Laura M. Labe
LEBANANON - Laura M. Labe 39, of 331 S. Gannon St., Lebanon, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon, of natural causes. Born March 28, 1962, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of Richard Hackenburg of Lewistown and Audrey Powers Sianes of Lewistown. Her husband, Stanley D. Labe, survives. Also surviving are: children Jacob Labe, Daniel Labe, Aaron Labe, and Lindsey Labe, at home; brothers, Richard Hackenburg, AK, and Joseph Hackenburg, Lewistown; sisters, Brenda Wagner, Harrisburg, and Caroline Hackenburg and arbara Slingling, both of Lewistown. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Rohland Funeral Home, Fifth and Cumberland streets, Lebanon, with visitation beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Beverly J. Laino
Beverly Jean Laino (nee Keemer), 67, of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Lewistown, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. Born Jan. 16, 1935, in Winfield, PA, she was raised in Lewistown and after marrying her former husband in Philadelphia, she lived in Los Angeles, Burbank and Las Vegas, before relocating to Baltimore in 1972. She was the devoted mother of Leslie Ann (Laino) Robinson, Christopher Damon Laino and Lisa Jeanne (Laino) Faast; grandmother to a very dear Jessica Starr Faast; and sister of Carol Lehman of Edgewater, MD, Craig Keemer of Reading, PA, and the late Vicki Keemer DiPinto of Philadelphia. She graduated at the top of her class from Temple University in 1955 and later worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for 25 years before retiring in 1997. She was a patron of multiple charitable organizations. She loved the theatre and broadway shows. She was a huge music lover and enjoyed everything from Bach to rock and was especially fond of the Beatles. She also enjoyed attending rock concerts with her children, including The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and The Who, so much so that her children lovingly referred to her as "Mom the Rocker." She also loved to travel, especially to England, which was a favorite destination. She enjoyed the beach, sometimes sunbathing and reading all day long. She loved her cat Suzie. Beverly was very caring and giving of others. She was always willing to help out and devoted her life to her three children, family and extended family. Martha G. Laird
YEAGERTOWN - Martha G. Laird, 84, of 105 Clover Ave., Yeagertown, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002, at William Penn-Beverly Healthcare, Lewistown. Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Mt. Carmel, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Dippery) Knouse. Her husband, William Laird, whom she married in 1941, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Samuel (Cynthia) Knorr, Yeagertown, and Mrs. John (LouAnn) Neblett, Harrisburg; sister and brother, Lora Kuppel, Yeagertown, and Carl Knouse, FL; two grandsons, Samuel Knorr III, England, Jonathan Neblett, Harrisburg, and a great-grandson, Gabriel Adams Knorr, England. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Chesley H. Laite
MOUNTAIN TOP - Rev. Chesley H. Laite, 94, of Davis Manor, Mountain Top and formerly of Lansford, died on Friday, June 14, 2002, at his residence. Born in Petley, New Foundland, Canada, he was the son of the late Absolum J. and Charlotte (Davis) Laite. His wife, Flora E. (Simms) Laite, preceded him in death in October 2001. Surviving are three sons, Murray of Lewistown, Reginald of Tarrytown, NY and Berkeley of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gordon, in 2000. He was a 1952 graduate of the University of Maine and a 1949 graduate of the Bangor Theological Seminary, Bangor, ME. He retired as a minister of the English Congregational Church, where he served as pastor of the church in Lansford for 26 years before retiring in 1973. He also served parishes in Milroy, Wapwallopen and various churches in New England. He was the former secretary of the Penn Northeast Conference of Congregational Church. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the English Congregational Church, Ridge Street, Lansford, with Rev. Dr. Wayne Benack and Rev. James Wert officiating. Interment will be in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown. A viewing will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Roche Funeral Home, 500 E. Terry L. Landis Sr.
