Leon Harjo

Leon Harjo former Seminole resident died on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the age of 71 in Oklahoma City. Leon was born January 22, 1939 at Holdenville, to parents Benny and Effie Culley.

Leon was a former police officer and also worked as a general labor at the Civic Center in Oklahoma City.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Benny and Effie Culley.

Leon is survived by three sons, Larry Harjo of Moore, Leon Harjo and Tommy Harjo both of Oklahoma City. Two daughters; Tina Harjo, of Moore, and Tywanna Harjo of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by three brothers; Johnny Bighead, of Seminole, Billy Hulbay and John Culley both of Kansas. One sister, Augustine Culley of Tulsa, Oklahoma, thirteen grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the Seminole Nation Community Building in the Strothers community with the funeral to follow 10 a.m. Monday, August 2, 2010 at the Seminole Nation Community Building, Strothers. Interment will follow at the Harjo Family Cemetery in Cromwell.

Serving as casket bearers: Larry Harjo, Leon J. Harjo, Tommy Harjo, Christopher Bandy, Tommy Ray Bighead and Matthew Bighead. Honorary casket bearers; T-Ray Bighead, Johnny Bighead, Jonathan Bighead, Joshua Harjo, Christopher Harjo and Zac Peaney.

Buddy Harjo

Lifelong Seminole resident Buddy Keith Harjo, age 56, died Thursday, March 18, 2010, in Oklahoma City.

He was born Aug. 12, 1953, in Pawnee, to Isaac Harjo and Juanita (Little) Wise.

He was band chief and chairman of Hecete Band and also served as a council rep for Seminole Nation. He worked for New Horizon Nursing Home, in Konawa. He was a member of the Full Gospel Church and pastured for the Assemblies of God. He graduated from Midwest City High School and attended Haskell Indian College, in Lawrence, Kan.

He is survived by his mother, of Seminole; wife, Nancy Harjo, of the home; sons, Brian Keith Harjo Howe, of Round Rock, Texas, Buddy Harjo, Jr., of Wewoka, and Isaac Harjo, of Colo., daughters, Melanie Deatherage, of Seminole, and Anitra Rooks, of Calif.; brothers, Steven Harjo, of Seminole, Ronnie Harjo, of Seminole, and Howard Harjo, of Sapulpa; sisters, Rowena Gonzales, of Tulsa, and Amy Fixico, of Seminole and 12 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2010, at the God’s Glory Temple with Rev. Don Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Tallahassee Cemetery.

Wake services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday Wake services will be held at 6 p.m., at God’s Glory Temple.

Pallbearers will be: Leo Moppin, Daniel Tanyan, Ronald Daniels, Steven Barnett, Ronnie Harjo, Jr., Neal Harjo, Adam Tanyan and Tony Fixico.

Honorary Bearers will be: Afton Hill, Brian Harge, Jerald Fixico, Junior Harge, Corey Davis, Tim Davis, Joel Davis, Siah Davis, Calvin Harjo, Terry Harjo, Randy Harjo and Jordan Gonzales.

Jonell Harjo

Memorial Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sturday, August 28, 2010 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel for former resident Jonell Marie Robertson Harjo . Officiating will be Rev. Dan Factor.

Born August 15, 1985 in Oklahoma City, OK to Earl Ray and LaDonna Marie (Hilligoss) Robertson. She passed away Sunday August 22, 2010 at the age of 25 years in Ardmore, OK.

Jonell attended Wewoka High School and at the time of her death she was working for I-Hop restaurant. She enjoyed shopping, music, and playing with her daughter.

Jonell is preceded in death by her Mother Ladonna Robertson.

Survivors include her father Earl Robertson, of Wewoka, daughter Hailie Marie Harjo, brothers

John Hilligoss and wife Jamie of Cushing, OK; Jason Robertson-Beeler and wife Hollie, of Wewoka, OK: Sisters Desiree Morris of Wewoka, and Jennifer Harjo Knox of Norman, OK.

