Kathryn Tompkins
Kathryn A. Tompkins, 82, of Montrose, PA and formerly of Johnson City, NY, passed away after an extended illness at the Endless Mountains Health Systems, Montrose.
She was born to the late Walter and Tressa (Pickett) Tompkins in Johnson City, NY. Kathryn was a graduate of Johnson City High School, a life-long employee of EJ Shoe Corp. and a member of Primitive Methodist Church, Johnson City.
She is survived by a brother-in-law, Robert E. Goerlitz, Montrose; two nephews, Douglas Goerlitz, Montrose, David Bruce Goerlitz, Berlin, NJ.
A graveside memorial service was held at 12 noon on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002 at the Beaver Meadows Cemetery in Tuscarora Twp., Bradford Co., PA. Pastor Robert E. Goerlitz, officiated.
Donations can be made to the Susquehanna County Library, Monument Square, Montrose, PA, 18801 in Kathryn’s name.

John Skvasik
September 3, 2002
John Skvasik, age 85, of Sugar Run, PA, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 3, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
John was born in Freeland, PA on June 10, 1917, son of the late Stephen and Susan Gasper Skvasik. He married the former Marie Gauer of Elizabeth, NJ in Osbornville, NJ on June 2, 1940. John worked as a welder in the Bayonne Shipyards during WWII and after the war, was a contract home builder in New Jersey until his retirement in 1968. He and Marie moved to Standing Stone where they farmed until moving to Sugar Run in 1982. Marie predeceased him on Aug. 3, 1999.
John was a member of the American Red Cross and also Meals on Wheels. He was a Mason and was the former Worthy Patron for Azure Chapter 87 OES, Cranford, NJ and attended local meetings of Wyalusing Lodge #618 F&AM.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Tamara Skvasik, Wyalusing; two daughters, Elaine Marie Grover and Andrea Loggins, both of Gillett; brothers, Joseph G. Skvasik, Freeland, Albert Squasic, Las Vegas, NV; sisters, Elizabeth Angeli and Delores Angeli, both of Medford, OR; special friends, Diane Kruger, Sugar Run and Bill and Florence Brotzman, Laceyville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Charles McKelvey on Oct. 10, 1985 and by brothers, Andrew and Stephen and sisters, Marie Trautner and Pauline Skvasik.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Beverly Davenport, his former pastor, officiating.
Friends may call at the Homer Funeral Home on Friday from 12 noon until the time of the service.

Helen Karge
Sept. 1, 2002
Mrs. Helen Karge, age 89, of Ringdale, Sullivan County, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at home with her family.
Helen was born Sept. 12, 1912 in Cherry Township, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Elizabeth Harney Farrell. Helen attended St. Basil’s School in Dushore. She married Walter Clarence Karge of Ringdale on Nov. 28, 1930. Walter predeceased her on May 13, 1959.
Helen worked for eight years for the former Weldon Manufacturing Company of Dushore until her husband’s death. At that time, she took over the management of the family dairy farm. Helen milked, drove tractor and operated the farm until retiring.
Helen was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore and a member of its former Altar and Rosary Society, now the Catholic Women’s Guild.
Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, W. Douglas Karge, at home, John R. and Cathy Karge, Ringdale; two daughters and son-in-law, Eunice E. and Francis Richart, Dushore, Irene H. Karge, at home; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Farrell, Dushore; grandchildren, Francis Richart, Jr., Dushore, Jennifer Wettlaufer, Mildred, Jody and Jamie Karge, Ringdale; several nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by brothers, John Farrell, who died in action in WWII; Patrick P. Farrell on Feb. 20, 1990; Edward J. Farrell on Feb. 23, 1994; Leo P. Farrell on April 15, 1995 and Frank J. Farrell on Jan. 24, 1999.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday (today), Sept. 5 at 9:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Peace Cemetery , Dushore.
Friends called on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Catholic Women’s Guild recited the rosary at 3 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. Basil’s Restoration Fund, PO Box 307, Dushore, PA 18614, the Laporte Ambulance Association, PO Box 31, Laporte, PA 18626 or the Mildred Ambulance Association, PO Box 74, Mildred, PA 18632.

Edwin Grow
Sept. 2, 2002
Edwin D. Grow, 61, of Springville, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.
He was born to Lois A. (Wilbur) Grow and the late George M. Grow, who passed away in 1975.
Edwin was a member of the Springville United Methodist Church, an honorary member and former fire chief for the Springville Volunteer Fire Company. He liked camping, hunting and traveling and he loved to help his neighbors and friends.
His wife, Beverly (Way) Grow; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Thomas Krishak; granddaughters, Allison, Kayla and Kristi Krishak; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alyne and John Horn, Marlene and Edward Pompey, all of Springville; nephews and nieces survive Ed.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, with Rev. Edwin A. Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Lynn Cemetery , Springville Township. Visitation was on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday at the funeral home.

