CHARLES C. WHITNEY, age 72, of Piqua, died Friday Oct. 29, 2004 at 5:15 AM at his residence. He was born March 26, 1932 in Sunbury, Ohio to the late Clyde and Helen (Riddle) Whitney. He married Mary Ann Wilson and she survives.
Mr. Whitney is also survived by two daughters and son-in-law: Linda K. Allison of Westerville, OH and Rhonda & James Brennan of Chesapeake, VA; one son: Charles C. Whitney, II of Piqua, OH; one sister: Judith Flegal, of PA; and three grandchildren: Ryan Whitney, Abigail Allison and Jeffrey Allison.
Charles graduated from Westerville High School in 1950 and then received a B. S. in Business from The Ohio State University. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1956 – 1958. He was a member of the Fraternal Order Eagles Arie 614 in Piqua and was a field representative for Social Security Administration in Piqua and the tri-county area for 30 years.
Private Funeral Services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242-1817.

FERMAN F. (FRANK) BRAKE, age 73, of Piqua, Ohio, died Thursday October 28, 2004 at 6:44 P.M. at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, OH. He was born April 25, 1931 in Woodstock, Ohio to the late William and Leona (Chaplin) Brake. He married Nancy A. Wells on September 12, 1987 in Troy, O. and she survives.
Also surviving are 3 Sons and Daughters-In-Law: Sammy & Michelle Brake, Piqua, Homer & Lisa Brake, W. Liberty, KY, Frankie & Terri Brake, Piqua; 2 Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Peggy (Pat) & Dennie Young, Troy, O., Jeri & Bill Young, Troy, O.; 1 sister: Wilma Santos, Urbana, O.; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Mr. Brake was preceded in death by: 1 daughter and 9 brothers and sisters.
Frank was a member of Troy Apostolic Church. He worked at Hartzell Veneer for over 20 years before retiring in 1989.
Funeral Services will be Monday, November 1, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua with the Rev. David Reedy and Rev. Richard Workman co-officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 – 4 PM at the funeral home.

JOSHUA L. BROWN, age 23, of Piqua, Ohio, died Thursday November 4, 2004 at 10:00 P.M. in Piqua. He was born October 10, 1981 in Piqua to Marsha (Brown) Moore and she survives.
Also surviving are 3 brothers: Paul Brown, Ralph King and Matthew King, all of Piqua; 1 sister: Stacy King, Piqua; 4 uncles, 2 aunts, 3 nephews and 1 niece. Joshua was preceded in death by 1 aunt, Sheila Hutton.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at 1:00 PM at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua with the Rev. Thomas Farrier officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill cemetery. Calling hours will be from Tuesday 11:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to defray the cost of the funeral.

ROSEMARIE E. STATON, age 66, of Piqua, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 12:15 a.m. at Heartland of Piqua Nursing Home. She was born September 20, 1938 in Germany to the late Wilhelm and Ida (Kruger) Stange.
Mrs. Staton is survived by one son: Harlan Staton of Piqua; one brother who survives in Germany; and 1 granddaughter: Misty Staton of Piqua. One grandson: A. J. Staton preceded her in death.
Rosemarie was a member of the Sidney Apostolic Temple in Sidney. She owned and operated P & R Specialty in Piqua for over 10 years before retiring in 2000.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua with Pastor Robert L. Fries officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery.

