Edwin Williams

The Mass of Christian Burial for Seminole native Edwin Burr Williams is to be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Fitzgerald Funeral Service of Tulsa. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tonight at the Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel in Tulsa. Williams died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 in Tulsa at the age of 66. He was born Dec. 17, 1934 in Seminole to Burr H. and Mildred (Bruhin) Williams. Williams attended Seminole schools, graduating in the class of 1952. Following high school, Williams enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of service, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University where he studies engineering. In 1961, Williams moved to Tulsa and took a job with Powers Electric Company. He later worked with Empire Construction. In 1968, he purchased Tobey’s Night Club which was one of Tulsa’s premier stages to showcase up and coming national music acts. Williams bought the Rosewood Lounge in 1976 and operated it until 1978. He purchased Apartment Movers of Tulsa in 1979 and operated the business until his retirement in 199r. Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey James Williams of Houston, Texas, and David Fitzgerald Williams of Tulsa; three daughters, Mary Suzanne Tiffany Tanner, Shae Lynn Heinrichs, and Sarah Judith Williams, all of Tulsa; one brother, James F. Williams of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one sister, Pat Malone of Elk City; and nine grandchildren.

Billy Dunlap

Funeral services for former Seminole resident Billy Don Dunlap are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Shawnee with Rev. Rudolph Doss officiating. Interment is to be at Earlsboro Cemetery under the direction of Keller Funeral Home of Wewoka. Dunlap died Sunday, May 6, 2001 at University Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 59. He was a resident of Northwest Nursing Center in Oklahoma City at the time of his death. Dunlap was born Aug. 21, 1941 in Seminole County to Jewel Dunlap and Lonada (Brannon) Dunlap. He attended Booker T. Washington and Seminole High School. Dunlap was of the Baptist faith and worked as a self-employed barber and hair stylist. He married Imogene Dunlap in 1974 in Milwaukee, Wis. Dunlap is survived by his wife, Imogene Dunlap of Milwaukee, Wis.; two daughters, Sharnissa D. Parker of Milwaukee, Wis. and Felesha D. Dean of Oklahoma City; two sons, Gary Don Dunlap of Milwaukee, Wis. and Billy Don Dunlap Jr. of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Jewelie Mayzett of Boley, Wanda Phillips of Shawnee, and Sandra Winrow of Earlsboro; two brothers, Mack Easley of Earlsboro and Clayton Armstead of Shawnee; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edwin ‘Ed’ Darr

Funeral services for Seminole resident Edwin L. “Ed” Darr are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Allen Wood officiating. Burial is to be at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Darr died Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at Van Buren, Ark. at the age of 75. He was born on April 2, 1926 in Bon Special, Ark. to Charles William Darr and Lou (Tuggle) Darr. Darr was a military veteran having served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lucille Hopkins on Aug. 18, 1983 in Seminole. Darr was a member of Wolf Free Will Baptist Church and had retired as a custodian with Seminole Public Schools. Darr loved to fish. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Darr, of the home; three sons, Ira Darr of Seminole, Eddie Darr of Ft. Smith, Ark., and Arthur Ritchie of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Gail Harwell of Muldrow and Nancy Lowe of Maud; one brother, Amil Darr of Seminole, one sister, Grace Roberts of Van Buren, Ark.; and several grandchildren.

Kenneth Collier

Graveside services for Seminole County native and Osage resident Kenneth Wayne Collier are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Tate Mountain Cemetery, South of Wewoka, under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville. Collier died at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 58. He was born July 20, 1942 near Wewoka to Florence (Catlett) Collier and C.M. Collier. He was reared in rural Wewoka and attended Jackson schools. Collier owned and operated Hennessey Well Service in Hennessey for several years before moving to Osage. He was preceded in death by his father, Chester Collier, one brother B.J. Collier; and one sister, Nellie White. Collier is survived by two sons, Kent Collier of Hennessey and Brent Collier of Hominy; his mother, Florence Collier of Crescent; one brother, J.C. Collier of Hominy; four sisters, Doris Stafford of Crescent, Vera Epperley of Holdenville, Muriel Davis of Oklahoma City, and Linda Blanton of Mustang; his fiancé, Wanda, of Osage; and one grandson.

