John G. Allio
ASHTABULA – John “Jack” Griswold Allio, 91, died Saturday, August 1, 2009 in the Hospice Unit of Ashtabula County Medical Center after a long illness.
The son of John and Pearl (Griswold) Allio, he was born February 7, 1918 in Erie PA. A 1935 graduate of Conneaut Lake High School, PA, he retired from Koski Construction as a General Manager after 25 years of service. After retirement in 1975, he moved to Florida where he lived until returning to Ashtabula in 2008.
He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ashtabula and was a former member of the BPO Elks #208. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and a good game of golf with his friends.
He is survived by his son, Jack Eugene Allio of Ashtabula; two grandchildren, Stacy Allio and Jaclyn Allio; four great-grandchildren, Chance, Alek, Hope, and Sofia; and his former wife, Jean (Bartone) Allio of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Imogene; brother, Jim Allio; his first wife, Anne (Kuban); and his parents.
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held at this time. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
The family would like to thank the staff at Country Club Retirement Center and Hospice for the wonderful care they have given John.

Arne E. Roivas
ASHTABULA – Arne Ernest Roivas, 93, died Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Country Club Retirement Center.
Born March 13, 1916, in Ashtabula, the son of Mikko and Aino (Antilla) Roivas, he graduated from Harbor High School in 1935. He earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio Northern in 1939.
Prior to his retirement, he worked at the A&B; Dock for many years as master electrician and was also the co-owner of Mid City Electric in Ashtabula.
He enjoyed big band music, reading, and was well versed in the Finnish history of Ashtabula. He was one of the 4:00 P.M. uptown McDonalds gang and loved to meet his friends for the daily dish. Arne was very knowledgeable in many, many subjects and enjoyed sitting and talking with people about his experiences. He loved his cat, Molly, and was devoted to caring for his family.
His survivors include his children, Cecilia (Ralph) Young of Painesville, Michael Roivas of Potomac Falls, VA, and Susan Nichols of Gainesville, VA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Brucie, Joseph Walrath, Anthony Young, Lindsey and Shannon Roivas; and five great-grandchildren, Karli Rose, Jack, Caden, Cal, and Mack.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Butch) Roivas; one brother, Leo Roivas; and his parents.
A service will be held 10 AM on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel, Carpenter Road, Ashtabula. Rev. Karen Tews, Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will follow.
Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH 44004.

Clara E. Gentile
ASHTABULA – Clara E. Gentile, 89, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center Hospice Unit.
She was born June 8, 1920 in Conneaut, the daughter of Felix and Mary Bartone and had been a life-long area resident.
A 1939 graduate of Conneaut High School, she was a strong community supporter and volunteered at voting booths for many years. A bank teller for over 16 years, she was employed at the Northeastern Ohio/Ameritrust National Bank west side branch prior to her retirement in 1982.
A long-time member of St. Joseph Church, she was a lifetime member and the treasurer of the Anita Garibaldi Lodge #722 in Ashtabula and belonged to Catholic Daughters of America. A member of the YMCA Senior Program, she was very active at the Ashtabula Senior Center. She was also a lifetime member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
She is survived by her children, Richard D. Gentile of Ashtabula and Jeffrey C. Gentile of Kettering; grandchildren, Jordan M. Gentile of Findlay and Arllyss M. Gentile of Cincinnati; her brother, Louis Bartone of Conneaut; and two sisters, Margaret Licate of Columbus and Julie (Albert) Spinelli of Erie, PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1969, Carmen Gentile, whom she married July 6, 1940; son, William A. Gentile in 1993; sister, Antonette C. Ferrio; and her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula with Fr. Philip Miller presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula.
Calling Hours will be held from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Zaback-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect, Ashtabula. The Anita Garibaldi Lodge #722 will conduct their ritual memorial service at 8 PM.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.

