James Berryman

Funeral services for Shawnee resident, James Dewitt Berryman, were held at 2 p.m. today at North Rock Creek Assembly of God Church, Garrett Lake Road, Shawnee. Brother Thomas Morris officiated.

Interment followed at the Harjo Family Cemetery, east of Little, under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Mr. Berryman passed away Oct. 19, 2002 at his home in Shawnee, following a brief illness at the age of 59 years, surrounded by his family and close friends.

He was born Aug. 7, 1943 in Pontiac, Mich. to Glenn I. Berryman and Veda Ellis Clayton.

He grew up in the Lindsay area, graduating from Lindsay High School in 1961.

Mr. Berryman enlisted in the United States Air Force on March 7, 1963 and served in the Vietnam War from April 16, 1966 to December 15, 1966, and was honorable discharged on Jan. 18, 1967.

He graduated from Seminole Junior College and was employed as a restaurant manager and cook until his retirement due to health.

J.D. and Jo Kay Underwood were married on Nov. 19, 1968 in Del City and lived in the Seminole and Shawnee area.

He is survived by his wife of the home; seven children, Shelly and husband Tim Hall of Oklahoma City, Roberta Haney of Okmulgee, Steve and wife Julie Haney of Shawnee, Andrea and husband T.J. Henderson, Cydney and husband Todd Wood of Edmond, Scotty Berryman and Timothy Berryman of the home, 19 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one step-son, Kelly Lee Haney.

Pallbearers will include the Seminole Chapter Honor Color Guard of the Vietnam EraVeteran’s Intertribal Association.

Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Wood, T.J. Henderson, Scott Berryman, Steve Haney, Tim Hall, Keith Ruminer, Allen Ruminer, Kelly Bell, Russ Haskins, David Thompson, Bob Nauni, and Stanley Beasley.

Janie Bevelhymer

Funeral services for Janie Lynn Bevelhymer are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Wewoka.

Burial is to follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.

Bevelhymer died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 at her home at the age of 51.

She was born Feb. 2, 1950 in Odessa, Texas to L.C. "Pete" and Betty (Burris) Fowler.

She married Jake Bevelhymer on Sept. 28, 1968 in Wewoka.

Bevelhymer attended the Assembly of God.

She is survived by her husband of the home; one daughter, Kelli Davis of Ada; one son, Russell Bevelhymer of Dallas, Texas; her parents of Seminole; and three grandchildren.

LeRoy Bible

Graveside funeral service for LeRoy Bible are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holdenville Cemetery.

Rev. Meredith Robinson is set to officiate.

Burial is under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.

Bible died Monday, July 8, 2002 in Oklahoma City at the age of 81.

He was born Jan. 2, 1921 to Roy and Louella Satterley Bible in Sasakwa.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and a past member of the Lion’s Club and the American Legion.

Bible was a veteran of World War II with the US Army.

He worked as a roughneck in the oilfields and as a contractor with the US Postal Service.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine of the home; two sons, LeRoy Bible Jr. of Bentonville, Ark. and Rusty Boible of Holdenville; three daughters, Susie Hester of Holdenville, Karla Harden of Gerty, and Tanda Baca of Lamar; three brothers, Jack Bible of Wewoka and Wayne Bible and Bill Bible, both of Sasakwa; one sister, Jana Heard of Sasakwa; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Jimmy Bible, Bryan Bible, Jacob Baca, Andy Baca and Darrin Bible.

Roxie Blackshire

Funeral services for Seminole resident Roxie Keesee Blackshire are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Lima.

Rev. W.E. Cooper is set to officiate.

Burial is to follow at Lima Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary.

Blackshire died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 89.

She was born April 9, 1912 in Wetumka to Paul and Randy Keesee.

She retired from First United Methodist Church where she worked for many years.

Blackshire was a member of First Baptist Church of Lima and served in the Missionary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rayford Houston; her parents; four brothers, Henry, Joe, Bozie and Clarence Keesee; and two sisters, Mary Bruner and Lela Mae Harper.

She is survived by one daughter, Mildred Blackshire; one sister, Margretta Douglas of Claborne Texas; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Randal Bonstaff

Funeral services for former Seminole resident Randal "Randy" Bonstaff are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Millet-Guidry Funeral Home in LaPlace, La.

Burial will follow in St. John Memorial Gardens in LaPlace.

Bonstaff, 36, died Thursday morning in St. John Hospital in Tulsa after a short bout with cancer.

He was born Feb. 14, 1966, in Louisiana, to Cheryl Mitchell and Jack Bonstaff.

While living in Seminole, he owned and operated Grasshopper Lawn Service for several years.