Luci Harjo

Luci Deere Harjo, 62, longtime Seminole resident died at her home on Friday, June 18, 2010. Luci was born on July 18, 1947 to Jackson and Inez (Mitchell) Deere.

Luci was a graduate of Seminole Public Schools and attended Seminole State College and also three years at the University of Oklahoma. Luci was a Seminole Nation General Council member for over 20 years and also served on the Seminole City Council for two years. She was a member of the Indian Nation Baptist Church in Seminole, she also was a member of the Seminole Democratic Women's League and Leadership Seminole.

Luci was the J.O.M. coordinator, Title 4 program, for Seminole Public Schools and the Director of J.O.M. for the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.

Luci was married to Jonah Harjo on January 31, 1964 in Seminole.

Luci is survived by her husband Jonah Harjo of Seminole, Five sons: John Harjo, Joey Harjo, Jeremy Harjo and Derek Harjo all of Seminole, and Mike Harjo of Wewoka, one daughter Celestine Leader of Seminole. A brother Larry Deere of Oklahoma City, and two sisters Kathryn Deere of Tecumseh, and Joanne Gentry of Pine Bluff, Wyoming also survived her. Fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive her.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole. Viewing will begin Saturday June 19, at her home at 900 W. Broadway Apt # 501 in Seminole, with a wake service on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 6-8 P.M. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.

Bill Barnett and Bill Hobia will officiate the services, and casket bearers will be Eric Browning, Zack Ragan, Hunter Harjo, Robert Deere, Jamie Ray Deere and Forrest Atkins.

Honorary bearers will be John Harjo, Joey Harjo, Mike Harjo, Jeremy Harjo, Derek Harjo, Joseph Harjo, Barney Leader and Jacob Harjo.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Opal Harjo

Services for former Seminole county resident Opal Nanette Harjo, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Arbeka United Methodist Church, Okemah with Rev. Paul Fixico officiating and assisted by Rev Dave Long Jr. and Rev Abe Jackson and interment at TUKVPVCE Methodist Church Cemetery.

Wake Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Arebka United Methodist Church at Okemah.

Pallbearers will be Virgil Harjo, Wilson Harjo, Arharlock Buckley, Sam White, Woody White, Mike Harjo, and Mihe- Coby Chibitty.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: D.J. Stephenson, Chebon Tiger, Noah White, and J.B. Smith.

Opal Nanetta (Coachman) Harjo passed away Monday, March 29th, 2010, at the age of 50 years in Tulsa, OK.

She was born April 9, 1959 in Claremore, OK to Joe and Nettie (McCullar) Coachman. She graduated from Butner High School and attended Northeastern College for 2 years.

Opal was a member of Arbeka United Methodist Church, Okemah and was adopted into the Ponca and Kiowa Tribes. She loved to be the head cook and spend time with her family and friends. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. She loved singing the Native songs.

On October 25, 1985 Opal and Vincent Mike Hajro were married in Okemah and to this marriage seven children were born.

Preceding Opal in death are her parents, son Chris Harjo, and two sisters Mary Helen Coachman, and Helena Tartsah.

Survivors include: Husband Vincent Mike Harjo, sons Tenetke C. Harjo of the home; Wilson Harjo of Prague; Virgil Harjo of Shawnee; D.J.Stephenson of Anadarko; daughters Mikka F. Harjo of the home; Jerrie L. Harjo of Prague; Deedra Tainpeah of Norman; seventeen grandchildren and -six great-grandchildren; sisters Pat Coachman of Earlsboro; Cindy Tainpeah of Paden; Margaret Battiest of Jenks; Penny Cleghorn, Apache; brothers Donnie Simpson of Wilson; Frank Coachman, Okemah; extended family Rev Thomas Roughface of Ponca Tribe; Rev Charles Quztone of Kiowa Tribe and Richard Tartsah Sr. of Kiowa Tribe.

Ronnie Harjo

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Ronnie Lee Harjo are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the Hitchitee United Methodist Church in Seminole with a burial to follow at Hitchitee Cemetery.

The service will be officiated by Thomas Little and Mildred Harjo.

