NEW MARSHFIELD - James A. Gabriel, 76, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster.

Born Nov. 10, 1926, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Edman and Erma Pierce Gabriel. He was a World War II veteran, a former employee of Fairfield School for Boys and Rockwell International, a 50-year member of Constitution Lodge 429 F&AM and a member of Order of Eastern Star, both in New Marshfield.

Jim is survived by his wife, Forrest F. McKinley Gabriel; sons and daughters-in-law, Terrance C. and Helen E. Gabriel of Satellite Beach, Fla., Phillip “Mark” and Patty A. Gabriel of Amanda; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Shirley A. Gabriel of Columbus, and Conrad “Keith” and Mary Jo Gabriel of New Marshfield.

Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Home in Amanda, with Ted Giese officiating. Burial will be in Amanda Twp. Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Jean L. Thomas
Born Feburary 21, 1941
Died: Saturday, July 12, 2003
Age: 62

GALLIPOLIS - Jean L. Thomas, 62, of Gallipolis, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Gallipolis.

Born Feburary 21, 1941, in Davin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy Albert Bias and Sallie Lunsford Bias.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Wayne Thomas, of Gallipolis; children Roy Eblin, Joseph Van Cooney, Clifford Van Cooney, Anthony Van Cooney, Debra Van Cooney, Sandra Evans; and stepchildren Rob Thomas and Lori Rice.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire.

Judith Sue Henderson

Age: 61

McARTHUR - Judith Sue Henderson, 61, of Columbus, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Born July 12, 1942, in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Meredith C. and Oma Payne Henderson.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Mount Zion Cemetery, Vinton County.

Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur.

Anna Marie Welch Cozzens
Died: Thursday, September 25, 2003
Age: 87

FLEMING - Anna Marie Welch Cozzens, 87, of Fleming, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Marietta Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 14, 1916, in Cutler, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Welch.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Ganson and Charles Lee Cozzens, and four daughters, Janet Goddard, Lela Richard, Penny Dalton and Carolyn Sue Owens. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Cozzens.

Services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Cheserhill. Burial will be in Bartlett Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

John J. Deible
Died: Thursday, September 25, 2003
Age: 74

LOGAN - John J. “Jack” Deible, 74, of Logan, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Logan.

Born Oct. 30, 1928, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Deible. He is survived by sons Bill and John Deible, and a daughter, Darlene Huffines.

Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, with military rites by the Combined Veterans Organizations of Hocking County.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of services.

Benjamin F. Upton
Died: Thursday, September 25, 2003
Age: 84

REEDSVILLE - Benjamin F. Upton, 84, of Reedsville, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Born July 14, 1919, in Leon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Watson Everett and Lizzie Mae Keefer Upton. He is survived by his wife, Iva Upton; a daughter, Mary Cole; and a son, Benjamin Upton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bette Chaffee.

Services will be Sunday, 1 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens, Pomeroy, with military services by Tuppers Plains VFW Post 9053.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kathryn V. Reed
Died: Wednesday, September 24, 2003
Age: 68

CORNING - Kathryn V. Reed, 68, of 166 Adams St., Corning, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at 1:40 p.m., at Genesis Hospice, Morrison House, Zanesville.

Born Jan. 14, 1935, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late John and Velma Laudermilt Young. Mrs. Reed was a housewife and a former resident of Mason, W.Va. She was a member of the VFW auxiliary of Mason, and the American Legion auxiliary of New Haven, W.Va.

She is survived by her husband, Cecil Reed of the home; two sons, James Reed and Billy (Darla) Reed of Corning; three granddaughters and two great-grandsons; eight brothers and six sisters.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Tivner, and a grandsons, two sisters and a brother.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Oakfield Cemetery, Route 13E, with the Rev. Raymond Lemity officiating.

Leura E. Willison
Died: Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Age: 97

ALBANY - Leura E. “Granny” Willison, 97, of Albany, formerly of the Nelsonville area, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.

