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins. There will be no calling hours or services. Burial will take place in the spring at the family plot at Edinburg Cemetery, town of Edinburg. Arrangements are by Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs.

Albert Pellegrino

Albert Pellegrino, 88, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born on Oct. 15, 1913 in Fonda, N.Y., the son of Marcus Pellegrino and Balbina Compagnana. Mr. Pellegrino graduated from Gloversville High School in 1932 and resided in the Gloversville area most of his life. He was employed by several leather companies in the Fulton County area and retired from the former Pan American Leather Co. of Gloversville. He was a lifetime member of the local Amalgamated Textile Workers Union AFL-CIO where he held several offices including shop steward. He coached Little League baseball and enjoyed a variety of sports. He was an outstanding high school quarterback and an amateur boxer. He also enjoyed playing cribbage. He is survived by his son, Marc Pellegrino of Albany, his son, David and wife Julia of Woodstock, Vt., his son, Stephen and wife Melissa of Gloversville, his son, Karl and wife, Amy of Chalfont, Pa.; his daughter, Lucinda and her husband, Robert Olmstead of Troy, his daughter, Sharron and her husband, Jon Thompson of Gloversville; his sister, Lee M. Pellegrino of Gloversville; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by is grandchildren, Sophia, Christopher, Zachary and Jared Pellegrino, Kim Woloszyn, Kelly Masline, Sean, Shane and Joshua Thompson, Adam Esposito, Chantal Schermerhorn, Gabrielle Gable, Nicholas and Quinton Spaulding. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Lois B. Harding-Pellegrino; his half brothers, John and Guy Gisondi; his brothers, Dominic and James Pellegrino; and his sister, Marie Campbell. There will be no prior visitation from the funeral home. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the North Main Street United Methodist Church chapel. The Rev. Dr. Alan Rhodes will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.
