Adeline Hess

Adeline Layaou Hess died on March 2, 2010, at age 94, at Bethany Manor Skilled Care Center, in Horseheads, N.Y., with family by her side. She was born on November 6, 1915, in Luzerne County, Pa., to Jennie Decker Layaou and Francis B. Layaou and was the oldest of thirteen children.

She was an educator and at one time or another taught in every grade from kindergarten to college level and was a State Coordinator of Public School Library Construction in Pennsylvania. Her first college degree was from Bloomsburg (PA) Normal School. At age 18, during her first year of teaching, she eloped with Charles Frederick Hess, Jr., and together they raised three children: Rev. Charles F. Hess III of Corning, NY, Donald F. Hess, of Liberty, Pa., and daughter and son-in-law Jane Adeline Hess Bonser, and Dr. Curtis H. Bonser, of Seminole.

She earned a B.S. from Mansfield (PA) University and a Masters in Library Science from Marywood College, Scranton, Pa.

During her career she was nominated and selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Women and was listed in that publication for 20 years. She was active her entire life in the Methodist Church and served as a Lay Speaker in several congregations.

Her husband preceded her in death, in 1978.

She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.

At her request, cremation will be followed by a Memorial Service at a later date to be announced.

William Hicks

Funeral services for William I. "Bill" Hicks are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel in Cleveland, Oklahoma.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, and is under the direction of Barnes Friederich Funeral Home of Midwest City.

Hicks died Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at the age of 85.

He was born to Carl and Alta (Schaffer) Hicks on February 6, 1925 in Skedee, Oklahoma.

Hicks was previously an Elder at the Cleveland Church of Christ.

His professional career included being a co-owner of Hicks Mobil in Cleveland, store manager for the Otasco in Cleveland, and he was also a pipeliner.

Hicks married Verena Mae Blaylock on July 20, 1952 in Seminole.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Alta Hicks; his wife, Verena Hicks; one infant son, Tony Hicks; one sister, Jane Osborn; and one brother, Ralph Hicks.

Hicks is survived by two sons, Stan and his wife Cathy of Wichita, Kansas, Steve and his wife Bobbye of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Anne and her husband David Boyett of Midwest City; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edna Higdon

Edna V. Higdon, age 95, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Hospice House, in Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 5, 1914, in Nowata, to William Thomas and Anna Bell Reddington Mills. She was a 1933 graduate of Wilson High School, and was a member of the Eastwood Church of Christ. She was a homemaker.

She married Dave Floyd Higdon on Oct. 18, 1933, in Wilson.

She is survived by her sons, Paul Tom, and Dave Higdon, all of Hutchinson, Kan.; sisters, Dorothy Davis, of Midwest City, Mildred Roe, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Ida Mae Roe, of Godley, Texas; Imogene Esau, of Hutchinson, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great g grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters; and daughter, Norma Higdon.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Elliott Mortuary in, Hutchinson, Kan. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Seminole.

She will lie in state at Elliott Mortuary 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and the family will greet friends on Thursday 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastwood Church of Christ or Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, Kan., 67501.

Terry Hill

Seminole resident Terry Hill died Tuesday, August 17, 2010 in Shawnee at the age of 65.

He was born on August 8, 1945 in Greenwood, South Carolina to Marion Hill and Patty (Sims) Hill.

Hill served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1966.

He owned and operated his own trucking company. He loved gardening, the outdoors, his animals and loved his family. He never met a stranger. He attended New Life Church in Wewoka.

He is survived by his fiance’ Rosa L. Nunnelley, four sons; Shannon Moore of Colorado, Gabriel Hill of Arizona, James Wilson of Seminole and Fred Wilson of Seminole; one daughter, Polly Harjo of Maud; brother, Randy Lee Hill of South Carolina and Kathy Smalley of Cummings, Georgia.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren.

Viewing will begin Friday, August 20, 2010 and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Harjo officiating.

Blanchie Hill

Blanchie "Granny" Hill Wewoka, Oklahoma, died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 in St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa at the age of 85 years.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 at God's Glory Temple in Seminole with Bro. James H. Rider II officiating and assisted by Nadine McBeth. Burial to follow at Abiding Glory (Alexander family) Cemetery, Ragen, Oklahoma.

Born December 22, 1924 in Ragen, Oklahoma to Joseph Guy and Eula (Greenwood) Alexander.

She attended Ragen public schools . In 1954 she and Roy McConnell united in marriage. Blanchie worked for 37 years as a relief operator for Big Yank Co. in Wewoka.

Blanchie was a member of the Chickasaw tribe.

She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph Guy Alexander and Eula Greenwood Alexander, step-father Moses Willson, daughter Patricia Lee Hill Grissom, son Gerald Wesley Hill, sister Angie Wiley.

Survivors include her husband of the home, sisters: Molsie Palmer, Nadine McBeth, and Wanda Chaffin; four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great grand children; and a host of other relative's and friends.

Pallbearers are Scott Hill, Bill Grissom, Jay Hill, Zachary Parker, Harry Claytor, and Chris Parker

Honorary Pallbearers are Winston Hill, Joe Gatewood, Jason Claytor, Gary Don Loving, Tim Gravin, and Billy Grissom.

Robert Hillmon

Robert lee Hillmon, 86, lifelong Seminole County resident, died December 2, 2010 in Oklahoma City where he had currently been living.

Brother Hillmon was the third of six children born to Ernest Hillmon and Marty (Brown) Hillmon, on November 7, 1924, in Jefferson TX.

He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Supt. And Sunday School Teacher.