MIFFLINTOWN - Terry L. Landis Sr., 51, of Mifflintown RR 2, died at 11:42 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at Lewistown Hospital. Born July 29, 1950 in Lewistown, he was the son of Kenneth S. Landis, Newport and Joyce (Pannebaker) Clepper, Mt. Holly Springs. As a loving father and husband, he will be deeply missed by: his wife, Leslie (Hosler) Landis, whom he married Aug. 16, 1969; his children, Terry L. Landis Jr., Mifflintown, Tammy J. Landis, Mexico, and Mrs. Jason (Crystal) Fry, Honey Grove; grandchildren, Lynn Landis, Derek Landis and Derek Miller. Also surviving are: sisters, Connie Rhoads, Newport and Molly Landis, Maze. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Sandra (Davis) Landis and his step-father, Kenneth Clepper. He worked on the deck at Carolina Freight for 10 years and then at Roadway Express. He has been self-employed for 30 years as a whitewasher. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third St., Mifflintown, with Rev. Leroy Achenbach officiating. Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery. Harold L. Lantz
Harold L. Lantz, 95, of 636 Grier St., Williamsport, formerly of Belleville, died Friday, March 15, 2002. Born Jan. 26, 1907, in Belleville, he was the son of the late William O. and Blanche (Patton) Lantz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy M. (Edward) Lantz, on Feb. 8, 1994. Surviving are: a son, James W. Lantz, Williamsport; two sisters, Faye Stutter and Charlotte Dudek, both of Belleville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He retired in 1972 from the former Avco, now Textron-Lycoming in Williamsport, following many years of service. He was a charter member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he formerly served as deacon. He also served in the National Guard. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Knight-Confer Funeral Home, 1914 Memorial Ave., Williamsport. Interment will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Ruth E. Lantzer
BROOKVILLE - Ruth E. Lantzer, of Brookville and formerly of State College, Hollidaysburg and Mont Alto, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Brookville Hospital, Brookville. She is survived by a sister, Helen Lantzer of Rural Mifflintown. Her funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Gerald K. Lash
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC - Gerald K. Lash, 63, of Hilton Head Plantation died Thursday at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics. Born Feb. 15, 1939, in Burnham, he was a son of the late Edith Ayers Lash and Lewis Lash. He moved to Hilton Head Island in June 1994 from Ellicott City, MD. Surviving are his wife, Susan Thompson Lash; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Holly Schmidt Lash of Ellicott, MD; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles L. and Louise Lash of Newmansville; a sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne Lash and John Wertz of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Frances Thompson of Lewistown. He received bachelors and masters degrees from George Washington University. He retired as executive vice president of E.I. Kane Inc., Baltimore, in 1995. He was a certified public accountant with Pat Carey on Hilton Head Island. He was an active member and treasurer of St. Andrew by-the-Sea United Methodist Church. He was also active with the Boys and Girls Club and Second Helping, both on Hilton Head Island, and was the past president of Maryland Motor Truck. He served on the board of the Country Club of Hilton Head. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew by-the-Sea United Methodist Church, with Rev. Willie Teague officiating. Lloyd E. Latchford
BELLEFONTE - Lloyd E. Latchford, 55, of 743B Willow Bank St., Bellefonte, died Sunday Sept. 15, 2002 at Holy Spirit Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1947, in Newport, he is a son of the late Harvey and Elva Latchford. His wife, Dorothea (Jones) Latchford, survives. Also surviving are: six children, Lloyd E. Latchford Jr., Granite City, IL, Helen Latchford, Granite City, IL, Tracy Ingram, Hollidaysburg, Becky Jo Latchford and Scott A. Latchford, both at home, John D. Latchford, McClure; four brothers and two sisters; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. He was a truck driver. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of City Hook & Ladder, Brooklyn Hose Co., and the American Legion Post #90. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Cemetery with the Rev. Jacob T. G. Russell Laughlin
