Thomas Burgin

Funeral services for Seminole native Thomas Leonard Burgin were held today at the United Pentecostal Church in Okemah. Rev. David Shatwell officiated. Interment followed at Schoolton Cemetery near Okemah under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home. Burgin died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 in Seminole at the age of 49. He was born Jan. 24, 1953 in Seminole to Francis Thomas and Betty June Burgin. He had been a resident of Seminole since 1988 and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Okemah. Burgin had been employed by Hodges Trucking in Oklahoma City. He attended South East High School in Oklahoma City. He was active in the jail ministry before he had to travel long distances. Burgin was preceded in death by his father, Francis Thomas Burgin. He is survived by his mother; his wife, Mary Lou (Starr) Burgin of Okemah; two sons, Thomas Burgin Jr. of San Diego, Calif., and Terrence Burgin of Lexington, Ky. one stepson, Rodney Starr of Seminole; two sisters, Angila Dibble of Oklahoma City and Melissa Jean Honsinger of Tuskahoma; and three grandchildren. Church members will the active pallbearers.

Floyd Mills

Funeral services for Wewoka native Floyd Eugene Mills were held Saturday at Wayne United Methodist Church. Rev. Joe Davis officiated. Burial followed at Hopping Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home. Mills died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 in Purcell at the age of 70. He was born June 25, 1932 in Wewoka to William C. and Bessie Elizabeth Johnson Mills. He worked in the oil fields for many years and at various other jobs throughout his life. Mills moved to Wayne in the early 1970s and became active in Wayne United Methodist Church, where he played the organ for many years. He was a regular member at the Wayne Senior Citizens Center. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mills is survived by many friends. Pallbearers were Dale Arnold, Darryl Blessum, Jerry Smith, Ted Capps, Bob Fisher, and Reuel Leveridge.

Peggy Maylen

Peggy Lorraine Maylen, of Wewoka, was born Sept. 7, 1942, in Pharoah, and left this earth on Aug. 8, 2002. One of eleven children born to Arthur “Ott” and Imogene (DeArmond) Sallee, Peggy was known for her kind heart and easy smile. On July 2, 1959, Peggy married William Charles Maylen at Hilltop Presbyterian Church in Wewoka. Peggy enjoyed reading, old movies and spending time with her family. None of the Sallee or Maylen family gatherings were complete until Peg poured up her famous “Wewoka Tea”. Over the years she worked as a nurse’s aide at Wewoka Municipal Hospital; a waitress at Morgan’s Mug; and in the cutting room at Big Yank and Custom Size. Most recently she was employed at Elmwood Manor Nursing Home. She is survived by her husband, Charles, of the home; three sons and their wives, Keith and April Maylen, Shawnee, DeWayne and Becky Maylen, Holdenville, and Danny and Valerie Maylen, Wetumka; one daughter, DeAnna Maylen, of the home; three brothers, Kenneth Sallee, Wewoka; Bill Sallee, Waldron, Arkansas, and David Sallee, Holts Summit, Missouri; seven sisters, Shirley Williams and Lucy Sallee, Waldon, Arkansas, JoAnn Dowdy, Stroud, Pat Johnson and Karla Carroll, Drumright, Glenda Condict, Cromwell, and Terry Harrell, Canute. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, one great granddaughter, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ott and Imogene Sallee and one infant son. Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Stout-Phillips Chapel, with Reverend Larry Chesser officiating. Peggy’s nephews will serve as pallbearers and burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Willis Beaty

Funeral services for Willis Eugene “Gene” Beaty are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. President Louis T. Armour is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Beaty died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at his home at the age of 64. He lived in Seminole County for 27 years and in Atwood for six years. He was born Aug. 27, 1937 in Oklahoma City to Willis Francis and Hazel Marie (Beal) Beaty. Beaty married Judith (Morrison) Beaty on Sept. 11, 1959 in LaPunte, Calif. He was a welder and boilermaker. He owned and operated Beaty Brothers Boiler Repair in Oklahoma for 15 years. Beaty also raised cattle and retired about three years from Seminole County District #3. He was a member of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Seminole. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lee Frances Beaty in 1980. Beaty is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Ralph Eugene Beaty of Manassas, Va.; four daughters, Debra June Watson of Maud, Teresa Elaine Carroll of Frisco, Texas, Lisa Marie Holley of Edmond, and Julie Ann Gonzales of Moore; one brother, George Allen Beaty of Midwest City; five sisters, Mary Ruth Manley and Lela Mae Yorba, both of Westminster, Calif., Erma Faye Ginn of St. Louis, Virginia Carol Perry of Hallett, and Delores June Hale of Stanton, Calif.; and 15 grandchildren.

Stanley J. King

Graveside funeral services for Stanley J. King are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Little Cemetery. Chaplain Phil Payne is set to officiate. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. King died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002 at his home at the age of 53. He moved to Seminole in 1995 from California. He was born Jan. 25, 1949 in Prague to Leroy and Thelma Teresa (Young) King. King married Janice Carol (Moore). He was disabled. He was preceded in death by his mother. King is survived by his father of Seminole; his wife of the home; one son, Mark Bailey King of Seminole; one daughter, Sheryl Aires of Mexico; a lifelong friend, "Re-Pete" Petrazack of Arkansas; one brother, Lee King of Jefferson, Ore.; one sister, Evelyn Houser of California; and five grandchildren.

