Nelson S. Charles
THOMPSONTOWN - Nelson S. Charles, 84, of Thompsontown RR1, died at 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the Community General Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg.

Born July 14, 1915, in Liverpool Township, he was the son of the late John A. and Sarah (Sarver) Charles. His wife, Hannah B. (Brubaker) Charles, whom he married June 30, 1942, died in April of 1992.

Surviving are: a daughter, Sandra K. Rhoads, Mifflintown RR2; a brother, John Charles, Liverpool; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six sisters.

He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served from 1942-1946 in the American, European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatres.

He owned and operated, along with his brother, the Charles Brothers Meat Market in Liverpool and Newport. In the early 1950s, he worked as a shovel operator for Quigley's Quarry, Oakland Mills.

He attended Centerville Lutheran Church, Perry Valley and later attended the East Salem United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR2. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0177, Newport and enjoyed woodworking.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Robert Gray officiating. Interment will be in the East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1, with full military honors conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Association.

Friends may call from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to: the East Salem United Methodist Church, RR2, Box 1170, Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to the Delaware Township Fire Company, RR2, Box 1102, Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Robert W. Check
GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Robert W. Check, 75, of 8805 McCracken Boulevard, Garfield Heights, Ohio, formerly of Lewistown, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Holy Family Home in Parma, Ohio.

Born Oct. 18, 1923, in Monessen, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Hudacek) Weaver.

He is survived by a brother, Edward "Brother Anthony" Check of Vermont.

He was preceded in death by sisters and brother, Margaret L. Brown, Mary Campbell, and John J. Check.

He was an engineer.

Services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Rybicki & Son Funeral Homes, 4640 Turney Road, Garfield Heights, Ohio and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Therese Church, Granger Road, Garfield Heights, Ohio. Interment will be in the Holy Name Cemetery, Monessen, Pa.

Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Dr. Ronald L. Cherry
HUNTINGDON - Dr. Ronald L. Cherry, 68, of 1830 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died at 10 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.

Born Nov. 25, 1931, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles J. and M. Margaret (Laird) Cherry. His wife, Elizabeth Ann (Ellis) Cherry, whom he married Aug. 24, 1957, survives.

Also surviving are children, Charles C. Cherry, Chicago, Ill. and Anne Elizabeth Rice, Greencastle, and two grandchildren.

He was a 1949 graduate of Lewistown High School and graduated summa cum laude from Juniata College in 1953. In 1961, he received his Ph.D. in economic theory from Princeton University.

He had been an instructor in economics at Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., taught a year at Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan, and joined the faculty of Juniata College in 1958, retiring in May of 1998 after 40 years. In 1977, he was awarded the Beachley Distinguished Professor Award for outstanding teaching.

He was a member of Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon.

He was former president and trustee of the Huntingdon County Historical Society; served on the board of Swigart Associates for 15 years; retired in June from the board of Mutual Benefit Insurance Company after 16 years; and served on the board of the J.B. Kunz Company for 15 years.

He enjoyed model railroading, geneology, and flower gardening.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Stone Church of the Brethren, 17th and Moore streets, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dale W. Dowdy and the Rev. Christy L. Dowdy officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.

Friends will be received Sunday following the memorial service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Ron Cherry Scholarship Fund of Juniata College, c/o Development Office, Juniata College, 1700 Moore St., Huntingdon, PA 16652.

The John B. Brown Funeral Home Inc., 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria J. Chohany
LEWISTOWN - Gloria J. Chohany, 64, of 723 South Main St., Lewistown, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999, at her home.

Born Jan. 13, 1935, in Duncannon, she was a daughter of the late John and Emma (Ferguson) Weaver.

Surviving are: sons, Stephen D. Chohany Jr. of Duncannon and Michael K. Chohany of Trappe; her long-time companion, Carol A. Caldwell of 723 S. Main St., Lewistown; sister, Arlene Maneval of New Bloomfield, and four grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a brother Lloyd Weaver and two sisters, Betty Weaver Little and Pearl Weaver Miller.

She was employed by Lear Corp.

