Gilbert F. Shirey
LEWISTOWN - Gilbert F. Shirey, 89, a resident of Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown, formerly of 12 Chapel Drive, Lewistown, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at the nursing home. Born Sept. 7, 1911, in Woodland, Clearfield County, he was the son of the late A.I. and Manerva (Ayers) Shirey. His wife, Thelma (Sipes) Shirey, preceded him in death. Surviving are: children, Twila Morgan, McVeytown, and Mrs. Dale D. (Virginia) Pollock, Lewistown; stepchildren, Judy Bollinger, Lewistown, Celesta Youtzy, Milroy, Marlene Stewart and Lee Gahagan, both of Burnham, Mahlon Seitz, McClure, and Paul Seitz, Duncannon; brothers and sister, Raymond Shirey and Edward Shirey, both of Lewistown, Kenneth Shirey, Merritt Island, Fla., and Mrs. John (Jane) Fabiankovick, Washington; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He was a bricklayer at Standard Steel, Burnham. He was Methodist by faith and a member of United Steelworkers of America Local 1940. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Clifford Miller officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mary T. Shirey
LEWISTOWN - Mary T. Shirey, 96, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of 600 Knepp Ave., Lewistown, died at 7:34 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the manor. Born Dec. 20, 1903, in Mifflin, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lillie Mae (Kerns) Shively. Her first husband, Earnest T. Stewart died in 1955 and her second husband, Martin Shirey, died in 1984. Surviving are: children, Mrs. John (Katherine) Hubler, 8 Montgomery Ave., Lewistown and James Stewart, Chambersburg; a stepson, Linwood Shirey, Harvard Street, Lewistown; sisters, Betty Myers, 600 Knepp Ave., Lewistown and Irene Decker, Baltimore, Md.; seven children; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Stewart; three brothers, Paul, William, and Arthur Shively; and two sisters, Martha Shively and Margaret Ridell. She was a production employee at Cluett-Peabody, Arrow Division Shirt Factory. She attended Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown and was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge, Lewistown. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Howard D. Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to: Ohesson Manor, 276 Green Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Glenn I. Shirk
MIFFLINTOWN - Glenn I. Shirk, 78, of 105 N. Fifth St., Mifflintown, died at 6:46 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 27, 1921, in Mifflintown, he was the son of the late John R. and Edna (Staley) Shirk. Surviving are: a son, Glenn I. Shirk Jr., Danville; brothers and sisters, Ray Shirk, Lewis Shirk, Esther Cisney, and Lorraine McKnight, all of Mifflintown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth L. "Bib" Renninger, on Feb. 10, 1989, and a brother, Paul L. "Mope" Shirk, on July 6, 1998. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by D.E. Smith, Inc. for many years and had worked for various other contractors. He was a member of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863 and the American Legion Post 298, both in Mifflintown and a life member of the Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Frank J. Swartz officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Juniata County Veterans Council. There will be no public viewing and family will provide all funeral flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1, Washington Avenue, Mifflintown, PA 17059. Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.