Jimmie ‘Jim’ Johnson

Funeral services for Jimmie L. “Jim” Johnson, brother of a Wewoka resident, were held 11 a.m. Monday in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Wynnewood with Rev. Melvin Sanders officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery in Wynnewood under the direction of Bailes-Polk Funeral Home of Duncan. Johnson died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the age of 78. He was born Nov. 16, 1922 in Wynnewood to Cyrus and Catherine (Allen) Johnson. Johnson grew up in Wynnewood and attended Wynnewood schools. He united with the Mount Carmel Baptist Church at a young age. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was in the battles and campaigns in New Guinea and Northern Solomons during World War II. Following his return from the service, he attended Langston University for two years. In 1974, he married Essie Mae Holland. He is survived by his wife, Essie Mae Johnson of Duncan; eight daughters, Cookie Smith of Wynnewood, Jocelyn Rushing of Pauls Valley, Denise Russell of Oklahoma City, Ives Johnson of Oklahoma City, Carla Thompson of Germany, Jenell Cook of Oklahoma City, Chrystal Holland of Duncan, and Louise Chandler of Jackson, S.C.; four sons, Anthony Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., Jimmy Johnson Jr. of Houston, Texas, and Nigel Johnson and Michael Johnson, both of Duncan; two sisters, Jonnie Love of Wynnewood, and Alice cooper of Wewoka; two brothers, Tommie L. Johnson of Wynnewood and Edward Johnson of Palm Beach, Fla.; 35 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Andrew ‘Andy’ Foster

Funeral services for Seminole native Andrew “Andy” Foster were held 2 p.m. Monday at Eisenhour’s Southeast Chapel followed by interment at Resthaven Cemetery. A Wake service was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home. Foster died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the age of 71. He was born in Seminole on Jan. 7, 1930 to Etta Stewart and Aaron Foster. Foster was a graduate of Sequoyah Indian School in Tahlequah. He was a career member of the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 27 years of service. Foster was a member of the Angie Smith United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary. Foster is survived by his wife, Loretta; four sons, Alvin, Kenneth, Darrel, and Adam; two stepsons, Steve Goat and Joe Goat; one stepdaughter, Johnnie Keel; two brothers Henry and Robert; two sisters, Ramona Sam and Millie Ned; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Choate Sr.

Jimmy Dale Choate Sr., a Sasakwa resident, died Sunday, May 6, 2001 at the age of 67. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Stout Funeral Home Chapel in Wewoka with Brother Lee Wayne Fowler officiating. Interment will be at the Choate Family Cemetery in Sasakwa under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Choate was born Sept. 8, 1933 to Bonnie Leroy and Ruby (Mercer) Choate. He was reared and educated in the Bakersfield, Calif. area. Choate was a past member of the Union Local No. 428 ? Heavy Equipment Operators and Engineers. He worked in heavy construction from 1959 until his retirement in 1995. Choate married Dorthy Box on March 22, 1956 in Gallup, N.M. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Tommy, L.C. and Charles. Choate is survived by his wife, Dorthy Choate of the home; four sons, Jimmy Choate Jr. and Gene W. Choate Sr., both of Sasakwa, Gary Choate of Phoenix, Ariz., and Marty George of Sasakwa; three daughters, Judith Holmes of Phoenix, Ariz., Janice Wilt of Buckeye, Ark., and Susanna Greer of Glendale, Ariz.; one sister, Nancy George of Vaga, Texas; five brothers, Joe Choate and Wilfred Choate, both of Sasakwa, Bob Choate of Okemah, A.D. Choate and Verna Choate, both of Sasakwa. Pallbearers include Gene Choate Jr., Joshua Choate, Jimmy Dale Choate III, Mathew Choate, Shane Heard, and Michael Fredrickson. Honorary pallbearers are Shalane Choate, Jacob Pippin, John Choate, Michael Wilt, Danny Holmes, and Keith Holmes; and 16 grandchildren.

Leona Burris

Leona Kathryn Burris, sister of a Seminole resident, died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Chouteau at the age of 68. Funeral services were held 2:30 p.m. today in the Key Funeral Chapel in Chouteau with Rev. Lester Tims officiating. Burial was in the Chouteau Cemetery under the direction of Key Funeral Home of Chouteau. She was born Sept. 8, 1932 in Tulsa to Troxie and Mary (Russell) Hollingshead. Burris grew up and attended school in Tishomingo. She married Callen Burris on Aug. 3, 1946 in Sherman, Texas. Burris was a home health provider. She moved to Chouteau in 199 from Salina. Burris was of Methodist faith and enjoyed growing houseplants. She was preceded in death by one son, Chris; her parents; and two brothers. Burris is survived by four sons, Calvin Burris of Ada, Jackie Burris of Tulsa, Terry Burris of Oklahoma City, and Richey Burris of Ada; two daughters, Ida Sumter and Ruth McDonald, both of Claremore; one sister, Lola Paris of Seminole; special friend, Roy Ervin of Chouteau; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren..

