Queenie Brannon
Queenie R. Brannon, 92, formerly of Braceville-Robinson Road, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at her daughter's home in Newton Falls, with whom she resided. Born March 23, 1906 in Windham, she was a daughter of Alfred W. and Anna (Applequist) Champlin. Mrs. Brannon was an inspector for Trumbull Lamp until 1942, and was also employed at the Ravenna Arsenal until 1953. She attended Windham High School. She enjoyed crocheting and jigsaw puzzles. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Verna E. Riggle Collins and Mrs. Wilma M. Riggle Palo, both of Newton Falls; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She married her first husband, Reginald Riggle, on Sept. 29, 1923, and her second husband, Clyde D. Brannon, on Sept. 4, 1943. Both died previously. Five sisters: Minnie Shafer, Dela Krieder, Jennie Sinn, Grace Godfrey, Viola Champlin; three brothers, Arthur Champlin, Melvin Champlin and Raymond Champlin; and a granddaughter, Judy Collins, also died previously. Services were held today at 10 a.m. at Newton Falls Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Borowski Funeral Home, Newton Falls.

Isabella Grimsley
STREETSBORO - Isabella Grimsley, 107, died Thursday. Services will be announced by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel.

Chance Lee Harris
Chance Lee Harris, infant son of Terry and Kathleen (Jones) Harris of Akron, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998. He was born April 26 at Akron City Hospital. In addition to his parents, survivors include a brother, Te;Jay; grandfather, Eugene Harris of Brimfield; grandmothers, Sharon Henry of Akron, Peggy Starcher of West Virginia and Patty Jones of Brady Lake; and a great-grandmother, Cordella Oberholtzer of Kent. His grandfather, Lawrence Jones, also died Tuesday. Services were being held at 11 a.m. Friday at Grandview Memorial Park, with evangelist Terry Smith officiating. The Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel is handling arrangements.

Rev. Lawrence Jones
Rev. Lawrence W. Jones, 59, of Kent, died Tuesday at Hospice Care Center in Akron. Born July 15, 1938 in Akron, he was the son of John and Evelyn Jones. Rev. Jones was instrumental in developing three churches, one of which is the Echos of Calvary, located on the Pima Indian Reservation. By trade he was a machinist. Survivors include his wife, Patricia, to whom he had been married for 10 years; sons, Mark (Joann) Jones, Jeremy Jones, Samuel Jones and Gary Denning; daughters, Mrs. Bill (Jennifer) McQuone and Mrs. Terry (Kathleen) Harris; one grandson; and sister, Mrs. Leonard (Jackie) Starcher. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Farley Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Road, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Kenneth Lewis
ROOTSTOWN - Kenneth R. Lewis, 48, died at home Tuesday. Portage County Coroner Roger Marcial is investigating. Born March 17, 1950, in Ravenna, he was the son of Kenneth A. and Margaret E. (Buckley) Lewis. He had lived in Ravenna all of his life. Mr. Lewis was employed as an inspector with the White Rubber Company of Ravenna. Survivors include a sister, Sandra J. Lewis of Ravenna. There will be no calling hours or services. Arrangements are being made by Wood Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Paul McLaughlin
Paul M. McLaughlin, 82, of Elizabeth St., Newton Falls, died Thursday evening, April 30, 1998, at Briarfield Nursing Care in Cortland. Services to be announced at a later date by the Borowski Funeral Home, Newton Falls.

ISABELLA GRIMSLEY
Isabella M. Grimsley, 107, who was a resident of Maple Wood Care Centre in Streetsboro, died Thursday. Born Feb. 16, 1891, in Stoneboro, Pa., she was the daughter of David and Isabella (Spence) Brown. She moved to Portage County in the early 1900s and had resided in Streetsboro for several years. Mrs. Grimsley was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Her husband, Levi, whom she married in 1912, died previously. A son, Lee Grimsley, who was superintendent of the Portage County schools, died in 1993. Survivors include her grandchildren, Gordon Christie of Warren, Gaye Bricker of Kent and Betty Buie of Akron; three great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and niece, Lois Fisher of Warren. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Vienna, Ohio, with the Rev. Harold Grimm officiating. Local arrangements were made by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel.

