Mary F. Seaton

Mary F. Seaton, 69, of Grove City, formerly of Hilliards, died at 1:51 p.m. Tuesday at UPMC Northwest, Franklin.

Born Oct. 13, 1933, in Ganister, Blair County, she was the daughter of Chester Dominic and Mary Dellich Carlantonio.

She was an active member of the Ridgeville United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer for 30 years and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Paul Woods VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary and the Grove City Rebekah Lodge and former secretary for Moniteau Meals on Wheels. She also volunteered at Grove City Library.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Deborah) Bailey of Harrisville and Mrs. Michael (Catherine) Schoeffel of Evans City; a stepson, Kenneth H. Seaton of Butler; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by seven sisters, Louise Kiser of Texas, Mrs. Leonard (Evelyn) Pauba of Boyers, Mrs. Donald (Gloria) Day of Hilliards, Julia Cumming of Altoona, Mrs. Elton “Butch” (Joyce) Scriven of Mercer, Mrs. Dallas “Ed” (Janice) McKinley of Warren, Ohio, and Mrs. George “Fritz” (Margie) Richardson of Slippery Rock; and two brothers, Richard and James Carlantonio, both of Boyers.

Her husband, Donald E. Seaton, died Aug. 12, 1978. Two sisters also preceded her in death.

SEATON - Friends of Mary F. Seaton, who died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, West Sunbury. The service will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Barbara Moore, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church of New Castle, officiating. Burial will be at Rosewood Cemetery , Ridgeville, Washington Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Grove City Library.

Bernice E. Lewis

Bernice E. Lewis, 95, of Annisville Road, Bruin, died at 2 a.m. Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Petrolia, Nov. 1, 1907, she was the daughter of Clifford Paul and Laura Jane Watterson Shakley.

She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Chicora.

Mrs. Lewis had attended Shakley School through the eighth grade, and in her younger years, she had been a nurse assistant with Dr. E.L. Mortimer in Petrolia.

Surviving are a stepson, Clarence E. Lewis Jr. of Butler; a brother, Dr. John C. Shakley of Bruin; two sisters, Esther King of Erie and Jean Grossman of Palm Desert, Calif.; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Clarence E. Lewis Sr., whom she married Oct. 5, 1940, in Butler, died May 9, 1995. A brother, three sisters and a stepdaughter also preceded her in death.

LEWIS - Friends of Bernice E. Lewis, who died Sunday, May 18, 2003, will be received from 7 to 8 p.m. today at RICHARD D. HILLIS FUNERAL HOME, 102 Argyle St., Petrolia. A memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with David Morrison of the Chicora Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, presiding. Private burial will be at Bear Creek Cemetery , Petrolia.

John J. Gillis

John J. Gillis, 89, formerly of Prospect, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

He was born July 6, 1913, in Mattituck, Long Island, N.Y.

During World War II, he served in the Navy.

He and his wife, Adalia, moved to Prospect and farmed until 1992. He was also employed by Blaw-Knox of Elwood City for 25 years.

After the death of his wife in 1996, he went to California to live with his daughter.

He is survived by a brother, Joe Gillis; a son, John J. Gillis; a daughter, Christine Scheer; and two grandchildren.

The family will hold a private memorial service.

Dewey B. Crouch

Dewey B. Crouch, 73, of Omaha, Neb., died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Omaha.

Born Oct. 26, 1929, in Claytonia, Clay Township, he was the son of Warren George and Hazel Montgomery Crouch and had lived in Butler County in his younger years.

A 1946 graduate of Butler High School, he enlisted in the Air Force and played in the Air Force Military Band. He later played bassoon for the Omaha and Lincoln symphonies in Nebraska for 22 years.

He graduated from Omaha University in 1953 and was president and chairman of the board of Omaha Federal Savings and Loan Association from 1976 until 1982. He also served as executive vice president of Southwest Bank, as senior vice president of Security National Bank and on the boards of many other Omaha area organizations.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce, whom he married in June 1954; three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Carole) Hoth and Kimberly Newton, both of Omaha, and Mrs. Daniel (Shari) Pflaster of Olatha, Kan.; and five grandchildren. Two brothers, Warren C. Crouch Jr. of Salina, Mich., and Donald M. Crouch of Butler, also survive.

Services were in Omaha.

Calvin C. Smith Jr.

Calvin C. “Smitty, Babe” Smith Jr., 67, of Hampton Township, formerly of Millvale, died Wednesday.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Sandy Smith; three daughters, Carrie Green, Sandra Lee Smith and Cynthia Steedle; five sons, Thomas, Michael, Jeffrey, Timothy and Brian Smith; and 16 grandchildren.

SMITH - Friends of Calvin C. “Smitty, Babe” Smith Jr., who died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Friday at HEALY-HAHN FUNERAL HOME, 425 Grant Ave., Millvale. Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Millvale.

Regis C. Steiner

Regis C. Steiner, 89, of Cowansville R.D. 1 died Thursday at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1913, in Clarion County, he was the son of Stephen and Clara Hartle Steiner.

He retired after 44 years at T.W. Phillips Gas & Oil. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Young Steiner, to whom he was married for 67 years; two daughters, Mrs. William “Tiny” (Teressa) Boltz of Cowansville R.D. 1 and Kay Montgomery of Kittanning; three sons, Dusty and Dennis Steiner, both of Cowansville R.D. 1, and Dana Michael Steiner of East Brady R.D. 1; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mildred Roth of Verona and Maryetta Siperek of Oak Ridge, N.C., also survive.

Four brothers and a grandson preceded him in death.

STEINER - Friends of Regis C. Steiner, who died Thursday, May 15, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at SNYDER-CRISSMAN FUNERAL HOME, Cowansville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Samuel Swick officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery , Chicora R.D. 1.

