Opal Mittie Smith

Opal M. Smith, age 90, of Oklahoma City, died Wednesday morning, July 17, 2002 at Baptist Hospital after a three-week illness. Survivors include her daughter, Paula McCormick of Memphis, Tennessee; her son, Greg Smith of Laguna Niguel, California; four grandchildren, Mike McCormick, Jr., Michelle Spilger, Shane McCormick and Todd McCormick; as well as 5 great grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.

Opal was born September 30, 1911 in Henryetta, Oklahoma, but lived most of her young life in Bethany. Her father, Jacob Wooden (whom she lovingly called `Papa`), raised Opal along with her brother and two sisters after her mother passed away at a very young age. In the absence of a mother and with Papa working as a carpenter to support the family, Opal assumed the role of family homemaker at a very young age. This caused her to develop firece independence and determination, but at the same time developed a loving and nurturing nature that was evident throughout her life.

On February 13, 1937, Opal married Paul D. Smith of Oklahoma City. After Paula was born, Opal once again found herself in the role of keeping the family together, as her husband Pual went to Europe during World War II. At the end of the war, with the family now reunited, they moved back to Oklahoma, established a laundry business in Anadarko, and later moved back to Oklahoma City where they opened a pharmacy, Paul`s Drug on Northwest 10th Street. Opal worked full-time at American Life Insurance, as well as maintaining the books for her husband`s pharmacy. Opal retired to become a full-time homemaker and to take care of their newly-born son, Greg.

In later years, Opal insisted on maintaining an independent lifestyle and remained in her home, even after experiencing three separate hip fractures over the past 6 years. Opal`s remarkable resilience was evident until the fery end. Her wit, candor and kindness will be greatly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Opal`s name to St. Jude Children`s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105.
