Patricia Stephenson
April 2, 2003
Patricia Neiley Stephenson, 69, widow of Kenneth D. "Denny" Stephenson and well-known Towanda resident of 7 Mix Ave., died early Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003.
Patricia was visiting the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and John Hulslander in West Burlington when a fire consumed the residents, claiming the lives of Patricia, Marjorie and John.
Born April 13, 1933 in Sayre, she was a daughter of the late R. Alfred Neiley and Catherine Brennan Neiley. Patricia was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1951 and was a former Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen candidate, representing Towanda.
On June 21, 1952, Patricia married Kenneth D. Stephenson at Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years on March 16, 2002.
In early years, Patricia was employed by the A&P Market in Towanda. She was later employed by the District Magistrate’s office in Towanda by Magistrates James Cox and James Powell for many years until her retirement. Patricia was a member of the Towanda Area Senior Citizens and enjoyed volunteer work for the Towanda Elks Lodge. She loved to care for her home and family, cooking, antiques and walking.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph K. and Candy Stephenson of Towanda and Jack W. Stephenson and Deanna Bogaczyk of Towanda; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Sandra Stephenson of Towanda; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Stephenson of Towanda and Kay Stephenson of Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family received friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
The funeral was held on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Main St., Towanda, with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.

Fawn McCarty
April 8, 2003
Miss Fawn Amber McCarty, age 17, of Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital following an automobile accident.
Fawn was born in Towanda, on March 25, 1986. She was a very active member of the Junior Class at the Sullivan County High School. She was the boys’ soccer manager and a cheerleader for the boys’ basketball team. She was also a member of the prom committee.
Surviving are her parents, Vikki Bodnar of Dushore and Michael Bodnar of Wyalusing; her sister, Fallon M. Bodnar, at home; maternal grandparents, Roger and Carol Samuels, Forksville, and Roger Gurka of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; paternal grandmother, Betty Bodnar, Wyalusing; great-grandmothers, Elizabeth Gurka, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and LaRue Samuels, of Breinigsville; an aunt, Melissa Gurka of Berrien Springs, MI and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor, presiding.
Friends may call at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.
Memorials may be directed to the Sullivan County Scholarship Association, PO Box 277, Laporte, PA 18626.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA.

Marjorie Hulslander
John Hulslander
April 2, 2003
Marjorie Neiley Hulslander, 65, and John Edgar Hulslander, 69, well-known residents of West Burlington, Troy RR3, died early Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003 when a fire consumed their home.
Marjorie and John are survived by their children, Thomas Hulslander and his wife, Linda Hulslander of Tunkhannock, Cindy Hulslander Loss and her husband, Steve Loss of Nicholson RR2 and Timothy Hulslander of Towanda RR3; their grandchildren, Kevin, John Thomas, Shane, Ashley, Erin, Mike and Conner.
Marjorie was born March 8, 1938 in Sayre, a daughter of the late R. Alfred Neiley and Catherine Brennan Neiley. She was a graduate of the Towanda High School, class of 1956 and was a former Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen candidate, representing Towanda.
On June 14, 1957, she married John Edgar Hulslander at Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda.
In early years, Marjorie was employed as a secretary for the GLF in Towanda. She later was employed by the Valley Stock Yards in Athens and served as tax collector for West Burlington Township for 16 years. Marjorie also served as Bradford County Auditor for many years until her retirement.
She was an active member and past president of the Bradford County Republican Women and was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State Republican Women. Marjorie was a member of the Troy Fire Department Auxiliary Station No. 2 and worked as a volunteer for the Towanda Elks Lodge.
She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and friends and traveling. Marjorie provided loving care for her father-in-law, Alfred A. Hulslander, for many years.
Marjorie is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; a sister-in-law, Edith Hulslander of Lakeland, FL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was born on May 6, 1933 in Burlington, a son of the late Alfred A. and Esther Weed Hulslander.
John was a graduate of Troy High School, Class of 1951.
John worked on the Hulslander family farm his entire life and also served as West Burlington Township Supervisor for many years. He was a member of the Troy Fire Department and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 2191, Towanda and a former director of the Troy Agway.
John loved sports, especially softball, as in earlier years, he played on two softball teams. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Penn State fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and friends, hunting, the outdoors and animals.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, John is survived by his sister, Edith Hulslander of Lakeland, FL; a brother-in-law, Richard Morrell of Pine City, NY; a sister-in-law, Anna Mary Hulslander of Columbia Cross Roads; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hulslander and Alfred W. Hulslander, Jr. and two sisters, Frances Morrell and Adelaide Pierce.
The family received friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 held a memorial service at 6:45 on Friday evening.
The funeral and committal services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Main St., Towanda, with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, a nephew of John and Marjorie, officiating. Interment was private in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
Friends who desire, may direct memorial contributions in memory of Marjorie to the Troy Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary Station No. 2 in care of Lori Tice, RR1, Granville Summit, PA 16926.

