Donald L. Henderschedt
(December 31, 1943 - November 16, 2014)

Donald L. Henderschedt
The Reverend Donald L. Henderschedt, entered into eternal life with his Lord on Sunday, November 16, 2014. Married to Bernice E. Henderschedt for 49 years, they lived in Stroudsburg for the past 37 years.

He dedicated his life to the Lord and the churches he served. In 1969 he was ordained as a minister of the Lutheran Church and his service started with a five church parish; Christ United Lutheran Church in Ashland, Lavelle, Gerardville, Gordon and Kimmels, PA. He then became a pastor developer for the Division for Mission in North America starting a new congregation, Holy Love Lutheran Church in Aurora, CO. He returned to Pennsylvania serving on Northeastern PA Synod Staff and Liaison for Division for Missions doing recreational ministry at local resorts, campgrounds and ski resorts. In 1982 he was called to serve St. John's Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg where he served for 10 years and had an integral part in the development of Rainbow Trail Day Care. He then went to St. John's Lutheran Church in Scranton for three years and after that served as interim pastor for Neffs Union Church; Jordan Lutheran Church in Orefield; St. John's Lutheran Church in Jim Thorpe; and St. John's Lutheran Church in Scotrun.

He was a member of Kiwanis and P.A.T.H. board.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, James G. Henderschedt and his wife Kelly of Marlborough, CT and Cheryl Henderschedt and her husband Rick Munson of Stroudsburg; five grandchildren, Emma, Owen, Lucy and Rosie of Marlborough, CT and Nicole of Stroudsburg; two brothers, Rev. James L. Henderschedt and his wife Betty of Allentown and Rev. Dale Henderson and his wife Rosemary of Fort Wayne, IN; a brother-in-law, Glenn Butler and his wife Frieda of Evans, GA; and two nephews and three nieces.

There will be visitation with the family from 7:00 to 9:00PM on Friday, November 21, and 10:00 to 11:00AM on Saturday, November 22, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 9 North 9th St., Stroudsburg. A memorial service of praise and thanksgiving for Donald's life will begin at 11:00AM Saturday at the church with the Rev. Dody S. Siegfried officiating. Private interment will take place at the convenience of the family at Laurelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 9 North 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360; E.L.C.A. World Hunger c/o St. John's Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg; or National Parkinsons Foundation, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Eugene C. Hafler
(May 1, 1931 - January 31, 2015)

U.S. Veteran
Eugene C. Hafler, 83, of Hamilton Township, passed away Saturday evening, January 31, at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Dorothy (Phillips) Hafler with whom he shared 62 years of marriage on July 4, 2014.

Born on May 1, 1931 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Coe and Emma (Hay) Hafler and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.

Gene was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War.

He worked in maintenance for the Monroe County Housing Authority until retiring.

Gene was a member of the Pocono Lodge #780 F&AM; and the American Legion; and he was a former member of the East Stroudsburg Fire Department and Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Co.

He was also a lock smith and enjoyed fishing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jack Hafler and his wife Cindy of Elkland, Kevin Hafler of Saylorsburg and Douglas Hafler and his wife Pam of Stroudsburg; a grandson, Matthew Hafler; two step-grandchildren, Lisa Bonfandio and Eric Bird and his wife Kim; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hafler.

The memorial service will begin at 1:00PM on Wednesday, February 4, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg. Cremation was private and burial will be at a later date in Cherry Valley.

Pearl M. Field
(March 10, 1924 - January 28, 2015)

Pearl M. Morris Field, 90, of East Stroudsburg, passed away Wednesday evening, January 28, peacefully at home while under hospice care surrounded by her family.

She was born in New Bern, NC on March 10, 1924, to the late Fenner S. and Laura (Harris) Morris and lived in East Stroudsburg since 1955.

Pearl and her late husband owned and operated Field Chiropractic Clinic, where she worked as a chiropractic assistant and physical therapist until retiring in 1990.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap and the Meadow Lake Fishing Club. She loved gardening and being barefoot outside digging in the dirt. Until she became ill, Pearl enjoyed mowing her own lawn and snow blowing her sidewalks. She also had a love of all animals. Any animal who happened to come into her yard was fed and adopted.

Pearl is survived by her husband, James Toler of East Stroudsburg. Pearl and Jim were "Tarheels" and went all through school together in New Bern, NC. They reconnected on Facebook, were marriage May 19, 2013, and made many trips back and forth to North Carolina.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by a daughter, Darla Stem and her companion Bruce Samson of Stroudsburg; a son, Richard E. Field (Kathy) of East Stroudsburg; five grandchildren, Barbara J. Clark of Harpers Ferry, WV, LaLena Stirr of Canadensis, Jason Field of Shawnee-on-Delaware, Lindsey Zimmerman of Stroudsburg and Kevin Field of Boston, MA; four great grandchildren, Logan Stirr, Gabriel Stirr, Alexander Stirr, Reagan Zimmerman and a fifth grandchild due in June; a niece, Brenda Emory of New Bern, NC; a nephew, Benjamin Hall, Jr. of Roper, NC; and a step-daughter, Ilona Hicks of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Elwood S. Field on July 28, 1994; a brother, Benjamin F. Hall; a sister, Ruby Willis; and two half-sisters, Mamie Phillips and Bertha White.