Thomas Davis
Sept. 1, 2002
Thomas E. Davis, 61, of John Brady Drive, Muncy, PA, died on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at his home. He and his wife, the former Shirley A. Fowler, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Nov. 19. Born June 9, 1941 in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Ellis and Edith Miller Davis.
Tom had worked at the former GTE Sylvania Plant in Montoursville for over 17 years, at Rheem’s Textile in Dushore, at Wheeler’s Tool Company in Sayre and Marshelek Machine Shop in Montoursville. He was a 1961 graduate of Williamsport High School and a Navy veteran of Vietnam, serving on the USS Yorktown. Tom was a member of the New Life Church in Pennsdale.
He had several inventions including a device used in Navy helicopters and several items purchased and used by GTE Sylvania. Tom loved the outdoors enjoying hunting and working with black powder guns. He was also a beekeeper.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children, Mechelle Warren, a resident of Kramm, NH, Gary Davis of Hughesville and Denise Davis, at home; two brothers, Charles of Pennsdale and Howard of Montoursville; two sisters, Nina Houseknecht of Hughesville and Debra Hensler of Cogan Station and two grandchildren, Felicia and Rachel Warren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the New Life Church in Pennsdale with the Rev. Robert A. Lauver officiating. Burial was in the Twin Hills Memorial Park with graveside military rites by combined veterans organizations.
Friends called on Wednesday at the church.
The McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home in Hughesville was entrusted with arrangements.

James B. Trowbridge
June 5, 2002
James B. Trowbridge, age 88, of Towanda RR2, Asylum Twp., PA, died on Wednesday afternoon, June 5, 2002 at his home.
Born May 14, 1914 in Wyalusing, he was the son of the late Andrew and Minnie Preston Trowbridge. Jim attended Sharpetown Grade School, graduating from Wyalusing High School in 1931.
In early years, Jim worked on a family farm and in 1938, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police, where he served until 1944. For a time, Jim worked as a self-employed garage mechanic and later, in1957, he went to work for M&G Convoy of Buffalo, NY as an automobile transporter. He retired from M&G Convoy on Oct. 31, 1978.
Jake was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Sublett Trowbridge on Dec. 28, 1970. In October of 1983, he married Esther Capwell.
Mr. Trowbridge was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Towanda, a member and Past Noble Grand of Wysox Lodge No. 1152 IOOF and presently served as District Deputy Grand Master IOOF.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Capwell Trowbridge, at home; a daughter, Kathleen Browning and her husband, John Browning of Chippewa Lake, OH; stepsons, John Capwell of Williamsport, Jerry Capwell of California; two grandsons, Donald and Daniel; step-grandchildren, Darrell and his wife, Karen Capwell of Arlington, VA, Traci and her husband, Scott Francis of Fredericksburg, VA; two step-great-grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Adams and Helen Keeney.
The funeral service was held on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with his pastor, Rev. Allen Hulslander of the First United Methodist Church, Towanda, officiating.
The family received friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wysox Lodge No. 1152 IOOF held a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
A graveside committal service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Cemetery , Shavertown.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, 105 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 or to the American Heart Association, 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701 in Mr. Trowbridge’s memory.

