Dr. Lorie Jean Roth, PhD
SALEM - Dr. Lorie Jean Roth, PhD, 69, passed away August 18, 2020 at Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 14, 1951 in Salem, daughter of Mary Ann (Linder) Roth and the late Martin 'Butch' Roth. Lorie was a 1969 graduate of Salem High School. She received a BA, MA and PhD at Kent State University. Lorie was an English professor at Stetson University in Stetson, FL then went to Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA and California State University, Long Beach Campus in Long Beach, CA.` She then changed her career path and was Assistant Vice - Chancellor of Academic Affairs for California State University, retiring in September of 2010.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Ann Roth of Salem; a sister, Nancy Lee Edmond of Peachtree City, GA; a brother, Martin Roth III of Salem; one nephew, Martin Roth IV of Salem and one niece, Kelly (Matt) Donavan of Marietta, GA. Private services will be held due to COVID - 19 at Stark Memorial with Pastor Alan Smearsoll officiating. Burial will be held at Grandview Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 251 S. Broadway, Salem, OH 44460, Salem Alumni, 330 E. State St., Salem, OH 44460 or Salem Saxon Scholarship Fund, 1389 Brookview, Salem, OH 44460.

Catherine E. Baird
SALEM - Catherine E. Baird, 94, died Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring. Catherine was born August 28, 1925 in Wilkes Barre, PA, the daughter of Charles C. and Ellen (James) Roth. Catherine came to Ohio in 1940.
She was a graduate of South High School in Youngstown. Catherine worked as an assembler at Worthington Industries.
She was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, Salem Area Retired Citizens and Salem Senior Citizens United Quilt Guild and R - Weigh. Her husband, J. Clyde Baird, whom she married on April 9, 1949 preceded her in death December 31, 1994.
Survivors include her son, Thomas (Shannon) Baird of Salem; daughters, Barbara Baird of Lisbon, Jane (Jerry) Menough of Salem and Amy (Robert) Prislipsky of Allison Park, PA; seven grandchildren, Veryl, Joseph (Carol Lynn), Benjamin, Lindsey, Gregory (Heather), Scott, Julie (Ally); great-granddaughter, Zoe; great grandson, Milo; three step grandchildren, Daniel, Michael, and Keith (Laura); step great-grandchildren, Danae, Jacey, Grant, Garrett and Paige.
Besides her parents and husband, two sisters, Mary Beck and Martha Boyd also preceded her in death. A private family graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2020 at Hope Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Clark officiating. For the safety of the Baird family, please adhere to social distancing, and bring your own mask.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Damascus United Methodist Church, 300 Valley Rd., P.O. Box 307, Damascus, OH 44619.

Lorrie Kay Cain
SALEM - Lorrie Kay Cain, 66, died Thursday, August 13, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her family. Lorrie was born on February 06, 1954 in Salem, a daughter of Ralph David Linn and Janice (Logue) Olmstead
She was a 1972 graduate of Salem High School and later received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Youngstown State University. Lorrie was an elementary school teacher for 22 years at Leetonia Schools. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, animals, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband David Cain of Salem, whom she married October 20,1973; three children, Stacey (George) Moser of Salem, Dustin (Michelle) Cain of Salem; and Brandon Cain of Salem; her mother, Janice Olmstead of Salem; two sisters, Barbara (Ralph) Taylor of Damascus and Judi (Jeff) Dangel of Salem; grandchildren, Mia Myers, Beau Cain, Caroline and Owen Moser, Colton and Raelynn Cain.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph David Linn. Lorrie was also preceded by her best friend her dog, Cricket, where she will now be reunited. A Graveside Service will be held Monday, August 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery with Daniel P. Madden, Certified Celebrant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice, 2341 E. State Suite B, Salem, OH 44460 or Columbiana County Humane Society, 1825 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, OH 44460.

