B. Richard 'Dick' Shirk
LEWISTOWN - B. Richard "Dick" Shirk, 83, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of Mifflintown RR2, died at 3:50 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 1999, at the nursing home.

Born Jan. 17, 1916, in McAlisterville, he was the son of the late Boyd Elmer and Flo (Ehrenzellers) Shirk. His first wife, Nora (Boop) Shirk, whom he married Jan. 24, 1941, died in 1956. His second wife, Ella M. Yoder, whom he married Feb. 14, 1959, survives.

Also surviving are: sons, Gary A. Shirk and David B. Shirk, both of Lewistown; and two grandchildren.

He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Shirk; and two sisters, Ruth Wert in April of 1997 and Faye Bardell in May of 1998.

He was educated at the Free Spring Grammar schoolhouse in Juniata County.

He was a farmer and a farm aide, retiring in 1974. He had previously worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Selinsgrove Center in Selinsgrove.

He was a member of the Free Spring Church of the Brethren, Mifflintown, where he had taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Delaware Township Fire Co., Mifflintown RR2 and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed sports.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m Wednesday at the Free Spring Church of the Brethren, Miffintown RR2, with Pastor Terry G. Smith officiating and Pastor John Layman assisting. Interment will be in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, McAlisterville RR2.

Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to: the Free Spring Church of the Brethren, RR2, c/o Mr. William Bowman, Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to the Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Patient Activity Fund, 350 Green Avenue, Lewistown, PA 17044.

Beulah C. Shirk
LEWISTOWN - Beulah C. Shirk, 92, of 704 Valley St., Lewistown, and formerly of Port Royal RR2, died at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at her daughter's home in Lewistown.

Born May 15, 1907, in Milford Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob M. and Ella J. (Casner) Yohn. Her husband, Jerome K. Shirk, died April 2, 1992.

She is survived by: children, Mrs. Edward (Sara) Kenepp and Mrs. Thomas (Ruth Ann) Yeager, both of Lewistown, and James Y. Shirk of Port Royal RR2; brother and sister, Joseph H. Yohn, HC Mifflin, and Mrs. Kenneth (Sara) Kint, Honey Grove; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Port Royal United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Richard Burchfield and Brent Knepp officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. Saturday until the time of services. There is no evening viewing.

Donna M. Shirk
HAVERTOWN - Donna M. Shirk, 64, of Havertown, formerly of Aston and Allentown, died Monday, July 5, 1999, the Lankenau Hospital, Lower Merion Township.

Born in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Percy D. and Hazel (Smith) Ross. Her husband, Clayton L. Shirk, whom she married in 1956, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Lori A.; a son, Thomas C. Shirk; sisters, Louella Napikoski and Ann McLucas; and two granddaughters.

She graduated from Burnham High School, Burnham.

She was a homemaker, who worked as a secretary for PNC Bank for 5 years. She also helped with the pre-school program at the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. While she lived in the Burnham area, she worked as an executive secretary for Standard Steel.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Havertown for 12 years and a member of the Temple Lutheran Church for 10 years. She was very active in both churches with women's group and various volunteer activities.

She was also a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1141 West Chester Pike, Havertown, with graveside services to be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Birch Hill Cemetery in Burnham.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the church.

Elvin Daniel Shirk
RICHFIELD - Elvin Daniel Shirk, 67, of Richfield RR1 died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Penn State-Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after an extended illness.

Born April 19, 1932, at Sand Valley Road, Richfield, Juniata County, he was the son of the late John Ernest and Stella (Leitzel) Shirk. His wife, Sarah J. "Sally" (Losch) Shirk, whom he married July 28, 1956, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Gregory D. Shirk, Joppa, Md., Mrs. Ed (Susan A.) Nornhold, Richfield RR1, Amy L. Shirk, at home, and Mrs. Mick (Janice E.) Willits, Jersey Shore; brothers and sisters, Wilmer Shirk, Zelienople, Stanley Shirk, Richfield, Lydia Ferne, Princeton, N.J., Mrs. William (Eunice) Auker, Richfield, and Mrs. Lloyd (Naomi) Shellenberger and Miriam Shaffer, both of Richfield RR 2.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Shirk.

