WALIZER - 50TH

Mr. and Mrs. Elery H. Walizer of Ulysses, PA will observe their 50th wedding anniversary July 12, 2005. They were married by Rev. Ralph S. Krouse in the First Methodist Church at Bellwood, PA on July 12, 1955. Mrs. Walizer, the former Carolyn M. Chelgren is the daughter of the late Karl A. and Gwendolyn Chelgren of Camp Hill, PA. Carolyn graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1953. She retired from Northern Potter School District in 1996 after 43 1/2 years teaching vocal and instrumental music, elementary and junior high art and library. While in the library she became the first person in the schools of the Northern Tier to transfer the book inventory to a computer for the purpose of automating library tasks. Throughout her career she also taught individual classes in health, 7th grade mathematics, reading and mechanical drawing I and II. Mr. Walizer is the son of Madaline A. and the late Harry L. Walizer of Lock Haven, PA. Elery graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State University. He, too, retired from Northern Potter School District after 45 1/2 years having taught science and mathematics courses and served 17 years as high school principal. The Waltzers' have always been involved in extracurricular work at school and civic work in the community. Carolyn was girls varsity volleyball and basketball coach, yearbook advisor and did staging for class plays and school musical productions. She was the first woman to be elected to the Ulysses Borough Council where she presided for eight of her ten years. It was during those years the town's sewage and water systems were installed. Carolyn also helped organize the Potter County Solid Waste Authority serving as secretary-treasurer. Most recently she has been a member of the Northern Potter School Board for the past eight years and representative of the Seneca Highlands Intermediate Nine Board for seven years. Elery coached boys JV and junior high basketball and girls JV volleyball. He served many years as class advisor, student council advisor and director of class plays. Together they co-advised the varsity club. Mr. Walizer has been treasurer of Boy Scouts of American, troop #530 for 30 years, President of the Ulysses Library Association for 10 years and a life-time member of Tri-Town Volunteer Fire Company serving as Treasurer the past 10 years. Until recently, they have been fortunate to be able to travel extensively. After first visiting all 50 states, they traveled in 31 foreign countries. A few of the highlights were: visiting with relatives in Sweden, a nature and historic tour of Sri Lanka with the National Audubon Society, the Panama Canal, spending time at Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines and Amazon River while in Peru, a weeks stay in an Eskimo village at Angmagssalik in eastern Greenland, a Kenyan safari with the National Science Teachers Association and the animal paradise of the Galapagos Islands. The Walizers Ś are the parents of two sons, Herbert L. (Teresa) of Jacksonville, FL and Elery J. (Charlinda) of Pennsdale, PA. They have seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
