Vernon Newton Armstrong, Jr.

Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident Vernon Newton Armstrong, Jr. are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Revs. Allen Wood and Bill Adcock are set to officiate.

Interment will follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Swearing Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday.

Armstrong died Monday, Sept. 19, at his home. He was 62.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1943, in Pawhuska to Vernon Newton Armstrong, Sr. and Opal Faye (Sumpter) Armstrong.

On April 2, 1965, Armstrong married Diana Kay Johnson in Midland, Texas.

Armstrong, a veteran of the Air Force who received an honorable discharge, retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 2001, where he was a Supervisor Aircraft Mechanic. He was also a dairy farmer.

He was a former Varnum School Board Member and a member of the OETRA for over 25 years. He graduated from Varnum High School in 1961.

Armstrong attended Liberty Baptist Church in Shawnee.

Armstrong’s infant sister Carolyn, and his father Vernon Armstrong, Sr., preceded him in death.

He is survived by his mother, Opal Armstrong of Seminole; his wife, Diana Kay Johnson Armstrong of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Angela Armstrong of Seminole, and David and Christy Armstrong of Seminole; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and William Adcock of Seminole; one brother and sister-in-law, T. Jack and Marilynn Armstrong of Poteau; one sister and brother-in-law, Jan and Perry Garrett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and seven grandchildren, Heather Adcock, Megan Adcock, Billy Adcock, Wyatt Armstrong, Luke Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong, and Joshua Armstrong.

Armstrong is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Pallbearers are Froman Cowan, Larry Vulgamore, Bert Gill, Ted Hurt, Ray Taylor and Joe Ragland. Honorary Bearers are Raymond Yott, Kenneth Harbeston, J.P. Duvall and Jirl McGinnis.

Susan Bacon

Funeral services for Maud resident Susan Jane "Sue" (Calvert) Bacon are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Maud.

Rev. Carl Whitfield and Rev. Jim Kirkendall are to officiate.

Interment will follow service at Cummings Cemetery under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.

Bacon, 55, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005 at Midwest City Regional Hospital. She was born Sept. 19, 1949 in Oklahoma City to Thomas V. Calvert and Pauline (Southern) Calvert.

She moved from the Choctaw/Newalla area in 1990 to reside in the Shawnee and Maud areas.

Bacon retired in 1998 from Gonzales Engineering where she was an engineer. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving is her son Brian Bacon, a United States Marine stationed in Jacksonville, N.C.; two daughters, Lisa Hand of Seminole and Brandi Cox of Tecumseh; one brother, Tommy Calvert of Maud and six grandchildren.

Nora Marie Bada

Graveside service for Seminole resident Nora Marie Bada was held at 3 p.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery with Chaplain Donnie Knight officiating. Swearingen Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Bada died at her home Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005. She was 85.

A longtime Seminole County resident, Bada was born in Wetumka on Oct. 23, 1919, to Oscar Sanders and Myrtle May (Dover).

Her husband, Lewis Bada preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1996.

Bada worked at Seminole Hospital and Seminole Nursing Home as a cook retiring in 1972. She was also a homemaker.

She was a member of the Harvey Road Baptist Church.

Bada was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lewis Bada, one brother, one sister, one great-grandson and one son.

She is survived by two sons, Don Chapman of Stephenville, Texas, and Darrell J. Chapman of Arizona; one daughter, Sally Wilkerson, of Seminole; one stepdaughter, Janet Gearhardt of Arkansas City, Kan.; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Charleen Bader

Graveside services for former Konawa resident Charleen Bader are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Bader, 70, of Oakridge Nursing Home died Friday, March 18, 2005. She was born Nov. 24, 1924 in Cement Falls, Ore to John Elmer Bader and Julia Bernice (Vineyard) Bader.

She was a former resident of New Horizon Home of Konawa and was of the Methodist faith.

Roy John Banks

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident Roy John Banks are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Yale. Bro. Mike Dershem is set to officiate.

Graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Cemetery in Little with Rev. Steve Lopp officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer and Marler Funeral Chapel in Yale.

Banks died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Cushing Regional Hospital. He was 101 years old.

He was born Aug. 29, 1903, in Goewn to Albert and Emma (Slaven) Banks.

Banks married Ida Rae Stillwell on April 27, 1927, in Wewoka.

In 1943, he was baptized at the Highway Baptist Church.

Banks raised his son and also helped raise his nephews, Charles and Jim Woods.

He moved to Yale in 1956.

Banks was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he was head of the Men’s Brotherhood Group, taught Sunday school for over 50 years and served as past Trustee.

He came to be known as the "Candy Man" and church "Grandpa" to many children as he used to pass out suckers at the door of the church.

Banks worked as a foreman for Mobil Oil Co. and retired in 1967. He was their oldest living retiree.

In 1954, he traveled to Philadelphia to help organize the Magnolia/Mobil Oilfield Union.

Banks was past president of the Lions Club. He was a member of the American Fishing Association and Woodsman Association.

Banks was proud of his Choctaw Heritage.

He went hunting and fishing. He made sweet pickles and pear relish and was known to share what he made.

At the age of 100, he visited the dedication service at the Highway Baptist Church.

Banks often laughed at and told jokes.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ida Banks in 1997, daughter, Barbara Ann Banks, one brother and three sisters.

Banks is survived by his son, Roy Banks Jr. of Andrews, Texas; sister, Elizabeth Stricker of Duncan; one grandson and one great-grandson.

Memorial constibutions may be made to the Youth Department at the First Baptist Church in Yale in Banks’ name.

Shelby Barber Jr.

Graveside services for Shelby Leon Barber, Jr. are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Tiger Family Cemetery, located one mile east of Seminole on SH 9.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Barber died Tuesday Dec. 13, 2005 in Wichita Falls, Texas at the age of 57. He was born on Dec. 8, 1948 to Selby Leon Barber, Sr. and Vera Eirleen White in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He was a tech engineer for Solid State Exchange and Repair Company. He was a member of the Grace Temple Church in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Barber married Wanda C. Tiger on Feb.24, 1968 in Wichita Falls, Texas and they were married 18 years.

His parents and one sister, Donna Kathleen Barber-Pinson preceded him in death.

Surviving is his ex-wife, Wanda C. Tiger-Barber of Maud; one daughter, Kimberly Sharp of Ada; two sons, Shelby L. Barber III and Nathan Barber, both of Seminole; two brothers, Bobby Eugene Barber and Moses Ray Barber of Denton, Texas and 12 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Barber, Shelby Barber III, Bobby Barber, Ray Barber, Vernon Pinson Jr., and Mitchell Barber.

Flora Barkus

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Flora Barkus are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church. Rev. Michael Brooks of Praise Baptist Church is set to officiate.

Interment is set to follow at Thomastown Cemetery in Sasakwa. Arrangements are being handled by Myers Mortuary.

Barkus died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Wewoka at the age of 91.

She was born Feb. 4, 1913, in Sasakwa to Carolina Cudjo and Julie (Grayson) and lived her entire life in Seminole County.

Barkus was a member of the Thomastown Baptist Church and continued to attend until her health began to fail.

She worked at Oakridge Nursing Home for at least two years.

Barkus was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, four sisters, two daughters and one son.

She is survived by one brother, John Barkus of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Bill Barnett

There are no services planned at this time for Seminole resident Bill "Pete" Barnett.

Barnett, 79, died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole. He was born July 11, 1926 in Broken Bow to Glen G. and Daisy M. (Herren) Barnett.

He married Clara B. Barnett and worked as a television repairman in California before moving to Seminole several years ago.

Barnett was a member of the Church of Christ.

His parents, wife Clara (June 19, 2000) and one sister, Tollie Zitterkopf preceded him in death.

Surviving is one sister, Kathryn Collings of Seminole.