JOSEPH E. MILLER
Joseph Emerson "Spook" Miller, 86, of Kent, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born November 6, 1911, he was the son of Frank W. and Amanda (Clark) Miller. He was a life resident of Kent. Mr. Miller was employed by the city of Kent's water department for 36 years, first as a meter reader and later as supervisor of water distribution. He retired in 1975. Survivors include his wife, Edna, to whom he was married 59 years. His sister, Mildred, and brother, Kenneth, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. David Lanum officiating.

ELIZABETH C. SACKETT
RANDOLPH - Elizabeth C. "Betty" Sackett, 77, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Alliance Community Hospital. Born Oct. 4, 1920 in Norton, she was the daughter of Ignatius and Elizabeth (Kungle) Kiss. Mrs. Sackett was the owner of Kiss Market in Randolph. She was a member of Randolph United Methodist Church and the Ladies Cemetery Association of Randolph. Survivors include her husband, Elmore "Bud"; daugthers, Sandra (Kenneth) Purser of Matthews, N.C., and Katherine (David) Miller of Randolph; and three grandchildren. Her son, Francis John "Frankie," died in 1953. Her brothers, George and John Kiss, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Randolph. VELMA L. LEE
Former Kent resident Velma LaRue (Leeper) Lee, 92, who was the first women to earn a master of arts degree in history from Kent State University in 1936, died Jan. 2, 1998 in Sun City, Calif. Born June 15, 1905 in Robertsville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Bert and Ira Starkey. Mrs. Lee taught high school home economics and business skills for more than 45 years in Ohio and California. She enjoyed oil painting and buying and selling real estate. Survivors include her sister, Miriam Stringer of Kent and 11 nieces and nephews. Her husbands, Byron Leeper and Harry Lee, died previously. Burial was in Robertsville Cemetery in Robertsville.

PAUL McLAUGHLIN
Former Newton Falls resident Paul M. McLaughlin, 82, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, in Fowler, Ohio. Born July 1, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of John and Anna McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin retired from Republic Steel in Warren, where he was a millwright. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3332, American Legion Post No. 236, Amvets Post No. 112 and the Army-Navy Club, all of Newton Falls. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Newton Falls. He enjoyed horseshoes and darts. He was a 10-gallon American Red Cross blood donor. Survivors include his daughter, Arley Ann Masters of Hartford, Ohio; sister, Anna Mae Wyant of Hartford; and two step-grandchildren. His wife, Kathryn, died in 1990. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. today at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery. The VFW Honor Guard and Firing Squad will conduct a service. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.