ALICE M. (SLACK) JENKINS, age 89, of Piqua, Ohio died Saturday November 20, 2004 at 12:05 P.M. at Piqua Manor Nursing Home. She was born January 27, 1915 to the late Josea and Jessie (Bosley) Slack. Alice married G. Melvin Jenkins October 14, 1933 in Louisville, Ky. And he passed away February 10, 1986.
Mrs. Jenkins is survived by a Daughter and a Son-in-Law: Barbara and Robert Buroker of Ville Platte, Louisiana and a Son and Daughter-in-Law: D. Patrick and Patti Jenkins of Piqua, Ohio. She is also survived by 5 Grandchildren and their spouses: Elizabeth and Tim Coffin of Springfield, Va.; John and Karen Buroker of Abbeville, La.; Jill and Kevin Wise of Piqua, O.; Jackie and Larry Wiles of Piqua, O.; Jana and Jabin Cook of Lakewood, Co. Also surviving are Step-Grandchildren: Jay and Tina Hart of Boulder, Co.; Jason Hart and Joshua Hart both of Piqua, O. Mrs. Jenkins also has 12 Great- Grandchildren and 3 Step-Great Grandchildren: TJ, Rory, Annalise and Ava Coffin, Michael Buroker, Jordan, Nathan, Hannah, and Braden Wise, Rebekah, Rachel and Caven Wiles, Damon Porter and Autumn Hart and Kaylyn Hart. Also surviving is 1 Sister: Mary Jane Shaferly of Tiffin, O., and a number of nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by 1 Brother and 2 Sisters.
In Alice’s earlier years she cared for her parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law. Alice always had a place in her home and her heart for other family members who needed her love and strength. During World War II she was a supervisor at Waco in Troy and remembered placing the last cotter pin in the last glider produced there. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. In 1951 she began working with her husband Mel and together they established the Piqua Electric Company located on Cleveland Street in Piqua. She retired in 1976.
Mrs. Jenkins graduated from Bellevue High School, near Columbus, Ohio in 1933. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the St. Margaret Auxillary, the St. Claire Society, Piqua Leisure Club, Piqua YWCA, Troy Senior Citizens Center and several card clubs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday November 24, 2004 at 10 A.M. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Piqua with Rev.Fr. Angelo Caserta and Rev.Fr. Thomas Grilliot as Celebrants. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday 4-8 P.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME.A prayer service will be held Tuesday 4 P.M. in the funeral home.

Donald G. Werling, a beloved child of God, at the age of 73, was called to his eternal home by his Heavenly Father at 7:20 AM, Sunday November 21, 2004, while being cared for by his loving family.
Donald, along with his twin brother, Ronald, was born to Cora Griffes and Walter Werling in Mt. Blanchard, OH, May 2, 1931. Donald’s siblings are Edna (John) “Werling” Allen, Yvonne (Jasper) “Werling” Gilmore, Howard (Jeanette) Werling, Coral (Mallory) Werling, Ronald (Viola)Werling, Ardith (Ned) “Werling” Etter, and baby sister Lois who returned to Heaven at the age of one.
Shortly after returning from his Naval service, Don and Iona Rea Snapp eloped to Richmond, IN. on September 16, 1950. During their 54 years together they have been blessed with 5 children: Cynthia (Don) “Werling” Rowley, Michael Werling, Marcia (William) “Werling” Lake, Kenneth (Cindy) Werling, and Julie Werling. Don and Iona have been blessed with the opportunity to nurture and love 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 105 foster children!
Donald’s occupation was a welder for forty years, retiring in1996. His real work was serving his Lord each day of his life by reading His scriptures, praying and sharing with people the Word of God. In his spare time he entertained his grandchildren, was a skilled chess player, and played in his backyard in the “garden of Eden”, as it has been recently named. He would often kneel in prayer as he worked among his daylilies, praising God for all His blessings.
Don became a righteous man of God, as he read and lived the Lord’s Word. He enjoyed missionary work, hoping to share his great love of God with others. Donald’s legacy to his family and friends is his testimony of his faith in God that we will again see him in the eternities as we rejoice in Heaven.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Loy Road, Piqua with Bishop Grant Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park, Covington with full military honors by The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 – 8 P.M. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua, and Wednesday from 9-9:45 A.M. at the church.

