Evalyn Schmaltz
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Evalyn M. Schmaltz, 86, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at home.
She was born Feb. 16, 1916, the daughter of George and Nelli (Werner) Rodabaugh. She lived in the Ashtabula area until 1963, when she moved to Florida.
Survivors include six daughters, Shirley Case of Pierpont, Ruth Mantell of Jefferson, Sylvia Leyman of Sevierville, Tenn., Janice Pirinen of Pompano Beach, Fla., Ethel Marion of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Inostroza of Delray Beach, Fla.; four sons, Rupert Jr. and James of Kingsville, John of Cary, N.C., and Jerald of Pompano Beach.; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rupert; two daughters, Jeanne Schmaltz and Erma Calhoun; and a grandson, James Schmaltz.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 200 W. Copans Road, Pompano Beach.

Eston Ward Ashby
YOUNGSTOWN - Eston Ward Ashby, 84, a former Conneaut resident, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown.
He was born April 17, 1917, in Mount Rose, W.Va., the son of Creed D. and Lelia B. (Phillips) Ashby.
Mr. Ashby moved to Conneaut in 1933 before moving to Youngstown, where he made his home for the past 50 years.
For more than 40 years, he worked at the former Lakeview Dairy, which was owned by his parents.
He enjoyed repairing cars and reading.
Survivors include his sister, Ruth Burdick of Conneaut; and brother, Creed D. Jr. of Meadville, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Ashby; and his stepmother, Muriel Ashby.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kelloggsville Cemetery, with the Rev. Todd Regester of First Baptist Church, Conneaut, officiating.
No calling hours will be observed.
The Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, has charge of the arrangements.

Viola M. Brookhouser
CONNEAUT - Viola M. Brookhouser, 85, of Buffalo Street, Conneaut, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born March 18, 1916, in Conneaut, the daughter of Roy and Mona (Richardson) Allen, and was a lifelong area resident.
A graduate of Conneaut High School class of 1934, she worked as an assembler at the former Astatic Corp., for more than 30 years.
She and her husband, Gerald, enjoyed traveling and visited 48 states. They were members of the National Campers Travelers' Association Buckeye Brothers No. 4, Travelers Woods, the Eastern Star, Rose Chapter No. 22, and the Social CBers. She was an avid member of the Edgewood Alliance Church.
She enjoyed time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching soap operas and working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Swanson of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kathyrn L. Rishavy of Lakewood; two sons, Gerald "Budd" Brookhouser of West Springfield, Pa.; E. Richard Brookhouser of Tampa, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on Sept. 25, 2000; a sister, Emma A. O'Connor; and four brothers, Leslie, Carl, Roy Jr. and Charles Allen.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Edgewood Alliance Church, 6209 Route 193, North Kingsville. The Rev. Keith McKenzie, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be at Kelloggsville Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church's building fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Donald W. Benjamin
CONNEAUT - Donald W. Benjamin, 68, of West Main Street, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at his home.
He was born Sept. 11, 1933, in Monroe Township, the son of Sheridan and Mable (Moore) Benjamin and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Benjamin was a graduate of Jefferson High School and served in the U.S. Army during the early 1950s.
He was employed as a general construction worker until his retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Donald II of Plymouth Township and Daniel of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Donna Lee of Sioux City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Caleb Benjamin and Marissa and Christine Harris; and two sisters, Beverly Schray and Norma Smith of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pam Sumanen; and sister, Wilma Lou Brown.
No service or calling hours will be observed.
The Ross-Billman Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 526 Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, has charge of the arrangements.

