William Applegate
William David Applegate, 54, of Middletown, passed away at his home Saturday morning, Aug. 11, 2001, after a brave struggle with cancer. Bill was born March 23, 1947, in Cincinnati, the son of Harry and Helen (Likiarthis) Applegate. His family soon moved to Middletown where he resided until his passing. He was employed by the city of Middletown for almost 26 years, retiring early due to his health. He worked in the department of public works, division of sewers his entire career, becoming part of supervision 12 years ago. Bill enjoyed his work and truly cared about the citizens of Middletown. He enjoyed playing practical jokes on his many friends and relatives and will be remembered among many things for his wonderful sense of humor and his tender heart. He was a member of the Christian Enterprise Baptist Church. He will be sorely missed but lovingly remembered by his wife of 13 years, Dawn Liska-Applegate; daughters, Crista Applegate and Casie (husband Ronald) Lazier, both of Middletown; stepson, Daniel (wife Susan) Caudill of Trenton; grandsons, Tyler Applegate and Brice Caudill; granddaughters, Cayla Rodgers and Carisa Lazier; sister, Linda Applegate of Middletown; brothers, Jack (wife Barbara) Lee of Middletown and George Applegate of Illinois; special nephews, Jason and Ryan Applegate, both of Middletown, and numerous friends and co-workers. Preceding him in death were his father, Harry Thomas Applegate in October of 1965, and his mother, Helen (Likiarthis) Applegate in August of 2000.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. James Anderson officiating. Cremation will follow with his final resting place as Woodside Scattering Gardens.

Matt Bates
Mr. Matt L. Bates Jr., 78, of Middletown, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at 10 p.m. at Middletown Regional Hospital emergency room. He was born April 24, 1923, in Portsmouth, Ohio, and had lived in Lexington, Ky., for 34 years before moving to Middletown. He was employed as a dispatcher in the transportation department at Armco from 1957 until his retirement in 1986. He was the first elected African American Union trustee. He was previously employed as a horse trainer and exerciser for Keenland Race Track in Lexington, Ky. He was member of the Second Baptist Church and the Men's Choir and a member of the Elk's Lodge. Mr. Bates were preceded in death by his parents, Matt L. Bates and Mamie Oliver; wife, Mae Lois (Wilson) Bates in 1997; a daughter, Mae Howard; two brothers, Thomas Bates and Mitchell Bates; and a sister, JoAnn Bates. He is survived by three daughters, Doris Rolark of Middletown, Rosezella Glover and husband, Raymond, of Middletown, and Maria Bates and husband Antonio Super, of Fort Bragg, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, Yvonne Gates, James Gates Jr., Danetta Gates, Renee V. Glover, Rosetta Kyles, Ronald K. Glover, Debra Glover, Wendell Glover, Chanee Uribe, Rahman Howard, Darron Howard and Micah Super; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret Bates.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 118 S. Verity Parkway in Middletown. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. N.L. Cooper officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Herman V. Beltz
FRANKLIN -- Herman V. Beltz, 90, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Sycamore Hospital in Miamisburg. He was born in Morrow, Ohio, on July 20, 1911, and was a lifelong resident of Warren County. Mr. Beltz was a farmer and a member of the Towne Boulevard Church of God. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nora Bell Beltz; a brother, Willie Beltz; half-brothers, Raymon Carder and Frank Carder; and his parents, Arthur and Jennie (Ayers) Beltz. He leaves his wife Ruth Beltz; two sons, Kenneth Fielders of Gulf Port, Miss., and David L. Hedger, and his wife, Lauretta, of Kettering, Ohio; a daughter, Sandy Sorrell, and husband, Larry, of Franklin; grandchildren Robyn Fox, John Sorrell, Kelli Mohr, and husband, Eddie, and Shelli Tharps, and husband, Eric; great-grandchildren, Amanda Mohr and Courtney Tharps, Eric Junior Tharps and Shelbi Tharps; and nieces Frances Gibson, and husband, A. T., Mary Ann, Marline Beltz, and Phyllis Rhule, and her husband, Sam.

Dorothy Curry Brown
Dorothy Curry Brown, formerly of Oxford, Ohio, passed away in Michigan on Aug. 8, 2001. She was born in Gettysburg, Ohio, on July 26, 1908, the daughter of John V. and Viola M. Curry. She married Paul M. Brown on Sept. 1, 1937, in Oxford, Ohio. She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Miami University. She enjoyed her students and 27 years of teaching English, French, history and music. She retired from Edgewood High School, Trenton, Ohio, in 1974. She and her husband, Paul, relocated to Little Platte Lake in Honor, Michigan, where they had vacationed since 1945. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, playing the piano and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. She attended Oxford Presbyterian Church and Honor Congregational Church. She lived her Christian faith daily. She is survived by a son, John Ronnie Brown and his wife Diane of Hamilton, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Curry Stephenson of Monroe, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Mildred Vinton of Electric City, Wash.; granddaughter, Jana G. Brown of Vail, Colo.; grandson, John R. Brown and his wife Debbie; two great-granddaughters, Kristina and Lauren Brown of Harrison, Ohio; nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul and her parents.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at The Smith and Ogle Funeral Home, 101 W. Church St., Oxford, Ohio. A visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Sims Cemetery, Franklin County, Indiana.