CHARLEEN M. STOVER, age 86, of Piqua, Ohio, died Tuesday November 23, 2004 at 3: 05 P.M. at Upper Valley Medical Center. She was born August 25, 1918 in Piqua, Ohio to the late Charles and Eva (McElravey) Francis. She married Wilbur B. Stover on Jan. 27, 1940 in St. Mary Church in Piqua and he preceded her in death July 3, 1996.
Surviving is 1 Daughter and Son-In-Law: Caryl & Michael Logan of Beavercreek, Ohio. 1 Son and Daughter-In-Law: Chuck and Sandy Stover of Piqua, Ohio. 6 Grandchildren: Zachary Stover, Jarrod Stover, Mariah Stover all of Piqua; Lt. Jonathan Logan of Fallon, Nev.; Christopher Logan of Urbana, O.; Patrick Logan of Warner Robins, Ga. 4 Great Granddaughters and 1 on the way. Mrs. Stover was preceded in death by 1 Granddaughter: Audra Stover and 1 Brother.
Charleen graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1937 and was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was a member of the Troy Senior Citizens Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday November 27, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Boniface Church with Rev. Fr. James Hoffbauer and Rev.Fr. Angelo Caserta officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 6-8 P.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME. A prayer service will be held at 6 P.M. Friday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Piqua Ambulance Fund American Legion Post #184 301 West Water St. Piqua, Ohio 45356.

MARY C. SCHMIDT, age 85, of Piqua, Ohio, died Wednesday November 24, 2004 at 8:50 P.M. at Harborside Nursing Center, Troy, Ohio. She was born October 18, 1919 in Piqua, Ohio to the late Bailey and Esther (Coon) Brush. Mary married Franklin E. Schmidt on May 12, 1937 in Piqua, Ohio and he preceded her in death on April 15, 2004.
Also surviving is 1 Daughter and Son-In-Law: Terry and Ralph Quinter of Piqua, O.; 2 Sons and Daughter-In-Law: David and Betty Schmidt of Sidney, O.; Franklin E. Schmidt II of Piqua, O.; 1 Sister: Margie Eustache of Piqua, O. 7 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren. Mrs. Schmidt was preceded in death by 1 Son: Joseph and 3 Brothers and 4 Sisters.
Mary and her late husband Frank owned and operated Big Smitty’s Restaurant in Sidney for over 20 years.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Marc Quinter officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery.

VELLA L. (Longstreath) SPELLMAN, age 57, of Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday November 24, 2004 at 12:35 A.M. at Hospice of Dayton. She was born August 8, 1947 in Dayton, OH to the late Edward Longstreath, Sr. and Mary E. (Pestke) Manson.
Vella is survived by 2 daughters & sons-in-law: Debra & Johnathon Abner of Dayton and Pamela & Vernon VanDeGrift, Sr. of Piqua; 1 son & daughter-in-law: Kenneth & Tina Spellman of Dayton; 9 grandchildren: Phillip and Ambrosia (Amber) Spellman, Ashley, Larry, Alexandria (Nikki), and Bryer Ratcliff, Amanda Whited, Caleb Spellman and Tyler Hicks; 2 step grandchildren: B. J. and Vernon VanDeGrift, Jr.and 3.5 great-grandchildren: Jordan & Deserae Heins and Clayton Whited and one on the way She is also survived by 8 sisters: Charlotte Burnside of TN, Eva Latham of Urbana, Marcia McGraw of Mechanicsburg, Regina Roberts of Urbana, Mary Smith of Urbana, Darlene Hall, Woodstock, Anna Sizemore of New Vienna, Vonda Crunk of Dayton; 3 brothers: Walter (Peanut) Manson, Skeeter Manson, and Joseph Studebaker, Jr. all of Urbana and Aunt Deb Coleman of St. Paris. Vella is also survived by her dog, Dale. She was preceded in death by 1 daughter: Catherine Elizabeth Regina Spellman; 1 brother: Edward Longstreath, Jr.; and Aunt Charlotte Campbell.
Ms. Spellman attended Graham Schools and completed one year of college in Child Development at Edison State Community College. She is a member of the First Church of God in St. Paris; where she was the Children’s Program Coordinator and a member of the choir. She was a former member of the Urbana Loyal Order of the Moose # 1215 and Urbana Fraternal Order of the Eagles # 979 and Troy Fraternal Order of the Eagles #971.
Funeral Services will be Monday, November 29, 2004 at 12:00 Noon at First Church of God in St. Paris, OH with the Rev. Richard Keeran officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery in St. Paris. Calling hours will be Monday from 11:00 – 12:00 at the church . Arrangements are being handled by Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua.
Memorial contributions may be made to Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home to help defray the funeral expenses.
