Charles N. Denny

Charles N. Denny, 77, of 212 McClain Ave. died Saturday at Sunnyview Nursing Home after an illness.

Born in Butler, May 15, 1924, he was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Kihn Denny.

He retired as a mail carrier at the Butler Post Office.

Mr. Denny was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and the Italian Society of Butler.

During World War II, he served in the Army.

He was an avid bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Franek Denny, to whom he was married for 54 years; a son, John P. Denny of Butler; a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Barbara) Walls of Butler; and four grandchildren.

A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

DENNY - Friends of Charles N. Denny, who died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 429 Center Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Center Avenue, with the Rev. James Dolan, church pastor, officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael Cemetery .

The Bereavement Group of St. Michael parish will meet at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home to conduct a scriptural wake service.

Katherine ‘Katie’ Curdo

Katherine L. “Katie” Curdo, 74, of Perry Township, Armstrong County died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday at her home after a short illness.

Born in Slickville, Westmoreland County, July 28, 1927, she was the daughter of Andrew and Katherine Rosnachak Zemba.

She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church of Bradys Bend and the choir, Altar Rosary Society and the Young at Heart group of the church.

Mrs. Curdo had worked in the cafeteria at Bruin Elementary School of the Karns City School District.

Surviving are her husband, Peter J. Curdo, whom she married June 25, 1949, in East Vandergrift; a son, Peter Richard Curdo of Bruin; two daughters, Mary Ann Curdo of Karns City R.D. 2 and Mrs. William C. (Kathy) Vaughn of Aliquippa; and three grandchildren. Three brothers, Michael J. Zemba of Ford City, Wendolyn R. Zemba of Whitehouse, Tenn., and Joseph B. Zemba of North Vandergrift; four sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Bertha) Sproul of Albany, Ga., Agnes Zemba of Vandergrift, Mrs. William Margaret Peace of North Apollo and Helen Safranyas of Leechburg; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by a son and three brothers, including her twin brother.

CURDO - Friends of Katherine L. “Katie” Curdo, who died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at RICHARD D HILLIS FUNERAL HOME, 102 Argyle St., Petrolia. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Bradys Bend. The Rev. Thomas Federline, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery , Bradys Bend.

Memorial donations may be made to the VNA of Armstrong County.

Frieda Dumbaugh

Frieda Dumbaugh, 93, of Springfield, Ill, formerly of 201 E. Rockenstein Ave., died at 10:50 p.m. Sunday at Sunny Acres Home, Petersburg, Ill.

Born in Franklin township, Dec. 2, 1907, she was the daughter of Lewis Moss and Jennie Sarver Roxbury.

She and her husband, William H. “Smiley” Dumbaugh, who died Jan. 31, 1968, had been custodians at Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church. She also volunteered as the church librarian for years.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Kay Lesser of Springfield.

In addition to her husband, a son, Dr. William H. Dumbaugh, who received the 1997 Butler High School Distinguished Graduate Award, preceded her in death.

DUMABUGH - Friends of Frieda Dumbaugh, who died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Her grandniece, the Rev. Kathy Mikesell, pastor of Christ Community United Methodist Church, will officiate. Private burial will be at the Presbyterian Church of Prospect Cemetery .

Memorial donations may be made to Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001.

Norma J. Fisher

Norma J. Fisher, 62, of Lawrence Park, Erie County, died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 6, 2001, at her home after a long illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1938, in Butler, she was the daughter of Dorothy E. Burry Fisher and the late Robert T. Fisher.

She lived in New York, N.Y., for 15 years before moving to Erie in 1993.

Ms. Fisher was a nurses’ assistant at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Erie and at the V.A.M.C. in New York for 20 years before retiring.

She was an active member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church, Erie, prior to her illness.

Surviving are a close friend, Frank Pruveadenti; a son, Jeff Doerr of Harrisburg; two daughters, Terri Arnold and Traci Bradl, both of Harrisburg; and three grandchildren. Her mother of Carrabelle, Fla.; a brother, Robert Fisher of Butler; two sisters, Aline Craig of Florida and Jerri Cheesebrough of Erie; a half sister, Rebecca Reinhart of Fombell; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Erie Branch, P.O. Box 8152, Erie, PA 16505.

John ‘Jack’ ‘Bing’ Ganoe

John “Jack” “Bing” Ganoe, 61, of Foxburg died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday at his home after a brief illness.

Born April 23, 1940, in Rockland, Venango County, he was the son of John Samuel and Hannah Marie Gearhart Ganoe.

He was a 1959 graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School, Foxburg.

Mr. Ganoe was last employed by Pinkerton Security. He also did carpentry work and house painting in the A-C Valley area.

He was a member of the Memorial Church of Our Father, Episcopal in Foxburg.

He was an Army veteran and had served with the 101st Airborne Division.

He enjoyed traveling and visiting historical sites, and gardening, landscaping and working outdoors. He was an avid reader.