Joseph D. Stacey
June 4, 2002
Joseph D. Stacey, age 84, of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Joe was born in Scranton on Jan. 17, 1918, son of the late Walter J. and Mary M. Zarzecki Stacey. He attended the local schools in Scranton until moving to Detroit, MI. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal, Saipan and Peleliu in the Asian Theater and also was stationed in Australia.
Joe was a boiler maker and worked on construction and was involved as an electrician in the construction of the original Procter & Gamble Charmin Plant in Mehoopany.
Joe moved to Sullivan County in 1978 and later resided at Sullivan Terrace for many years.
Joe was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore and a member of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore and the A.J. Bird Memorial Post #384, New Albany.
Survivors include his sister, Lucille Otis, St. Helen, MI; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Stacey of Detroit, MI, also on June 4, 2002.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 10, at 9:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery .
Friends called on Sunday, June 9 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Graveside military services were accorded by members of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore, and members passed in review on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arden Thomas Newton
June 6, 2002
Arden Thomas Newton, 58, of Terrytown, PA, Wyalusing RR2, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 6, 2002 at his home with his loving family at his side.
Arden was born Aug. 7, 1943, a son of the late Walter E., Newton, Sr. and Edna Moon Newton in their family farm home in New Era. He grew up on the family farm and took over its operation at an early age. He graduated from Wyalusing Valley High School, a member of the Class of 1961.
On Aug. 15, 1964, Arden and the former Margie Irene Russell of Rome were married and began their nearly 38 years of marriage together.
Arden operated the family farm until 1975, when he and his wife, Margie purchased the farm that was formerly his Uncle Niles Newton’s along the Susquehanna River at Terrytown. It was there that Arden and his son, Ralph worked together to expand their dairy farm business to its current state.
Over the years, Arden wore many hats. He started as an independent trucker who bought and sold hay. He hauled for the Rynveld Wreath Factory, Indian Hill Charcoal Plant and Kintner Equipment Co. He then began substitute school bus driving and later purchased his own school bus, driving for the Wyalusing Area School District for over two decades.
He was an avid high school sports fan, following the accomplishments of area students in all sports as he bused various teams and their coaches to athletic events.
He co-founded Sharaton Bus Service in 1992, where he enjoyed driving motor coach and meeting new people. Later on, he drove for Martz Bus Co., up until the time of his illness.
Arden was a member of the Evergreen Christian Church. In his younger days, he enjoyed bowling and was a member of various leagues at the Mountainside Lanes in Wyalusing. He was also a member of the Wyalusing Odd Fellows. Presently, he served on the Terrytown Township Planning Commission and was a member of the Wyalusing School Bus Drivers’ Association.
He is survived by his wife, Margie, at home; his son, Ralph C. Newton and daughter-in-law, Jennifer L. Newton of Wyalusing; his daughter, Renee K. Newton, at home and her special friend, Rob Broschart of Overton; his sister, Arlene Carlton of Staunton, VA; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Marvin Ford of Wilmington, DE; a sister-in-law, Jane Newton of Spring Lake; his mother-in-law, Irene Russell of Rome; a brother-in-law and his wife, Rexford and Janet Russell of Rome; a grandchild, Ashlee Victoria Newton and five nieces and 10 nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant son; a brother, Walter Edwin Newton, Jr. and a brother-in-law, Raymond Carlton.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 10 at 3 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, One Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with Pastor Michael Dodd and the Rev. Marvin Ford, officiating.
Interment was in the Bradford County Memorial Park following the service.
Friends called at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Towanda Memorial Hospice, One Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 or to the American Cancer Society, Bradford Unit, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945.

Nella Rae Kocher
June 7, 2002
Mrs. Nella Rae Kocher, age 65, of RR1, Box 1807, Laceyville, PA (Black Walnut), passed away at the Community Medical Center, Scranton, on Friday evening, June 7, 2002.
Born in Binghamton, NY, on April 15, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Manley and Kathleen Carlucci Smith.
Mrs. Kocher was employed at many jobs in her life, but the last few years she enjoyed being a housewife and homemaker for her family.
She was a member of the Mehoopany Baptist Church and she attended the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville.
Surviving are her husband of nine years, Levo G. Kocher of Black Walnut; a daughter, Nella Cosilmon of McDonough, NY; five sons, Charles A. Headman of Centermoreland, James Gregory of Glen Lyon, Stanley Gregory of Harvey’s Lake, Carl Wilcox, Jr. of Black Walnut and Eric Kocher of Black Walnut; a stepdaughter, Lori Frevold of Newport Richey, FL; stepson, Jeffery Kocher of Palm Harbor, FL; a sister, Kathleen Bixby of Harvey’s Lake; brother, Harry Smith of Harvey’s Lake; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Ella (Pee Wee) Wilcox, who passed away in 1993 and a brother, Manley (Tinker) Smith, who passed away in 1992.
Memorial services were held on Monday evening, June 10 at 7 p.m. from the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville, with Rev. Vic Millard of the church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Jersey Hill Cemetery . Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mehoopany Baptist Church or to the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville.

Dorothy J. Hinkley
June 9, 2002
Dorothy J. Hinkley went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 9, 2002 after a long and courageous battle with kidney disease.
She was born in Auburn Center on Jan. 10, 1920. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Frank, Sr.; sisters, Sara Singer and Mary Pero; brother, William Bennett and grandson, Edward Mydlak.
Survivors include her son, Frank Hinkley, Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Endicott, NY; a daughter, Betty Mydlak, Binghamton, NY; granddaughter, Jodi Hinkley and her fiance, Paul Salamida, Syracuse, NY and grandson, Thomas Mydlak, Kirkwood, NY; several loving nieces, nephews and close friends.
She was a retiree of Bendix Corporation in South Montrose and was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, dominoes, board games and was an avid baseball fan. Dorothy was a loving, caring mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed by many.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen. Friends called on Wednesday, June 12 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Button Cemetery , Springville.
