Robert Upchurch

Robert "Howard" Upchurch of Holdenville, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Heritage Village Nursing Home in Holdenville.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1930 in Holdenville to R.J. "Bonnie" and Ethel Mae (Norris) Upchurch.

Howard graduated from Moss High School.

He worked in the oil and gas industry for many years, retiring from Redco as Plant Superintendent.

He attended the First Church of God for many years, he enjoyed helping people, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Howard is preceded in death by his wife, Charlene (Stringfellow) Upchurch; his parents, R.J. "Bonnie" and Ethel Mae (Norris) Upchurch; one great grandchild, Holden Hughes; two brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his children, Charlotte Horton and husband, David of Seminole, Kathy Johns and husband, Les of Eufaula, Jim Upchurch and wife, Kay of Shawnee and Angelia Upchurch of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Cheryl Stevens, Alicia Hughes and husband, Jeromy, Courtney Upchurch and Kristi Splawn and husband, Chris; four great grandchildren, Hunter Hughes, Brittney Stevens, McKenzie Stevens and Emrie Splawn; and one sister, Norma Summy and husband Tommy.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the First Church of God in Holdenville, with Rev. Jon Ewers officiating. Interment will be at the McMahan Cemetery East of Horntown.

Funeral services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville.

James Vanlandingham

James Vanlandingham, 80, longtime Seminole resident died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

James was born Nov. 30, 1932 in Shawnee, Okla. to parents, Alvie L. Vanlandingham and Faye (Norton) Vanlandingham.

James graduated from Warner High School; he attended college and received his associate’s degree.

James during his life had lived in Ringling, Okla.; Healdton, Okla.; Thomas, Okla.; and Seminole, mostly while working for Atlantic Richfield.

James retired from ARCO as the Production and plant superintendent for the Seminole Plant.

After retirement he spent the next 25 years buying and selling oil and gas leases with his son, Mike.

James loved to raise and show horses, and even judged several horse shows. He loved cattle ranching and spending his days in the hayfield.

James was a faithful Christian and was an Elder at the Seminole Church of Christ.

James served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and was a staff sergeant at the time of his discharge.

James married Ann Crosby on Sept. 14, 1952 in Shawnee, Okla. and would have celebrated their 61 years together this September.

James is survived by his wife, Ann Vanlandingham of Seminole; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sylvia Vanlandingham of Seminole; a daughter and son-in-law Dava and Chris Clark of Shawnee, Okla.; and a special son, Bryan Lucas of Seminole.

He is also survived by five brothers, Howard and Talhia Vanlandingham of Shawnee, Charles and Judy Vanlandingham of Tahlequah, Okla., Burl and Barbara Vanlandingham of Shawnee, David and Kay Vanlandingham of Tex., Leonard and Cherie Vanlandingham of Galena, Kans.; two sisters, Pauline and Paul Rooker of Stillwater, Okla. and Mary Littleton of Tecumseh, Okla.

His grandchildren, April and Paul Vail, Derek and Carrie Clark, Jamie and Andrew Murray, Michael Vanlandingham, and Jenna Vanlandingham survive him, along with his great grandchildren, Tyler Crandall, Megan Vail, Carson Clark, Maya Murray and Maggie Murray and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 at the Seminole Church of Christ on North 99 Highway with Chris Stinnett officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole with Military Honors.

Casket bearers will be Bryan Lucas, Derek Clark, Andrew Murray, Michael Vanlandingham, Tyler Crandall and Carson Clark.

Honorary bearers will be Jack Mattingly, Sr., Alan Eck, Lee Stillwell, Palmer Smith and Cecil Sullivan.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Carl Vaughan

Carl Edward Vaughan, 85, of Perry, Okla., was the son of Clell and Minnie (Atkinson) Vaughan.

He was born Dec. 7, 1927 in Seminole and died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 at his residence in Perry, Okla.

He attended Mt. View School east of Seminole where he graduated in 1943. Carl attended twelve years of school and never missed a day of school.

Carl married Yvonne Poston on Jan. 10, 1955 in Ada. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1997.

He served his county in the United State Army at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas from Oct. 27, 1954 to Oct. 26, 1956.

He resided in Konawa from 1956 to 1957 and in Stroud, Okla. from 1958 to 1969.

He worked in the oilfield in Stroud with American Oilfield Supply Company.

When he moved to Perry, Okla. in 1969 he went to work for Jones and Laughlin Oilfield Supply Company until 1977 when he opened his own business, Big J Pump and Supply.

Carl retired in 1987.

Carl enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at the Brown-Dugger Funeral Home Chapel in Perry, Okla.

Rev. Lee Tarrant officiated. Services were under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home in Perry.

Memorials may be made to charity of donor’s choice in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th Perry, Oklahoma 73077.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Denise Vaughan of Perry; one son, Christopher Pinkham of Perry; one brother, Ray Vaughan of Cassville, Mo.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne; parents, Clell and Minnie Vaughan; two brothers and one sister.

Laura Vaughan

Laura "Marie" Vaughan, 84 year-old lifelong Seminole resident died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Wewoka Healthcare Center in Wewoka, Okla.