MCVEYTOWN - G. Russell Laughlin, 80, formerly of McVeytown, died at 3:21 a.m. Saturday, April, 20, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 27, 1922, in McVeytown, he was the son of the late George Laughlin and Lucretia (Pennypacker) Laughlin. His wife, Pearl (Moist) Laughlin, preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2000. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Ronald (Sharon) Grassmyer, Lewistown, Gary R. Laughlin, Hummelstown, Randy Laughlin, Lewistown, and Roger Laughlin, McVeytown; brothers and sisters, Jessie Witsel, Lakeland, FL, and John Laughlin, Poland, OH; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Dunmire, and a brother, Earl Laughlin. He was a forktruck operator for New Holland for 27 years before retiring in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Normandy and Northern France and Rhindland. He received a Bronze Star Victory Medal. He was a member of Spring Run Church of The Brethren. Catherine E. 'Dolly' Lauver
MARIANVILLE - Catherine E. "Dolly" Lauver, 84, of Snyder Memorial Nursing Home, Marianville and formerly of South Wayne Street, Lewistown, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the nursing home. Born Dec. 14, 1916, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Verdi (Bingaman) Stimley. Her husband, Brooks B. Lauver, preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1970. She is the last of her immediate family having been preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Stimley. She was employed at American Viscose Corporation. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Kari Swigart officiating. Henry I. Lauver
CAMP HILL - Henry I. Lauver, 73, of Camp Hill, died at 12:38 am Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at his home. Born February 23, 1928 in Mifflintown, he was the son of Mary F. (Henry) Lauver of Moravian Manor, Lititz and the late Albert J. Lauver. His wife, Edna (Brackbill) Lauver, whom he married May 19, 1950, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Teresa Purdue, Lititz and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald L. Lauver. He was a 1947 graduate of Juniata Joint High School and a graduate of Thompson Business College, York. He served in the United States Navy. He began his work career as a deliveryman for Beaver Bread Company, Burnham. From 1954 to 1958, he was the owner of Lauver's Semi-Self Service Grocery Store in Mifflintown. He then became a salesman for Sunshine Biscuits and later for Schwartz-Hagerty, retiring in 1993. He currently worked part-time for Advantage ESM, Harrisburg. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, Union Lodge #324 F&AM, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Valley Forest 88, Mechanicsburg American Legion and the Steelton Moose. He was a former member of the VFW in Mechanicsburg and Etters. He enjoyed dancing and listening to country western music. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. J. Stewart Hardy officiating. Interment will be in the Church Columbarium. MIFFLINTOWN - Alberta N. Leach, 91, widow of Marvin R. Leach, of Thompsontown, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR 1. Surviving are children, Albert R. "Son" Leach, Arlene L. Weiand, and Nancy A. Shadel, all of Thompsontown, Harold L. Leach, Thompsontown RR 2, and Betty Jean Swartz, Port Royal RR 1; 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth E. Leach and two sisters, Elizabeth Bishop and Mary Good. Services will be at 11 am Tuesday at Centre Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Thompsontown Lutheran Cemetery. LEWISTOWN - Lilly M. Leeper, 90, of 121 Stine Dr., Lewistown, died at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at her residence. Born Aug. 6, 1911, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Rosa (Bailor) Arentz. Her husband, J. Ivan Leeper, preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1999. Surviving are: children, Shirley Ann Tate, Lewistown, Mrs. William (Melissa) Ritter, Indiana, and John Leeper, Burnham; a sister, Lois Hower, Lewistown, and a brother, Harry Arentz, Lewistown; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother and a granddaughter. Early in life she worked at American Viscoe and Kish Park. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lewistown, Pensioner Club, Golden Age Club, Railroad Gang at the Lewistown Train Station, and spent 10 years as a Girl Scout leader and was also a Cub Scout leader. Garnetta "Joyce" LeFevre
Garnetta "Joyce" LeFevre, 66, formerly of Lewistown, died Friday, March 1, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Harry and Loretta Weaver. Her husband, Frederick L. LeFevre, preceded her in death. Surviving are: three daughters, Lorma Carson and Pamela Harlon, both of Elberton, and Tonia York, Anderson, SC, six sons, James LeFevre and Mark LeFevre, both of Elberton, William Lefevre, Clayton, Mike LeFevre and Joe LeFevre, both of Yeagertown, and Fred LeFevre, McClure; two sisters, Shirley Moore, Anniston, AL, and Annabel Deaver, Lewistown; 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jodi L. LeFevre. She was a homemaker and a resident of Camp Harmony for the past 10 years. Her funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Burnham Church of the Nazarene, Freedom Ave., Burnham.

