George Mitchell

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident George Edward Mitchell are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at the Eufaula VFW under the direction of the Kim Cannon-Lee Funeral Home. Mitchell died Aug. 2 at the age of 70. He was born Oct. 14, 1930 in Heavener and Myrtle Mitchell. He attended school in Wewoka and served in the 45th division during the Korean War. Mitchell was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jewell McLaughlin and Marie Redwine. He is survived by three sons, Rick Mitchell, Midwest City, Steve Mitchell, Shawnee, and Gary Mitchell, Rush Springs; three grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Mitchell, Tecumseh, Frank and Ted Mitchell, Santee, Calif.; seven sisters, Dorothy Jennings and Martha Summers, both of Eufaula, Farris Erwin and Kay Bently, both of Longtown, Alice Hipsher, Enid, Mildred Benton, Kingsland, Texas, and Linda Lou Friggle, Manteca, Calif.

Myrtle Stokes

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident Myrtle Minnie Stokes were held today at Liberty Baptist Church with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson presiding. Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. Stokes died Tuesday at her residence in Shawnee. She was born Dec. 23, 1903 near Ada to Jesse and Nannie Wright. She married Richard Stokes Aug. 8, 1922. They lived in Wewoka, Dixie Lease, from 1925 to 1942. Stokes worked for Douglas Aircraft constructing bombers in Midwest City during World War II. She walk also an Avon representative. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Stokes was preceded in death by seven brothers, Clint, Dewey, Robert, Vester, Jess, Clyde and F.L. Wright; and two sisters, Esther Fowler and Lottie Tarver. She is survived by two daughters, Pat Secrest, Oklahoma City, and Lorene McClung, Hominy; one son, Jesse Stokes, Broken Arrow; one sister, Reda Braudrick, San Dimas, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.

Maxey Little

Maxey D. Little, budget analyst with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior and a former employee of the Naval Audit Service, Department of Defense, passed away on July 30, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Maxey D. Little was born on January 30, 1947 to Clarence Bill Little and Lula Harjo in Shawnee. He was raised by his grandmother Mary (Togee) Harjo in the Strother community in Seminole County. Maxey graduated from Strother High School in Seminole in May of 1965. He was a member of the Seminole Hitchitee United Methodist Church. He was an enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, Mekvsukey Band member and belonged to the Sweet Potato Clan. Mr. Little was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in Neu Ulm, West Germany in 1965-66 and later volunteered for service in South Vietnam 1966-67. He served with the 161st Aviation Company, (a full combat helicopter unit), 14th Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade as a radio repair specialist. Maxey was once called upon to repair a radio for General William C. Westmoreland. His citations included the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with two battle stars, Vietnam Service Medal and Valorous Unit Citation. He was the Commander of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan chapter and member of the Vietnam Era Veterans Intra Tribal Association (VEVITA), American Indian Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion. He participated, over the years, at Indian Awareness functions with the VEVITA Color Guard for various government agencies and Powwows, often serving as arena director to include honoring a request from former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. When he returned from the service, he got involved in coaching both men’s and women’s sports and had many successful seasons, including a women’s slow pitch three-time national contender team. One of his favorite past times was writing poetry, of which several have been published. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Tywanna Little, Shirley Little, Freda Little, Elfreda Little; and one brother, Melvin Little. Little is survived by his wife, Naomi Little; his two daughters, Daniella Newton and Minita Little; three grandchildren, Cameron, Jennifer and Justin Newton; four sisters, Losanna Joanna Barker, Chouteau, Etta Potts, Locust Grove, Sharon Little, Locust Grove, Maryann Emarthle, Konawa; seven brothers, Marvin B. Little, Jacksonville, Fla., Stanford Little, Chouteau, Nathan Little, Grand Rapids, Mich., Curtis Little, Seminole, David Little, Wewoka, Russell Little, Oklahoma City, Thomas Little, Seminole, and Mary B. Little-Camp, Wewoka. A wake will be held at Hitchitee Methodist Church at 7 p.m. tonight. The memorial service will be held at Stout Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Thursday. A reception will follow the service at Hitchitee Methodist Church.