Hillmon served in the army where he was a mechanic. He served from 1954 to 1956, leaving with an honorable discharge.

Preceding him in death are his parents and wife Christine Marie Ellen Hillmon.

He is survived by daughters, Laura Renee’ Hillmon, OKC, Wilma, Barbara Brown and Pamela Heron, all of Kansas City, MO.; sons Robert Hillmon Jr. Kansas City, MO. and sister Mary Crawford, TX. Also surviving him is 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A service will be held on December 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Wewoka. A burial and Friends Freewill Cemetery, in Cromwell. Rev. Lee Benson, Macedonia Baptist Church, will officiate.

Catharine Hinds

Catharine Julianne "Julie" (Wingard) Hinds, 72 year-old, longtime Seminole area resident died Friday, May 7, 2010 at Unity North Hospital in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

She was born January 12, 1938 in Delphi, Indiana to parents Wilbur Wendell Wingaurd and Helen May (Bingham) Wingaurd.

Julie had lived in the Seminole area most of her life. She married Warren Lee Hinds on March 8, 1957 in Seminole and later moved to Shawnee in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shawnee.

Survivors include one son, Charles "Chuck" Hinds of Lindsay, Texas; three daughters, Carol Haynes of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Debbie Gurley of Wewoka, Oklahoma and Judy Thomas of Garden Grove, California; three brothers, Sherman Wingard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Don Wingard of Snowflake, Arizona and John David Wingard of Pryor, Oklahoma; two sisters, Susan Hickman of Lafayette, Louisiana and Mary Beth Harris of Arizona; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and a host of other family and dear friends.

Julie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Warren Lee Hinds who died on January 15, 1993; two sons, Don Hinds and Larry Hinds and by one granddaughter.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery located north of Seminole.

Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.

Ted Holt

Memorial Services for Seminole resident Ted Alan Holt are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday October 23, 2010 at Emmanuel Fellowship Church Seminole, with Pastor Tim Tate officiating.

Mr. Holt passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010 in Midwest City, OK at the age of 49 years.

Born March 4, 1961 in Modesto, CA. to Jess Leonard and Linda Ruth (Jordan) Holt. He moved to Seminole Oklahoma in December of 2009. Ted graduated from Riverbank High School in Riverbank, California.

Ted married Traci Lea Kilgore July 11, 1981 in Modesto, CA. and to this marriage three sons were born. Ted was a Builder and Welder by trade.

Ted loved to hunt, fish, and enjoyed cooking and loved good food. His number one passion was his family, he loved spending time with them. Ted was also very proud of his membership and leadership role in Alcoholics Anonymous Fellowship group. He is preceded in death by his father Jess Holt and brother Jesse Leonard Holt.

Ted is survived by his mother Linda Holt, wife Traci Lea Holt of the home, sons Ted Alan Holt Jr. and wife Brittanie of Modesto California, Trevor Jacob Holt and wife Amber of Seminole, Tyler Lee Holt and wife Kristyn of Shawnee Brother Randy Holt and wife Rhonda of Seminole, Grandchildren, Landon John Holt, and Makenzi Lynn Holt, Nieces and nephews, Justin, Lindsey, Taylor, Jesse, Jarrod, Austin, Thor, Brittanie, Jeff and Joey, and Jennifer.

Charles Houck

Charles Samuel "Sam" Houck, 63, a loving husband, father and grandfather went to be with his Lord Wednesday, June 16, 2010, after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Funeral Services are set for Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 2 p.m., Swearingen Funeral Chapel in Seminole, OK. An Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Garden in Seminole.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Arthritis Foundation of North Texas, 6080 S. Hulen Ste. 360-222, Fort Worth, TX 76132.

Mr. Houck was born September 24, 1946 in Seminole, OK to Sylvester and Marie Houck. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era.

Sam was married to Donna Gale Hale on May 29, 1970 they moved to Tyler for a while and have lived in Fort Worth for the last 25 years. He was longtime employee of ARCO, Citgo and Explorer Pipelines.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Marie Houck and a brother, Paul Houck.

He was Survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna Hale Houck; sons, Adam Houck, Scott Houck and wife Ashley; brother, David Houck; sisters, Phyllis Casteel and Millie Castle; grandson, Preston Houck.

Ken Houck

Longtime Seminole resident Ken Carlin Houck passed away on February 2, 2010, in Seminole, Oklahoma, at the age of 69.

He was born on August 15, 1940, to Clifford Clinton Houck and Drew Evelyn (Westerman) Houck.

Ken worked for Sloan Drilling as a rig driller where he retired in the early 1980’s.

He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and served in the Oklahoma National Guard.

He married Lavonia June (Lemmings) Houck on March 30, 1983, and she survives him of the home, he is also survived by daughter, Alicia McClanahan and husband Raymond, of Konawa; step-daughters, Cheryl Burns and husband Kelly, of Bowlegs and Jana Gaulph and husband Jammy, of Ohio; three sons, Kenny Houck, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Carl Houck, of Kansas and Joseph Waterman; sister, Margaret Garner, of Maud, Oklahoma.

He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Randy McClanahan, Nick and Brandon Burns, Kimberly, Bryan and Justin Gaulph, Kristen, Lauren and Bryan Houck, and Hollee Ryan. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; brother, Clifford Dewayne Houck; and step-daughter, Julia Deann Waterman. He was loved by many, many people.

A visitation is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Swearingen Funeral Home.

Honorary Bearers will be: Raymond McClanahan, Joseph Waterman, Kelly Burns, Nick Burns, Brandon Burns and Ron Snyder.
