Robert Rogers Brown
Robert Rogers Brown, director of student counseling and professor of education emeritus at Miami University, died Sunday, Sept. 3, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital of complications after surgery. He was born June 11, 1918, in West Peterborough, N.H. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1942 and served almost four years with two-and-a-half years spent in the China, Burma, India theater with the 14th Air Corps (Flying Tigers). He first came to Miami in the fall of 1948 as freshman adviser in New Men's (later Symmes) Hall. The following year, he was head of the Miami Lodges for sophomore men and counselor in the Student Counseling Service. He returned to Miami in 1961. He was the director of Miami's Student Counseling Service and was professor of counseling and guidance until his retirement in 1980. A memorial service was held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. The family suggests contributions in his memory to the general scholarship fund at Panuska Development Center, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056, or Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Keith D. Lackey
Keith D. Lackey, 49, of Brookville, Ind., died in Jewish Hospital, Kenwood, Aug. 28. He was born in Hamilton on Oct. 26, 1950. He was a farmer and farmed in Springfield Township, Franklin County, all of his life. He is survived by his spouse Vicki Lackey. Funeral services were held Aug. 31 at Springfield United Methodist Church with Wade Urban officiating. Burial was at Big Cedar Cemetery, Brookville. Contributions may be made to the Springfield United Methodist Church is his memory.

Skyla Rayne Thomas
Skyla Rayne Thomas, infant daughter of Sarah E. Moore and Jeff E. Thomas, of Connersville, Ind., died Friday afternoon, Sept.1, at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis on Aug. 12. She was 20 days old. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, Ind. Burial was in Brumfield, Meyer Cemetery, in Nulltown, Ind. Obituaries for the Week of September 14, 2000 Viola Neal Holman
Viola Neal Holman died in Community East Hospital, in Indianapolis, Ind. She was born in Oxford on Feb. 2, 1932. She attended Oxford Public Schools and Stewart High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church, while living in Oxford. She married John Stewart and he preceded her in death in 1968. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Woodside Cemetery.

Paul James Jones
Paul James Jones, 86, formerly of West High Street, Liberty, Ind., died Monday, Sept. 11, at Fayette Memorial Hospital in Connersville. He spent most of his time in the West, but returned to Indiana two years ago. He was a career truck driver and is a retired Teamster. Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel in Liberty Ind., with Kevin Holley, pastor of the Liberty Church of Christ officiating. Burial was at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Boston, Ind., with the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts of Liberty, Ind., conducting graveside military rites.

Philip E. Bunger
Philip E. Bunger, 60, of Collinsville, died Sept. 13 at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born Aug. 16, 1940 in Lewisburg. He was a 1959 graduate of Talawanda High School. He married Charolette Couch on Aug. 19, 1961 in Camden. He worked for Richard Coombs of Collinsville, Hamilton Gravel and as foreman for Milford Township Maintenance Department.

Obituaries for the Week of September 28, 2000 Marian Engel
Marian Engel, 95, a resident of the Oxford View Nursing Center for the past five years, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000. She was born Nov. 25, 1904, in Chicago. Among survivors is a son, Alan Engel and his wife, Sondra, of Oxford. Engel was a well-known antique dealer who moved her business to Oxford in 1977. Funeral arrangements were by Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami University Art Museum or the Oxford Branch of the Lane Public Library.

Mabel Craig
Mabel Craig, 91, of Camden, died Sept. 25, 2000 at Woodland Country Manor near Somerville. She was born May 13, 1909, in Somers Township, Ohio. She was a 1927 graduate of Camden High School. She married Arthur P. Craig on Nov. 11, 1927, in Hamilton. He preceded her in death in 1985. Funderal sevices were held Sept. 27, with a funeral service following. Memorials are suggested to the Camden Emergency Squad, 20 1/2 N. Liberty St., Camden, OH 45311.

Donald Hammitt
Donald Hammitt, 86, of 615 W. High St., Liberty, Ind., died at his residence on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000. Hammitt was born April 13, 1914, in Union County, Ind. He lived all his life in the Union County area. Funeral services were held at the Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty, Ind., on Sept. 22. Burial followed the service at College Corner Cemetery in West College Corner, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Church of Christ in his memory.

Mary E. Wallen
Mary E. Wallen, 89, of Dayton, formerly of Oxford, died Saturday evening, Sept. 23, 2000, at The Maria-Joseph Living Center in Dayton. She was born June 27, 1911 in Bybee, Ky. She moved to Oxford as a child and was a graduate of McGuffey High School. On Feb. 5, 1944, she married Emmert Wallen and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1988. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford. Burial was at Crown Hill Memorial Park.

Helen L. Sintz
Helen L. Sintz, 83, of West College Corner, Ind., died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23, 2000 at her home. She was born on April 9, 1917, in Franklin County, Ind. On March 1, 1937, she married Orval Sintz in Brookville, Ind. Funeral services were held Sept. 26 at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home. Burial was in the College Corner Cemetery, Union County, Ind. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Reid Hospital Hospice Staff, 1401 Chester Blvd., Richmond, IN 47374.

