George Street

Funeral services for Wewoka resident George Street are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Baptist Church of Wewoka. Rev. L. Drinkwater of Redeemed Baptist Church of Oklahoma City will officiate. Burial is to follow at Westwood Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary. Street died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 in Wewoka at the age of 83. He was born April 30, 1918 in Little River Community in Sasakwa to Lester Street and Lucinda Barkus. He worked for Claire Robinson in Wewoka for three years, Scott’s IGA for seven years and did construction work in Battle Creek, Mich. for 16 years. Street was a member of St. Joseph Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Sue Washington. He is survived by seven daughters, Geraldine Levier, Mary Miles, and Joyce A. Williams, all of Wewoka, Mildred A. Street Hill, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cindy Street Porter, Sandra Street, and Mary Brown, all of Oklahoma City; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Chester D. ‘C.D.’ Heffley

Funeral services for Seminole resident Chester D. ‘C.D.’ Heffley are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Wayne Taylor is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Heffley died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 55. He was born July 19, 1946 in Seminole to Rancie Charles and Neater Ethel (Mitchell) Heffley. He moved to Seminole from Shawnee 18 years ago. Heffley retired in 1996 as Customer Engineer from IBM after 32 years. In June 2001, he began working at Eckerds as a computer technician. He was a member of Harley Owners Group (HOG). Heffley was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. He is survived by his friend and companion, Sharon Maloy, of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Danielle Heffley, of Harrah; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Kim Heffley, of Sundown, Texas, Paul and Erica Heffley, of Yukon, and Greg and Molly Owens, of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Cristina, Kayla, John, Rance, Jesse, Tyler, and Sari Heffley, and Emily Owens; four brothers, Luster and Marvin Heffley, both of Maud, Donnie Heffley, of Shawnee, and Robert Heffley, of Tishomingo; and four sisters, Ruvena Vance, of Shawnee, Shirley Coon, of Chickasha, Fern Mayo, of Duncan, and Martha Lewis, of Grandbury, Texas. Casket bearers are Mike White, Javon James, Lerry Cheek, Paul Heffley, Ken Heffley, and Greg Owens. Honorary bearers are David Bryan, Tommy Monks, Wayne Maloy, Ronald Maloy, R.L. Anderson, and Don Britton.

Joyce Thomas

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Joyce Thomas were held Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Wewoka. Rev. Henry Bell officiated. Interment followed at Okemah Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Thomas died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at Shawnee Regional Medical Center at the age of 50. She was born Aug. 22, 1951 to Henry and LaVern (Willoughby) Strawn in Stratford. She was raised and educated in the Okemah area. Thomas married Gary Thomas on May 5, 1973 in Wewoka. She worked in the Seminole County Court Clerk’s office for 13 years. She was elected in 1996 and served her last four years as the Seminole County Court Clerk. Thomas was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in January 2000 and chose not to run another term due to her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, of the home; one daughter, Sara Thomas and one son, Justin Thomas, both of Wewoka; two sisters, her twin sister, Joan Thomas, and Kathy Painter, both of Okemah; and one brother, Tedd Strawn, of Okemah. Pallbearers are Johnny Grimes, Randy Brooks, Billy Conn, Dwight Argo, Paul Herrera, and Raymond Cain.

William ‘Bill’ Griffin

Funeral services for former Cromwell resident William Jackson “Bill” Griffin are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Grant with Rev. Mike Armes officiating. Burial is set to follow at Grant Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard of Ft. Sill. Family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Mt. Olive Funeral Home Chapel in Hugo. Services are under the direction of Mt. Olive Funeral Home of Hugo. Griffin died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 at his home in Grant at the age of 72. He was born May 24, 1929 in Denver, Colo. to Leno and Helen (Foglesong) Griffin. He was a mechanic and joined the United States Army when he was 17. Griffin served during World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired in 1967 after 22 years of service as Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class. He moved to Grant eight years ago. Griffin previously lived in Grand Prarie, Texas, Hugo, and Cromwell. He married Loise Bates on Sept. 23, 2001 in Grant. He attended First Baptist Church in Grant. Griffin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Griffin; and two grandsons, Jory McLoud Griffin and Damon Taylor. He is survived by his wife, of Grant; 12 children, Gerald Lee Griffin, of Gladewater, Texas, John Griffin, of Prague, Janice Harris, of Bogalusa, La., James Griffin, of Patuxent River, Ma., Dina Griffin, of Dallas, Texas, Misty Crowsen, of Wewoka, Barbara Tweddale, of Arlington, Texas, Johnis Knight, of Yucapia, Calif., Edith Turner, of Euless, Texas, Troy Bates, of Denison, Texas, and Rhonda Bates and Loretta Johnson, both of Hugo; one brother, Albert Griffin, of Grant; two sisters, Myrtle Williams, of Grant, and Shirley Hicks, of Colorado; 27 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ruth Nobert

