Mary E. 'Betty' Groninger
MIFFLINTOWN - Mary E. "Betty" Groninger, 84, of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Lewistown, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 15, 1916, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary E. (Jarrett) Contner. Her husband, Charles Robert Groninger, died Aug. 7, 1967. Surviving are: three sons, Larry L. Groninger, Lewistown, James E. Groninger, Northumberland, and Thomas R. Groninger, Lewisburg; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Jane Pursel. She was a 1934 graduate of Lewistown High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Towpath Naturalists and the Mifflin County Historical Society. She enjoyed traveling, needlecrafts and wood carving. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Cathy Janke officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation (no viewing) will be held from 10:30 am until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Towpath Naturalists, c/o Marilyn Miller, treasurer, 530 Lindbergh Way, Lewistown, PA 17044 or to the charity of one's choice.

Paul C. Gross
BEAVER SPRINGS - Paul C. Gross, 93, of Beaver Springs died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Evangelical Community Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past 10 days. Born May 6, 1907, in Beaver Springs, he was a son of the late Charles C. and Annie (Bilger) Gross. His wife, Sara M. (Ocker) Gross, whom he married Dec. 25, 1929, survives, residing in Beaver Springs. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Ellen) Lauver, Dauphin; a brother, Fred Gross, Newville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jennie Mattern, Cora Rigel and Mary Freed, and by three brothers, George Gross, John Gross and Mark Gross. He taught school in the Adams Township one-room Schoolhouse in the early 1920s. He then worked at Beavertown Block and the former Kline Motors. He owned and operated Gross's Store in Beaver Springs for 27 years. During that time and after, he was a school bus contractor for the Midd-West School District, from which he retired. He served as secretary for the Spring Township Municipal Authority for 50 years and served the area as a Justice of the Peace. He served on the former Spring Township School Board and the Adamsburg Cemetery Association. He was a member of Christ Church, Beaver Springs, where he served as a Church Council member and taught Sunday school for 70 years. He was a member of the F&AM Lodge No. 619, Middleburg and the Harrisburg Consistory, and a member of the Beaver Springs volunteer Fire Company. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and enjoyed reading. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Church, Beaver Springs, with the Rev. David Meckley officiating. Interment will be in the Adamsburg Cemetery, Beaver Springs. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, where the family will be present 7-9 p.m. and a Masonic service will be held at 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Christ Church, Beaver Springs, PA 17812. Elsie Elizabeth Grove
MCVEYTOWN - Elsie Elizabeth Grove, 89, formerly of McVeytown, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Messiah Village Nursing Care Center, Mechanicsburg. Born May 5, 1911, in McVeytown, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Margaret (Ryder) Grove and foster daughter of the late Roy and Emma Brubaker. Surviving are: a brother, Lewis A. Grove, McVeytown; two stepbrothers, Lloyd Grove and Harvey Buckley, both of Lewistown; and a stepsister, Agnes Grove Booher, Somerset. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. She was a member of Crossroads Brethren in Christ Church, Mt. Joy. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Messiah Village Brethren in Christ Church, 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, with the Rev. Ronald Burgard and the Rev. James Lesher officiating. Interment will be in the Crossroads Church Cemetery, Mt. Joy. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Messiah Village Brethren in Christ Church, PO Box 2015 Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Cocklin Funeral Home Inc., Dillsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Andrew James Guizio
SUNBURY - Andrew James Guizio, 20, of Sunbury, formerly of Mifflintown and Johnstown, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Coal Township, Northumberland County, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born Sept. 22, 1980, in Johnstown, he was the son of Martin Guizio Sr. of Johnstown and Mary (Boxler) Miller of Mifflintown. He is survived by a companion, Jessica Kuhn of Sunbury. Also surviving are: brothers, Chris Guizio and Martin Guizio Jr., both of Johnstown and Anthony Guizio of Cresson; maternal grandmother, Lydia Boxler of Windber; stepmother, Beverly (Schmalz) Guizio of Johnstown; stepfather, William Miller of Mifflintown; step-grandparents, John and Betty Miller of Williamsburg; and stepbrother and stepsister, Bryan Schmalz and Amy Schmalz, both of Johnstown. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Anthony and Mary (Hoffman) Guizio and maternal grandfather, Benjamin Boxler Jr. He was a 1998 graduate of Juniata High School, Mifflintown. He was employed as a technician at Huffy Service First Inc. and Treen Pallet Shop. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Harris Funeral Home, 500 Cherry Lane (Richland), Johnstown, with Father David Peles officiating. Interment will be in Richland Cemetery. Friends may call 2-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held in Mifflintown at a later date.

Evelyn M. Guthridge
LEWISTOWN - Evelyn M. Guthridge, 86, of Ohesson Manor Nursing Home and formerly of 713 W. Sixth St., Lewistown, died at 6:20 p.m. Sat., Dec. 22, 2001, in the home. Born March 6, 1915, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Stella (Goss) Silks and step-daughter o-f the late George Silks. She was the wife of the late Clifford Guthridge, who died Aug. 21, 1997. Surviving are a son, Robert A. Guthridge of 144 Hawsbrick St., Lewistown; three sisters, Arietta Osborne, Dorothy May and Beatrice Trutt, all of Lewistown; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Snyder; a son, John Guthridge; an infant son; a brother and a sister. She retired from Fisher Electronics in 1980 with 15 years of service. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home - Woodlawn with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Ruth I. Gamble Gutshall
LANDISBURG - Ruth I. Gamble Gutshall, 74, of Landisburg RR2, formerly of Blain, died Tuesday in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Bron March 30, 1927 in East Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Robert D. and Maude (Smith) Gamble. She was the widow of Blaine C. Gutshall. Surviving are: children, Blaine C. Gutshall Jr., Steelton, Stephen L. Gutshall, Landisburg and Charlotte G. Fry, Landisburg; a brother and sisters, Ritter Gamble, Stuart, FL, Sara Frey, Spruce Creek, Beulah Briggs, Fayetteville and Alfretta Milliken, East Waterford, and four grandchildren. She was a retired cook at the Blain Hotel and was a member of the Blain United Methodist Church, the Landisburg Ambulance club and the Landisburg Fire Company. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Nickel Funerla Home, Loysville, with the Rev. Roz Mason officiating. Interment will be in Blain Cemetery, Blain RR1. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the services at the funeral home.

Betty J. Haag
CAMP HILL - Betty J. Haag, 77, of 420 Allendale Way, Camp Hill, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield. She is survived by her husband, John Haag of 420 Allendale Way, Camp Hill. Also surviving are: two sons, John A. Haag, Albany, NY, and Charles L. Haag, New Cumberland; brothers and sister, Elmer F. Charles Jr., Lewistown, John H. Charles, Elkins, NC, and Adeline Fluke, Lewistown; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She retired as a former corporate secretary from Whitco Metrocom, Lemoyne. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Highland Park, Camp Hill. She was also a member of the West Shore Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, Camp Hill. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Road, Highland Park, Camp Hill.

Hilda A. Hack
MIFFLINTOWN - Hilda A. Hack, 89, of Mifflintown RR1 (Quigley Heights), died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Born Sept. 2, 1911, in Mexico, she was the daughter of the late Samuel A. and Vera (Hack) Mertz. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Mertz and Samuel A. Mertz Jr. She had worked in the spinning department of the American Viscose Corporation, Lewistown and as a seamstress at the Rae-Sel Dress Factory in Port Royal. She enjoyed cats and watching birds. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Kelley officiating. Interment will be in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the SPCA, RR1, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