Surviving are his wife, Avis K. Kinch Ganoe; two sons, A. Daniel Ganoe of Beaver and Andrew G. Ganoe of Foxburg; two daughters, Mrs. Zane (Lisa) Thompson of Foxburg and Mrs. Christopher (Holly) Jordan of Hilliard, Ohio; and four grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, David J. Ganoe of Foxburg; a sister, Mrs. Charles R. (Judy A.) Fleming of Foxburg; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A sister preceded him in death.

GANOE - Friends of John “Jack” “Bing” Ganoe, who died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at CHRISTOPHER M. HILE FUNERAL HOME, St. Petersburg. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Memorial Church of Our Father, Episcopal, Foxburg. The Rev. Edward Lowery, church vicar, will officiate. Burial will be at Foxburg Cemetery .

Memorial contributions may be made to Foxburg Free Library, Foxburg, PA 16036; Foxburg Volunteer Fire Department, Foxburg, 16036; or to the American Cancer Society.

Nancy E. Davis McMullen

Nancy E. Davis McMullen, 68, of West Deer Township, Allegheny County, died Monday.

Born in West Deer Township, July 7, 1933, she was the daughter of George and Rachel Reedy Davis.

She was a life member and a deacon of the Deer Creek United Presbyterian Church, Gibsonia.

Mrs. McMullen was a 1951 graduate of West Deer High School, where she had been a majorette, and was a matron driver for the Handicap Bus Line for the Fox Chapel School District

She enjoyed playing cards.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Vern F. McMullen; two sons, Douglas McMullen of Indianapolis, Ind., and Daniel McMullen of Florence, Ky.; a sister, Roma Park of Valencia; a brother, Jerry Davis of Wilkinsburg; and two grandchildren.

A daughter preceded her in death.

McMULLEN - Friends of Nancy E. Davis McMullen, who died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Byron McElroy officiating. Private burial will be at Deer Creek Church Cemetery , West Deer Township.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Deer Creek United Presbyterian Church, Bairdford Road, Gibsonia, PA 16044.

James R. Staley

James R. Staley, 59, of Evans City died Monday at Passavant Hospital, McCandless.

Born Aug. 12, 1942, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of John and Mary Jay Jacobs Staley.

Mr. Staley graduated from Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh and attended Walsh College, North Canton, Ohio.

He was a member of the St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church of Evans City and the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Etna-Shaler Rotary.

He is survived by his wife, Carol A. Chleboski Staley, whom he married Nov. 7, 1964; a daughter, Mrs. J. Michael (Michele) Elder of Adams Township; a son, James R. Staley Jr. of Evans City; a brother, Donald Staley of Bridgeville; a sister, Mrs. Louis (Jay) Pallone of Scott Township; and six grandchildren.

STALEY - Friends of James R. Staley, who died Monday Nov. 5, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, 116 E. Main St., Evans City. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church, Evans City. The Rev. William Ritzert, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park, Butler Township.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthias Church Building Fund, 417 E. Main St., Evans City, PA 16033; or to the Butler County Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053.

Lois Sunderlin

Lois Sunderlin, 58, of 120 Ayers Ave. died at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Butler, May 10, 1943, she was the daughter of Clarence E. and Edna Mae Watterson Schreffler.

She was a crew person at McDonald’s Restaurant on Route 8 south for the past 18 years.

Ms. Sunderlin also volunteered preparing many dinners at South Butler Fire Hall.

She was a Protestant.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. James (Nancy) Delaney of Petrolia; two brothers, Keith and Jack Schreffler, both of Butler; an aunt, Mrs. Jennie E. Gallagher, with whom she made her home; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A sister, two brothers and a stepbrother preceded her in death.

SUNDERLIN - Friends of Lois Sunderlin, who died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, will be received from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St. Services will follow at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Wilson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park, Butler Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Butler County Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053; or to Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001.

Larry C. Grenet Sr.

Larry C. Grenet Sr., 67, of Butler died at 10:40 a.m. Monday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 11, 1934, in Butler, he was the son of Alexander and Gladys Gray Grenet.

He was a retired local union bricklayer.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 249 and the American Legion Post 117 and D.A.V.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Heitzer Grenet, whom he married Aug. 1, 1964.

Also surviving are a daughter, Diane Grenet of Butler; two sons, Edward Grenet and Larry Grenet, both of Butler; a sister, Donna Grenet of Slippery Rock; a brother, Guy Grenet of Prospect; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sisters and a brother.

GRENET SR. - Friends of Larry C. Grenet Sr., who died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 127 W. Jefferson St. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Henry Hall, Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Butler County Memorial Park.

Marie E. Markich

Marie E. Markich, 74, of Harmony died Monday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1927, in Millvale, she was the daughter of Edward and Emma Rudolph Hufnagel.

She devoted her life to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.

Surviving are two daughters, Jacquelyn Baughman and LaDonne Weyman, both of Harmony; two sons, Victor E. Markich of Melbourne, Fla., and Richard E. Markich of Harmony; a sister, Jean Majors of Harmony; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Victor J. Markich, whom she married Sept. 4, 1947, died March 31, 2001. Three brothers, a sister and two grandchildren also preceded her in death.

MARKICH - Friends of Marie E. Markich, who died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at GLENN-KILDOO FUNERAL HOME, 219 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church, Zelienople. The Rev. Charles Bergman, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at the church Cemetery .