Jack Alexander

Funeral services for Jack Alexander are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at New Covenant Church in Oklahoma City. Rev. Tim Pool and Rev. Carlyle Yates are set to officiate. Burial will follow at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Alexander died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 76. He moved to Oklahoma City 15 years ago from Seminole. He was born Sept. 19, 1925 in Cromwell to Bert and Mary (Wilkins) Alexander. Alexander married Barbara Jean (Maltbie) Rifford on March 22, 1986 in Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Aline Alexander on July 25, 1984. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1982. Alexander served in the Navy during World War II and Korea. He was a member of New Covenant Christian Church, was a 32nd degree Mason, and was a member of the Seminole American Legion. He was also a member of the Young Men’s Club of Oklahoma City and the Surry Hills Golf and Country Club. Alexander was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife. He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Bobby Jack Alexander of Woodward; one stepson, George Rifford III of Olathe, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Davis and Cindy Ross, both of Edmond; one sister, Betty Hefner of Breckenridge, Texas; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Casket bearers are Brad Moon, Gary Smart, Doyle Johnson, Harold Tucker, Leon Barnes, and Keith Wright. Honorary bearers are C.V. Spencer, Mick McKee, Skip Giles, Winston Boydston, Ernie Gallop, Bill Pulley, Wilburn Terrell, Mitch Sexton, Richard Smith, and Bill Brown.

Mary Turner

Funeral services for Mary Wilma Turner, 79, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Stout-Phillips Chapel. Revs. Namiqa A. Shipman and Meredith Robinson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home. Turner died Aug. 5, 2002, in Heritage Village Nursing Home, Holdenville. She was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Searcy County, Ark., to Walter V. Shipman and Leanna Jay Ragland Shipman. She grew up in the Stonewall area, graduating from Stonewall High School in 1941. She attended East Central State College in Ada and was employed by Security State Bank until her retirement in 1990. She was married to Simon L. Bramlett, who died in 1966. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mildred Smelser. She married George S. Turner, Holdenville, on April 5, 1990. He survives her, of the home. Other survivors include one brother, Bill Shipman, Maud; three nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will include Cato Jones, Mark Barnhart, James K. Lively, Fred Smith, Dale Williams and Richard Ellwanger. Honorary pallbearers will include L.D. Tribble, Vic Watts, Merle Belford and Ralph Roush.

Ramona Stewart

Funeral services for Konawa native Ramona Ruth (Pennokee) Stewart are scheduled for 2 p.m Saturday at Bird Creek Indian Baptist Church. A wake service is set for 7 p.m. tonight at the Glorieta Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. The body will be taken to Bird Creek Indian Baptist Church on Friday afternoon to lay in state until service time on Saturday. Burial is to be at the Wilson Family Cemetery under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Stewart died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 at her residence at the age of 45. She was born May 21, 1957 in Ada to Richmond and Virginia (Wolfe) Pennokee. She was a certified medication aide. Stewart was a member of Glorieta Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. She is survived by two daughters, Monica Stewart and Alicia DeLana, both of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Nancy Musser, Susan Cardoza, Belva Pennokee, and Rachel Pennokee, all of Oklahoma City; three brothers, Richard Pennokee, Gary Pennokee, and Nathan Pennokee, all of Oklahoma City; and five grandchildren.

Charles "Leonard" Johnson

Funeral services for Seminole resident Charles "Leonard" Johnson are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Historic Strothers Chapel in Maple Grove Cemetery. The casket will be open until service time and will not be re-opened. Eugene Johnson is set to officiate. Burial is to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Johnson died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 85. He was born Nov. 23, 1917 in Pearce to Samuel G. and Dona (Cowan) Johnson. He married Mildred Virginia Hedges on June 30, 1937 in Seminole. Johnson was a self-employed auto mechanic and was in car sales before retiring in 1995. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force during World War II where he was a sergeant and aircraft mechanic. He graduated from Earlsboro High School in 1935. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted Johnson in 1980 and Wayne Johnson in 1977; and one son, Jerry Johnson in 1995. He is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Larry Johnson of Seminole and Charles Johnson of Earlsboro; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are Kenny Casey, Terry Johnson, Landon Johnson, Kent Johnson, Charles Glen Johnson, and Eugene Johnson. Honorary bearers are Ray McElroy, Jess Coppedge, Andy Andrison, and Ed Courtney.

