Raymond Courtney

Funeral services for Seminole resident Raymond M. Courtney, 87, are scheduled for 10 a.m. at Swearingen Funeral chapel with Rev. Larry Chesser conducting the service.

Burial will follow at Cupco Cemetery in Yanush.

Courtney died on Wednesday Aug. 18, 1999 at the Seminole Estates Nursing Home.

He was born on May 27, 1912 in Blackgum, to William and Lilly Mae (Watson) Courtney.

He worked in the oilfield and as a rancher and farmer until retirement.

Courtney was a resident of Seminole county for 65 years.

He was a member of the Methodist church.

Cortney married Florence Mildred Mangum on Sept. 20, 1936. She preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1986.

Courtney was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Survivers inlcude two sons Larry and Steve Courtney of Yukon; two daughters Phyllis Hawkins, Choctaw and Ella Morrison, Seminole; two brothers J.V. Courtney, Baton Rouge, La. and Sam Courtney of Warsaw, Mo.; two sisters Ethel Roberson, Vian and Verlin Murry, San Demas, Calif.; nine grandchildren, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers are listed as Wayne Webster, Raymond Webster, Clint Morrison, Dewayne Werich, Colby Courtney and Craig Webster.

Donna Cox

ELK CITY - Funeral services for former Seminole County resident Donna Kathleen Cox, 68, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Grandview Assembly of God Church.

Rev. Mark Little will officiate at the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service.

Cox died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999 at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 23, 1931 in Quinton to Ruth (Bryant) And George Roberts.

A hairdresser for 35 years, Cox was a member of Grandview Assembly of God Church.

She was married to Robert M. Cox on June 26, 1975 in Norman. They had made their home in Seminole County for a while.

Cox was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; two daughters, Lela Wilkerson, Elk City, and Becky Wright, Duncan; one son, George Lozer, Shawnee; two stepdaughters, Erma Gilbreath, Maurice, La., and Ann Davis, Lake Wood, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Melvin Craig Sr.

Graveside services for Wewoka resident Melvin Ray Craig Sr., 69, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Kellyville Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.

Craig died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999.

He was born May 27, 1929 in Kellyville to Brittain and Alice (Mayhan) Craig.

A Wewoka resident since 1993, Craig was raised in Okmulgee and Sapulpa areas, and moved to Bakersfield, Calif. in the late 1940’s.

A veteran, he served with the US Army during the Korean Campaign.

Craig was employed as a service mechanic for BLACO Corporation for 40 years.

Survivors include his children, Debbie Kaylor, Mary Byrd, Melba Cottrell, Melvin Ray Craig Jr., Allen Craig, Wanda DeShields, and Donna Craig, all of Wewoka; two brothers, Bob Craig, Clayton, and Alfred Craig, Wister; one sister, Essie Smith, Okmulgee; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Jade Cross

Graveside services for Jade Nicole Cross, stillborn daughter of Jason and Lisa (Shelton) Cross, Seminole, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Little Cemetery.

Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate at the service. Burial is under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Survivors include her parents, of the home; Grandparents, Dennis and Loisetta Nix, Seminole, David Cross, Tecumseh, and David and Debbie Shelton, Seminole; and great-grandparents, Doyle and Leora Nix, Seminole, Sylvia Shelton, Wewoka, Leon and Bernice Cross, Bowlegs, and Betty Driver, Seminole.

Jewel Cross

Funeral services for Jewel Desma Cross, 90, mother of a Wewoka resident, are scheduled for 10:030 a.m. Monday at Okemah Church of Christ.

Robert Thompson will officiate at the services. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.

Cross died Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Seminole Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 18, 1908 in Pleasant Oak to Wiley Byrd and Lizzie Romines.

A homemaker, she was a lifelong resident of Okfuskee County.

She married Charlie A. Cross on Feb. 7, 1925. He preceded her in death.

Cross was also preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd Byrd, Bill Byrd, and Robert Byrd; and two sisters, Era Rogers and Edna Morphis.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth L. Cross, Oklahoma City and James D. Cross, Shawnee; five daughters, Helen Harris, Lake Jackson, Texas, Billie Atwood, Los Angeles, Patricia Horn, New Orleans, Glenda Reynolds, Lompoc, Calif., and Edith Loman, Wewoka; 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchil-dren and two great-great-grandchil-dren.

Charlotte Crudup

Funeral services for Seminole native Charlotte Crudup, 90, were held Wednesday morning at John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel in Moore.

Interment followed at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Crudup died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999.

She was born Aug. 7, 1908 in Seminole to Mace and Dora (Morgan) Herndon.

