Melvin C. Dangle

Melvin C. Dangle, 92, of Montoursville, passed away Nov. 6, 2008 at the Valley View Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1916 in Warrensville, he was the son of Harry Franklin and Lilian Swartz Dangle.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy.

Mr. Dangle was a processor for the former Valley Farms Dairy, a member of the Warrensville Baptist Church, and was a lifetime member of the Blessing Mountain Hunting Club. He loved to hunt and fish.

Surviving is his wife, Dorothy L.; three sons, Ronald and David both of Cogan Station and William of Pine Creek; four step-children, Patricia (Charles) Houseknecht of Troy, Sherry (Richard) Whalen of Linden, Virginia (Harold) Fraley of Muncy, and Steven (Gwen) Fink of Montoursville; twenty-three grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 10, at Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville, with the Rev. William J. Younger officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

John H. Weed

John H. “Jack” Weed, 69, of 2381 Highway 405, Muncy, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at the Muncy Valley Hospital emergency room.

Born in Syracuse, NY on January 15, 1941, he was a son of the late John Weed and Clara I. (Barker) Weed Myers.

Following graduation from Liverpool High School, Liverpool, NY, in 1959, he served in the U. S. Navy. Jack worked in management during his career, mostly in the food service industry with hotels and lodging. He was a manager in the Pocono area for a few years and previously worked and resided in New Jersey and Harrisburg before moving to Muncy.

Jack attended Grace Baptist Church, Muncy. In his spare time he enjoyed reading.

Surviving are four sisters, Mary E. Manny and Linda A. Weed, both of Milton, Karen L. (Leon) Ore of Millville, NJ, and M. Jean (James) Martin of Warrensville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Teffeteller, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Muncy. Burial with full military honors will follow in Muncy Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 103, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Doris E. Peterman

Doris Elaine Peterman, 88, of 410 S. Market Street, Muncy, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at the Muncy Valley Hospital.

Born September 29, 1922 in Williamsport, she was a daughter of the late Leroy C. and Sarah A. (Liddic) McCloskey. On October 18, 1941 she married William O. Peterman at the Montoursville Bethany Lutheran Church. His death on September 23, 2003 broke a marital union of 61 years.

A 1940 graduate of Montoursville High School, she was employed at the Muncy State Correctional Institute from 1955 until retiring in 1985. She worked as a matron the first ten years and then as Food Service Supervisor the next twenty years. Doris also assisted her husband with the successful operation of Peterman’s Farm Market in Muncy from 1972 until 1992.

She was an active member of St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Women of St. Andrew, sang in the choir, and helped in the kitchen. Doris was also a member of the Muncy Valley Hospital auxiliary and helped every year with the Lawn Party. She enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, and was quite accomplished at working jigsaw puzzles during the winter months.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Janet K. Peterman of Muncy; three grandsons, William B. Peterman and his fiancée, Kristen M. Sigel, of Centre Hall, Robert W. Langer and his wife, Kristin L., of Mechanicsburg, and Brian R. Langer and his wife, Erin M., of Williamsport; one brother, James L. McCloskey of Turbotville; two sisters, Catherine L. Raplee and Jean L. Stryker, both of Bend, Oregon; two great-granddaughters, Caitlyn Jann Langer and Amy Elaine Langer; and her former son-in-law, Richard W. Langer of Muncy.

In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her daughter, Janet E. Langer, who died June 27, 2002.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, and again from 11:30 a.m. until noon on Tuesday at St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main St., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at noon. Officiating will be her pastor, Rev. Dr. Donald P. Edwards. Burial will follow in Muncy Cemetery.

The family welcomes flowers; however, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main St., Muncy, PA 17756 or a charity of one’s choice.

Terry F. Sampsell

Terry F. Sampsell, 79, of 30 Tabbs Drive, Williamsport, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Williamsport Hospital.

Born July 31, 1930 in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Folmar and Doris E. (Jones) Sampsell.

He and his wife of 54 years, the former Edith B. Karschner, were married April 30, 1955.

A 1948 graduate of Williamsport High School, he served in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Terry earned a degree in Architectural Drafting from the former Williamsport Area Community College, now Penn College. For years he was a partner with William Ealer in an independent architectural consulting firm in Williamsport. Terry also instructed an architectural drafting course at Penn College of Technology, from which he retired after 15 years.

He was a member of Duboistown United Methodist Church and also held memberships in the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one sister, Beverly J. Lippoli of Williamsport; one half- brother, John Rosevear of South Williamsport; one half-sister, Jill A. Sowich of Williamsport, and one step-grandson, Terry Allen Denius.

He was predeceased by his parents and a step-son, Charles Victor Denius, Jr., who died April 11, 1993.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Duboistown United Methodist Church, 133 Summer St., Duboistown. Officiating will be his minister, Pastor Cindi J. Gunter. Burial with full military honors will follow in Muncy Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lycoming County S.P.C.A., 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.

Thomas H. Edwards

Thomas H. Edwards, 81, of Elimsport Road, Montgomery, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, where he had resided for the past 3 years.

He was born July 9, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland.

His wife of 34 years, the former Arlene M. (Sones) Hester, survives.

Thomas was employed as a machinist at Litton Industries, Williamsport and later at the former Sprouts, now Andritz, Muncy where he retired from in 1991 after 17 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two stepsons, Frank (Judy) Hester of Hughesville and David Hester of Montgomery; a stepdaughter, Judy (John) Hoffman of Watsontown; a sister, Mary Merzbacker of West Miami, FL; six step grandchildren and eleven step great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be Rev. Max L. Walters, Jr., pastor of Lairdsville Faith Church. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
