Lola Mae Keene-Hubert, 64, of 1120 Market St., Meadville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born in Greenwood Township Oct. 23, 1936, a daughter of John P. and Mary E. Williams Keene. She was formerly employed at Blazon of Linesville and Girard Tannery. She was of the Protestant faith. A member of the Italian Civic Club, she loved country music. Survivors include three sons, Robert D. Ransom and his wife, Mary, of East Springfield, and Marvin D. Ransom and Bryan E. Ransom and his wife, Tara, all of Conneautville; five grandchildren, Aaron, Jeremy, Margot, Zachary and Paige Ransom; a sister, Mrs. William (Pauline) Brooks of Linesville; two brothers, Bradley P. Keene and Paul L. Keene, both of Conneaut Lake; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, John Keene; and a sister, Joan Van Dusen. There are no calling hours. The graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Harmonsburg, with Pastor Abe Edwards of New Life Community Church, Fairview, officiating. Walter Ray Smail
SARASOTA, Fla. - Walter Ray Smail, 81, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Meadville, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at his residence after a period of failing health. Born in Westmoreland County March 12, 1920, he was a son of John Z. and Velma Hannah Smail. He married Marian E. Cheney March 20, 1942. She preceded him in death Sept. 26, 1972. He was employed for many years at the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad as a switchman, and he owned and operated Tamarack Tavern for several years before retiring to Sarasota in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Europe during World War II. He enjoyed his years in Florida, working in his vegetable and flower gardens. He also enjoyed his membership in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3233 and Moose Lodge 608. Survivors include two daughters, Lois Hall and her husband, Fred, of Sarasota, and Shirley Gongaware of Columbus; five grandchildren, Michael, Marty and Matthew Knopp and Jeff and Penny Teasdale; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Robert Smail. Arrangements are under the direction of the National Cremation Society, Sarasota. There will be a private graveside service in Kiser Hill Cemetery at a later date. Gertrude E. Earle
Gertrude E. Earle, 99, of Liberty Street, Meadville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at home. She was born in Linesville March 17, 1902, a daughter of George Edwin and Mertie Clark Thompson. She married Anthony Vacanti, who preceded her in death in February 1924. She later married Williston W. Earle, who preceded her in death in 1997. She was a housewife for most of her life and lived in New Jersey from 1935 until they moved to Linesville in 1974. A member of First Baptist Church, Meadville, she enjoyed crocheting and baking. Survivors include a daughter, Mertie Kibler of Edinboro; a grandson, Anthony Williams; two granddaughters, Beverly Lupo and Dolores Iannello; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Services are private and under the direction of Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home and Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville. Audrey Jean Smith
PENNDEL - Audrey Jean Smith, 45, of 255 E. Lincoln Highway, Apt. 109, Penndel, and formerly of Richmond Township, Cambridge Springs, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 6, 2001, at home. She had lived in Penndel for the past nine years. She was born in Philadelphia Sept. 7, 1955, a daughter of Samuel Norsen and Sally L. Vinnacombe Smith. She never married. A homemaker, she lived with her mother, with whom she was very close, in Penndel from 1990 until her mother's death in 1998. Survivors include two sisters, Kathi Salamone and her husband, Michael, of Penndel, and Patti Ralston and her husband, Richard, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 335 Venango Ave., Cambridge Springs. Irene McFall Gehr