Dale Hetherington
April 8, 2003
Mr. Dale R. Hetherington, age 50, of RR3, Box 3679 Sandor Rd., Laceyville, PA passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon, April 8, 2003 after an illness. He was formerly of Port Richey, FL.
He was born in Philadelphia on Oct. 8, 1952, a son of Marion Buller Hetherington of Laceyville and the late H. Dale Hetherington. While growing up in Philadelphia, he was a member of the graduating class of 1970 from the West Catholic High School for Boys.
While living in the Laceyville area, he was employed at Procter & Gamble Paper Plant in Mehoopany in their logistics department and also in their training department.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Rought Hall Post #510, Black Walnut. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, hiking and spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Coleen E. Green Hetherington of Laceyville; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Charles Branham, Tallahassee, FL and Dyan and John Hudson of New Port Richey, FL and a son, Dale R. Hetherington of Philadelphia; a sister, Marion Merwin of Hudson, FL and two brothers, Stephen Hetherington of Cherry Hill, NJ and Mark Hetherington of Palmer, MA.
As it was Mr. Hetherington’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family will receive friends at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, on Saturday afternoon, April 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Leona Harvey
April 3, 2003
Miss Leona E. Harvey, R.N., age 88, formerly of Wyalusing, PA passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Leona was born in Wyalusing, on Jan. 26, 1915, a daughter of the late Henry and Lillian Vanderpoole Harvey. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School and later graduated from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1940.
Leona was a private duty nurse in Philadelphia for many years, moving back to Bradford County in 2002.
She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family, with interment in the Wyalusing Cemetery .
Funeral services were under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing.

Milton Budd
April 3, 2003
Milton C. (Bud) Budd of Hillsgrove, PA passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at his home in Hillsgrove, PA.
Bud was born on Sept. 4, 1933 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Benjamin E. Budd and Martha Worthington Budd. He attended Colwyn High School, graduating in the Class of 1951. From there, he went into the Army, enlisting in 1953 and serving during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged from the military, he went to work at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for a number of years. He married Mariann Potts of Philadelphia on Oct. 12, 1963. He spent most of his career working as an electrician for Westinghouse in Springfield, PA. He purchased a cabin in Hillsgrove in 1987. Bud was a skilled handyman and reconstructed his cabin as an all year residence before retiring in 1997.
Bud was a member of the Colwyn Volunteer Fire Company and a life member of the Colwyn American Legion.
Surviving are his spouse, Mariann Budd, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Tammy Budd, Pottstown, Kenneth and Gloria Budd, Lancaster, Adam Budd, Drexel Hill; two sisters and brother-in-law, June Card, Lansdale, and Martha and Robert Coles, Hagerstown, MD; a sister-in-law, Anne Budd Scheuller, Ft. Meyers, FL; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Benjamin Budd and his sister, Ann Kloper.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsgrove Union Church, with Pastor Phyllis A. Hunter, pastor of the Forksville United Methodist Charge, officiating.
The family provided the flowers and memorials are directed to Guthrie Hospice, RR1, Box 154, Towanda, PA 18848.
Arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.