She was born July 17, 1928 in Maud, Okla. to Ambrose Vaughan and Ida Mae (Lankford) Vaughan.

She worked as a sales clerk.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Ida Mae Vaughan; and one brother, Clyde William Vaughan.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Cummings Cemetery in Maud where she was laid to rest next to her parents.

Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla. was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Vieux

Betty "Clarice" Vieux, 56 year-old, lifelong Saint Louis resident passed from this life on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 at her home.

She was born Aug. 28, 1957 in Seminole, Okla. to parents Charles Franklin "Charlie" Vieux and Mary Elizabeth (Holmes) Vieux.

Clarice attended Saint Louis Elementary School until the 8th grade and graduated from Maud High School in 1976. She went on to continue her education attending two years of college.

Clarice was a member of the Saint Louis Round-up Club where she had been very active and even served as Rodeo Queen.

In High School she was involved in many activities including basketball and several other school organizations.

She also loved to play league softball.

Clarice was also a member of the Saint Louis First Baptist Church where she had accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized as a teenager.

Clarice, a Citizen Potawatomi Nation enrolled citizen, was a long-standing employee of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe.

She began working with the tribe in 1974. Her first job with the tribe was as a Court Clerk.

In 1994 she began working for the Tribal Administrator as his Administrative Assistant. Clarice was instrumental in helping establish the Tribe’s court system and in 1997 through the current date she worked in a dual capacity as an Administrative Assistant and B.I.A. Specialist.

She was a dedicated advocate for self-determination and self-governance and was with the Tribe during the infancy stage of implementing these programs under P.I. 93-638, as amended, known as the Indian Self-Determination Education Assistance Act.

Clarice was currently working under Governor of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, B. Edwina Butler-Wolfe.

Clarice was part of 12 Tribal Administrations at the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. She began her work when John Sloat was Governor and was here to see the second woman leader be elected and placed in Office.

Clarice leaves to cherish her memory her son, Jessie Williams and his wife Cassie of Earlsboro, Okla.; two sisters, Teresa Vieux of Tecumseh, Okla., Charlene Killian of Saint Louis, Okla.; four grandchildren, Gavin Williams, Alexis Frantz, Jaxon Williams, and Jesslyn Williams; by her first husband and the father of her son, Frank Williams and his wife Susan of Maud; she is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends.

Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mary Vieux; one brother, Nick Vieux; one sister Elizabeth "Beth" Vieux; Clarice’s former husband, Freddie Murdock; and one brother-in-law, Dewayne Thorpe.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Saint Louis, Okla. with Pastor Glenn Peck officiating the service. Dub Howell will provide Tribal music. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery near Konawa.

Pallbearers will be Cody Williams, Randy Killian, Evan Murry, Bobby Armstrong, Joe Ray Milburn, and Rob Milburn.

Honorary bearers will be Frank Williams, Donnie Jordan, Nobie Lowden, Mike Hunter, and Isaac Gibson.

Kay Waldron

Kay Waldron, 89, longtime Seminole resident died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at Seminole Care and Rehabilitation Center in Seminole.

Kay was born Sept. 11, 1923 in Logan, Tex. to Preston and Alma (Williams) Barnett.

Kay moved to Seminole 65 years ago from Henderson, Tex.

She was a homemaker.

She so loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and great-grandchildren. She was blessed with a long life to watch them grow.

"Miss Kay" loved the Lord and spent many joyful years serving Him. Her church family was a great part of her life. She was a faithful servant and taught Sunday school for many years at Trinity Baptist Church in Letha where she was a member.

Her daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and David Bryant of Seminole, Okla.; grandchildren, Barry Bryant and his wife Clarissa Bryant and Beau Bryant and her great-grandchildren Taygen, Tara and Taylor survive Kay.

Her parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded her.

Graveside services are planned for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens east of Seminole on highway 270 with Ron Duvall officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations by made to the Trinity Baptist Church south of Seminole, at P.O. Box 1030, Seminole, Okla. 74818.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Beverly Walker

Beverly Jo Walker went to be with the Lord, Tuesday night, March 12, 2013 in Shawnee, Okla. at the age of 71 years.

She was born Aug. 31, 1941 in Wewoka, Okla. to the late Charles Joseph and Bessie (Kernel) Walker.

Beverly was a graduate of Wewoka high school.

She received her LPN licenses from St. Anthony's Hospital. She previously worked for Elmwood Nursing Home, Jearl Smart at Wewoka Care Center and prior to her retirement Wewoka Indian Health Clinic.

Beverly was a very caring person always making sure her patients ate and had clothing to wear.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She loved to watch basketball, football and going out with her co-workers reminiscing about the past.

She was a member of the Nurcup Harjo band and Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church.

Preceding Beverly in death are her parents; and granddaughter, Kendalyn Campbell.

Survivors include children, Rachel Campbell, Randolph Garfield; and grandson, Jeremy Campbell all of Wewoka; brother, Charles H. Walker of Melissa, Tex., and sister, Elizabeth Betty Walker of Burnsville, Minn., and a host of other relatives and friends.

Wake service will be 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel and burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