Funeral services for Ruth I. Nobert, the mother of a Maud resident, were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel in Shawnee. Rev. Carl Whitfield was to officiate. Burial was to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of RoeschWalker Funeral Chapel. Nobert died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at a Norman hospital at the age of 74. She was born July 11, 1927 in Aurora, Kans. to Ralph and Grace (Czapanskiy) Walker. She attended high school in Aurora, Kans. Nobert married Francis A. Nobert Sept. 20, 1948 in Greenleaf, Kans. She was a homemaker who moved to Earlsboro in 1958. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Wendell; and one sister, Emma. Nobert is survived by two sons, Ivan Nobert, of McLoud, and Earl Nobert, of Earlsboro; two daughters, Barbara Garlington, of Maud, and Shirley Jarvis, of Tecumseh; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her adopted mother, Doris Walker, of Aurora, Kans.; and one brother, Leland Walker, of Aurora, Kans. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.

Nell Cox

Word has been received of the death of former Wewoka resident Nell (Sawyer) Cox. Cox died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001. She lived in Wewoka for 65 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, worked for the Pioneer Abstract office and Criswell Insurance Company. Cox was a member of the Emblem Club and other garden clubs in California. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pat Cox Cotner. She is survived by two grandsons; and one sister, Florence Plunkett, of Lakeside, Calif. Services were held in California.

Alpha Houck-Douglas

Graveside funeral services for former Seminole resident Alpha Houck-Douglas were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary of Oklahoma City. Rev. M. Russell Herndon, pastor of Bethany First Assembly of God, will officiate. Houck-Douglas died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at the age of 99. She was born Aug. 25, 1902 near Mountain Grove, Mo. She moved to Stratford in 1907 and then to Seminole in 1918. Houck-Douglas married Jasper C. Houck in Seminole in 1923. She lived in Maud from 1926 until 1932 when she moved back to Seminole. She moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1942 where she worked for Consolidated Valtee Aircraft Corporation. Houck-Douglas returned to Seminole after World War II and lived here until her husband’s death in 1957. She then moved to Midwest City and later to Maysville, Ark. after she married Bryce Douglas. She returned to Midwest City after Douglas’ death. Houck-Douglas was preceded in death by her husbands and one granddaughter, Bernice ReNee Houck. She is survived by one sister, Odessa Rozell, of Pauls Valley; one son, J.C. Houck, Jr.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Kim Deffner

Funeral services for Kim Royce Deffner, brother of Seminole resident Anita Hogan, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Victory Christian Center in Agra. Interment will follow in parkland Cemetery in Agra. Deffner died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at the age of 49. He was born to Johnie and Hazel Deffner on Jan. 15, 1952 in Ada. Deffner graduated from Blackwell High School in 1970 and from Oklahoma City University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in education and music. He was a member of Victory Christian Center where he proudly served as a sound technician and as a parking attendant. Deffner belonged to the Mason Lodge #407 of Mustang, and was currently employed by America OnLine. He was preceded in death by his parents. Deffner is survived by his wife, LaDona McQuerry Deffner, of the home; two sons, Michael Thomas Deffner and Daniel Thomas Johnny Deffner; two sisters, Darlene Krivy, Caldwell, Kan., and Anita Hogan, Seminole; one brother, Sandy Pope, Calif.; and one grandchild.