He went to work for Gordon Jewelers in Shawnee in August, 1998, and was promoted to manager of the Muskogee store in February, 2001.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Cheryl and JR Mitchell of LaPlace, La.; his father and stepmother, Jack and Cathy Bonstaff of Ponchatrain, La.; four sisters, Rhonda Doeman of Pont, Renee Bonstaff and Rochelle Bonstaff, both of LaPlace. and Jenifer Bonstaff of Bidico; his grandmother Ella Dean Bonstaff; and his best friend, Michael Mooney, Muskogee.

Christine M. Boren

OKLAHOMA CITY – Educator Christine M. Boren, leader of one of Oklahoma’s most prominent families, died in Oklahoma City today at the age of 88 after a struggle with cancer. She was the wife of the late U.S. Congressman Lyle H. Boren; the mother of University of Oklahoma President David Boren, the former Oklahoma Governor and U.S. Senator; and the grandmother of State Representative-elect Dan Boren of Seminole.

Services for Mrs. Boren will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 11, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church at 15th & Robinson in Oklahoma City. Graveside services will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole.

Mrs. Boren was a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in elementary education. At OSU, she was the Pi Beta Phi Homecoming Queen. She taught second grade at the Hominy Public Schools before her marriage to Congressman Lyle H. Boren in December of 1936. The Borens were married in the Methodist parsonage in Stillwater by the well-known blind minister Wilmoore Kendall who had been their minister while they were students.

Mrs. Boren accompanied her husband to Washington as a young bride in 1937 as he began 10 years of service in Congress. She was a new Congressional wife with Lady Bird Johnson; Margaret Chase Smith, who later became a U.S. Senator; and several other national leaders. She was very active in the Congressional Club, a service organization comprised of Congressional spouses.

After her husband completed his service in Congress and returned to Seminole, Christine Boren became active in many civic organizations in Seminole including the PTA, the Seminole Garden Club, Chapter CL of PEO and the First United Methodist Church. She was also active in the Cow Belles, an auxiliary organization of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, of which her husband was one of the three founders.

She made her home in Oklahoma City for the past 30 years where she was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, the Oklahoma City Art League, the 20th Century Club and the Pi Beta Phi Alumni Club of Oklahoma City.

She was also active in the Girl Scouts of America and was named "Mother of the Year" by the Oklahoma Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Boren was actively involved as a volunteer in the political races of her husband, son and grandson. She was proud of her role as a partner with them in public service. She was especially proud of the election of her grandson last Tuesday.

Christine Boren was born in Plattsburg, Missouri, on July 3, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Clifford McKown and Alice Villines McKown. Her father was the postmaster at Maud, Oklahoma, where she grew up. Her grandfather Tom Villines was one of Maud’s founders.

She met her future husband Lyle H. Boren in Ada while she was a high school student at Horace Mann High School which was affiliated with East Central Oklahoma University. Lyle Boren was a student instructor for East Central at the time.

Christine Boren is survived by her daughter Susan Boren Dorman and her husband Mark of Washington, D.C., where Susan Boren is a senior researcher at the Library of Congress; her son David Boren and his wife Molly Shi Boren of Norman; her granddaughter Carrie Christine Boren, a theology student at Oxford University in England; and her grandson State Representative-elect Dan Boren of Seminole.

David Boren said of his mother, "I wish that every child in America could have a mother like mine. She was a constant source of strength, encouragement and love to her family. She was always there when we needed her. She brought out the best in everyone who knew her and reached out in kindness to help those around her."

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Christine Boren Fund at the University of Oklahoma Foundation or to the Lyle H. Boren Guidance Center at St. Gregory’s College in Shawnee.

Jessie Boyd

WEWOKA – Memorial services for Jessie D. Boyd are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Stout Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. Mike Kirby is set to officiate.

Services are under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.

Boyd died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at the age of 80.

He was born Dec. 27, 1921 in Hulbert to Jess and Maude (Martin) Boyd.

He was raised in the Hulbert and Wagoner area and attended school in Hulbert.

He married Joycette (Degg) Boyd on June 18, 1976 in Denton, Texas.

Boyd enlisted in the United States Army on Feb. 14, 1941.

He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict before retiring May 8, 1964 after 23 years of service.

He later moved from Del City to Wewoka in 1977.

Boyd is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Madeline Willis and Carmen Seratt; and three brothers, Jack, Joe, and John Boyd.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two sisters, Ophelia Peters of Tulsa and Cloie Rhodes of Sacramento, Calif.; four daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are the V.F.W. post #1311.

Jessie D. Boyd