Kristina Davis

Funeral services for Seminole resident Kristina Renea Davis are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tallahassee Presbyterian Church in Seminole with Revs. Jack Vines and Dan Factor officiating. Wake services were held 6 p.m. Monday, May 7,2001, at Stout Funeral Chapel in Wewoka. She will be will be transported to the church at 4 p.m. today for all-night wake services that are scheduled to being at 8 p.m. Davis died Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the age of 26. She was born on Aug. 17, 1974 to Joe Davis and Rita (Hardy) Marks in Lawton. Davis was reared and educated in the Wewoka area. She is survived by her parents Rita Marks of Seminole, and Joe Davis of Ada; three daughters, Rhoda and Hanna Davis, and Shelby Garcia of the home; two sons, Roncho and Alexis Garcia of the home; two sisters, Dujuania Rae Marks and Tarena Tiger; and three brothers, Jeremy H. Marks, Jim Daniels, and Shane Dorsey. Pallbearers include Ray Howard, Victor Mars, Robert Murphy, Paul Tebee, Joey Mars, and Victor Underhill. Interment will be at the Carpitcher Family Cemetery in Wolf under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.

LeRoy Hobbs

LeRoy Hobbs died Monday, May 7, 2001 at his home in Seminole at the age of 62. He was born Dec. 31, 1938 to Charles and Willie (Finch) Hobbs in Gowen. The family moved to Shawnee while Hobbs was a young child. He attended grammar and high school in Shawnee. His father was a locomotive engineer for the Rock Island Railroad His mother was a homemaker and stayed at home with the children. Hobbs was an avid reader and enjoyed working cross word puzzles. He was considered by his family to be one of the best saxophone players anywhere. In the 1960s, Hobbs was a baker for Alvie Hale who owned and operated a bakery. It is said that Hobbs took great pride in his cakes, pie and bread creations. Hobbs was a veteran of military service having served with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents. Hobbs is survived by one sister, Lavada Ailey of Shawnee; and his best friend and partner in life, Beuena Ford, of the home. No services are to be held. Anyone wishing to make donations in his memory may do so by giving to the American Cancer Society and/or local churches of their choice to aid those in need.

Doris McFarrin

Graveside services for Seminole native Doris Marie McFarrin of Borger, Texas are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home McFerrin died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Borger Health Care Center at the age of 81. She was born May 13, 1919 in Seminole and graduated from Seminole High School. She moved to Borger, Texas in 1948. McFerrin worked at Seminole Laundry and the Borger laundry and Borger Nursing Home. She is survived by one son, John E. Petty of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter, Norma Wells of Chicken Creek; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Varnum School Board Member Dies at Age 51

Varnum Board of Education member Earl Hines succumbed to a heart attack at Seminole Medical Center on Wednesday. He was 51 years old. Hines had served nearly nine years on the school board, where he had pushed for new buildings and programs. “Varnum has lost a good friend,” said Superintendent John Cope on Thursday. “He was always a champion of the teachers and had pushed hard for the new building we’re building.” Hines, who was also wellknown in Seminole for the years he umpired at local baseball games, had suffered health problems for the past several years. “His body may have been worn out, but he had tremendous heart,” Cope added. Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, where the honorary casketbearers will include the other members of the Board of Education. Rev. David McDougal and Dr. Kelvin Moseley will officiate; burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Hines was born May 3, 1949, in Seminole County to James Les and Stella Mae (Standerfer) Hines. He served in the US Army through two tours in Vietnam and was also stationed in Korea. He was a staff sergeant with the Fourth Infantry. Hines was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Upon his return to Seminole County, he worked in the oilfield. In addition to serving as an umpire, Hines was past vice-president of the Oklahoma High School Baseball Umpires Association. He married Carol Tigner on May 12, 1969, in Seminole. She survives him, of the home. Other survivors include his mother, Stella Mae Hines of Seminole; one son, Jeffrey D. Hines, Seminole; two brothers, Roy Hines, Seminole, and Robert Ellery Hines, Santa Fe, Texas; one sister, Virginia Patrick Seminole; one sister-in-law, Hilda Hines, Santa Paula, Calif.; his mother- and father-in-law, J.D. and Ione Tigner, Seminole. Hines was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, James and Clarance Hines; and one son, Carlton Hines, who died June 28, 1993. Pallbearers will include Jirl McGinnis, Harold Henley, J.P. “Doc” Duval, Fred Combs, Pat Cassetty and Brent Thomas.