Henry H. Cole
Henry H. Cole, 85, of Middletown, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Frenchburg, Ky., on May 5, 1916, and was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had also served with the Civilian Conservation Corp. Mr. Cole was a crane operator at Inland Container, retiring after 35 years of service. A member of the Tytus Avenue Church of God, he loved the outdoors, walking, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Elizabeth (Sealey) Cole; a son, Robert L. Cole of Middletown; a daughter, Sandra (husband Henry) Trushel of Middletown; two grandsons, Robert Cole Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind., and Derek Shockley of West Chester; and two brothers, Thomas Dean of Poasttown and Richard Dean of Dayton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Taulbee and Matilda Cole; a son, Hickson Cole in 1963; and a daughter, Julia E. Shockley in 1986.

Betty Dennis
Evelyn Louise "Betty" Dennis, 81, of Middletown, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Madison Township, the daughter of Harvey Sutton Sr., and Elva (Gardner) Sutton. Mrs. Dennis was a member of the First Baptist Church and the West Middletown Ladies Sunday School Class. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria (husband, Ron) Richardson of Middletown; a granddaughter, Melissa (husband, Rick) Schubert of Mason; a great-grandson, Conner Schubert; a brother, Harvey Sutton Jr., of Middletown, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Retsel Dennis in 1976; her parents; her sisters, Geraldine "Jerry" Franklin, Jane Tullis, Dorothy Back, Louella Stephenson and Edna Sutton; a brother, Robert Sutton, and a nephew, David Franklin.

H. Thomas Estes
FRANKLIN -- H. Thomas Estes, 68, of 4176 Back Lane, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born on April 10, 1933, and raised in Richmond, Ky., the son of Louis and Ina Jane (Carter) Estes. He was formerly employed by the Teamsters as a truck driver, retiring in 1999. Mr. Estes was an avid golfer and was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Temple in Springboro. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry Lee Estes. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 24 years, Salley (Gibson) Estes; sons Bruce (Derdira) Estes of California, Ed (Marsha) Mullins of Eaton and David (Diane) Mullins of Franklin; daughters Baily Albin of Middle Lake Wash., Melanie (Chris) Dean of Miamisburg, Floriene (Martin) Cox of Franklin and Kitty (Larry) Steele of Franklin; brother Billy D. (Joann) Estes of Franklin; sisters Mary Ruth (Wilbur) Crowe of Bybee, Ky., and Betty (Paul) Johnson of Walton, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; special friends Lonnie and Pauline Bray of Franklin; and a host of friends and relatives.

Cynthia L. Green
Cynthia Lynn Green, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Marion General Hospital. She was born on May 23, 1966, in Middletown, Ohio, the daughter of Otis and Juanita (Green) King. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ellen Green and Janet Ratcliff; a brother, Donald King; and a nephew, Antonio Tuttle. She is survived by her mother, Juanita King, and stepfather, Otis King of Franklin; her fiancé, David Cooper of Columbus; two sisters, Sonya, and her husband, Robert Wray, of Franklin, and Tressa King of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Jacob Ratcliff; and nieces and nephews Mike and Amber Tuttle, Kara and Devon Ratcliff and Denika and Dennis Baker.

Judith L. Hilton
Judith L. Hilton, 55, of Middletown, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Harlan County, Ky., on Oct. 31, 1945, to Joe E. and Mildred C. (Jones) Dixon. She was a graduate of Madison High School and was employed at Inland Container Corp. Ms. Hilton was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 501, Eagles Aerie 528 and Eastern Star. She is survived by her father, Joe E. Dixon of Germantown; a son, Doug (Julia) Johnson of Middletown; a daughter, Debbie Miller of Trenton, and special friend, Mike Roberts; four grandchildren, Cole Johnson and Danielle, Ashley and Samantha Miller; and her best friend, Teresa Asbell. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred C. Dixon.

