James Simpkins

Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident James Donald Simpkins are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. Don Jones will officiate and interment is to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Simpkins, 61, of Paden, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005 in Maud. He was born Nov. 14, 1944 in Ada to Elbert Nathan Simpkins and Ruby Meyers.

He worked as a mechanic at Wrangler since 1963, retiring in 2001. Simpkins was a member of the Morris Memorial Baptist Church in Ada.

Simpkins was a veteran who served in the United States Air Force.

His father preceded him in death.

Surviving is his mother, Ruby Gregory of Seminole; two sons, Jeter James Simpkins of Shawnee and Travis Kyle Simpkins of Dallas, Texas and sister Ruberta Scoggins of Maud.

Oather Daniel Simpson

Oather Daniel Simpson, born Oct. 18, 1944, passed away on Aug. 3, 2005, at his home in Wewoka. In his final moments, he was surrounded by his loving family.

Dan was born in Coalgate to Lottie Faye and Oather Lee Simpson. He grew up in Cottonwood prior to moving to Florence, Ore., at the age of 14.

Following graduation from Siusalaw High School in Florence, Ore., Dan attended the university of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Following his attendance at the University of Michigan, Dan spent several years working as an iron worker for the American Bridge Company.

Dan met Allison, the love of his life, in 1976 in Tillamook, Ore. They married later that year. Shortly after they married Dan and Allison moved to Wewoka in order to be closer to his family.

In 1978, they founded Dan’s Pawn Shop. After several years in the pawn business, Dan pursued bail bonding as well.

Along with owning a successful business, Dan and Allison raised three daughters.

Dan was an avid collector of Native American artwork and had a lifelong love of Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Dan enjoyed gardening and spending time throwing Frisbees to his Dalmatian, Abbie.

Dan is survived by his wife Allison Simpson of the home. He is also survived by his three daughters, Danielle Patterson and her husband Trent of Wewoka, Traci Loftis and her husband Chris of Dallas, Texas, and Samantha Young of Juneau, Ala.

Other survivors include five grandchildren, Maycen Young, Mia Loftis, and Trenton, Triston, and Treyton Patterson; his four sisters, Wanda Morgan of Guthrie, Sue Vail of Hoyt, Betty Scott of Eugene, Ore., and Mary Ireland of Florence, Ore.

Dan’s survivors also include a number of dear nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Lottie Faye and Oather Lee Simpson.

Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. A graveside ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at Jessie Cemetery in Stonewall.

Harold Smart

Harold Smart age 87 a long time Wewoka resident passed at the Wewoka Nursing Center on July 22, 2005. Harold was born March 4, 1918 to Emitt and Nettie Wever Smart at Fax Oklahoma.

He lived in Seminole County most of his life attending school in the Ong and Cromwell communities. In 1938, he married Melreta King in a double wedding with his brother Houston and Juanita Treet.

Born to this union were two sons, Clayton Smart and Dale Smart. During WWII, he worked in the shipyards in Oakland, Calif. He returned to Seminole County in 1946 to work for the Oklahoma Highway Dept. He was foreman on I-40 north of Seminole, retiring with thirty-five years of service in 1981.

He is preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers, Haywood, Hollie, Carl, Houston, R.E., Jearl, R.L.; one sister, Ona Gravitt; one grandson, Clayton Smart II; one infant granddaughter Cayla Ranee.

Surviving him is his wife Melreta of the home; two sons, Clayton and wife Nancy of Okmulgee, and Dale and Bonnie of Okemah; four grandchildren, Dane of Shawnee, Ryan of Okemah, Chris of Bixby and Carol of Germany.

Also, 10 great-grandchild-ren; one sister, Irene Hanson of Duncan; one brother Emit Smart of Wewoka and several cousins.

He was a member of the Mission Home Baptist Church in Wewoka for 28 years.

Services will be held at the Mission Home Baptist Church on Monday at 10:30 a.m. July 25, 2005. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka.

Jo Smart

With her family at her side, Jo Smart died peacefully on July 12, 2005.

Her enthusiasm for life and joy in living each day remained with her even during the past few months as she succumbed to cancer.

Jo was born May 25, 1927, to Vivian and Grady Nelms in Wewoka.

She married Jearl Smart in 1949 and remained in Wewoka to raise four children.

A graduate of Wewoka High School, she attended college until her marriage, and returned to receive a bachelor degree from the University of Oklahoma at the age of 59.

Jo is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jearl Smart, and sister, Billye Sharp.

She is survived by Jeary Seikel and husband, Mike, of Oklahoma City; John Smart and wife, Teresa of Wewoka; Jim Smart and Vicki Radar of Wewoka; Julie Tibbs and husband, Brian, of Oklahoma City.

She leaves behind eight adorning grandchildren; Emily and Matt Seikel, Jennifer, Jamie, Jill and Jack Smart, Claire and Bonnie Tibbs.

A community of friends also mourns her death.

Jo was an avid supporter of Wewoka and Seminole County as well as a devoted community servant and enthusiastic club member.

She served as board member to the Wewoka Library, Seminole Nation Museum, Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum, Oklahoma Heritage Association and Seminole State College.

Jo was a founding member of the Carnation Garden Club in 1954, and held various offices in PEO, DAR and Athenaeum.

She was a lifetime member and Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church, a graduate of Mastering Gardening and special initiate of Chi Omega sorority.