Gerald G. Thomas
ASHTABULA – Gerald G. Thomas, 76, East Center Street, North Kingsville, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009 at his daughter’s residence in Ashtabula.
The son of Ivan and Helen (Getsy) Thomas, he was born in Painesville on September 2, 1932. He attended Rowe High School and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Gerald was a driver for Linde Gas and retired from Koski Construction as a Heavy Equipment operator/engineer after 30 years of service.
He was a member of Operating Engineers Local #18, as well as a member of the Moose, Eagles, and the East Ashtabula Club. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed any type of sports activity. Fishing and spending time with his family and friends brought him great enjoyment.
He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Thomas-Arnold; sisters, Corrine Bonderant of Wickliffe and Charlene Carnahan of Redford, MI; brother, Darrell (Tracy) Thomas of Conneaut; and his dear friend and former wife, Sue Thomas; son-in-law, Ed Arnold; former sister-in-law, Sandy Herron of Ashtabula; brother-in-law, Tom (MaryAnn) Welton of FL; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his niece, Kimberly Bescoe; and former brother-in-law, Dick Herron.
Private memorial services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, with Rev. Frank Loeffel, Associate Pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God, officiating.
Per Gerald’s request, there will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Road, Ashtabula, OH 44048.
Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula is in charge of arrangement.

Theda M. Andersen
ASHTABULA -Theda M. Andersen, 85, of Norwood Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at her home.
She was born Nov. 17, 1915, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Kennedy) Blackwell, and had been an area resident since 1957, coming from Illinois.
She married Thor W. Andersen on June 19, 1937.
She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Ashtabula, where she was a member of the choir, the Mary Margaret Guild, the Alter Guild and the Church Women United. She was past matron and a 50-year member of Lake Erie Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Ashtabula Genealogy Society.
Mrs. Andersen enjoyed bird watching, sewing, crossword puzzles and watching game shows.
Survivors include her son, Michael of Howland; two daughters, Judy Andersen of Ashtabula and Sharon Sabatine of Sault St. Marie, Mich.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Schultz, Gilda Marie Miller, Michael Andersen, Laura Musser and Kirsten Pascal; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; a daughter, Catherine Monda in 1989; a son, Bruce, in 2001; and two sisters, Flora and Georgie.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4901 Main Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Constance D. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Ashtabula Township.
Calling hours are 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with an Eastern Star service at 4:45 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Ashtabula County. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.

Harold Pringle
ASHTABULA - Harold Pringle, 59, of West Avenue, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Carington Park Nursing Center.
He was born May 3, 1942, in Cleveland, the son of William and Erssie (Triplett) Pringle, and had been a Carington Park resident since 1994.
Survivors include his mother; and two sisters, Charlotte Jackson and Betty Isom, all of Cleveland Heights.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Billie Pringle.
A private service was held Friday at the family gravesite in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Ashtabula.
Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, had charge of the arrangements.

Lucille L. Eager
ASHTABULA - Lucille L. Eager, 88, formerly of South Main Street, North Kingsville, died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Carington Park nursing center.
Born Dec. 25, 1912, in Stryker, she was a daughter of Alfred and Ella (Sidle) Grandbouche and had been an Ashtabula County resident for most of her life.
Prior to her retirement in 1955, she was worked at Reliance Electric as a winder. While living in Bryan, she worked for the Ohio Art Co., a toy and globe maker.
Mrs. Eager was a member of East Plymouth Grange, Edgewood Alliance Church and was a former member of Plymouth United Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include two daughters, Luella Smith and Patricia Erter of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Alfred L. of Ashtabula; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Musser of Somona, Calif., and a half-brother, John Grandbouche of Hurricane, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard M. in 1990; three sons, Rollie, Roland and Howard; a great-grandson; a half-sister, Ella Mae Humbarger; a brother, Lyman Grandbouche; and her parents.
Service is 8 p.m. Thursday at Edgewood Alliance Church, 6209 Route 193, Kingsville Township, with the Rev. Keith McKenzie officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday in Shiffler's Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Williams County.
Calling hour is from 7 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the family.
