Steven A. Black
(January 19, 1949 - November 14, 2017)

U.S. Veteran
Steven A. Black, age 68, passed away November 14, 2017, at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, PA.

He was born in Chambersburg, the son of the late Catherine and Wayne Black.

Steven is survived by his wife of 38 years; Jacquelyn; daughter, Danielle Black-Park;, son, Aaron Black and wife Traci; and twin granddaughters, Catherine and Clarissa Park. His sister, Ginger Zimmerman and husband George also survive him, along with many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; as well as dozens of children, friends of his daughter and son; who called him “dad” or “pops”. His in-laws, Abram and Gwendolyn Diehl, Frances Horton-Ratliff, Samuel Horton and wife Sandra, Christine Gossert, and Abram Diehl and wife Lisa, also survive him. He was pre-deceased by his brothers-in-law, Wallace Gossert and Arthur Ratliff..

Steven was employed by the United States Government for many years. He worked at Letterkenny Army Depot, New Cumberland Army depot and Picatinny Arsenal. After retirement, he worked part-time at the Home Depot in Stroudsburg, PA.

He served with the Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He loved to tell stories of the "Mountaintop in Alaska" and "painting trees" in Mississippi; also of the tragic loss of his beloved purple Mustang on a bridge in New Jersey while stationed there.

Steven Graduated from Penn State University in 1979 with a degree in Rehabilitation. Anyone who knows Steve was aware of his psychological banter and his profound love and knowledge of American history.

He belonged to Sports car clubs of America and loved driving in his younger years.

Steven was a God loving individual and sang with the choirs of every church he attended, Chambersburg, Saylorsburg, and East Stroudsburg United Methodist Churches. He also loved playing his guitar and doing so for all of these choirs. He was a Band parent, baseball umpire, and served as an aide for the many activities of his children. He loved his family immensely. His granddaughters were the light of his life. His daughter was his "Deedle dee" and his son was the amazing "A" the boy who could run though he never thought he would.

He admired and detested his children's many hobbies; the art work and writing that left paint, ink and paper messes everywhere; and the driving and mechanical ability that left too many cars in the yard, left a greasy mess in the garage with tools everywhere and lost his ever beloved electrical tape. No matter what, he was proud of his children's abilities and supported their efforts.

There will be no funeral at this time. Instead, we ask you to plan a wondrous family dinner with your family, as we will be doing. Family dinner and time together meant the world to Steve. In his honor say a prayer before your meal; and during dinner laugh talk and make many happy family memories. Some of our meals were so full of talking and laughter; it would take a long time to eat. Steve would want you to make your time here on earth joyous with many memories. You never know when those memories will cease.