TAVARES, Fla. - Irene McFall Gehr, 79, of 500 Waterman Ave., Apt. 410, Tavares, Fla., died Saturday, May 5, 2001. She was born in Cambridge Springs Oct. 23, 1921. She married James F. Gehr in 1941 in Cambridge Springs. She moved to central Florida in 1993 and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Dora, Fla. In addition to raising their daughter, she found time for a business career including cosmetology and real estate sales. At one time she owned her own beauty shop. Her philosophy of life was to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She supported her husband, an agricultural attaché assigned to American embassies in Cuba, West Africa and Venezuela, by organizing and implementing representational functions. In addition, she was active in the various embassy wives' organizations. Survivors, in addition to her husband of Mount Dora, include a daughter, Kathryn Austin of Laurel, Md., and her husband, Bryan; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Amy and Jonathon. COCHRANTON - Leona Erma Irwin, 84, of 144 S. Franklin St., Cochranton, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. She was born in Fairfield Township April 7, 1917, a daughter of Samuel James and Anna Kahler Hart. She was formerly married to William Kenneth Irwin August 1939. He preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Cochranton High School. She was a member of Mumford Chapel United Methodist Church and Crawford County Senior Citizens. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Hunt and her husband, Charles, of Greenville, and Joyce Gagnon of Burton, Ohio; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Hafer of Geneva; and a brother, Allan Hart and his wife, Betty, of Cochranton. She was preceded in death by a son, William Irwin Jr.; two sisters, Bernice Malliard and Lucille Kuehner; and a brother, William Hart. Velma M. Beardsley, 93, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, formerly of Murray Road, Meadville, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Wesbury. Born in Kerrtown, Vernon Township, June 13, 1907, she was a daughter of William F. and Myrtle B. Eastlake Grettler. She married Walter Beardsley in 1925. He preceded her in death in December 1966. She was a homemaker and a member of the Do-It-Yourself Club and the Rebekahs Lodge, of which she was a past Noble Grand. She enjoyed crocheting and having many flowers around. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer. Survivors include three daughters, Estella Spencer and her husband, Willard, of Smithville, Ohio; Doris Henegan and her husband, Clyde, and Jean Choffel and her husband, Rodney, all of Meadville; two sons, Robert Beardsley and his wife, Phyllis, of Linesville; and Edward Beardsley of Meadville; nine grandchildren, Rocky, Patty, Gary, Peggy, Thomas, Jack, Cris, Donna and Franklin; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Hamilton of Saegertown and Mary Terry of Meadville; and several nieces and nephews. Clyde Henry Moon, 86, of 1101 Return Church Road, Seneca, S.C., formerly of Linesville, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at his residence. Born Oct. 9, 1914 in Pontiac, Mich., he was a son of Arthur and Jessie Merket Moon. He was a retired automotive service manager. He was a member of Return Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy I. Moon at home; two sons, Arnold R. Moon and his wife, Mary Lynn, of Seneca; and Bruce R. Moon and his wife, Stella, of Ambridge; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Howard Moon. Mabel Stocker Wysel
Mabel Stocker Wysel, 82, of R.D. 5, Titusville, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Titusville Area Hospital, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was a resident of the Presbyterian Home since Aug. 25, 2000. Born Sept. 27, 1918, in Titusville, she was a daughter of Joseph and Josephine Gloor Schneider. She married George F. Stocker Nov. 5, 1938. He preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1976. She married Basil Wysel April 11, 1986. He preceded her in death May 22, 1992. She was a graduate of Colestock High School class of 1936 and was formerly employed as an inspector for Rural Smith Manufacturing, which later became GTE Sylvania. She retired in 1979 after 26 years of service. She loved her family, friends and reading. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and making lap robes for others. She was a member of the Chapmanville Community Church where she was active in many church activities. Survivors include four children, David Stocker and his wife, Cathy, of Austin, Texas; Judith Abrams and her husband, Gary, of Titusville; Karl Stocker and his wife, Marie, of Pinesville, La., and Barton Stocker and his wife, Judy, of Titusville; eight grandchildren, Cynthia Pettit of Titusville; Eric Abrams of Grand Valley; Brian Stocker of Austin; Leann Mamer of Dallas, Texas; Kim Newhouse and Candace Stocker, both of Pinesville; Michael Stocker of Cambridge Springs; and Tami Stocker of Cascade, Md.; five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Emma Gene (Dorothy) Kerfoot