Mabel Ann Jackson
Mabel Ann Jackson, 74, of Middletown, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Aug. 10, 2001, in Middletown. She was born in Middletown Aug. 1, 1927, and lived in the community her entire life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Girl Scout leader for many years. She was active in the Amanda Junior High Booster's Club and had several hobbies, including decorating wedding and novelty cakes, chair caning and sewing. Her greatest love was caring for her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Simpson and Lieudisa (nee Sparks) Hall; a sister, Miva Bluhm, and twin sister Muriel May Hall; and a brother, Okra Jordan Hall. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Sam Jackson; daughters, Debbie Kelly and husband Ray of Monroe, and Diane Bechtel and husband Roy of Middletown; grandchildren, Cris Kelly of Monroe, Lisa Slone and husband Joe of Monroe, Julie Bechtel of Middletown and Nathan Bechtel of Middletown; a great-grandchild, due in March; brothers, Pete Hall and wife Angela of Trenton, Bill Hall and wife Mary of Monroe, Ralph Hall and wife Lois of Hunter; and sisters, Hazel Shatto and Viva Byrd, both of Middletown.

Joan E. Johnson
Mrs. Joan Elaine Johnson, 54, of Middletown, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Middletown on Jan. 31, 1947, the daughter of Emmett Kemplin and Rachael (Brown) Kemplin. Mrs. Johnson worked as a security analyst at IBM for 26 years. She was a member of the Towne Boulevard Church of God. She loved her pet dogs, Sammie and Megan. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert D. Johnson; a son, Bob (wife Michelle) Johnson Jr. of Middletown; a grandson, Nathan Johnson; three sisters, Clara Smallwood of Washington Court House, Lou Thurston of Sarasota, Fla., and Carol Tibbs of Lebanon; and three brothers, Leon Kemplin and Don Kemplin, both of Middletown, and Bob Kemplin of Largo, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Janet Blair in October, 2000, and Wanda Burdge.

Elmer Lawson
WAYNESVILLE -- Elmer "Jack" Lawson, 68, of 200 Adamsmoor Drive, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Hospice of Dayton. He was born on Jan. 19, 1933, in Eidson, Tenn., the son of William Tivis and Marinda (Brewer) Lawson. He was formerly employed by Rush Package and Delivery as a courier, retiring on Jan. 31, 1998. Mr. Lawson loved the Lord, family and friends, and also was a lifelong guitar player. He loved to spread the gospel in song. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Walterman) Lawson; sons Keith and Tim Lawson, both of Middletown; daughters Phyllis Larkins of Lebanon and Chonda Swanton of Carlisle; a stepson, Jim Bennett of Morrow; a brother, Burkette Lawson of Rogersville, Tenn.; sister Betty Lamb of Morristown, Tenn.; grandchildren Chrissy, Robbie, Leslie, Jessica, Stephanie, Jaci, Rachel, Brad, Luke, Ashley, Audrey, John, Kenny and Kevin; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Cody and Aaron.

Dorothy E. Lehde
Dorothy E. Lehde, 86, of Middletown, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Willow Knoll Nursing Home. She was born in West Blockton, Ala., on Nov. 26, 1914, but lived here most of her life. She was employed at Central Service Tech Hospital in Texas. Dorothy attended Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clelly David and Hattie (Bracknell) Nichols; and a sister, Beatrice. Survivors include a daughter, Norma J. Griffin (Paul) of Middletown; three sons, Gerald L. Cox and Daniel E. Cox, both of Middletown and Charles E. (Peggy) Cox of Louisville, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Harris (Norman) of Florida.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Baker-Stevens Funeral Home, with interment at North Monroe Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William J. Madaffari
William J. Madaffari, 62, of Fairfield, passed away in Mercy Hospital of Fairfield Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at 8:30 p.m. He was born in Middletown on May 1, 1939, the son of Leo T. and Sue (Paolucci) Madaffari. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960. He was a member of the Hamilton Antique Car Club, Elks Lodge BPOE 93, and Knights of Columbus Council 968. He was employed as a product service manager for Western States for 38 years, retiring in 1998, and then was employed as a consultant for Broadbent Corp. for the last three years. On Sept. 10, 1965, in Hamilton, he was married to Wanda Bowling. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Madaffari of Fairfield; three daughters, Laura D. Niles of Sacramento, Calif., Angalina M. Madaffari of Hamilton and Tina A. Davis of Trenton; a brother, John (Gloria) Madaffari of Hamilton; a sister, Gloria Gray of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Danny, Sarah, Amanda, Brandon, Jesse, Cody, Ryan and Christopher; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jordan and Kaitlyn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
ARRANGEMENTS: Prayers will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Brown Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Ave., Hamilton, followed by Mass of Christian Burial in St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church in Hamilton at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Barbara Jean Mullins
Mrs. Barbara Jean Mullins, 61, of 2816, Goldman Ave., Middletown, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born on Sept. 23, 1939, in Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Chester and Rachel (Bowermaster) Coffey. She was a member of the Spring Life Worship Center. She was preceded in death by her father, Chester in 1981. Mrs. Mullins is survived by her husband of 45 years, Heuford; three sons, Michael, Robert and Eric Mullins, all of Middletown; six daughters, Melody Speicher of Middletown, Stephanie Ferguson of Franklin, Tamara Ross of Camden, Lisa Applegate of Maysville, Ky., and Sandra Willhoite and Cheryl Viars, both of Middletown; her mother, Rachel Coffey of Franklin; two brothers, David Coffey of Carlisle and Donald Coffey of Middletown; 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