A wake service will be held at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday wake services will be held at the Hitchitee United Methodist Church.

Harjo died on March 28, 2010 at Carl Albert Indian Hospital at the age of 53.

He was born on August 5, 1956 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Isaac Harjo and Juanita (Little) Wise.

He graduated from Varnum High School and was a college graduate from Haskell Jr. College.

Harjo attended Hitchitee United Methodist Church in Seminole, he was a member of the Mekusekey Baptist Church.

He retired in 1992 from Law Enforcement where he served as a Police Officer at Elmore City, and worked security for Seminole Nation and Carl Albert Hospital and Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, he was also a booking officer at Shawnee Police Department.

Harjo is preceded in death by father, Isaac Harjo, step-father, Roosevelt Barnett, brother, Buddy Harjo, grandparents Buddy Little, Alice Miller and Lonnie Harjo.

He is survived by his mother Juanita Wise of Seminole, three sons, Ronnie Harjo, Jr. of Moore, Terry Harjo and Randy of Oklahoma City, two brothers; Steven Harjo of Seminole and Howard Hugh Harjo of Sapulpa and two sisters Rowena Gonzales of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Amy Fixico of Seminole. He is also survived by six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be: Ramon Gonzales, Steven Barnett, Neal Harjo, Isaac Harjo, Anthony Fixico, Ray Jackson, Jerrald Fixico, Buddy K. Harjo, Jr.

Honorary Bearers will be; John Porter, Joe Ahhaitty, Bruce Harjo, Nathan Harjo and Percy Harjo.

Vincent Harjo

Former Seminole County resident Vincent "V. J." Harjo died on October 31st, 2010 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. V. J. Harjo was born August 14th, 1945 in Los Angeles California to Louis Harjo and Lucy Stewart Wolf.

He graduated from Sequoyah High School in 1966 and then attended Rose State College. He served in the US Army during the Viet Nam War.

V.J. was a member of Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa. V.J. married Peggy Sue Jones Harjo on October 6, 1967.

He is survived by his wife Peggy of the home, his children Victor Harjo of Stilwell, , Vanessa Tiger of Mid West City, Victoria Harjo Baldridge of Stilwell, and Robert Harjo of Stilwell. Other survivors include his Sister Lillie Mae Petete of Moore, and four Grandchildren.

V.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Robert Wolf Jr.

Wake services are to be held Tuesday November 2, 2010 at 7 p.m. at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services are Wednesday November 3, 2010, at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. with Rev. Houston Tiger Officiating.

Interment will follow at the Davis family Cemetery in Sasakwa, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers are Vernon Harjo, Lloyd Harjo, Freddie Billy, Jose Rodriguez, Michael Tiger, Stefan Harjo, and Sam Starr.

Honorary Pallbearers are Robert Evans, Scott Petete, and Steve Petete.

Lillian Harjo-Morgan

Lillian LeeAnn Harjo -Morgan was born on July 25, 2010 in Buffalo, New York she passed away on July 25, 2010 she was one hour old.

She was born to Starla J. Harjo and Christopher Lynn Morgan

She is survived by her Godmothers Winter (Spunk) Coker and Jayla Snyder, Grandmother, Kathryn Harjo and Sheryl Crabtree and Grandfathers Kirk Fye, Paul Fredericks and Kenneth Hernandez, Sr.

Great grandmother, Fannie Hernandez, two aunts, Lani Fye and Hailey Hernandez, great grandpa, Thomas Jones, Sr., four uncles, Meche Harjo, Kenneth Hernandez, Jr, Kirk Fye II, and Sterling Fye.

Preceded in death by great grandmother Lina Harjo, Sylvia Harjo, great uncle, Lincoln Jones, great grandpa, Robert Hernandez.

Lillian will be taken to the home on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 601 N. Jefferson for wake services on Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 7 – 8:00 P.M. and Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Monday, August 2, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Houston Tiger and Dorsey Nero officiating. Interment will follow at Harjo Family Cemetery in Seminole, Ok.

Pallbearers will be: James Fixico and Thomas Jones, Jr.
