Harold A. Shawver
MCCLURE - Harold A. Shawver, 67, of McClure RR1, died at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Loving Care Personal Care Home, Selinsgrove, where he has been a resident since 1979. Born Oct. 24, 1933, in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Ralph and Lottie E. (Romig) Shawver. He is survived by three brothers, James Shawver of Loving Care Personal Care Home, Selinsgrove, Glen W. Shawver, McClure and Jay Shawver, Lewistown RR3; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte (Sears) Scott Hamacher and a brother, Eugene Shawver. He was a member of the Wagner United Methodist Church. He enjoyed drawing and gardening. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the McClure Chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, North Brown Street, McClure, with the Rev. Larry Lehland officiating. Interment will be in the Wagner Methodist Cemetery, McClure. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and the family still be present from 7-9 p.m.

Guy N. Sheaffer
LEWISTOWN - Guy N. Sheaffer, 73, of 227 W. Third St., Lewistown, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1928, in Yeagertown, he was a son of the late James H. and Emma (Wills) Sheaffer. His wife, Olevia (Greer) Sheaffer, whom he married Aug. 30, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: children, Terry L. Sheaffer, 915 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, Barry Lynn Sheaffer, 227 W. Third St., Lewistown and Tina J. Sheaffer, 131 Valley St., Lewistown; sister and brothers, Clara Sunday, Milroy, James H. Sheaffer Jr., Howard, Kennard Sheaffer and Joseph Sheaffer, both of Lewistown; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Avtex Fibers in 1990 with 20 years of service and was currently employed by the Lake dealerships. He was a life member of East Derry, City, Hook and Ladder, Yeagertown and Fame Fire Companies. He was also a member of the Brooklyn Hose Company, VFW Post 7011, the American Legion and Legionnaires and the Loyal Order of the Moose 143, Lewistown. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bernard Carpenter officiating. There will be a flag presentation by VFW Post 7011. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Mifflin-Juniata United Way, 13 E. Third St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

James Blanchard Sheaffer
RICHFIELD - James Blanchard Sheaffer, 59, of Richfield RR2, died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at his home. Born Sept. 11, 1941, in Richfield RR2, he was the son of the late Blanchard Edward and Dorothy E. (Chubb) Sheaffer. His wife, Gracie Carrie (Fuller) Sheaffer, whom he married Feb. 22, 1964, survives. Also surviving are: two brothers, Clarence Sheaffer Sr. of Millerstown RR2 and Lloyd Sheaffer of Richfield RR2; a half-brother, Palmer Messimer of Millerstown RR2; a sister, Alice Crossgrove of Richfield RR2; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Clarence Sheaffer Jr. in August 1995. He attended school at the Quaker Run Grammar schoolhouse and East Juniata High School. He retired from Groce's Silk Mill, Selinsgrove, in 1981, where he was a mechanic. Earlier, he was employed for seven years as a laborer by the former Bendix Homes plant in Middleburg. He was Protestant by faith. He enjoyed hunting and mechanical tinkering. Services will be private and burial will be at the discretion of the family. The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

John H. Sheaffer
PORT ROYAL - John H. Sheaffer, 80, of 911 Milford St., Port Royal died at 8:22 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 19, 1920, in Turbett Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Samuel D. Sheaffer and Mary Hazel (Shotzberger) Sheaffer. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy B. (Stine) Sheaffer, whom he married on Oct. 23, 1950. Also surviving are: two sons, James M. Sheaffer of Port Royal and Paul E. Sheaffer of Harrisburg; two brothers, Samuel D. Sheaffer Jr. of Camp Hill and Raymond W. Sheaffer of Lewistown; two sisters, Verna Foltz of Scotland, PA and Marian Douglas of Waynesboro; and four grandchildren. He was the owner and operator of Sheaffer-Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep, Mexico, PA. He was in business since 1954. He was a graduate of Port Royal High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and took part in the Normandy Invasion. He was also a Korean War Veteran and attained the rank of captain. He was a member of the Mexico Presbyterian Church, past master of the Union Lodge #324, F.&A.M., Mifflintown, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Forest #88 and the Harrisburg Consistory. He served many years as a director on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank, Mifflintown. His funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. M. Eugene Heidler officiating. Interment will be in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where masonic services will be held at 8:45 p.m. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Juniata Veterans Council. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mexico Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 387, Port Royal, PA 17082-0387.