She leaves behind close friends in the Second Monday Bridge Club, Wewoka Arts and Crafts Club, Cookie Club and Red Hat Society.

She will be missed by her theater loving friends who regularly attended the ballet, the symphony, plays and movies with her.

Jo received the Wewoka Chamber of Commerce’s Distinguished Service Award 2004 and was the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Alumni of Wewoka High School.

Jo chaired the Jo and Jearl Smart charitable foundation for the past 10 years and gave numerous educational scholarships and grants of support to organizations in Seminole County and throughout the state of Oklahoma.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seminole Nation Museum, 524 S. Wewoka, Wewoka, Okla., 74884, or The Wewoka Public Library, 118 W. 5th St. Wewoka, Okla. 74884.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Wewoka at 2 p.m. Friday with burial following at Oak Wood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Stout Funearl Home prior to the service.

Dorothy Smedley

A memorial service is scheduled for longtime Maud resident Dorothy Catherine (Benson) Smedley, at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Maud.

The services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.

Smedley, 73, of Noble, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Norman Regional Hospital. She was born May 10, 1931 in Maud to James Leonard and Carrie (Felder) Benson.

She was a graduate of Maud High School and had moved to Noble from Maud 10 years ago. Smedley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maud.

On March 11, 1960 she married Edward Smedley in Arkansas. She was a homemaker.

Her parents, husband (1992), one daughter Patsy Clark (1992) and three brothers preceded her in death.

Surviving her is her son David Smedley of Warr Acres; one brother, Robert Benson of Atoka; one sister, Johnnie McElvaney of San Antonio, Texas and three grandchildren.

Darla Jean Smith

Funeral services for Seminole resident Darla Jean (Seal) Smith are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. Deanne Mowry is to officiate. Visitation is scheduled from 12 noon until 8 p.m. Sunday and the family will be at Swearingen Funeral Home to receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m.

Interment is to follow services at Resthaven Memorial Park in Oklahoma City under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Smith, 68, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005 at Seminole Estates Care Center. She was born Sept. 1, 1937 in Bartlesville to Robert Molee Seal and Ruth Elizabeth (Settell) Seal-Garr.

She attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee as a music major.

Darla was a very gifted piano player who loved playing and even after becoming disabled she would play for the Care Center residents.

She was affiliated with the Church of God.

Surviving is her former husband and the father of their daughter, Jerry Smith of Acworth, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Saundra Jean and Jeffrey Henson of Acworth, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Lisa Seal of Tallahassee, Fla. and sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Bill Hooten of Seminole.

In addition, two granddaughters, Leisha Michelle and her husband Bradley Fontaine Smith and Codi Nicole Henson, both of Acworth, Ga. and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends survive her.

Darla is also survived by the entire Staff and Administration of Seminole Estates Care Center, who not only gave of themselves Love and Care; they gave the Ultimate Blessing of Human Kindness.

Justin Smith Jr.

Graveside services for the infant son of Justin Dewayne Smith of Seminole and Aubrey Ann Cavett of McLoud are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.

Rev. David Long will officiate the services, which are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home in Shawnee.

Justin Dewayne Smith Jr. was born and died Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Unity Health Center in Shawnee.

He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Debbie Morris of McLoud, Jeff and Marla Cavett of Guthrie and Randy and Rhonda Holt of Seminole; great-grandparents, Carl Morris, Larry and Jeanne Spoonmore and Linda Holt, all of Seminole and Jess Holt of Modesto, Calif.

In addition, surviving are his great-great grandparents Sis Dodd and Clydine Springer, both of Seminole and six aunts, Stephanie Stiffler and Ashley Cavett, both of Independence, Kan., Jennifer Holt, Lindsey Holt and Taylor Holt, all of Seminole.

Leroy Smith

Funeral services for the father of Wewoka resident Marilyn Kincade, Leroy Smith of Lamar, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Hudson-Phillips Chapel in Holdenville with James Branscum to officiate.

Interment will follow the service at Lamar Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.

Smith, 90, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005 in Holdenville. He was born May 5, 1915 in Van Buren, Ark. to Monroe Jesse Smith and Winnie Rose (Cullum) Smith.

He was raised in the Van Buren area and moved to Pecan Grove, north of Holdenville, as a teenager.

In 1935 Leroy moved to Lamar where he spent the remainder of his life. He played professional baseball from 1935 until 1936, where he was paid $1 per day to play.

He married Sylvia Mae Goodson on June 4, 1939 in Horntown and the couple began a lifetime of ranching and farming.

Smith was a member of the Church of Christ in Lamar and enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing carpentry.

His parents; brothers Jack, Bun, Leon, William, Robert, Bill and Lee; two brothers-in-law, Sam Aldridge and Bill Foster; and great-grandchildren Raelynn Smith, Russell Lee Smith and Sawyer Levi Smith all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of the home; two sisters, Mary Aldridge and Shirley Foster, both of Minneola, Texas; sons, Donald Smith of Henryetta and Douglas Smith of Texas; daughters, Connie Bennett of Ada and Marilyn Kincade of Wewoka; three granddaughters; five grandsons; 10 great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Brain and Lynn Smith, Keith, Kevin and Kerry Kincade, Brandi Adams, Michelle West and Kathy Bailey.

Honorary bearers are Dick Low, Orville McKenzie, John Freeman, Lonnie Arthur, Donnie Smith, Howard Upchurch, Joel Freeman and Bill Pack.