Emma Gene (Dorothy) Kerfoot, 77, of Golfview Manor, Meadville, died Friday, May 4, 2001. Born in Andover, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1923, she was a daughter of John D. and Bess Luce Buttermore. She married Richard D. Kerfoot July 26, 1943. She worked at Meadville Medical Center and attended the Methodist church. She was lovingly referred to as "Granny" by her grandchildren as well as by many others. Survivors, in addition to her husband of 57 years, include a daughter, Lynn Altenburg and her husband, David, of Meadville; a son, Scott Kerfoot and his wife, Kathy, of Enon Valley; five grandchildren, Charlotte Pelc, Ruben and Richard Mascitti, and Kyra and Taryn Kerfoot; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Tim Kerfoot; two sisters, Josephine and Lucille; and a brother, Robert Buttermore. Edward Louis Poly
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Edward Louis Poly, 84, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was born in Frenchtown April 14, 1917, a son of Desire and Kathryn Schweitzer Poly. He married Violet (Pat) Pressler in 1942. She preceded him in death in 1991. He grew up in Cochranton, graduating from Cochranton High School in 1934. His academic excellence and natural athleticism blossomed at Michigan State Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University, where he lettered in three sports and was class president. He earned a master's degree from Pennsylvania State University and took advanced studies at the University of Pittsburgh and Gannon University, Erie. His teaching and coaching career began in Michigan at Blanchard High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and rose to the rank of chief petty officer. Following his discharge, he returned to Pennsylvania and taught at Union City High School for 2 1/2 years. He then began a long and legendary career as a teacher and coach in the Lawrence Park schools as well as the newly created Iroquois High School. He taught and coached at Lawrence Park for 17 years and at Iroquois for 12 years. One of the most successful coaches in Erie County high school football, and a beloved teacher and guidance counselor, he retired in 1977. He lived in Pompano Beach for the last 24 years. He spent summers working with children at the Lawrence Park Playground, and in 1975 created Parkers' Haven, a weekly gathering for Lawrence Park junior and senior high students. During his tenure at four high schools, he coached football, basketball, golf and track. He also enjoyed golf and bowling. He was a long-standing member of Lawrence Park Methodist Church and its choir, and also sang in the choir at the United Methodist Church of Pompano Beach. He was a musician, a humorist who graced many stages and a noted public speaker. His easy wit and constant smile inspired children of all ages to achieve, and he had a sense of fairness, love of learning and belief in every student he worked with. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Poly of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Michael Poly and his wife, Murlin, of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Neva Poly of Meadville; a brother, Lloyd (Joseph) Poly of Kissimmee, Fla.; a family friend; a sister-in-law; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Abel and Clarice Poly; and a brother, Howard. A gathering of friends and a service honoring his life will be May 12 from noon to 2 p.m. at G.R. Bailey Funeral Home, 4396 Iroquois Ave., Erie. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be limited to the immediate family. Job E. Grove, 68, of 1120 Water St., Meadville, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. He was born in Pittsburgh July 14, 1932, a son of Emerson J. and Martha Simington Grove. He was previously employed by Conoco Coal Co. of Findleyville and attended Lebanon Presbyterian Church of West Mifflin. Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Montgomery of West Mifflin; and two brothers, Emerson Grove of Lyle, Ill., and William Grove of Euclid, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Parke and Florence Weitzel. There are no calling hours. Services will be at a date to be announced. MIDDLETOWN - Catherine E. Werling, 86, of 114 Richardson Road, Middletown, and formerly of Tryonville, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Dauphin Manor Nursing Home, Harrisburg. She was born in Titusville June 24, 1914, a daughter of Claude L. and Joanna Sloan Tubbs. She married Daniel J. Werling in 1939, and he preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1987. A 1932 graduate of St. Titus School, she and her husband operated a successful dairy farm in the Tryonville area for more than 30 years. She was a former member of St. Walburga Church, Titusville. Survivors include a daughter, Carol A. Gratkowski and her husband, Robert J., of Middletown; five grandchildren, two of whom have spouses; five great-grandchildren; a cousin, Milton Akin; and several nieces and nephews. Marie A. Kristoff, 70, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, 31 Park Ave., Meadville, died there Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Born in Erie July 14, 1930, she was a daughter of John and Mary Johanna Butcher Hull. She married William Kristoff July 27, 1951. He preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1993. She was a 1948 graduate of Fort LeBoeuf High School and a 1951 graduate of the former Spencer Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed at Spencer Hospital and retired from there in 1986 as a nursing supervisor. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. A member of Spencer Hospital Alumni, she was active in the lives and activities of her children and grandchildren, especially Meadville Area Senior High School Football and Meadville Figure Skating Club; and was involved in Girl Scout Troops 52 and 108. She enjoyed quilting. Miriam Lucille Senior, 90, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since 1998, and formerly of Timbercrest Apartments, Meadville, and of Bradford, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Wesbury. She was born in Kane May 17, 1910, a daughter of Samuel and Mabyle Adams Alaskey. She married William Senior, and he preceded her in death April 7, 1990. She was of the Methodist faith and loved camping, fishing and hunting. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Gard and her husband, David, of Findley Lake, N.Y.; a son, Richard Senior and his wife, Leora, of Bloomington, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Michael Brace, Dr. Patricia Brace, Diane King, Robert Brace, Gail Percy, Tracy Galonga, Debra Senior, Mick Senior and Rose Senior; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Blakeslee of Erie; and three stepbrothers, Sam, Ronald and Gerald Alaskey, all of Johnsonburg. She was born in Ten Mile Bottom (near Oil City) May 2, 1915, a daughter of Andrew D. and Jennie Stanley Bickel. She married Leonard W. Stephens Nov. 6, 1935. He preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Cranberry High School and a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Beverly K. Houser, 58, of Park Avenue Extension, Meadville, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. Born in Meadville June 21, 1942, she was a daughter of William W. and Marguerite Anderson Phillips. She married Raymond Houser June 18, 1975. She worked at American Viscose, Talon Inc., Lafayette Taxi and Vallonia Industries. A member of Grace United Methodist Church, she enjoyed working with the Vallonia children whose gifts she truly appreciated. She loved her dogs. Survivors, in addition to her husband of 25 years, include a daughter, Lynn Crawford and her husband, Jim, of Meadville; two sons, Jeffrey Houser and his wife, Cathy, of Pittsburgh, and Steve Houser and his close friend, Dusty, of Meadville; four grandchildren, Randy and Mindy Crawford, and Kristine and Jeffrey Houser; two sisters, Barbara A. Fanter of Marion, Ohio, and Kathy Bernard of Washington; a brother, Richard Phillips and his wife, Yvonne, of Savannah, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Georgene McConnaughy. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Morris of North Meadville Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery. Harold E. Eich
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Harold E. Eich, 95, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died Monday, April 30, 2001. He was born in Meadville June 11, 1905, a son of Frank R. and Sussie Florence Braymer Eich. He was a former employee of the Ft. Lauderdale News (now the Sun-Sentinel) and The Meadville Tribune. He was a member of First Alliance Church, Ft. Lauderdale. Survivors include a son, Harold C. Eich of Ft. Lauderdale; a daughter, Marian F. Williams of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Lawrence, Howard Williams and Beverly Wyman; and three great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at American Burial and Cremation Center at Jennings Funeral Home, 1801 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Lauderdale Memorial Park.