Betty Capel Scott
SALEM - Betty Capel Scott, 89, passed away August 11, 2020 in her home. She was born December 25, 1930 in Winona, Ohio to the late Burt C. and Hazel M. (Lottman) Capel. Her husband, J. Reid Scott, whom she married May 23, 1951, preceded her in death August 24, 1992.
She was a member of Chapter 334 Eastern Stars. She worked 10 years as a bank teller at the then First National Bank and Farmers National Bank of Salem and Mercantile National Trust Bank in St. Louis, MO., retiring to raise her family. She is survived by four daughters, Leisa J. Scott of Brecksville OH, Linda S. (Alan) Chrzanowski of Yardley, PA, Laurie K. (Matthew) Ondus of Rock Hill, SC, and Luann G. (Sam) Johnson of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel & Phillip Chrzanowski, Lillian, Olivia, Joseph, Luke and Nicholas Ondus, and Amelia Johnson; her brothers, Robert L. (Delores) Capel, Fred D. (Margie) Capel, Gerald J. (Jeanne) Capel; sister, Shirley Kastenhuber; sister-in-law, Charlotte Capel; adopted son-in-law, Mark Balasz and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by brothers, Bruce A. Capel, Richard G. Capel, and Burt C. Capel, Jr.; sister, Jo - Ann (William) Harrigan and brother-in-law, Richard Kastenhuber. Due to Covid - 19, there will not be a funeral service per Betty's request. A small outdoor service will be held at Grandview Cemetery on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.
She was adamant that she wanted to keep her family and friends safe and made us promise no one would travel to come to her service and all of us would mask up and social distance per her request. Even in the end, Betty put others before herself. Contributions can be made to Salem Food Pantry, 794 E. Third Street, Salem, OH 44460, the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Youngstown, OH 44510 or to the Salem Alumni Association, 330 E. State St, Salem, OH 44460.

Margaret 'Peggy' Bonish
Columbiana - Margaret 'Peggy' Bonish, age 77, of Columbiana, died on Monday, August 10, 2020 at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, Boardman.
She was born on July 22, 1943 in Youngstown, OH, daughter of the late Michael and Gladys Josey Bonish. Peggy was a member of St. Jude Roman Catholic Church in Columbiana.
She was a Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed reading and listening to country music. She is survived by her sister, Marie Francis of Columbiana; brother, Marty Bonish of Warren; four nephews, Jeff Francis of New Middletown, Eric Francis of Columbiana, Mark Stanchin of New Middletown, and Kenny (Sara) Stanchin of Zanesville; brother-in-law, Joe Stanchin of New Middletown and by her good friend, Susan Crowl of Columbiana. She is also survived by the kind and loving staff of Harmony Village. Peggy was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Stanchin, and a brother, Michael Bonish. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at St. Jude Catholic Church, Columbiana, with Deacon Chris Evans officiating. In order to help ensure the safety of all, face masks will be required and social distancing guidelines will be followed. Burial will take place at St. Anthony Cemetery in Bessemer, PA.
Memorial donations may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Rd., Youngstown, OH 44509.

John F. Reid
SALEM - John F. Reid, age 88, died Monday, August 10, 2020 surrounded by his family.
He was born January 31, 1932 in Janesville, WI, son of the late Delmar and Alice (Lentz) Reid. John was a 1951 graduate of Janesville High School. He served in the United States Air Force. John was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He worked at General Motors for 34 years and loved woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Jane (Miller) Reid whom he married October 4, 1958; two children, Tami (Tom) Whiteleather of Las Vegas, NV and Thomas (Stephanie) Reid of Salem; four grandchildren, Michelle (Cody) Woolf, Carly (Dan) Lumpp, Carter and Zoie Reid and two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Ethan.
He was a devoted husband to Jane and an awesome dad and grandpa.
Besides his parents, a son, Timothy Reid and a sister, Marsha Brenneman also preceded him in death. A private service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, P.O. Box 37920, Boone, IA 50037 - 0920.

Sharon Ann (Wolford) Bolton
Sharon Ann (Wolford) Bolton, 70, of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, in her home.
She was born on June 30, 1950, in Salem, daughter of the late Lyn and Alice (Hilles) Wolford. Sharon, was born and raised in Salem, OH, where she graduated from United High School in 1968. In the latter end of the 90's, she departed from her childhood home and moved to Columbus, until she move back into the Salem area in 2015. Sharon was known for her love of crafting and creating new and unique things. Her creativity poured over into her love to go to the movies. Sharon was a former member of the SE Friends church, where she attended for many years. Sharon is survived by her beloved children, Sabrina Christofaris and Casey Christofaris, both residing in Salem, siblings; Bev Bell of Salem, Raymond Wolford of Youngstown, Lyn (Peewee) Wolford, and William Wolford. There will be a private service held for the family.
Arrangements were by the Arbaugh - Pearce - Greenisen & Sons, Salem.