Friends and family may visit from 10:00 to 11:00AM on Tuesday, February 3, at the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap; where the funeral service will begin at 11:00AM with the Rev. Sherry Blackman officiating. Private burial will be at Stroudsburg Cemetery.

Memorial remembrances may be made to AWSOM (Animal Welfare Society of Monroe), P. O. Box 13, Stroudsburg 18360; Eastern PA Animal Alliance, P. O. Box 123, Sciota, PA 18354; or the animal charity of your choice.

Barbara J. Counterman
(December 14, 1932 - January 26, 2015)

Barbara Jean (Clifton) Counterman, 82, of East Stroudsburg, passed away after a long and courageous battle with glioblastoma early Tuesday morning. She was the daughter of the late John F. Clifton and Jean Sheldon and the widow of Ken Counterman.

Barbara worked for over 25 years at the Pocono Medical Center. She was a long time member of New Life Fellowship Church and loved to travel but most of all, loved spending time with her two precious great-grandbabies, Shayla and Johnathan. She looked forward to their weekly Friday night dinner dates and traveling with them to Oregon and Disney. They were her whole world.

In addition to her two great-grandchildren, she survived by their parents Tom and Celisa Counterman of East Stroudsburg; a granddaughter Jami Lipe and her husband Tom of East Stroudsburg; a son, Thomas K of Ohio; her sisters Carolyn Lohman of East Stroudsburg, Janet Marsh of Stroudsburg and Harriet Davis of York; an uncle, Donald Clifton of Stroudsburg and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Patricia Miller.

Cremation was done at H.G. Crematory in Stroudsburg. A graveside service will be held in the springtime at Prospect Cemetery with Pastor Hughes of New Life Fellowship Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Brain Tumor Association.

Dolores "Tillie" Halterman
(June 27, 1935 - January 28, 2015)

Dolores H. "Tillie" Halterman, 79, of Stroud Township, passed away on Wednesday morning, January 28, at St. Luke's Hospice House in Bethlehem. She was the widow of Paul G. Halterman who died January 31, 2013.

Born on June 27, 1935 in East Stroudsburg, she was a daughter of the late Eugene O. and Lillian (Baker) Harrison.

She was a lifetime resident of Monroe County and served in the United States Marine Corps.

Tillie was a waitress at Arlington Diner in Stroudsburg until retiring after 35 years of service.

Surviving are a son, Paul G. Halterman, Jr. at home; a granddaughter, Holly Sue Fritz at home; and a sister, Beverly Staples of Stroudsburg. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Kaye Fritz who died November 13, 2001 and a brother, Ronald Harrison.

There will be a viewing from 1:00 to 2:00PM on Monday, February 2, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg; where the funeral service will begin at 2:00PM with the Rev. Candy LaBar officiating. Burial will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial remembrances be made to Disabled American Veterans www.dav.org.

LEILA "Mike" KOMENKO
Leila "Mike" Komenko, 88, of Cresco, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 17, 2018, at Gluco Lodge in Hamilton Township where she was a resident. She was the widow of Nicholas Komenko who died October 22, 1999.

Born on March 18, 1930 in East Stroudsburg, she was a daughter of the late Benny and Amanda (Priest) Macklin, and lived in Monroe County for most of her life. 

In her early years she worked at the former Ronson Corporation in Delaware Water Gap; and then after staying home to raise her daughter she worked in the cafeteria at Barrett Elementary School for over twenty years. Later she worked at Dreamy Acres Bed & Breakfast in Canadensis. 

Leila was a long-time member of Canadensis United Methodist Church where she was active in the "Circle of Friends" and helped with the annual Christmas cookie sale for many years. She was also a Girl Scout Leader; and volunteered with the R.S.V.P. program, Monroe County Meals on Wheels, and most recently the Nearly New Shop. 

"Mike" was a great friend and neighbor, always helping others. 

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Donna Marie Townsend and husband Robert of East Stroudsburg; sister, Elsie Beaver of East Stroudsburg; sister-in-law, Betty Komenko of Cresco; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Iva Adams, Betty Swineford, Helen Dymond, Leetta Alexander (her twin), and Gertrude Simpson; and a brother, John Macklin.

Services will be held on Friday, April 20, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg; with viewing beginning at 10:00AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00AM with Pastor Mertice Shane officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect Cemetery in East Stroudsburg. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to Canadensis United Methodist Church.
