Aurelio W. (Bill) Fiorillo, 70, of Garden Street, Amsterdam, died Friday at Glens Falls Hospital after a short illness.

He was born in Amsterdam Aug. 9, 1926, the son of Vincenzo and Marianne LaPorta Fiorillo. He was a 1944 graduate of the Amsterdam school system and was a lifelong city resident.

Mr. Fiorillo was employed as a machinist at General Electric in Schenectady, retiring in 1986, and served as shop steward of AFL-CIO 301. He then worked for John D. Marcella's Appliances until the onset of his illness.

Mr. Fiorillo was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Marathon in the Asiatic and South Pacific Theater.

He was a member of Amsterdam VFW Post 55 and was past commander. He was a member of Posts 39 and 701; a past chairman of the Amsterdam Veterans Council; he served as liaison with the City of Amsterdam Veterans Council, serving on many committees for the memorial parks. He was active for many years organizing veterans parades; he served as co-chairman of the 175th anniversary celebration; he served on the recreational committee and was a coach in the Wee Men's Baseball League.

Mr. Fiorillo was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and the former St. Joseph's Church; a member of the Holy Name Society and the St. Anthony's Society, having served two terms as president; he was a former member of the cemetery committee and served as chairman; he was co-chairman of many church spaghetti dinners; served as lector and Eucharistic minister of the church; he was a member of the Mount Carmel Senior and a member of the Amsterdam chapter of the Full Gospel Fellowship.

Mr. Fiorillo was an avid bowler with the St. John's and Sunday Night Couples leagues; and played basketball and softball in the Amsterdam Recreation League for many years. He was a member of the Mount Carmel and Armory Grill bocci leagues.

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Fiorillo, in 1908, and a grandson, Vincent Michael Fiorillo, in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, the former Norma Carbone, whom he married June 13, 1948; three daughters, Patricia Hook of Atlanta, Kathleen Spraker of Perth and Marianne Witho of Amsterdam; a son, Vincent Fiorillo Sr. of Amsterdam; two sisters, Louise Sisario and Mary Sluzas of Amsterdam; six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris Kravis
Aug. 9, 1996

Mrs. Doris W. Kravis, 75, of 48 Pawling St., Hagaman, died Friday morning at her home after being stricken.

Born May 16, 1921, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Arthur and Daisy Wentworth Clapper. She was a lifelong area resident and was a 1938 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

She was employed for 19 years as the clerk for the Village of Hagaman, retiring in 1991. 

She was a member of the Calvary Reformed Church in Hagaman and its women's group.

She was married to Victor A. Kravis Feb. 16, 1941.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Thomas Kravis of Benson; two daughters, Sharon Kravis of Hagaman and Kristine O'Leary of Dorset, Vt.; a brother, Carl Clapper of Tribes Hill; two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Susan Crane officiating. Burial will be in Hagaman Cemetery.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Josephine Swart
Aug. 9, 1996

Josephine G. Swart, 78, of Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital.

She was born in Amsterdam June 19, 1918, the daughter of Joseph L. and Grace Holiday Denison. She was a lifelong area resident and was educated in the Amsterdam school system.

Mrs. Swart was co-owner of the former Swart Painting and Wallpapering Co. Inc., and was most recently associated with The Color Shop in Palatine Bridge.

She was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was one of the founding members of the Montgomery County Chapter of Liberty, served as a member of the board of directors from 1969 to 1985, and was a member of its residential committee.

Survivors include her husband, Arden C. Swart, whom she married May 4, 1941; a son, David D. Swart of Amsterdam; two daughters, Deborah Cannizzaro of Washington Township, N.J., and Penny Swart of Amsterdam; a sister, Anne Denison of Amsterdam; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Office of the Burial of the Dead and Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Division Street, Amsterdam. The Rev. Christopher Smith will officiate.

Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Robert Bellinger
Aug. 8, 1996

Robert G. Bellinger, 78, of Route 30A, Charleston, died Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after being stricken at his home.

Born June 15, 1918, in Charleston, he was the son of Daniel G. and Elsie Blood Bellinger. He was a lifelong area resident and was educated in the Voorhees School District and the Fultonville Free School.

He owned and operated the Bellinger Homestead Farms in Charleston, retiring a number of years ago.

At one time, he was a member of the Glen Grange. He was also a member of the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension and also the Draft Horse Association of Massachusetts.

He attended the Glen Reformed Church.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur R. Bellinger, Charleston, Stewart R. Bellinger of Sprakers and Robert J. Bellinger of Blossvale; one stepson, Daniel W. Lynaugh of Amsterdam; a half-sister, Mabel Bellinger Rizzone of Clearwater, Fla.; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and five great-step-grandchildren.

The funeral is 1 p.m. Monday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, with the Rev. Charles B. Hesselink officiating. Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Joseph Zupkevich
Aug. 8, 1996

Joseph Zupkevich, 79, a former resident of Liberty Enterprises, died Thursday at the Montgomery County Infirmary after a long illness.

He was born in Amsterdam March 17, 1917, the son of Steven and Anna Raila Zupkevich. He attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Zupkevich was affiliated with Liberty Enterprises for many years until his admission to the Infirmary two years ago.

He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin, and two sisters, Eleanor Caputo and Edna Kopik.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Caputo of Scotia; a niece, Linda Williams of Syracuse; and several cousins.

Funeral services are 9 a.m. Monday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, with the Rev. James Gulley officiating.

Burial will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.

Nicholas Procopio
Aug. 9, 1996

Nicholas J. Procopio, 71, a former resident of Amsterdam, of 2213 Cypress Island Drive, Pompano, Fla., died Friday morning at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton, Fla., after a long illness.

He was Born July 1, 1925, in Syracuse, the son of Flora and Louise Denato Procopio.

Mr. Procopio was a graduate of North High School in Syracuse and lived in Syracuse until 1965, when he moved to Amsterdam. He moved to Florida in 1972. While living in Amsterdam, he was employed by Karl Shoes for seven years, and while in Florida he was employed as a senior stock clerk for Harris Computer Corp. in Fort Lauderdale, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Procopio was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving with the 2140th Army Air Force and attaining the rank of sergeant.

He was a member of the former St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Rinaldo Procopio, whom he married May 27, 1967; two sons, Nicholas J. Procopio of Council Bluff, Iowa, and Michael Procopio of Clay; four daughters, Nila D'Uva of West Monroe, Doreen Wnuk and Linda Snell, both of Amsterdam, and Lucinda Padrick of Jupiter Farms, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara Strezlecki and Connie Annicharico of Syracuse; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. James Gulley officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam.

John Libertucci
Aug. 9, 1996

John A. Libertucci, 64, of New Street, Amsterdam, died late Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Weehawken, N.J., Feb. 14, 1932, the son of Michael and Victoria Corso Libertucci. He moved to Ravena as a child and was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and the Hudson Valley Technical Institute.

Mr. Libertucci was employed as a computer technician for 35 years for Unisys of Albany, retiring in 1992.

He moved to Amsterdam in 1963.

An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and a member of its Holy Name Society and the St. Anthony Society. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 209 and a member of the Trailblazers Square Dance Club.

He was married to the former Gilda Altimari April 16, 1955.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Michael John Libertucci of Glenville; two daughters, Diane L. Diamond of Amsterdam and Marigrace Ryan of East Hampton; a brother, Anthony Libertucci of Ravena; a sister, Michele Reilly of Ravena; five grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Calling hours are Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam. The Holy Name Society and St. Anthony Society will gather at 7:45 p.m. to conduct services.