BETTY TRANOVICH
Betty L. Tranovich, 72, of Hubbard, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at home after a long illness. Born March 31, 1926 in Youngstown, she was the daughter of William and Rachel (McCullough) Newell. She had lived in Hubbard for 44 years. Mrs. Tranovich was a homemaker. She graduated magna cum laude at the age of 60 from Youngstown State University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in business administration in 1980. Survivors include her son, Stephen J., of Valencia, Calif.; daughters, Judith A. Bray, with whom she lived, Jane M. Simons of Newton Falls, and Gloria J. Reed of Billerica, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters. Her husband, Steve, died April 2, 1980. A brother also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Kelley-Robb Funeral Home, 709 N. Main St. in Hubbard, where a prayer service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Helen Perkovich
Helen M. Perekovich, 54, of Newton Falls, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998 at Cortland Quality Care Nursing Home. Born May 11, 1944 in Newton Falls, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Sneg) Speno. Mrs. Perekovich retired from Trumbull Lamp in 1987. She enjoyed golf and gardening. Survivors include her husband, Louis, whom she married November 15, 1980; stepdaughter, Jodie Coppengers of North Carolina; sisters, Elizabeth Welsko and Julia Ford, both of Newton Falls, and Grace Bryant of Lake Milton; and two step-grandchildren. Her parents; brother, Joseph Speno; and sister, Joann Gregory, died previously. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Cemetery. Helen Shuman
Helen Saley Shuman, 82, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 21, 1916 in Moundsville, W. Va., she was the daughter of Theodore Frank and Eva (Halechko) Saley. A former Lorain resident, she moved to Ravenna in 1976. Mrs. Shuman was a member of Solon Community Church. She volunteered at Anna Marie Nursing Home in Aurora. Survivors include her husband, Ralph L.; son, Donald (Nancy) of California; daughters, Mrs. Earl (Sue) Starnes of Perry and Mrs. Bud (Julie) Minor of Aurora; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Eight brothers and sisters, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Mark Thomas officiating. Beatrice Kyser
Beatrice Wood Kyser, 84, of Warren, died Thursday, June 4, 1998 at Cortland Quality Care Nursing Center. Born June 11, 1913 in Garrettsville, she was the daughter of Millard A. Wood and Helen Belle Green. She lived for many years in Newton Falls and in Warren. Mrs. Kyser was a homemaker and farmer. She was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church. Survivors include sons, Laurence of Lexington, S.C. and Kenneth of Higley, Ariz.; daughters, Nancy Bowker of Youngstown, Mary Ann George of Mansfield, Janet Bauer of Southington, Barbara Zenobi of Champion, Beverly Mohan of Newton Falls, and Christy Sweet of Cortland; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ralph Wood of Hopkins, Mo., and Norm Wood of Hiram; and sisters Nira Giddings of Swan Point, Md., Harrietbelle Anderson of Kirtland, and Ruth Rising of Windham. June D. Cosentino, 66, of Duffield Road, Brimfield, died Monday, June 1, 1998 at Akron City Hospital. Born July 24, 1931 in Tyrone, Pa., she was the daughter of Melvin And Virginia (Justice) Price. Mrs. Cosentino previously attended the Living Water Fellowship and Word of His Grace. Survivors include her husband, Raymond, whom she married in 1948; son, Raymond Jr., of Lewistown, Pa.; daughters Carolyn Eaton of Michigan, Sondra Lamb of Akron, Rae Jean Wilson of Akron, Wanda Earley of Cartersville, Ga., and Tina Freudeman of Akron; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother, Virginia Schilling, of Huntingdon, Pa.; brother, Jesse Schilling, of Huntingdon, Pa. Arthur Sheperd
Arthur Eugene Sheperd, 80, of Diamond, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998 at home after a long illness. Born Nov. 18, 1917 in Leon, Ky., he was the son of Thomas and Hannah (Ison) Sheperd. A former Kent resident, he had lived in the Lake Milton and Diamond area for eight years. Mr. Sheperd retired from Empire Detroit Steel in Mansfield, where he was a furnace operator. He was a member of the General Assembly Church of God in Newton Falls. He enjoyed gardening, reading the Bible and watching the World Wrestling Federation. Survivors include his wife, Emily Marie (Whitt), whom he married Sept. 29, 1934; sons, Robert of Waco, Ky., and Donald and Gary, both of Mansfield; daughters, Mrs. Chester (Hannah) Lawhorn of Mansfield, Mrs. Shelton (Brenda) Morris of Diamond, Mrs. Henry (Linda) Smith of Galion, and Mrs. John (Irene) Stone of Galion; 26 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, William and Jessie, both of Grayson, Ky.; and sisters, Geraldine Mills of Lakeside, Calif., and Judy Cornett of Houston, Texas. Roy Benshoff
Roy O. Benshoff, 87, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a brief illness. Born Aug. 9, 1910 in Randolph, he was the son of Benjamin and Mayme (Rhodes) Benshoff. He was an area resident all his life. Mr. Benshoff formerly was employed by the Ravenna school system, Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna and First United Methodist Church of Ravenna. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Christian Church of Ravenna, attended the United Church of Christ in Kent, and was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 12 in Ravenna. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Bullock (Gatewood); son James Bullock of Ravenna; daughter, Dixie (Tim) Benshoff Ludick of Aurora; and three grandchildren. His daughter, Jacqueline Yvonne Bolin; sister, Thelma Fern Benshoff; and brothers, Glen and Stanley (Pete), died previously.. Mary E. Belden
Former Windham resident Mary E. Belden, 73, of Montpelier, Ohio, died Sunday, May 3, 1998. Born June 29, 1924 in Lansing, Mich., she was the daughter of Allen and Gertrude (Siebert) Ammons. Mrs. Belden was employed by the Windham school district as a grade school librarian for 20 years until she retired in 1985. She also was a volunteer story teller for 12 years at Storrer Elementary School in Montpelier. She was a member of the Friday Club in Windham and the Montpelier Homemakers Club. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Montpelier,United Methodist Women, Mary Martha Circle and a Sunday School teacher. Survivors include her sons, George (Helena) of Kent, David (Barbara) of Montpelier and Deane (Mary Ann) of Pittsburgh; daughters, Penny L. of Cleveland Heights, Mrs. Greg (Diane) Harding of Cleveland Heights and Rosemary Weger of Montpelier; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers,Judson Ammons of Traverse City, Mich., Robert Ammons of Howland and Ed Ammons of Warren; sisters, Mrs. Leon (Lois) Geiwitz of Sharpsville, Pa., Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Klug of Warren, and Mrs. Joe (Pat) Sabo of Brookfield. Her husband, Harold A., whom she married Sept. 16, 1945, died in 1971. Her brother, Jesse Ammons, died previously. James F. "Fred" Murphy
James F. "Fred" Murphy, 77, of Hudson Road, Kent, died Sunday, May 3, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Sept. 8, 1920 in Buchtel, Ohio, he was the son of Selby and Ruth (Moore) Murphy. Mr. Murphy worked in sales throughout his life. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, he was a mechanic and aviator. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He earned the American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle East Campaign Medal with Bronze and Silver Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He attended Ohio University and an aviation technology school. Survivors include his sons, Michael T. (Lenore) of West Salem, Robert S. of Streetsboro and Jeffrey D. (Mary) of Brimfield, nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, brother, Eugene of McArthur; and sisters, Vivian Blackstone of Florida, Mary Lou Sandberg of Parma and Bonnie Whatley, formerly of Texas. His wife, Betty Ann (Schuler), died in 1993. His son, Matthew K., died in 1990. A brother, Walter, died in 1989. Private graveside services were held today at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent handled arrangements.