Ruth Barnes
April 2, 2003
Ruth Isabel (Crisman) Barnes passed away at Lockport Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 following a brief illness. She was just shy of her 100th birthday.
She was the daughter of Mary Leone Benninger and Charles Morris Crisman. Born in Meshoppen on May 8, 1903, she married Lester William Barnes on Dec. 23, 1922 in Niagara Falls, NY while on their lunch break from the Nabisco Shredded Wheat Company. They were married for 32 years when he died in 1954.
Ruth came to Niagara Falls with her mother and stepfather, James Gay in 1920. She was followed from Pennsylvania by Lester Barnes with the purpose of proposing.
Ruth and Lester built a lovely home for themselves on Pasadena Avenue where she lived until she was 97. She then lived with her son, Harold in Ransomville and spent her remaining years getting loving care at the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Nursing Home in Lockport. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Maurice W. Barnes and his wife, Ruth of Youngstown, NY and Harold L. Barnes and his wife, Susan of Ransomville, NY; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband in 1954 and her daughter, Mary Jane Hendershot.
Friends called on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Inc., 8622 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls where funeral services were held on Saturday at 10 a.m. She was interred next to her husband in Riverdale Cemetery , Lewiston, NY.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 8210 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls, NY 14304.

Thelma E. Detwiler
Thelma E. (Sell) Detwiler, 86, of Pennsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at Pennsburg Manor, Pennsburg.
Funeral services were held Oct. 30. Interment was in Pennsburg U.C.C. Cemetery , Pennsburg.
She was the wife of the late John W. Detwiler.
Born in Red Hill, she was the daughter of the late John P. and the late Lillie Mae (Erb) Sell.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Pennsburg United Church of Christ, Pennsburg, and belonged to the Golden Agers Club at the church. She was also a member of the Upper Perkiomen Senior Citizens Club in East Greenville and the Red Hill Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by: two daughters, Marilyn R. Stull of Barto, and Ruth E. Nice of Bechtelsville; one son, Merill Yorgey of Red Hill; two sisters, Margie Leister of Pennsburg and June Ehrie of Topton; four grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pennsburg United Church of Christ, 775 Main Street, Pennsburg, PA 18073.

Franklin M. Weisel
Franklin M. Weisel, 69, of Pipersville, died on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 in his home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. at the C. R. Strunk Funeral Home Inc., 821 W. Broad St., Quakertown.
He was the husband of the late Donna L. (Benner) Weisel.
Born in Milford Township, he was the son of the late Alvin K. and Alverda (Miller) Weisel.
He was a supervisor at Reedman’s in Langhorne before his retirement. Afterward, he worked in the maintenance department at American Rentals in Doylestown and for B&G Enterprise in Plumsteadville.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Spinnerstown.
He was one of the founders and a member of the Lehigh Valley Timing Association. He was also a member of the NRA.
He is survived by: two sons, Wade M. Weisel of Willow Grove and Jeshia T. Weisel at home; two brothers, Gerald C. Weisel of East Greenville and Willard E. Weisel of Sellersville; one sister, Grace M. MacDonald of Camp Hill; one granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, P. O. Box 120, Spinnerstown, PA 18969.
Arrangements: C. R. Strunk Funeral Home Inc., Quakertown.

Cecelia T. Weikel
Cecelia T. Weikel, 88, of Richlandtown, formerly of Perkasie and Quakertown, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital.
Funeral services were held Oct. 29. Interment was in Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
She was the wife of the late Arthur R. Weikel.
Born in Coraopolis, she lived most of her life in the Perkasie and Quakertown areas.
She was a homemaker and was previously employed as a presser for the former JG Pants Factory, Perkasie.
She was Protestant by faith.
She is survived by: two daughters, Faye Lawrence and Joan Frick, both of Sellersville; one son, Kenneth Weikel of Souderton; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Urban.