A gathering of remembrance will be held from noon-6 p.m. Tuesday at 723 S. Main St., Lewistown. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

The Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 North Main St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah J. Christensen
YORK - Sarah J. Christensen, 65, of Springettsbury Township, York, died at 10:33 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 at Memorial Hospital, York.

Born Sept. 28, 1934, in Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Pearl (Dippery) Armstrong. Her husband, James K. Christensen, preceded her in death.

Surviving are: two sons, Dennis Christensen, York, and Gary L. Christensen, Mechanicsburg; sister and brothers, Linda Rudy, Elliottsburg, Harry Armstrong Jr., Fairfield, Calif., Charles Armstrong, Reedsville, and Larry Armstrong, Lewistown; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; stepchildren, Julius G. Christensen II, York, Fredrick W. Christensen, Spring Grove, and Denise James, Reisterstown; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Kishacoquillas High School.

She was an encoder for York Postal Rec Center and was the former owner of the Water Street Cafe and Sarah Jane Antiques, York.

She was a member of Locust Grove United Church of Christ, York;the Women of the Moose Chapter 694 and the York Catholic Bingo Wednesday Group.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St., York, with the Rev. Lee E. Zortman, officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove United Church of Christ Cemetery, York.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.

Mary Rice Church
WINTER PARK, FL - Mary Rice Church, 96, of 635 Gilbert Rd., Winter Park, FL died at 12:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Integrated Health Services, Winter Park, FL.

Born on Jan. 10, 1903, in Carlisle, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Jennie Rebecca (Bryner) Rice. Her husband, Ashbrook H. Church, preceded her in death on May 5, 1970.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Fred J. (Mary Ann) Detzel of Winter Park, FL; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ashbrook Edward Church, and was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Melvin S. Rice, and three sisters, Helen Kaseeta, Verna Bearley and Ethel Lepley.

She was a member of St. Andrew's Methodist Church, Winter Park, FL.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, with the Rev. Frank J. Swartz officiating.

There will be no viewing.

Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Sylvia J. Civitts
MAPLETON DEPOT - Sylvia J. Civitts, 59, of Mapleton RR, formerly of 11 S. Division St., Mount Union, died at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital.

Born May 11, 1940, in Blacklog Valley, she was the daughter of the late George and Laura (Machimer) Bilger. Her husband, Jack I. Civitts, whom she married July 23, 1961, died Sept. 28, 1972.

Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Betty) McKim, Mapleton RR, with whom she lived, and Mrs. Jeff (Nancy) Harker, HCR 61, Mill Creek; brothers and sisters, Jess Bilger, Ferguson Valley, Norman Bilger, Violet Dell, Mrs. Earl (Erma) Kane, and Thelma "Bets" Bilger, all of Mount Union, Mrs. John (Stella) Bair, Mill Creek, and Mrs. Carl (Vera) Lynn, Mapleton RR; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Ardenheim Church.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. George "Buddy" Baird and the Rev. Myers Kimmel officiating. Interment will be in the Mountainview Cemetery, Mill Creek.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: Home Nursing Agency, 900 Bryan St., Huntingdon, PA 16652 or to Area Agency on Aging, 915 Washington St., Huntingdon, PA 16652.

Norman D. Clark
HONEY GROVE - Norman D. Clark, 78, of Honey Grove, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday March 31, 2000, at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.

Born Oct. 25, 1921 in Lack Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Albert and Melinda (Leonard) Clark. His wife, Catherine (Moyer) Clark, survives.

Also surviving are: a son and daughter, James A. Clark, Honey Grove, and Mary Anne Shellenberger, Carlisle; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

An antique Oliver Tractor and Farm Equipment enthusiast, he owned and operated Norman D. Clark & Son Inc. in Honey Grove.

He was a member of Honey Grove United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days Association, and a member of East Waterford Fire Company. He also formerly served on the Juniata Valley Bank Board of Directors.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with the Rev. Edward Trask and the Rev. Don Walters officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery.

Friends may call from 12-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family will provide all flowers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