Helen Appel
Former Kent resident Helen L. Appel, 98, died Sunday, May 3, 1998 at Aurora Manor Care Center following a year of failing health. Born June 7, 1899 in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Harry and Edith Swain. She had resided in Kent for more than 50 years. Mrs. Appel was retired from Davey Tree Expert Co. in Kent. Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Eshelman of Beliot; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren;and five great-great grandchildren. Her husband, Roy, died in 1971. Her daughter, Shirley Guilfoil; grandson, Jeffrey Eshelman; brothers, Wilton and Harry; and sister, Marian Fadeley, also died previously. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Stephen Rebic
CHARLESTOWN - Stephen Rebic, 86, died Monday, May 4, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, following a brief illness. Born Aug. 26, 1911 in Cleveland, he was the son of Michael and Julia (Mandula) Rebic. A former Ravenna resident, he had lived in Charlestown for three years. Mr. Rebic was retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber, where he was an engineer. Survivors include his stepson William Rogers of Ravenna; stepdaughter Coleen Mack of Akron; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, John of Ravenna; and sister, Ann Novak of Timberlake. His wife, Ruth, died in 1992. His brothers, George, Michael, Andrew and Joseph, and sister, Lillian, died previously. No calling hours will be held. Private family services were held today at Maple Grove Cemetery Chapel, with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