Louise Passmore
CONNEAUT - Hertha Louise (Strietzel) Passmore, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Rae Ann Nursing Home in Geneva after a long illness.
She was born May 16, 1912, in East Cleveland, to William Edward and Wilhelmina (Priebe) Strietzel.
Mrs. Passmore married Archie Milo Passmore June 23, 1933, in East Cleveland, and lived there for 12 years. After World War II, they moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. for three years. In 1948, they worked a farm they owned on Root Road, Monroe Township. She stayed there after her husband died in 1964, and moved to Conneaut in 1981. She moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, George and Louise Legeza, in 1996, and to Rae Ann Nursing Home in 1998.
She was an inspector for Astatic Corp. for 27 years and retired in 1979. After retirement, she was an active Red Cross volunteer at Brown Memorial Hospital, serving in a variety of roles until she was in her late 70s. She also assisted in the Salvation Army's Christmas fundraising campaign.
Mrs. Passmore was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Conneaut, since 1948, where she was on the Altar Guild many years. She was a past noble grand of Marina Rebekah Lodge 625, Monroe, which she belonged to almost 40 years. She was a member of Monroe Grange 49 years, until its disbandment in 2000.
She was active in area bowling leagues until her late 70s. She enjoyed bingo, crossword puzzles, reading and traveling. She was fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed family gatherings.
Survivors include her daughter; grandchildren Michael Legeza, Pam Simpson and Babs Legeza of Conneaut and Kasha Legeza of Kent; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Harryette Kriznick Bauman.
Service is 3 p.m. Wednesday at Marcy Funeral Home, Conneaut, officiated by the Rev. Clyde McGee. Visitation is an hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial is in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Priebe Family History Book Fund. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

Arne G. Maki
CONNEAUT - Arne G. Maki, 82, formerly of Madison Street, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at the Esther Marie Nursing Center in Geneva.
He was born June 17, 1919, in Conneaut, to Gabriel and Ida (Homa) Mackey. He was a lifelong Conneaut resident.
Mr. Maki served with the U.S. Army Airborne in World War II. He worked at Horton Pre-Cast Concrete in the 1960s, and also at Tru-Temper, where he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Moose Club and the Eagles Club.
Survivors include daughters Joanne Waffa of Conneaut and Linda Cover of Willoughby Hills; stepdaughter Marjorie Davis of Kingsville; son Ronald J. Maki of Conneaut; sister Helen Clark of Reading, Fla.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernice V. Maki in 1990, brother Arvo and sisters Martha Mackey, Inez Sussalo, Lillian Jordan, Fanny Kaye and Alma Rodebaugh.
There is no funeral. Private visitation will be held at the family's convenience, with burial in Center Cemetery, Conneaut.
Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur L. Norton
CONNEAUT - Arthur L. Norton, 90, of Gore Road, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Erie Pa. to Albert and Lillian (Veight) Norton, and lived in Conneaut most of his life.
Mr. Norton worked 28 years in the maintenance department of Allied Resins and retired in 1975.
He was a member of the Amboy United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer firefighter with Station 4 for many years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Blanche; daughter Dorothy Wheeler of Conneaut; son Arthur L. Norton Jr. of Worthington; brother William Norton of Conneaut; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother Albert Norton.
Funeral is noon Wednesday at Amboy United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Gina Kim, assisted by the Rev. Michael Grant. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, and at the church an hour before the funeral.
Memorial donations may be made to Conneaut Station 3 Rescue Squad. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Robert W. McFadden
CONNEAUT - Robert W. McFadden, 78, of Harbor Street, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
He was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Conneaut, to Joseph and Ethel Pearl (Merriman) McFadden. He lived 10 years in California, and spent the rest of his life in Conneaut. He married Jean M. Specht April 23, 1960.
Mr. McFadden served with the U.S. Army Airborne during World War II. He worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad 10 years, was a security guard for Conneaut Township Park, and retired as a Community Action van driver.
He was a member of American Legion Cowle Post 151, Disabled American Veterans of Ashtabula and Company C 137th Armor. He was a Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed painting, collecting photographs, bowling and horseshoes.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Dolores Wolf, Diana Urch, Kathleen Ely, Karen L. McFadden and Sandra Lane of Conneaut, Ella Williams of Ashtabula and Christine Tomko of Geneva; sons Robert S. and William J. of Conneaut, and Danny M. of Niles; sisters Alice Blanar and Ida Clemens of Conneaut, Margaret Stallacher of Lorain, Arvina Anthony of Geneva and Betty Jane McFadden; 33 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joseph, Francis and Charles, sisters Catherine Steinhoff and Dorothy Watson, granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Tomko, and great-grandchildren Courtney, Christopher and Samuel Horwood and Tiffany Gregory.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, officiated by the Rev. Raymond Thomas of St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini churches. Burial is in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville.
Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the family. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