James W. Oakley
James W. Oakley, 75, of 5773 Elk Creek Road, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 7, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Middletown, Ohio, on April 20, 1926, a son of Rollie and Pearl (Gibbs) Oakley. Mr. Oakley worked for Inland Container prior to entering the service. He enlisted in the Army and served during World War II in the European Theater. Following his service, he went back to work for Inland for a time, then entered the construction field as a carpenter. He worked for many years for SK Construction and finally retired from the carpenters local union. He worked hard all his life - and enjoyed it. Mr. Oakley's greatest love was his family, including his dogs, Rattler, Si and Daisy. He was a member of American Legion Post 218. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Sandlin) Oakley; his children, James D. Oakley (Mary) of Middletown, Shawn C. Oakley (Martha) of Asheville, N.C., Brett Oakley (Amber) of Middletown and Dana Oakley-Davis (James) of Middletown; three grandchildren, Derron, Kenny and Katherine Oakley; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Noelle Horsley, and another great-grandchild due in November; and his siblings, Opal Cassidy, Kennith Oakley, Charles Oakley and Patty (Richard) Blauvelt. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Demostenes-Hatfield; and a brother, Herbert Oakley.

Barbara A. Parker, 67, of 10231 Woodlawn Ave., Chautauqua, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at her residence. She was born July 24, 1934, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Mack and Gertrude (Ballinger) McKinney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, in 1991, and parents. She is survived by four daughters, Connie Tirey of Waynesville, Helen Wallace of Franklin, Leslie Hale of Loveland and Regina Shaw of Carlisle; loving friend, Ercel Anders of Miamisburg; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Eaton-Anderson & Unglesby Funeral Home, 1357 E. 2nd St., Franklin, with the Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Clarence Pence
GERMANTOWN - Clarence “Termite” Pence, 81, of Germantown, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001. Clarence was born in Wolfe County, Ky., to the late Mort and Nannie Pence. He was a car salesman in the Middletown area for more than 30 years. He was a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge 90, Free & Accepted Masons, and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie Pence; his cousin, Juel Holiday of Monroe; and numerous friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: There will be no visitation. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Woodland Mausoleum Chapel, 118 Woodland Ave., Dayton, with Pastor Larry A. Grunden officiating. Entombment will be at Woodland Mausoleum.
MEMORIALS: If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Germantown Rescue Squad. Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown is serving the family.

Dennis D. Perrin I
Dennis D. Perrin I, 48, of 4773 Caprice Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at his residence. Dennis was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1972 and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He was employed by Johnson Control as a security officer. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Perrin; two sons, Dennis and Dexter Perrin; his mother, Katherin Perrin; two brothers, Derrick and Robert Perrin; two sisters, Jarlene Lee and Denise Perrin; two grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends, all of Middletown.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at noon Monday, Aug. 13, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leon Wilkinson officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hall Jordan Memorial Chapel, 918 S. Main St., Middletown.

Eleanor S. Ridgway
Eleanor S. Ridgway, 100, of Middletown, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Hawthorn Glen Nursing Home. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on March 4, 1901, the daughter of John H. and Mary L. (Stevens) Ridgway. Miss Ridgway was a 1917 high school graduate and a member of Sigma Phi Chi Sorority. She graduated in 1930 from the Palmer School of Chiropractors for women, receiving her Ph.D. in philosophy and opened her practice in Davenport, Ind. Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Katharine Gregg in 1996. She is survived by guardians Patricia Zurkey and Debbie Irwin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Eaton-Anderson & Unglesby Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., Franklin, with Deacon Thomas Coyle officiating. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service. Patricia and Debbie wish to express their special thanks to the staff at Hawthorn Glen where Eleanor had resided since 1997.

Linda L. Satterfield
CARLISLE -- Mrs. Linda L. Satterfield, 49, of 165 Dalton Ave., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her residence. She was born on March 6, 1952, in Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Barney Jr. and Dorothy (Lewis) Morris. Mrs. Satterfield was employed by the Franklin Nursing Home for eight years as a dietitian. She was preceded in death by her father in 2000, and husband, Earl Ray Satterfield in February, 2001. She is survived by her sons Gary and Alan, both of Carlisle; a brother, Danny Baker of Lancaster, Ky.; half-brother Jerry Morris of Franklin; and half-sisters, Melissa Hershner of Carlisle and Debra Evans and Sharon Hidbard, both of Lebanon.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at Anderson Funeral Home, 40 N. Main St., Springboro, with the Rev. Dave Bowling officiating. Burial will be in Miami Valley Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