Carole Ann Sherlock

Carole Ann Sherlock, 69, of San Diego, Calif., lost her battle with cancer on May 8, 2003, at her home.

Born April 21, 1934, in Butler, she was the daughter of Anne Sheptak and the late Wallace Sheptak.

After graduating from Butler High School in 1952, she became a flight attendant with Capital Airlines, now United Airlines. She ended her career with the airline while based in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1960.

Her lifelong interest in Montessori teaching methods led her to obtain a Montessori teaching credential in San Diego. She then was a volunteer at the Curie Elementary School for two years.

In the fall of 1975, she bought Twin Trees Preschool on Fay Avenue in La Jolla, Calif., and transformed the school into the Montessori School of La Jolla. Her loving relationship with the children established a special bond, which enhanced their school experience. She was innovative in using the Montessori principles in every phase of the children’s learning and had exceptional patience and ability to reach and positively influence children with social, emotional and learning difficulties. Her mentoring of teachers has created many wonderful Montessori teachers.

In 1983, she expanded the school with two additional classrooms at La Jolla Decatur Elementary School on Soledad Mountain Road; and in 1986, she bought the Montessori School of Mira Mesa. She owned and operated the Mira Mesa and Fay Avenue locations until sold in 1993. In 1998, she expanded the Soledad facility into a three-classroom site, which is currently operated by her daughter, Shannon.

Carole had a natural curiosity for all things in life and learning. She had a passion for flowers and gardening. Bonsai held her interests as well as an attraction to all things of Asian influence. Carole also loved to travel, which included trips to Canada, Belgium, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and Australia.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Sherlock, whom she married Oct. 13, 1962, in Grand Prairie, Texas; two daughters, Catherine Chantal and Shannon Bingham; her beloved granddaughters, Breanna and Alyssa; and a son, Thomas M.; all of San Diego. Also surviving are her mother of Butler, and two brothers, Wallace of St. Paul, Minn., and John of Butler.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Diane.

Visitation was held May 12 at El Camino Memorial Park, San Diego. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. May 13 at Our Mother of Confidence Church, San Diego. Interment followed at El Camino Memorial Park.

Arrangements were handled by El Camino Memorial Park.

Lynn D. Meier

Lynn D. Meier, 56, of 322 Old Plank Road died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Butler, Dec. 14, 1946, he was the son of Ralph H. and Sophie Zubick Meier.

He worked at AK Steel-Butler Works for 37 years.

Mr. Meier was a member of Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church, William H. Miller F&AM Lodge 769, Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club, Sterling Run Sportsman’s Club of Benezett in Elk County and the National Horse Lovers Club of America. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Bryant Meier, whom he married Feb. 7, 1970; a son, Brent W. Meier of Denver, a daughter, Mrs. John (Bridget) Vissari of Cincinnati; and his parents of Butler.

MEIER - A memorial service for Lynn D. Meier, who died Thursday, May 15, 2003, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James Mohr II will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Butler County Unit, P.O. Box 3014, Butler PA 16003; the VNA Hospice Program, 154 Hindman Road, Butler, PA 16001; or to the NRA, P.O. Box 420649, Palm Coast, FL 32142-0649.

Michael G. Long

Michael G. Long, 48, of West Sunbury died Wednesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Teaneck, N.J., he lived in Maywood, N.J., before moving to West Sunbury 15 years ago.

He was a salesman for years at various employers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also was a rock and roll performer at clubs and restaurants for more than two decades.

Surviving are his mother, Ruth Layton Long of Lavallette, N.J.; three brothers, Stephen Long of Mendam, N.J., Dennis Long of East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., and James Long of Helotes, Texas; and two sisters, Janet Long of North Kingston, R.I., and Mary Elizabeth Long of Clinton, N.J. Also surviving are two nieces, two nephews and his former, wife, Debbie Dillman Long of West Sunbury.

His father, Russell Long, died in 2001.

LONG - Friends of Michael G. Long, who died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at TIMOTHY E. RYAN HOME FOR FUNERALS, 706 Grand Central Ave., Lavallette, N.J. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Lavallette. Burial will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery , Torn River, N.J.

Alberta Hutton

Alberta Hutton, 93, of Mars, formerly of Zelienople and Freeport, died Feb. 8 at St. John Specialty Care Center, Mars.

Born Oct. 23, 1909, in Clearfield Township, she was the daughter of Albert and Zilla Glenn Rieger.

A 1927 graduate of Butler High School, she received a degree in intermediate education from Slippery Rock State Teachers’ College, now Slippery Rock University, in 1929. She retired after 31 years of teaching at schools in Butler and Armstrong counties.

She was a former member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Butler and Trinity Lutheran Church of Freeport. She also had belonged to the English Lutheran and Seaman Memorial Lutheran churches in Zelienople, where she sent birthday and get-well cards to parishioners for years.

She was a former volunteer at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights and was a former member of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Butler. She was a past president of the College Club in Freeport and a charter member of the Young Women in Business club at the Butler YWCA.

She is survived by a son, David Glenn Hutton of Newark, Del; a sister, Mary C. Hoehn of Zelienople; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hutton, who died in November 1990.

HUTTON - A memorial service for Alberta Hutton, who died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Seaman Memorial Chapel, Passavant Retirement & Health Center, 402 Main St., Zelienople. The Rev. John Hoogerbrugge will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John Specialty Care Center, 500 Wittenberg Way, Mars, PA 16046; or Passavant Retirement Center, for patient care, 401 S. Main, St. Zelienople, PA 16063.

Arrangements are entrusted to BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, Zelienople.