Clair L. Shearer
YORK - Clair L. Shearer, 75, of York, and formerly of East Waterford, died at 7:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the York Hospital. Born July 20, 1925, in Toboyne Township, Perry County, he was the son of the late Bruce L. and Mary M. (McMullen) Shearer. His wife, Dorothy R. (Robinson) Shearer, whom he married Nov. 23, 1949, survives. Also surviving are: children, Gary L. Shearer, Harrisburg, Alan C. Shearer, Mount Holly Springs, and Mrs. Cyrus (Lori S.) Arthur, Stewartstown; sisters and brother, Louise Shoop, Port Royal, Miriam Love and Darwin Shearer, both of East Waterford, and Lois Wert, Chambersburg; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Henry. He was a 1943 graduate of Dry Run High School. He retired from the Box Shop of Pittsburgh Plate & Glass, Carlisle. He was a member of the East Waterford Presbyterian Church, the church choir and the Sunday school of the church. He was also a member of the East Waterford Fire Company; the Dorsett Grange 1888; and had served on the Fourth of July Celebration Committee of East Waterford. He also was well known for playing Santa Claus at various functions throughout the East Waterford area. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed woodworking and helping people. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the East Waterford Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Frank Muse officiating. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery, Concord. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown. There will be no viewing at the church Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to: the East Waterford Presbyterian Church, PO Box 174, East Waterford, PA 17021.

Thelma A. Shearer
MIFFLIN - Thelma A. Shearer, 82, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin, formerly of East Waterford RR1, died at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the village. Born June 12, 1919, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Florence (Armstrong) Mefferd. Her husband, Thomas R. Shearer of Locust Grove Village, whom she married June 21, 1941, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Lowell M. Shearer of Mifflintown RR3; a sister, Virginia Miller of Milroy; three step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Wesley Chapel, Reeds Gap. She enjoyed sewing and playing the piano and organ. Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Stuart H. Lengel Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery, Academia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Friends of Locust Grove, HC 67, Mifflin, PA 17058. Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin J. 'Barney' Sheeler
BERWICK - Melvin J. "Barney" Sheeler, 77, of Berwick RR3, Davis Trailer Court, died Sunday evening April 22, 2001, at his home. He had been in failing health for one year. Born Sept. 16, 1923, in Somerset County, he was a son of the late George W. and Olive (Bailey) Sheeler. His wife of 55 years, Alma (Silks) Sheeler, originally of Lewistown, survives. He is also survived by children, Mrs. William (Bonnie Lee) Bearley, Lewistown, George W. Sheeler, Bellefonte, Jerry R. Sheeler, Mifflinville; Timothy R. Sheeler, Berwick, and Michael J. Sheeler, Middleburg; a sister, Gladys Henry, Harrisburg; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Lou Sheeler in 1958 and a brother, Clyde G. Sheeler in 1988. He served with the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater, earning the Bronze Star Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with four bronze stars. Following the war, he farmed the Mifflin County Farm near Lewistown. He then worked in the construction and building trades throughout the state. Following retirement, he assisted his son at local fairs and carnivals with their food and games stand. He was also a caretaker at Davis Trailer Court. He was a member of the Berwick VFW. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call noon until the time of the service today at the funeral home.

Charles W. 'Bud' Sheerer
MIFFLINTOWN - Charles W. "Bud" Sheerer, 96, of Brookline Village, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Locust Run, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2001, at Brookline Manor. Born Jan. 23, 1905, in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Florence (Detra) Sheerer. His first wife, Blennie B. (Graybill) Sheerer, died Nov. 12, 1953, and his second wife, Martha (Slagle) McKee Sheerer, died April 12, l999. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Earl (Dena) Wagner of Mifflintown and Mrs. Herbert (Dorothy) Goodling of Thompsontown RR2; stepdaughter, Mary "Betty" Beagle of Berea, KY; stepson, Herman McKee of Thompsontown RR2; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor Powley; two sons, Walter Sheerer and Charles Sheerer Jr.; three brothers, Brehman Sheerer, John Sheerer, and J. Howard Sheerer; and two sisters, Mae Wirt and Nellie Heimbaugh. He was a retired Pennsylvania Railroad car repairman. He was the oldest member of the Locust Run United Methodist Church and was a member of the Locust Run Community Association. He enjoyed woodworking and repairing small engines. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Locust Run United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Maureen Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St, Mifflintown or from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Locust Run UM Church Building Fund, RR2, Thompsontown, PA 17094.
