George W. Miller
January 14, 2001

Mr. George W. Miller, 68, of Gloversville, died Friday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after being stricken. He was born in Johnstown on Feb. 22, 1932, the son of Harry E. Miller and Grace A. Conklin. He was educated in Gloversville schools. Mr. Miller had been employed by Frank Young Automotive and by Bleyl and Sons Lumber, both of Bleecker. He retired in 1994. Survivors include his mother, Grace Coffey, of Guilderland; three sisters, Nellie Holt of Albany, Christina Price of Rensselaer and Betty Rhodes of Meco; his companion, Mira L. Young of Bleecker; nieces, nephews, cousins and one aunt. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. R. W. Williams officiating. Spring burial will be in the Bleecker Cemetery.

Anthony P. Podolec

Mr. Anthony P. Podolec, 88, formerly of Amsterdam, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after being stricken at his residence at the Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility. He was born on Dec. 13, 1912, in Amsterdam, the son of John and Mary Suszec Podolec. He was educated locally and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Podolec served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. and Fiberglass Industries. He worked for Ward Products Co. before retiring in 1978. Mr. Podolec was a member of St. Stanislaus Church. Survivors include one son, Robert Podolec of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Stacia Hiatt of Cedar Park, Texas, and Helen Machinski, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Leo Podolec of Amsterdam and Paul Podolec of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Celia Fritz of Amsterdam; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Emily Slezak, whom he married on June 1, 1935. She died on Nov. 18, 1996. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam. Services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Theodore W. Creglis Jr.

Theodore (Bear) W. Creglis Jr., age 66, of New Turnpike Road, Fort Plain, N.Y., died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. He was born on Aug. 7, 1935 in Amsterdam, the son of Theodore W. and Eva Hovak Creglis. He was educated in the Amsterdam school system, and was a Chicago College graduate. Mr. Creglis served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed for more than 20 years by the Contel Corp. of Johnstown, N.Y., retiring in the early 1990s. Mr. Creglis was very active in the Meals on Wheels program and a member of the Ephratah Rod and Gun Club, the Gloversville Eagles, the American Legion Post 377 of Broadalbin, and a past officer of its 40 & 8 club. He was a member of the Broadalbin V.F.W. and a member of the Sammonsville Volunteer Fire Department. He was predeceased by his parents. Mr. Creglis is survived by his wife, Evelyn Van Denburgh Creglis; one son, Warren and his wife Hope Creglis of Gloversville; one sister, Helen and her husband Joseph Belamarich of Chesapeake, Va.; one aunt, Hommie Witkowski of Broadalbin; several step-children, many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; two nephews, one grand-nephew, two grand-nieces and two step grand-nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Extension Steele Avenue, Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Amsterdam. Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Robert L. Lowenthal

Robert L. Lowenthal, 76, of Mayfield, died at home, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, after a long illness. Bob was born June 11, 1925, in Gloversville, N.Y., son of Arthur and Vernol Lowenthal. He was a member of the Gloversville High School Class of 1943, went into the Marine Corps in 1944 and served on the USS Vincennes during World War II, and completed his GED after his discharge. He married Beverly Jones of Gloversville on June 29, 1946. Bob worked for Lavores and Shaffell tanneries in the 1950s and 1960s, and then learned piano tuning and repair through a home-study course and was self-employed as a piano tuner/technician from the early 1970s to his death. He also drove a bus for Mayfield Central School from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Bob enjoyed music and played piano in a band in his 20s, and again during the last several years in the band "A Touch of Class." Playing the piano was an important part of his life, and he found great enjoyment in his music. He owned the Lowenthal Music Center music store from 1985 through 1989. Bob also enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry, and he built his own house with help from friends and family in 1954. Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly; children Bob and his wife Joy of Williston, Vt., Jim and his wife Kim of Gloversville, Kathy Robinson and her husband Montgomery of Bonita Springs, Fla.., John of Gloversville, Gary and his wife Kym of Monticello, Fla., and his grandchildren Ben, Andy, Abe, Joshua, Jason, Nathanael, and Holly. A Celebration of Life services will be held at North Main Street United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, with a time of fellowship following the service at the church. Memorial donations may be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, or to Foothills Youth Services Inc., 227 W. Main St., Johnstown, NY. Arrangements are by the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc. in Gloversville.

MaryEllen Wager Ringler

Mrs. MaryEllen Wager Ringler, 62, of South Judson Street, Gloversville, died Saturday, Jan. 12, at home following a long illness. She was born on July 27, 1939, in Gloversville, the daughter of George and Ellen Nichols Wager. She was employed as a home health aide and was a Gloversville election inspector for many years. She was previously an active member of the former Juniorette Drill Team of Fulton County and a former member of the Johnstown American Legion Post No. 472 Auxiliary. On Oct. 13, 1956, she married Kenneth Ringler, who survives. She is also survived by her daughter, SueEllen Sofka, and her husband, Fred, of Gloversville; a brother, Donald Wager, and his wife, Alice, of Johnstown; three sisters, Beverly Henry and her husband, Harold, of Johnstown, Carol Kuntzsch and her husband, Bob, of Sprakers, and Janet Serviss of Anaheim, Calif.; a granddaughter, Jessica Sofka; and a grandson, Fred Sofka III. Mrs. Ringler was predeceased by her brothers, George Wager, William Wager and Robert Wager. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Dr. Alan C. Rhodes and the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Theresa R. Semione

Theresa R. Semione, age 75, of Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. She was born on Dec. 2, 1926 in Glens Falls, N.Y., the daughter of John C. and Anna Mahrenholz Matthews. She graduated from Gloversville High School and later received an R.N. degree from the Nathan Littauer School of Nursing. She was employed as a nurse for both the old and new Nathan Littauer Hospitals, the Extended Care Facility of Nathan Littauer Hospital, and the Fulton County Infirmary. Mrs. Semione retired from nursing in 1984. She was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Gloversville, and the Nathan Littauer Nursing Alumni. Her hobbies were reading, animals, and she was an avid card player. Mrs. Semione was predeceased by her husband, America (Jake) Semione, whom she married Nov. 14, 1948. He died in 1986. She was also predeceased by one brother, John J. Matthews. Mrs. Semione is survived by four sons and two daughters, James J. and his wife Barbara Semione of Gloversville, John S. and his wife Donna Semione of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Linda M. and her husband Tom Gilbert of Caroga Lake, Joseph M. and his wife Kelly Semione of Gloversville, Peter M. Semione and his companion Laura Walker of Gloversville, Susan A. Semione and her companion Rich Helwig of Gloversville; one sister, Anna Pedrick of Gloversville; eight grandchildren, Amy, David, John Jr., Michael, Nicholas, Katie, Matthew and Emily Semione; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 8:45 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church at 9:30 am, with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak as celebrant. Spring interment will take place at the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions can be made to the Gloversville Free Library or the S.P.C.A., Stevers Mills Road, Broadalbin, NY.

Gertrude DeAngelis

Mrs. Gertrude DeAngelis, 82, formerly of Gloversville, died Friday at The Connecticut Hospice, Branford, Conn., following a long illness. She had resided in nursing homes in Connecticut for about 20 years. She was born on July 9, 1919 in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Alfred and Hazel Parsons Pettit. She was employed by Grandoe Glove Co. of Gloversville. She was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by a granddaughter, Connie Benton and her husband Gary of Gloversville; and two great-grandchildren, Justin Benton and Sierra Benton. Her daughter, Beverly Jean Clark died in 1998. She was also predeceased by many brothers and sisters. There will be no calling hours. Burial took place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville. A private service was held today at the convenience of the family.