Florence Carolina

Funeral services for Seminole resident Florence (Osborne) Carolina are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church. Rev. Fred Morrison will officiate. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Carolina died Thursday at Kindred Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 63. She was born May 6, 1928 in Wetumka to Samuel and Lucser Osborne. She was a certified medical assistant and a member of Lord Community Baptist Church. Carolina was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one son, Anthony Coney, Midwest City; three daughters, Diane Simpson, Dr. Vickie Carter, and Mary Andrews, all of Seminole; 12 grandchildren, Brian Carter, Broc Carter, Bruce Carter, LaKisha Carter, Karla Carter, VaShawnda Carter, Curtis Andrews, Tony Conley, Kevin Andrews, Michael Conley, Kamrin Conley and Kayvon Conley; six great-great grandchildren, Kemarrie, Tierra, Isiah, Jarek, Karlonte, and Ashton; and four brothers, Tom Osborne, Morris, Leroy Osborne, Del City, John Osborne, Spencer, and Chester Osborne, Sasakwa.

Ollie Roberts

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident Ollie Pearl Roberts are scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Stout Funeral Chapel in Wewoka. Rev. Harrell Rodebush will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Roberts died Monday in Midwest City at the age of 69. She was born Aug. 22, 1931 in Bristow to Fred and Pearl Linder. She was raised in the Bristow area and attended Bristow schools. Roberts married Donald J. Linder and they lived in the Sallisaw and Tishomingo areas. She retired in 1980 as a cook with the Tishomingo School system. She then moved to Wewoka where she met and married James L. Roberts. Roberts was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Roberts; and a brother, J. W. Linder. She is survived by one daughter, Anita Goestzche, Okay; one son, David Johnson, Wewoka; one brother, Fred Linder, Connerville; and four grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dewey Muirhead, Dewayne Johnson, Dave Goetzcke, Jon Goetzcke, Tom Morris, Michael Linder, Raymond Ward, and Jason Knight. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Linder and Gurdon Johnson.

Robert ‘Bob’ Mitchell

Graveside funeral services for Robert “Bob” Mitchell, the brother of a Seminole resident, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Burial will be under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Mitchell died Tuesday at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 59. He was born Aug. 24, 1941 in Pauls Valley to Robert, Sr. and Bessie Mitchell. He was a barber and owned Bob’s Style Shop in Midwest City. Mitchell was a member of Crest Baptist Church in Midwest City and was a Pauls Valley High School graduate. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one son, Brian Bobby Mitchell, Weatherford; and three sisters, Veta Young, Seminole, Joyce Driskell, Pauls Valley, and Marlene Moran, Stella.

Maye Stephens

Funeral services for Seminole County resident Ada Maye Gray Stephens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Wewoka. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home in Wewoka. Stephens died Tuesday at the age of 87. She was born on Sept. 9, 1913 to David and Nellie (Belt) Gray in Alma, Ark. Stephens married Leo Stephens in Feb. of 1932 in Wewoka. She was a 40-year member of Rebekah Lodge in Wewoka, and also a member of the Church of Christ. Stephens is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Maxwell, Tecumseh; one son, Leo V. Stephens Jr., Wewoka; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Madeline Harrison-Harjo

Wake services for longtime Wewoka resident Madeline Harrison-Harjo were held last night at Stout Chapel in Wewoka. The procession to Spring Church began today at 4 p.m. and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa with Rev. Dan Factor officiating. Rev. Frank Moppin and Rev. Leon Postoak will assist him. Interment will follow at Harjo family Cemetery in Sasakwa under the directon of Stout Funeral Home. Harrison-Harjo died Monday at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 70. She was born Nov. 9, 1930 to Babe and Josie Harjo in Sasakwa. She was a member of Spring Baptist Church. Harrison-Harjo was a graduate of Haskell Indian School and later graduated from Seminole Junior College. She worked as a teacher’s aide at Wewoka Jr. High during the 1975-1976 school year. She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Vincent and Claudine Gooden; and one brother, Leslie Harjo. She is survived by her children, Roderick Harrison, of the home, Rhoda Harrison, Wewoka, Veta Clarice Larney, Oklahoma City, Clifford Barnett, Ada, Phyllis Gooden, and Laquita Jumper, Clewiston, Fla., Geneva Gooden, Mesa, Ariz., Georgina Hulbutta, Edmond, and Jolene Guitterez, Tulsa; two brothers, Richard Harjo and Winfred Harjo, both of Sasakwa; six sisters, Elizabeth Camp, Wewoka, Anita Lyons, Sasakwa, Betty McGilbert, Shiprock, N. M., Shirley Clayton, Oklahoma City, Jane Porter, Seminole, and Patsy Wolf, Little Rock, Ark. Pallbearers are Sarney Camp, Brian Lyon, Richard Jr. “Buster” Harjo, Gerald “Bolo” Harjo, and Tommy Ray Hulbutta. Honorary pallbearers are Vincent Barnett, Naha Jumper, George Franks, Michael Guitterez and Michael Porter.