Susan F. Feldmiller
PALM BAY, Fla. - Susan F. Feldmiller, 44, of 705 Altona St. NW., Palm Bay, Fla., died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at home. She was born in Meadville May 30, 1956, a daughter of James and Shirley Conrad Feldmiller. She moved to Melbourne Fla., in 1997 from Rochester, N.Y. She had retired as office manager for Jim Rathman Chevrolet. Survivors include her parents of Melbourne; her fiance, Don Banach; a daughter, Susan Holberton and her husband, Chad, of Palm Bay; a son, Mark Kelley of Palm Bay; a granddaughter, Haylie; and three brothers, James, Joseph and Jeffrey Feldmiller, all of Albion. She was preceded in death by a sister, Carole Bowersox. There are no calling hours. The memorial service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home Chapel, 1010 E. Charles Clark Dorchester
CONNEAUT, Ohio - Charles Clark Dorchester, 77, of Locust Drive, Conneaut, Ohio, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Carington Park, Ashtabula, Ohio, where he had been a patient for two days. A Conneaut resident for the past 26 years, he was born in Linesville Oct. 3, 1923, a son of Charles S.S. and Edna Hasson Dorchester. He was a 1941 graduate of Springfield High School and lived in the Erie and Albion area before moving to Conneaut. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was employed for more than 40 years by National Forge in Erie from which he retired in 1987. Following his retirement he was employed by Peterson Oil of Conneaut. He was presently employed by Chapin's West End Hardware of Conneaut and delivered the Star-Beacon newspaper in Conneaut. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, woodworking, fishing, attending Cleveland Indians games and eating. He was a member of Wellsburg United Methodist Church, Millcreek Post 773 of the American Legion and Moose Lodge 472 of Conneaut. Survivors include his special friend of 28 years, Phyllis M. Penfield of Conneaut; two daughters, Darlaine Fowler of Ashtabula and Leonore Dorchester of Cranesville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Dorchester of Albion and Leland Dorchester of Cochranton. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey L. Dorchester; a sister, Mabel Crom; and a brother, Harry Dorchester. The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Burial follows in Linesville Cemetery, with military rites. The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Ashtabula County or Mooseheart, both in care of Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio 44030. Eli Anekite
SAEGERTOWN - Eli Anekite, 85, of 18907 Grange Center Road, Saegertown, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born at Cass Lake, Minn., Sept. 29, 1915, a son of George and Victoria Anekite. He married Margurite Caird July 21, 1951. A U.S. Army veteran, he received the Purple Heart and was in one of the first tank divisions to reach Normandy on D-Day. He retired from Albion School District where he worked in the maintenance department and as a school bus driver. He was previously a farmer and delivered coal for his father. He was a Christian. He loved his family and enjoyed bowling, pinochle, camping and horseshoes. Survivors, in addition to his wife of Saegertown, include a son, David Brunton and his wife, Sandra, of Lyndhurst, Ohio; three grandchildren, Laurie, Gregory and Douglas; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Jennie Cedervall of Willoughby, Ohio; and a niece. Calling hours are today from noon to 2 p.m. at White-Cool Funeral Home, 1405 Main St., Conneautville. The funeral follows today at 2 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Temple Jarrell of First Church of God, Meadville, officiating. Burial will be in Venango Cemetery. John Hania
CONNEAUT LAKE - John Hania of Conneaut Lake died Sunday, April 29, 2001. He was born in Holland. Survivors include his companion, Bonnie Eidell of Conneaut Lake; six children, Sylvia Hania-McMurter of Dorchester, Canada, Patricia Hania of Toronto, Canada, Joyce Mikail of Newmarket, Canada, and Jackie Hania-Eiler, Dan Hania and Sue Hania-McBeth, all of London, Canada; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Wilhelhemina Bijkerk. There are no calling hours. The funeral will be Saturday in Forest Lawn Memorial, Dundas East, London, Ontario, Canada. Marjaye Marilyn Dean
SAEGERTOWN - Marjaye Marilyn Dean, 63, of 20881 State Highway 198, Saegertown, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Crawford County Care Center after an extended illness. She was born in Meadville July 24, 1937, a daughter of Homer J. and Margaret E. Weyman Dean. A 1957 graduate of Conneaut Valley High School, she was a former columnist for The Conneautville Courier. She was affiliated with Valley Church-United Methodist of Conneautville and Conneaut Valley Woman's Club. Survivors include her mother, Margaret E. Adkins of Saegertown; a sister, Shirley M. Dean of Conneautville; a brother, Clarence E. Dean of Birmingham, Ala.; four nephews; two nieces; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Royal L. Dean. There are no calling hours. An informal celebration of her life will be at the convenience of the family at a later date. The family suggests memorials be made to Crawford County Care Center or Quality Living Center, both of 20881 State Highway 198, Saegertown, Pa. 16433.