Born March 26, 1906, in Boone County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lacy and Mary Jerrell. She was the widow of Pearl Willison. Leura was retired from Crane Plastics.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Garnett Willison of Nelsonville; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Janet and Roger Crow of Athens, Brenda and Daniel Ferguson, Carl Willison, Steven and Felicia Willison, Debra and Ray MacCombs, all of Nelsonville, Donald and Erma Mays of Wellston, Danny Mays of Carbon Hill and Doug Mays of Columbus; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Pearl Willison; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dan Mays; a sister, Elsie Barker; a brother, Hershel Jerrell; and three infant siblings.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Minister John King officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Helen McAfee Dry
Died: Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Age: 84

ATHENS - Helen McAfee Dry, 84, of South Shannon Avenue, Athens, passed away peacefully at Kimes Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Athens on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 23, 2003.

Born June 16, 1919, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Bertie Roy and Bertha Marsh McAfee.

A 1937 graduate of Athens High School, she was employed in the offices of Drs. John and Edward Sprague prior to her marriage to Claud J. Dry, who was co-owner and founder of Midget Motors starting in 1945. She then assisted her husband in the daily operations of the business. They had lived on Shannon Avenue from the 1940s.

Mrs. Dry is survived by a son, Daniel J. (Margaret) Dry of Louisville, Ky.; granddaughters Hayden and Meagan Dry of Louisville; a stepdaughter, Norma Knoll Dupler of Ocala, Fla.; two stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren; and a nephew, Mike McAfee of Newbury, N.Y.

She was a lifetime member of King Midget, a member of Athens First Christian Church, the Mixed Adult Sunday School Class, Ohio Women’s Ministries and Christian Women’s Fellowship, a former member of Business and Professional Women’s Club and a volunteer at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claud J. Dry, in 1984; a sister, Kathleen McAfee; and a brother, Joseph McAfee.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Joseph L. Eubanks Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday two hours prior to the service.

Leura E. Willison

Age: 97

ALBANY - Leura E. “Granny” Willison, 97, of Albany, formerly of the Nelsonville area, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.

Dorothy E. Imler
Died: Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Age: 82

SHAWNEE - Dorothy E. Imler, 82, of Shawnee, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at her home.

Born Nov. 30, 1920, in Newark, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Mable Dixon Ulrich. Mrs. Imler was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed fishing, traveling and flower gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Claude “Junior” Imler; a son, Claude (Elaine) Imler of Shawnee; daughters Linda (George) Gossman of Corning and Kathy O’Neal of Columbus; a brother, William Ulrich of Newark; sisters Norma Bailey of Newark, Eunice (Tom) Radu of Blacklick and Judith (John) Carver of Bordentown, N.J.; granddaughters Sharon (Jeff) Gaddis of Shawnee, Kris (Steve) Lyons of Danville and Kelley Gossman of Corning; grandsons John Imler of Lancaster and Chip Gossman of Pickerington; great-grandsons Josh and Tyler Gaddis, and Jonathan Imler; a great-granddaughter, Sidney Lyons; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Curt Imler.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, 118 W. Walnut St., Shawnee, with the Rev. Sanford Short officiating. Interment will be in Shawnee Cemetery.

Ralph D. Pinkerton Sr.
Died: Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Age: 79

McCONNELSVILLE - Ralph D. Pinkerton Sr., 79, of Mark Rest Center, McConnelsville, formerly of the Bartlett area, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the center.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Warner and Katie Sharpe Pinkerton. He was a farmer in the Bartlett and Palmer areas for most of his life, and attended Bartlett Schools. He served in the Navy during World War II, was a member of American Legion Post 389 at Beverly and a member of the VFW.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Jr. and Suzie Pinkerton and Joe and Lisa Pinkerton, all of Palmer Twp., and Ed and Linda Pinkerton of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Donald Sampson of Waterford, Eryn and Pat Barrett of Vincent; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Peggy Pinkerton of McConnelsville.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John D. Pinkerton; two grandsons, David and Daniel Pinkerton; three brothers, Woodrow, Ray and William Pinkerton; and two sisters, Fawnee Pinkerton and Martha Koker.

Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at McCurdy Funeral Home, Beverly, with evangelist Zack Waite officiating. Burial will be in Mount Herman Cemetery near Bartlett, with military services conducted at the graveside.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