The procession to Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa will begin on Wednesday, at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Spring Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Factor officiating. Interment will follow at Harjo Cemetery in Sasakwa under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka. Harrison-Harjo died Monday at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 70.

Guy Qualls

Funeral services for Guy Hoyt Qualls of Holdenville are scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Hudson-Phillips Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Qualls died Saturday in Holdenville at the age of 87. He was born Sept. 16, 1913 to Era and Manley Qualls in Wister. He attended school in Wister until the 8th grade and then moved to Seminole County and attended Butner and Wewoka. On Oct. 9, 1936, Qualls married Levonah Marshall in Wewoka, where he worked as a welder. He was a member of the Welder’s Union and the IAM Machinist Union. He enjoyed creating artwork and competed in art shows across the state. Qualls was a member of the Holdenville Society of Painters and Sculptors. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Buck Qualls. He is survived by his wife, of the home; one son, Ron Qualls, Salinas, Calif.; and two brothers, Benson Qualls, Shawnee, and Earl Qualls, Wildwood, Ga.

Floyd Dean

Funeral services for Floyd Dean, a local church member, were held yesterday in the Kelley Memorial Chapel of Black’s, Shipman & Merritt Funeral Home in Eufaula. Rev. Tim Turner officiated. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Black’s, Shipman & Merritt Funeral Home. Dean died Friday at the age of 92. He was born May 23, 1909 in Gulen, Ark. to Sam and Martha Dean. He married Quessie Franks in Akins on Aug. 13, 1928. She preceded him in death in 1999. Dean worked in the oil field until retiring at the age of 67. He moved to Eufaula in 1987 and attended the Church of Christ in Seminole. He was preceded in death by his wife, four sisters and one brother. Dean is survived by one son, Jack Dean, Eufaula; two daughters, Mary Watson, French Camp, Calif., and Jimmie Carroll, Waurika; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Winona (Carlton) Cravens

Graveside services for Winona (Carlton) Cravens, sister of Seminole resident Juanita Hays, are scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at Holdenville Cemetery, under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home, Holdenville. Cravens died at her home in Holdenville on Thursday at the age of 68. She was born to Virgil and Mary (Sanders) Carlton in Wetumka on March 25, 1933. Cravens was reared in the pecan Grove Community and attended school there. She attended Yeager School through the eleventh grade, and then Fairview High School, graduating in 1950. Cravens was a professional property manager for eight years with Talley Investment Company in Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Carlton and two brothers, Wayne Carlton and Wendel Carlton. Cravens is survived by two sons, Kent Cravens, Bakersfield, Calif. and Gary Cravens, Ovilla, Texas; one sister, Juanita Hays, Seminole; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Parker

Funeral services for Seminole resident Myrtle Elizabeth Parker were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Cromwell. Wallace “Doe” McRay and Dwight Parker officiated. Interment followed at little Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home, Wewoka. Parker died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 92. She was born June 30, 1909, to Carl and Rosa (King) Lasiter in Okfuskee County. She married Sherman Parker on Nov. 24, 1929 in Okfuskee County. Parker was a member of the Church of Christ in Cromwell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, George Lasiter and Alpha Lasiter; and two sisters, Hazel Powers and Helen Clark. Parker is survived by three daughters, Vada Rice, Memphis, Tenn., Joyce Yocham, Seminole, and Winnie Lack, Tulsa; one son, Van Parker, Haskell; two brothers, Orville Lasiter, Manteca, Calif. and Loren Lasiter, Stockton, Calif; two sisters, Maxine Fowler, Medford and Treva Lemmons, Yakima, Wash; fourteen grandchildren; thirtythree great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
