Helen Cousins Exum

Memorial Set for Last Member of Douglass’ Graduating Class of ‘28

The last surviving member of the Douglass High School Class of 1928 has died in Frankfort, Ky.

Helen Cousins Exum died Nov. 29, 2003, at her home in Frankfort.

A memorial service is planned this weekend during the Douglass High School Alumni Reunion and business meeting, 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wewoka Civic Center.

All alumni who have died in the past year will also be honored.

Douglass was Wewoka’s first high school for African-American students.

Exum was a senior the year the school opened and was a member of the first graduating class.

She had been born in Lima, to Rev. Henry and Mame Howell Cousins.

Her early years were spent in Wewoka and Lima, where she attended public school.

She attended college at Talladega. She accepted her first teaching position at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla.

There she met and married her husband, William Henry Exum; both her husband and son, Henry, preceded her in death.

Exum completed a master’s degree in language at the University of Michigan and spent her life "moving around" with her husband as her pursued a career as a coach, athletic director and member of many national and international committees.

Exum found herself back in Wewoka during World War II, while her husband served in the military.

When he returned, they lived at Jefferson City, Mo., where he coached at Lincoln University, then went to Kentucky State in 1950.

She began teaching language classes at that time and accompanied her husband on vacations and Olympic trips.

She studied for a summer in France and brought the joy of speaking French to her students.

She was an active member of Beta Upsilon Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and was recognized as a "Diamond Soror" for her 75 years of service.

She was also a charter member of the College Park Church, the Believers Club, a stewardess and faithful member of the History Committee.

She was a member of the Third Thursday Quintet.

Survivors include her grandson, Zachary Exum of Sunderland, Mass.; the daughter-in-law she considered a daughter, Patricia Crutchfield, Southwich, Mass., and many other friends.

"The Douglass High School Alumni Association of Wewoka mourns the passing of the last member of the first graduating class, " said Wayne L. Chandler Sr., who was a freshman that first year Douglass opened.

Chandler recalled how Wewoka’s first African American school came to be.

Prior to Douglass’ opening, the only black high school in Seminole County was in Lima.

William Frazier had been principal of Douglass Junior High in Wewoka; when he resigned, D.W. Lee was hired and began a movement to get a high school open.

He and a number of leaders met with the school board and they agreed that if they could get most of the eighth grade graduates to remain.

When most of the eighth graders agreed to stay, Douglass High School was established.

"The education leaders in Wewoka had planned to make Douglass High School the largest consolidated school in Oklahoma, " Chandler remembered.

"Just about this time, C.R. Johns came to Seminole and wanted to have a high school there."

When Lima school was closed and students began attending in Wewoka.

Chandler said he called Exum in mid 2003 to ask her to come to the 2004 alumni reunion.

"She told me of the many problems she would encounter if she came and I assured her that the problems would be eliminated in Wewoka, " Chandler said.

"We ended the conversation with my thinking that more than likely the last living graduate of the first graduating class of 1928 would be with us."