Crudup was a member of the Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association, and had donated over 3,000 hours of service to the Frederick Hospital in Frederick.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Franklin H. Wilder; second husband A.B. Crudup; sisters Venie Goodel and Hazel Eidson; and brothers Mace Herndon Jr., William Herndon and Aubray Herndon.

Survivors include one son, Benny Wilder; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ella Culbertson

Funeral services for Seminole resident Ella Wynema Culbertson, 96, were held Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Rev. Lynn Borrego and Rev. Percy Jerkins officiated at the service. Interment followed at Oakland Cemetery in Warren Pa., under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Culbertson died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999 at Seminole Estates Nursing Center.

She was born April 20, 1903 in St. Joseph, W. Va., to Frank A. Whan and Isabell Zeller.

A homemaker, Culbertson was a member of St. Mark’s, a 50-year member of the Grand Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and Order of the Amaranth.

She was married to John M. Culbertson; he preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1980.

Culbertson was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters, longtime Seminole resident Virginia Parker and Edna Whan on Jan 22, 1997; two nephews, Richard Parker Sr. in February, 1997 and Dennis Parker, on May 16, 1980.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Jo Anne Parker, Mary Bryan, Denise Templeton, all of Seminole, and Richard Parker Jr., Oklahoma City.

Other surviving nieces and nephews include Carl and Dough Eyler, Arizona; and several grand-nieces and –nephews.

Casket bearers were Eric Bryan, Jeremy Bryan, Dickey Bryan, Joe Templeton, James Parker and Richard Parker Jr.

The family has suggested that expressions of sympathy be made to a memorial fund at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 1304, Seminole, Okla., 74868.

Catherine Cummings

Funeral services for Catherine Cummings, 85, mother of a Seminole resident, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at First Indian Baptist Church.

Rev. Gary Hawkins will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Home.

Memorial services are set for tonight at First Indian Baptist Church, with tribal services set for Wednesday evening at the home of Edgar Ellis.

Cummings died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at Semnole Medical Center Hospital.

She was born April 18, 1913 in Schegal to George and Jane Foster. She attended Musson Elementary School, Chilocco Indian Boarding School, Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan., and Bacone College in Muskogee, where she received an associate’s degree.

A homemaker, Cummings was a member of the First Indian Baptist church and had lived in Shawnee since 1970.

She was married to David J. Cummings; he preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1992.

Cummings was also preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include one son, Boyd Cummings, Seminole; children from her husband’s previous marriage, including three sons, Richard Cummings, El Paso, Texas, Ellis Cummings, Oceanside, Calif., and Marcus Cummings, Colonial Heights, Va.; two daughters, Dale Knapp, Richmond, Va., and Ingred Tate, Chester Field, Va.; and several grandchildren.

Joy Cummings

Joy Elaine Phillips Cummings, former co-owner and longtime editor and writer for the Holdenville Daily News, died late Monday in Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness.

Cummings was born Oct. 8, 1928 in Holdenville, the daughter of Tom R. and Aldene Phillips.

Her parents were co-owners of the Holdenville Daily News, and she became co-owner after her father’s death in 1956.

Cummings was educated in Holdenville schools and at Gulf Park College, Gulfport, Miss., from which she received an associated of arts degree, and the University of Oklahoma.

While at OU, she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and a reporter for the Oklahoma Daily.

Cummings served as editor and news writer for the Holdenville Daily News for 25 years, from 1967 to 1992, during which time the newspaper won recognition and awards for excellence.

She trained a number of staff members who went on to further careers in journalism and was well loved and respected as a contributing member of her community.

She was the mother of five children and the grandmother of nine.

Her survivors include daughters, Roxanne and Larry Underhill, Oklahoma City, Stephanie and Rick Soskin, Minneapolis, Minn.; Felicia and Steven Smith, Grand Prairie, Texas and Alison Cummings and Bill DeVille, Minneapolis; one son, Tom M. Cummings, Oklahoma City; grandchildren Stephanie, Matthew and Diane Underhill, Oklahoma City, Marc, Joan and Ellen Soskin, Minneapolis, Julia Smith, Grand Prairie, and Jeffrey and Ryan Cummings, Delray Beach, Fla.

Other survivors include on sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Tom Massey, Midwest City; cousin and wife, Ted and Nancy Phillips, Seminole, two nieces, Lauren Massey, Virginia Beach, Va., and LaDonna Tebbe, Wichita, Kan.; and two nephews, Tom Massey, Panama City, Fla., and Phil Massey, Oklahoma City.