He was a 1949 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville.

He enlisted in the United States Army Dec. 9, 1952, at Harrisburg, and served as a corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged Nov. 9, 1954.

He was employed as plant supervisor at Anthracite Industries, Sunbury. Earlier, he had worked as a supervisor for Shirk Construction, Richfield, beginning in 1953. He was a member of Richfield Mennonite Church and served as a trustee and Sunday school superintendent, as well as being on the church council. In 1984, he helped found the AWANA program, and he was active in the Youth for Christ Program as a bus driver. With his daughter, he was involved in the Amy Lynn Music Ministry.

He was also a member of the NRA and the Richfield Ambulance League and Fire Company. He served as West Perry Township Auditor for more than 30 years.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Richfield Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry R. O'Connell officiating and the Rev. Walter Dick assisting. Interment will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the Liverpool American Legion Post 364, Liverpool.

Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Stowie G. Shirk
REEDSVILLE - Stowie G. Shirk, 71, of 175 Wilson St., Reedsville, died at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Hershey Medical Center.

Born April 21, 1928, in Brown Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Walter and Anna M. (Kline) Shirk. His wife, Betty M. (Huffman) Shirk, whom he married Aug. 9, 1951, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Mrs. James (Gloria) Bender and Piccola Williams, both of Lewistown, Mrs. James (Melva) Gill and Mrs. Donald (Christina) Frampton, both of Mifflintown, and Mrs. James (Nadine) Hammill, Marietta; brothers and sisters, Gilbert K. Shirk, Yeagertown, Walter E. Shirk, Sparrows Point, Md., Anna Lucille Rhodes, New York; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stowie G. Shirk Jr.; a granddaughter; two brothers and one sister.

He was employed by the Mann Edge Tool Company for 52 years, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1783, the Junction Fire Co., and the Brooklyn Fire Co.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John S. Walters officiating. Interment will be held in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana.

Friends may call from noon until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ray L. Shively
MCCLURE - Ray L. Shively, 79, of McClure RR2, died at 4:16 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.

Born May 22, 1920, in Shindle, he was a son of the late Fred and Ruth (Libby) Shively. His wife, Grace A. (Folk) Shively, survives.

Also surviving are: brother and sister, Wilfred Shively, Lancaster and Goldie Wagner, Barrville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Ann Michalski; two brothers and four sisters.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.

Earlier in life, he worked for Standard Steel, Burnham and in 1982, he retired from U.S. Steel, Levittown, after 30 years.

He was a member of St. John's Ridge Lutheran Church, McClure RR2, where he formerly served on the council. He was also a member of United Steelworkers of America, the McClure Fire Co., the Bannerville Fire Co., the Beaver Springs Ambulance Club, and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Ridge Lutheran Church, McClure RR2, with the Rev. Clyde Singh officiating. Interment will be in Black Oak Ridge Cemetery, McClure RR2.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.

James K. Shivery
MIFFLIN - James K. Shivery, 91, of HC 67, Mifflin, died at 2:55 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the Lewistown Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1907, in Yeagertown, he was the son of the late James B. and Mary (Leightley) Shivery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella (Benner) Shivery.

He is survived by a sister, Ruth A. Shivery, Valley View Terrace, Belleville.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Weaver.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre.

He was a carpenter and labor foreman at Standard Steel, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of the Holy Communion Evangelical Lutheran Church, a life member of the Lewistown Elks Lodge 663, and a life member of Yeagertown Fire Co.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Holy Communion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Main Street, Yeagertown, PA 17099.

Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Ray Shoemaker
HARRISBURG - Phillip Ray Shoemaker, 82, of Harrisburg, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the Gettysburg Hospital.

Surviving are: brother and sisters, Wilbur L. Shoemaker, Port Royal, Betty Elmer, Lewistown, and Marcella Harpster, Largo, Fla.; several nieces and a nephew.

He was a U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II.

He was a retired press operator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

He was a member of Highspire Boating Association and the National Rifle Association.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Hetrick Funeral Home, Susquehanna Township, Harrisburg. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Township.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Heart Association, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA.