ATWATER - Wilbur (Bill) Berger, 41, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a brief illness. Born July 27, 1956 in Alliance, he was the son of William T. and Dorothy M. (Collage) Berger. Mr. Berger was employed as a tool and die maker at Chrysler Corporation. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph. He was also a baseball coach for the Atwater Hot Stove League. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Survivors include his wife Susan (Tully); daughter, Melissa S.,at home; parents, William and Dorothy of Las Vegas, Nevada; and sisters, Teena Hayes and Stacey Collage of Las Vegas. Fred Wilson Bowen, 65, formerly of Ravenna, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Maryland. Born May 25, 1932 in Ohio, he was the son of Henry and Maude (Boyce) Bowen. Mr. Bowen worked as an operating engineer for the Sun Pipe Line Co. of Kent. Survivors include his sons, Timothy of Lexington Park, Md., and Mark and Patrick of St. Leonard, Md.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Albert of Alliance; sisters Ida Cannon of Carson City, Nev., Suzie of Alliance, and Lena Hunsicker of Florida. His wife, Ruth E. (Fertig) died in 1987. His brothers, Harry and Glenn, and sister, Jane Boyle, also died previously. Helen Boyer
RANDOLPH - Helen Webb Boyer, 93, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at her home after a long illness. Born July 8, 1904 in Van Wert County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Vern and Clara (Begg) Webb. After graduating from Convoy High School, she graduated from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Mrs. Boyer was a retired teacher. She taught in the Convoy, Akron, Rootstown and Randolph school districts. She retired three times with a total of 35 years of teaching. She was a member of Randolph United Methodist Church and an associate member of the Bradenton Methodist Church. She was past matron of the Ravenna Order of the Eastern Star, an officer of the Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem and Order of Amaranth in Bradenton, Fla. She was a member of the Portage County Retired Teachers Association, the Randolph Garden Club and Hobby Club. Survivors include her son, Richard (Diana) Boyer of Mogadore; daughter, Linda (David) Barr of Mogadore; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Raymond Boyer, whom she married in 1936. Visitation will be held from10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Randolph United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Graham will officiate. Katheryn Dorsey
Katheryn Dorsey, 82, of Ravenna died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Altercare of Ravenna. She had Alzheimer's disease. Born June 26, 1915 in Akron, she was the daughter of Stephen and Katheryn (Knoch) Willig. She was a longtime resident of Fairlawn. Mrs. Dorsey was a nurse practitioner in the Akron area for 40 years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and gardening. Survivors include her son, Richard Ellerbrock of Akron; daughter, Sheryl Patrick of Garrettsville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl Willig of Akron and Stephen Willig of Barberton; sisters, Madelyn Udell of Washington, D.C., Betty Andraka of Bradenton, Fla., Ruth Willig of Cuyahoga Falls and Donna Pappas of Fairlawn. Her husbands, Al Ellerbrock and James Dorsey, and son, Randy, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, whereservices will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Dwaine Stanley officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville. Memorials may be made to the Nelson United Methodist Church in Garrettsville.

Dana Hamrick
Dana Hamrick, 57, of Cuyahoga Falls, a member of Victory Baptist Church in Brimfield, died Monday, May 4, 1998. Born in Webster Springs, W. Va., he was the son of Melvin and Ethel Hamrick. He had lived in Cuyahoga Falls for the past 30 years. Mr. Hamrick was a member of United Auto Workers Local No. 420 and had 29 years of service at the Ford Stamping Plant in Walton Hills. He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, turkey shooting and was a knowledgable mechanic. Survivors include his wife Thelma, to whom he was married 38 years; son, Randy (Suzanne) Hamrick; daughter Mrs. Jeff (Carol) Clifton; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Carol), Arnold (Norma), and Stanley (Sandy); sister Mrs. Tom (Daisy) Necina; step-mother, Rosey; and sister-in-law, Betty. His parents, brother, Gary, and sister, Carol Sue, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home in Stow, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev.