Janet Blosser
COLUMBIANA - Janet Blosser, 73, passed away August 7, 2020 at the Hospice House of the Valley in North Lima. Janet was born on June 8, 1947, in Salem, daughter of Dorothy Bush and the late George Bush, and had lived in the area all of her life. Janet had worked at Rohrer Builders Supply and D W Dickey & Sons, Inc for over 43 years, most recently holding the position of Manager Payroll and Employee Benefits.
She loved her job and continued working until just recently, when her health no longer allowed her to do so. We would like to thank the Dickey family for all of the support they provided the past several months. Janet's passions in life were her family, her flower gardens, vacation trips to the beach, shopping, and reading. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gary Blosser, whom she married June 7, 1968, her children Greg Blosser (Cheryl) of Columbiana, Stephanie Blosser of Boardman, one grandchild, Emily Blosser of Columbiana, sisters Kathleen Houchin of Deltona, Florida, her twin sister Janice Wooten of Cabot, Arkansas, brothers George Bush of Columbus, Ohio and Gary Bush of Rogers, Ohio. Her father, George Bush, preceded her in death in 2008. Per Janet's request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held for members of the immediate family on Monday, August 10, 2020, with Reverend Dan Tayman, Hospice Chaplin officiating. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Janet's memory.
Arrangements are being handled by Warrick - Kummer - Rettig Funeral Home.

Sally Ann Walton
Sally Ann Walton, 88, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana on August 4, 2020. Sally was born on December 30, 1931, in New Waterford, the daughter of Joseph and Francis Taylor and had been a lifelong resident of the area. Sally was a 1949 graduate of New Waterford High School where she was valedictorian of her class. She went on to attend Salem City School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse and was also valedictorian of her class. Sally worked at Salem Hospital in the OB and surgery departments for 15 years and then went on to be the school nurse at Crestview Local Schools for 26 years before retiring in 1993. She will be remembered by so many for being a kind and patient nurse. Sally was also a longtime member of the Eastern Star chapter 381 of East Palestine, Ohio. After retiring she enjoyed gardening, attending card club with close friends and spending time with her beloved family. Sally was a very active and dedicated member of the New Waterford Presbyterian Church where she played the piano during church services for many years. Sally married Eugene on June 27, 1954 and together they had three sons, Scott (Debbie) Walton, Dane (Candy) Walton and Brook (Jennifer) Walton. Known as "Grammy" to her six grandchildren, Chris (Korisa) Walton, Nikki Walton, Andy Walton, Jena Walton, Austin Walton, Dylan Walton and two great - grandchildren, Karsyn and Cole Walton, they will cherish the memories of making mickey mouse waffles, baking Christmas cookies and swinging on the front porch. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Charles Taylor, John Taylor, Walter Taylor. Sally is survived by her youngest brother Dan Taylor.
Calling hours will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday August 6, 2020, at the Warrick - Kummer - Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. To protect the families that we serve, our staff, and you, we ask that all visitors use face masks and follow the social distancing protocol. The family would also like to encourage casual dress for all those attending the calling hours. A private family funeral service will be held at the funeral home with Reverend Dr. Stephen and Meta Cramer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Waterford fire department. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center for their compassion and kindness shown to Sally during her time there and for always remembering her love for a good cup of hot tea. The family would also like to thank Dr. James Demidovich and the staff at All Caring Hospice for their support.

Gracy Avonell (Blackburn) Hite
SALEM - Gracy Avonell (Blackburn) Hite, age 87, died Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at her daughter's home.
She was born February 20, 1933 in Pikeville, Kentucky, daughter of the late George Pete and Nora (Justice) Blackburn. Gracy worked on the assembly line at Warren Molded Plastics, retiring in 1997. She was a member of First Friends Church in Damascus. Her husband, Gordon Bailey Hite, whom she married July 11, 1951 preceded her in death July 29, 2020.
Survivors include, one son, Larry Bailey Hite (companion, Debbie Gibson) of Allen, KY; two daughters, Patricia Kay (Steve) Andres of Salem and Sherri Renee (Tom) Boosz of Salem; two sisters, Rosa Lee Hite of Salem and Marietta Cannatella of Lincoln Park, Michigan; two brothers, Billey Chase Blackburn and Ronnie Blackburn, both of Salem; five grandchildren, Becky Beall, Jeff Andres, Kristi Hite, Michael and Bailey Boosz; five great-grandchildren, Jaret Andres, Luke Beall, Leighanna Hite, Maddy and Jackson Andres.
Besides her parents, Gracy was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Marie Ousley and five brothers, George Blackburn Jr., Orville Blackburn, James Harvey Blackburn, Archel Blackburn, and Leon Blackburn. No services will be held. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park.
