Joyce Hardgrove

Joyce Ray Franklin Hardgrove lived a large and long life, full of history and tales, before succumbing to the villainy of cancer on Sept. 30, 2013, at the age of 81.

"Parents are like shuttles on a loom. They join the threads of the past with the threads of the future and leave their own bright patterns as they go."
~ Mr. Fred Rogers

O, what a bright pattern she left behind!

The youngest daughter of Francies Henry and Iva Blanche McKinney Franklin, Joyce was born on March 29, 1932, in Wewoka, Okla., into a large family.

Her three older sisters, Fleeda Marie Franklin Jones, Edra Mabel Franklin Hopkins, and Paulyne Francies Franklin Criswell, were like a second set of mothers whom she adored.

Her only brother was her beloved and ornery James McKinney Franklin.

That extra parentage was soon doubled with in-laws she considered her own brothers and sister: Fred Jones, Sr.; Hubert Hopkins; Raymond Criswell; and Vivian Franklin (all deceased).

Music, books, and education were paramount in her life.

Singing gospel with her sisters, leading Girl Scout songs, playing clarinet and drums in the Wewoka High School Marching Band (Class of 1950), and turning any conversation into a song as if she actually lived in a Broadway musical filled her, and others, with joy.

Her love of reading and learning were shared deeply with her children.

Son, Micheal William Hardgrove, of the home, is illustrator and author of a children’s book The Ogre and the Angel.

Her daughters are college professors: Mary Kathleen Hardgrove teaches theatre and serves as Costume Designer and Archivist at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, and Dr. Teresa Joyce Hardgrove Rothrock teaches English Education and serves as the Director of Assessment at East Central University in Ada, where son-in-law Benny Ray Rothrock also teaches and serves as Instructional Technology Design Specialist.

Joyce was preceded in death by one daughter, Shari Gayle Hardgrove, in 1956.

Joyce wove together a tapestry of interesting careers, plug-and-jack telephone operator; legal secretary for Kerr McGee and others; librarian; writer and editor for area newspapers; and landman for over three decades.

Each career incorporated her desire to help people and her love of research.

She even authored a column for the Seminole Producer called "Family Trees and Tales."

She was known as G’ma and GiGi to her three grandsons and their families, Starr William and Bonny Weeks Hardgrove of Chicago; Brandan Ray and Monica Barnes Rothrock, with twins Keenan Ray and Chloe Ireland, of Ada; and Logan Scot and Sara Brewer Rothrock, with sons, Celtan Scot and Aedan Patrick, of Ada.

A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins were just as precious to her as if they had been raised in her own household.

No matter how tough life could be, Joyce made everyone feel welcome and confident in persevering. Her resilient spirit was both inspiring and contagious!

A single mother of three, Joyce could nap through loud noises made while playing, but the instant it turned to crying or arguing, she sprang into action. She always said she could "only sleep as long as there were happy noises."

In deference to this, a Happy Noises Memorial Service will be held in honor of Joyce Ray Franklin Hardgrove on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wewoka.

Her ashes will eventually be memorialized at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka.