Guy L. Shirk
REEDSVILLE - Guy L. Shirk, 80, of 101 Bonnie Lane, Reedsville, died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Born Sept. 20, 1919, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late John A. Shirk and Tressie (Davidson) Shirk Taylor. His wife, Alva (Rowe) Shirk, whom he married Aug. 9, 1941, survives. Also surviving are: two sons, Guy L. Shirk II, Medina, Ohio, and David G. Shirk, Oriental, NC; a sister, Dorothy Picketts, Lewistown; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army Medical Corp. He was regional manager/picker of X-Ray Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio for 32 years, retiring in 1974. From 1974-1987, he was owner/operator of Mother Hubbard's Kitchen Center (a custom kitchen design firm), Mechanicsburg. He was a member of Yeagertown United Methodist Church, Mann Avenue, Yeagertown, where he sang with the choir and was in the men's group. He was also a member of the Oklahoma City Kiwanis Club and the Blue Juniata Barber Shop Chorus. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Yeagertown United Methodist Church, Mann Avenue, Yeagertown, with the Rev. Thomas B. Morningstar officiating. Private interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. There will be no public viewing, but family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2001 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA 17102. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Elizabeth Shirk
RICHFIELD - Mary Elizabeth Shirk, 78, a resident of The Zendt Home, Richfield, formerly of Mount Pleasant Mills RR1, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at the nursing home, where she resided since 1979. Born Dec. 3, 1921, in Richfield, she was the daughter of the late Nettie (Pyle) and Merrion S. Shirk Sr. She is survived by brothers and sisters, Lawrence E. Shirk, Eliot, Maine, Merrion S. "Jr." Shirk Jr. and Mrs. William (Dorothy A.) Musser, both of Middleburg, Mrs. Donald (Helen J.) Metzgar, Port Trevorton RR1, and Mrs. Fred (Geraldine M.) Spotts, Mount Pleasant Mills RR1; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Richard Shirk, in infancy in 1938 and Samuel Charles "Sam" Shirk on Aug. 3, 2000; and one sister, P. Mae Dorman on June 11, 2000. She was a member of the Richfield Mennonite Church, Richfield and its Ladies Sunday School Class. She loved children, car rides, and also enjoyed singing groups, especially gospel. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Richfield Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry R. O'Connell officiating. Interment will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the church. The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Hale Shoop
LEWISTOWN - Helen Hale Shoop, 93, of 602 S. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 31, 1906, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Atta (Graham) Price. Her first husband, George F. Hale, died in 1948 and her second husband, Harry H. P. Shoop, died March 3, 1990. Surviving are: a daughter, Dolores J. Britt, Lewistown; stepsons, Robert F. Shoop, Lewistown and Richard E. Shoop, Beaver Springs; half-brother and half-sister, Rush Price, Halifax and Margaret Paterson, Lewistown; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth G. Hale in 1929 and one sister. She was employed by the American Viscose Corporation in the cake converting department as a supervisor for 38 years, retiring in 1965. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, the church financial committee, and was on the administration board of the church. She was also a member of the Avisco 25 Year Club and was a tutor for the fast track program at Buchanan Elementary School. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Third and Dorcas Streets, Lewistown, with the Rev. David Schmuck and Karen McCachren officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, Third and Dorcas Streets, Lewistown, PA 17044.

Robert T. 'Bob' Shover
EAST WATERFORD - Robert T. Shover, 82, of East Waterford RR1, died at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born June 22, 1918, in Milford Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Lloyd Shover and Florence A. (Temple) Lingle. His companion of 21 years, Dorothy J. Wileman, survives. Also surviving are Mrs. Wileman's seven children, Larry Wileman and Carol Zook, both of Mifflintown, Gloria St. John, Lois Grassmyer, Susan Goshorn, all of Port Royal, Cheryl Wileman, Chambersburg, and Linda Breon, East Waterford; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by four brothers; five sisters; a daughter, Sharon K. Roush; and a grandson, Ronald Roush Jr. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver with various companies and during his retirement, he was a driver for J&D, Reedsville for the Mifflin Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863 and the American Legion Post 298, both of Mifflintown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Jack D. Twombly officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where full military honors will be conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Florence T. E. Showers
MIFFLINTOWN - Florence T. E. Showers, 89, of Mifflintown RR3, died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at her home. Born March 22, 1911, in Brickerville, Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late James and Amanda (Todd) Enck. Her husband, Dr. Lloyd W. Showers, died Jan. 16, 1987. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Boyd (Evelyn "Jake") Heath of Lancaster and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Showers, on April 5, 1952; two brothers, Ralph Enck and W. Roy Enck; and three sisters, E. Mae Enck, Helen Zwally, and Mildred Balmer. Early in life, she worked for her family's business, Enck's Ice Cream in Brickerville, making ice cream and clear toy candy. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown; the Ever Ready Sunday School Class; the Women of the ELCA; the Mifflin Chapter No. 260 Order of the Eastern Star; and the Juniata County Retired School Employees. She was a former Girl Scout leader and former member of the Homemaker's Group. She enjoyed crocheting and braiding rugs. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley. There will be no viewing. The family will provide all funeral flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 3 South Third St., Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to the Dr. Lloyd W. Showers Scholarship Fund, c/o Andrew Winder, treasurer, RR3, Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to the Boy Scouts of America, 9 Taylor Drive, Reedsville, PA 17084. The Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