Dollie Walker

Funeral services for Seminole native Dollie Faye Walker were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 at the North Colonial Chapel in Oklahoma City. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City under the direction of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary. Walker died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at the age of 80. She was born to Earl and Oza Melton on July 17, 1921 in Seminole. Walker taught Sunday School for over 30 years, and, in her earlier years, she was known for her dramatic reading presentations in Oklahoma, Texas and Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R.W. Walker; and three brothers. Walker is survived by her daughter, Eloise Gibbes, Oklahoma City; two sisters, Lovell Hankins, Norman, and Ollie Roles, Amarillo, Texas; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Marshall Harjo

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Marshall Harjo are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Arbeka United Methodist Church. Rev. Joe Lowe Jr. is set to officiate. Services are to be led by Rev. David Long, Jr. Wake services are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Stout Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Kelly Tiger is set to officiate the wake services. Interment is to follow at the Arbeka Church Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Harjo died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at the age of 74. He was born Sept. 16, 1927 to Abey and Louisa (Nero) Harjo in Wewoka. He was raised in the Wewoka area and attended Wewoka schools, Euchee Boarding School and Chilocco. Harjo served in World War II in the army of occupation in Germany. He was employed at Robberson Steel Company for 18 years as a welder until his retirement in 1989. He was baptized at the Hilltop Presbyterian Church in Wewoka and transferred his membership to Arbeka United Methodist Church on July 9, 1959. Harjo was a certified lay speaker since the early 1960’s and served as a lay leader at Billy Hooten United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and Arbeka United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Bill Harjo, Amos Harjo, and Mose Harjo. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Harjo, of the home; three daughters, Marcia Jane, of Moore, Elizabeth Ann “Sister” Harjo, of the home, and Sue Wanna, of Lawrence, Kans.; one son, Don Simpson, of Wilson; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers are Steve Simpson, Mark Johnson, Chuck Johnson, Terry Tiger, Ron Frank, and Ray Tainpeah. Honorary pallbearers are Chester Smith, John Harjo, and Walter McGirt.

Mollie Sewell

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Mollie Sewell are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Sand Creek Eufaula Indian Baptist in Wewoka. Rev. Houston Tiger and Rev. Frank Moppin are set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Wake services were scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Stout Funeral Home Chapel. The coffin was then to be taken to the Sewell home where it would remain from 2 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday. Sewell died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at her residence at the age of 80. She was born Dec. 24, 1920 in Wewoka to Willie and Sissie (Cotcha) Powell. She was raised in the Hughes County area. Sewell married George Sewell. She was a lifelong member of Middle Creek #2. In 1961, she moved back to Wewoka where she lived until her death. Sewell is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on July 17, 1958; two sons, Paul Sewell and Willie Sewell; three daughters, Aggie Gibson and Malinda and Harriet Sewell; one grandson, Jimmy Ray Sewell, in 1996; five brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by three sons, Jack Sewell and Thomas Sewell, both of Dallas, Texas, and Newman Sewell, of Tahlequah; four daughters, Velma Martin and Debra Sewell, both of Wewoka, Margie Scott, of Holdenville, Wanda Sewell, of Seminole; one sister, Lula Kaney, of Seminole; 24 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Her grandsons are to serve as pallbearers.

Bertha Bennett

Funeral services for Seminole resident Bertha L. Burris Bennett are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 at the Greater New Zion Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Rev. J.H. Tucker will officiate the services. Interment will follow at the Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Temple and Sons Funeral Directors of Oklahoma City. Bennett died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 51. She was born to Irene and Lorenzo Burris on April 19, 1950 in Seminole. Bennett attended Seminole High School where she graduated in 1969. She married Larry Crawford and one child was born. Later, she was blessed with a son with Jessie Coleman. Later in life, she met and married Robert Bennett. Bennett worked for Chromally for 25 years. She was preceded in death by one brother, Budd Burris; one niece, Deditra Burris; and one nephew, Brian Black. Bennett is survived by her husband, Robert, of the home; her mother, Irene Burris, Seminole; her father, Lorenzo Burris, Oklahoma City; two sons, Michael Burris and Roderick Bennett, both of Midwest City; one daughter, Traveta Williams, Oklahoma City; six brothers, Kenneth Crooms, Norman, Alonzo Burris, Edmond, Michael Burris, Konawa, John Burris, Seminole, Willie Burris, Wichita, Kan., and Wallace Burris, Monmouth, Ill; four sisters, Patsy Colbert, Edmond, Rose Burris, Seminole, Yolanda Black, Dallas, Texas, and Marshall Burris, Seminole; and three granddaughters. Pallbearers are Ivan Manuel, Harold Williams, and John Lofton.