Jean LeGuen
REEDSVILLE - Jean LeGuen of 81 Marlick Ave., Reedsville, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 4, 1920, in New York City, NY, he was the son of Jean and Sylvie (Malgorn) LeGuen. His wife, Marie T. (LeBlanche) LeGuen, whom he married Sept. 6, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: children, Sylvie Anne LeGuen, Sarasota, FL, Jacqueline Marie LeGuen, Reedsville, Jean Paul LeGuen, Lewistown, Michel Jean LeGuen, Reedsville, Colette Anne (LeGuen) Goldberg, Lebanon; and a grandson, Andrew LeGuen. He worked as a supervisor at Fisher Electronic during most of his career, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed traveling, reading and many other hobbies. He proudly served in the French Navy during World War II. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park Cemetery. Edna Belle Lehman
MIFFLIN - Edna Belle Lehman, 88, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin, and formerly of Tuscarora, Turbett Township, Juniata County, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the village. Born Feb. 9, 1914, in Turbett Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Annie (Zeigler) Lehman. She is survived by a sister, Ethel Whiteman, Lewistown, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Dolin, Mabel Hockenberry, Alverta Moore, and three brothers, Nevin Lehman, James Lehman, and Arthur "Pete" Lehman. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the New Church Hill Cemetery, RR2, Port Royal, with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. There will be no viewing. Lucy Wilson Buck Lehman
PORT ROYAL - Lucy Wilson Buck Lehman, 82, formerly of RR #2 Port Royal, died at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin. Born Feb. 3, 1920, in Wellston, OH, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Harry W. and Ann (Mayer) Buck. Her husband, Elkanah E. "Ken" Lehman, whom she married June 12, 1948, survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one sister, Dr. Margaret Catherine Buck, Mankato, MN. She was educated in the Minneapolis public schools. She was a graduate of McAlister College, St. Paul, MN. and attended Northwestern University School of Speech and Penn State University. During WWII she had served with the Red Cross in Europe. She began her teaching career in Atwater, MN, and St. Cloud, MN, where she taught for four years before coming to Juniata County and starting her distinguished teaching career that spanned from 1947 until her retirement in 1980. During her tenure with the Juniata County School District, she taught Spanish, French, English and Speech. She had served as the English Department supervisor for the school district from 1969 until 1980. Mrs. Lehman will be most remembered for her efforts of directing many plays and musicals at Juniata High School. She was a member of Port Royal Presbyterian Church and its Victory Sunday school class. She was the past president and member of the Mifflintown Women's Civic Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Port Royal Literary Guild, Juniata County Historical Society, Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, Lancaster, Lancaster International Friendship Force. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. James Cranston officiating. Burial will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Robert N. Lehman Sr.
VAN DYKE - Robert N. Lehman Sr., 65, of Van Dyke (RR3 Port Royal) died at 11:42 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital. Born June 25, 1936, in Turbett Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Nevin and Margaret Belle (Dolin) Lehman. His wife, Ruby Mae (Leeper) Lehman, whom he married on March 1, 1958, survives. Also surviving are: two sons, Edward N. Lehman, Carolina Beach, NC and Robert N. Lehman Jr., Shermansdale; three brothers and one sister, George Lehman and John Lehman, RR3 Port Royal, Jerry Lehman, RR2 Mifflintown and Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Gilliland, Mifflintown; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry M. Lehman, on May 22, 1988. He was a retired supervisor, having worked for Capital Products, Mechanicsburg, and a member of Millerstown Moose Lodge 925. Clarence E. Leister
MIFFLIN - Clarence E. Leister, 90, of Mifflin, died at 6 p.m. Sunday Dec. 22, 2002 at University Park Nursing Home, State College. Born Nov. 26, 1912, in Fermanagh Township, he was the son of the late Ammon S. and Maud P. (Shaffer) Leister. His wife, Beulah (Showers) Leister, whom he married Oct. 8, 1945, preceded him in death Sept. 3, 1991. Surviving are: two sons, Samuel J. Leister and wife Linda, RR3 Mifflintown, and Thomas E. Leister, Mifflin; a sister, Dorothy Roberts, Newport Richey, FL; three granddaughters, Christie Holderman, Mifflintown, Stacie Kint, Ayer, MA, and Bethanie Leister, Mifflintown; and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Leister and a sister, Cora "Corey" Ford. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown where he had served as Sunday school superintendent. He was also a member of Union Lodge #342 F&AM, Mifflintown. He was a graduate of Mifflintown High School. He retired from the United States Postal Service, Harrisburg in 1976 where he had served on the railway mail service between New York and Pittsburgh. In earlier life, he worked for the A&P Grocery Store, Mifflintown. He was a World War II United States Army veteran having attained the rank of sergeant and he served in the Pacific Theater. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Messiah Lutheran Church, corner of Washington Ave. and Third St., Mifflintown with Rev. Terry Smith officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown where the flag will be presented by the Juniata County Veterans Council. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Messiah Lutheran Church, 3 South Third St., Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to Alzheimers Assoc., 2001 North Front St., Building #2, Suite 321, Harrisburg, PA 17102. The Mifflintown Chapel of the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown is in charge of arrangements.

RICHFIELD - John Albert Leitzel, 76, of RR1, Richfield, West Perry Township, Snyder County, entered into eternal rest at 4:45 a.m., Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home following an illness of the past four months. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Richfield Mennonite Church with Rev. Jerry R. O'Connell officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery. A viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the church.