Donald E. Tolle

CUSHING – Funeral services for former Seminole resident Donald E. Tolle were scheduled for this afternoon in the Memorial Chapel of the Davis Funeral Home. Dale Wells is set to officiate. Burial was to follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park under the direction of Davis Funeral Home. Tolle died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002 at his home in Cushing at the age of 78. He was born April 4, 1924 in Rushville, Ill. to Claude E. and Goldia Tolle. His family then moved to Oklahoma and he was raised and educated in the Seminole area. Tolle entered the United States Navy on Sept. 12, 1941 and served in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. He was a musician and had recently been inducted into the Oklahoma County Music Hall of Fame. He is survived by his longtime companion, Berneice Cook of Cushing; two daughters, Deanne M. Haus of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Leanna M. Cannon of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Bob Tolle of Dallas, Texas and Don B. Schooley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Ruth Woods of Cushing; one brother, Gerald R. Tolle of Boron, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Tolle was preceded in death by one daughter, Claudia D. Davis; and two brothers, Harold M. Tolle and George W. Tolle. The family requests memorials be made to the Judith Harman Hospice.

Mildred Richards

Graveside funeral services for former Wewoka resident Mildred (Jolly) Richards are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Bob Winslow is set to officiate. Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home. Richards died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002 in a Midwest City nursing home at the age of 94. She was born aug. 29, 1908 in Alderson to W.D. and Maude (Wilkins) Jolly. She married Dan W. Richards on April 4, 1926 and they established their home in Wewoka. Richards was preceded in death by her husband on March 20, 1944. She moved to Midwest City in 1950 and worked for Tinker Air force Base until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the Wickline Methodist Church on Midwest City for 50 years. Richards was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and her daughter, Barbara Harriman, who died on Nov. 30. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Turner of Del City; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and eight great-grandchildren.

Estelle Raper

Graveside funeral services for former Konawa resident Estelle Raper are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Vamoosa Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Raper died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at her home in Houston, Texas at the age of 91. She was born July 3, 1911 in Maud to V.V. and Annie (Scroggins) Raper. She was a school teacher in the Rio Granda Valley area at Raymondville, Mercedes, and Kerryville High Schools. Raper was Presbyterian. She was a past member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, American Association of University Women, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She graduated from Horace Mann High School on the campus of East Central Oklahoma Teachers College in Ada in 1928. Raper earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Texas A&I University in 1939 and a Master’s Degree from there in 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Raper. She is survived by one daughter, Natalie Parker Chanslor of Houston, Texas; one son, Charles Loney of Texas City, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation at P.O. Box 1589, Austin, Texas, 78767.

C.C. “Doc” Smith

Mr. Smith was born to Mor- ris M. and Elizabeth (Main) Smith on Jan. 26, 1927 in Tribbey. He departed this life on Nov. 29, 2002 at the Norman Regional Hospital the age of 75 years. Mr. Smith graduated from Tibbey High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon an Honorable Discharge, he enrolled in college at Oklahoma A&M. He attended college for 3 ½ years. On July 5, 1949, he and Eula McKiddy were united in marriage at Gainesville, Texas. They made their home on the same farm that they purchases in 1954 east of Noble. They were married for 48 years before she preceded him in death on April 26, 1998. Mr. Smith was employed with Tinker Air Force Base Civil Service as a Production Engineer for 37 years. He also enjoyed ranching, fishing, camping, knife-making, genealogy, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Noble Church of Christ for over 20 years. Mr. Smith was Past Master of the Noble Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of McAlester, Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Lexington, a past Deacon and Elder of the Noble Church of Christ, past Sunday School teacher, and retired caretaker of the Red Oak Cemetery east of Noble. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eula; two brothers, Lonnie V. Smith and Veachel Ray Smith; and one sister, Patricia Keas. Those who survive him in- clude two sons and their wives, Terry and Cheri Smith of Noble, and Ricci and Pam Smith of Shawnee; one daughter and son-in-law, Conna and Darrell Nemecek of Ada; two brothers, Leslie Smith of Tecumseh and Rep. M. Dale Smith of St. Louis; six grandchildren, Aimee Nemecek, Heather Smith, Shelby and Jordon Smith, Cortney and Jarod Smith; his mother-in-law, Bernice McKiddy of Noble; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Leora ‘Mo’ Nix

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Leora “Mo” Nix were held Friday at First Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Cline is set to officiate. Burial followed at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Leora died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002 at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 69. She was born March 5, 1933 in Elmer to Ray and Annie Lanning. She grew up in Olustee and graduated from high school there. Leora married Doyle Nix on Nov. 17, 1949. She attended Trinity Baptist Church where she taught the nursery class and was involved in the van ministry, W.M.U., and was the prayer coordinator. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Nathan; and one sister, Lola. Leora is survived by her husband, Doyle Nix of the home; her three sons and their wives, Dennis and Loisetta Nix, Terry and Jeanie Nix, and Randy Nix, all of Seminole; her grandchildren, Ryan and Aislinn Nix, Amy Nix, Hous- ton Nix, and Jason Cross, all of Seminole; and three brothers, Steve Lanning of Amarillo, Texas, Cecil Lanning of Midwest City, and Lecil Lanning of Pratt, Kan. Pallbearers are Larry Hays, Jim Parsons, Kenneth Lail, Fred Presley, Stan Walkup, and Wilburn Henry. Honorary pallbearers are Dewey Lee, Tom Gamel, Chuck Anderson, James “Sonny” Williams, Bill Lozier, Jirl McGinnis, and Bill Parsons.