James B. Wesson
James B. Wesson, 71, professor emeritus of teacher education at Miami University, died Sept. 22, 2000 at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford. Wesson joined Miami's faculty in 1963, specializing in mathematics education. He served as chairman of the teacher education department from 1970 to 1975. Brian Tyler Smith, 6, of Oxford, died Sept. 29, 2000 at Children's Hospital following a brief and unexpected illness. He was born March 7, 1994 to Robert B. Smith and Samantha Starke Smith. He was a member of the Oxford Church of God and a first-grade student at Kramer Elementary School. Funeral services were held at Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker Chapel, in College Corner, Ohio, on Oct. 3. Burial followed in Beechwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. Contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital in Brian's memory.

James William Cheeks
James William Cheeks, formerly of Oxford, died Sept. 18. He was born Feb. 12, 1919. He graduated from Stewart School and received a bachelor's degree in Education from Miami University in 1941. He later earned a master's degree from the University of Illinois. During the early years of World War II, Cheeks worked as a civilian instructor for the U.S. Air Force. In 1943, he received his pilot's training under a civilian program at Crete, Neb. He was the first of six pilots selected to go to Ethiopia to re-establish and train the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force. During this time, he was promoted to Major and designated as Emperor Haile Selassie's personal pilot. Burial was at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Calif.

Donald Hammitt
Donald Hammitt, 86, of 615 W. High St., Liberty, Ind., died at his residence on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000. Hammitt was born April 13, 1914, in Union County, Ind. He lived all his life in the Union County area. Funeral services were held at the Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty, Ind., on Sept. 22. Burial followed the service at College Corner Cemetery in West College Corner, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Church of Christ in his memory.

Sarah Sanford Faulkner Smith
Sarah Sanford Faulkner Smith died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Woodland Country Manor. She was born April 4, 1916. She received her early education in Cynthiana, Ky. The family later moved to Oxford, where she graduated from Stewart School. She married Luther "Buddy" Paul Smith on Aug. 24, 1938. They were married for 46 years. She was a member of the Oxford Women's Club and a founding member of the NAACP's Oxford Branch. She served as member of the McCullough-Hyde Board of Trustees and Board of Directors. Funeral services were held Oct. 3. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma M. Geis
Thelma M. Geis, 80, of Connersville, Ind., died Oct. 2, 2000 at the Heritage House Nursing Home. She was born in Union County, Ind., on March 3, 1920. Funeral services were held at Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel, in Liberty, Ind., Oct. 5. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Liberty, Ind. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mildred A. Middaugh
Mildred Alice Bartlett Middaugh, 96, formerly of Oxford, died Sept. 27 at Franciscan at Schroder Village in Hamilton. She was born Dec. 2, 1903, in Harrisburg, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth in 1982. They had been married 59 years. Visitation and funeral services were held Oct. 1 at the Oxford Presbyterian Church. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Spring Lawn Cemetery in New Paris, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Paris Presbyterian Church or the Oxford Presbyterian Church, 101 N. Main St., Oxford, 45056.

Obituaries for the Week of October 12, 2000 Marjorie Sams
Marjorie Sams, 73, of Camden, died on Oct. 4, in Oxford. She was born on Sept. 8, 1927 in Clermont County, Ohio. She married Ray Sams on Nov. 17, 1966 in Newport, Ky. He survives. A memorial service was held on Oct. 6 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Eaton. R.C. Nein and Sons Thompson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Robert Clark Green
Robert Clark Green, 94, of Oxford, formerly of The Renaissance, Olmsted Township, Ohio, died Oct. 4 at the Oxford View Nursing Center after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 9, 1905, in Cleveland. He was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, where he served as a CPA and bank examiner, from 1934 until his retirement in 1968. He married Edith Hilda Ellis on Sept. 28, 1935. They were married 64 years. A memorial service was held Oct. 6 at the Oxford Presbyterian Church. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Juanita L. Buerk
Juanita L. Buerk, 89, of Oxford Township died Oct. 5. She was born in Kenton, Ohio on April 7, 1911. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. She was a teacher in Ridgeway, Ohio and Kenton, Ohio, and was later an executive at Lazarus in Columbus. After moving to Oxford in 1982, she and her husband, William, were members of the Oxford Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held Oct. 9 at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home. Burial was in the Oxford Cemetery. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Oxford Presbyterian Church or to a charity of onešs choice.

Charles Sizemore
Charles Sizemore, 38, of Hamilton, died Oct. 7 at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1962, in Wahiwa, Hawaii. He graduated from Talawanda High School and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1980 to 1984. Services are at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are in care of Avance Funeral Home, Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrineršs Burns Institute.

Harold J. Schriever
Harold J. Schriever, 84, of Lewisburg and formerly of Oxford, died Monday, Oct. 9, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. He was born Jan. 11, 1916 in Covington, Ky. He was a graduate of Stewart High School in Oxford, where he lettered in football and basketball. In 1935, he began working for the Oxford Printing Company, where he worked for 52 years, retiring in 1987. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Oct. 11 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oxford. Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford, was in charge of arrangements.
