Mildred "Sis" Garrison, 91, of Waynesburg, formerly of Nemacolin, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg. She was born January 4, 1907, in Ronco, Fayette County, a daughter of Vernon and Addie Silman Grubbs. Mrs. Garrison had worked at the former Nemacolin Supply Co., the Nemacolin Theater and the Nemacolin Post Office. On December 14, 1927, she married Albert S. Garrison, who died July 24, 1975. Surviving are three sisters, Catherine Grubbs of Leesburg, Va., Ruth Stevulak of Carmichaels and Evelyn Grubbs of Rices Landing; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Ray Grubbs; and five sisters, Lyndall West, Ella "Sue" Mason, Mamie McClarren, Ethel Dey and Helen Nopwalsky.

Olive J. Mayer

Olive J. Mayer, 79, of Richfield Township, Ohio, formerly of Nemacolin, died at 6 p.m. Friday, August 14, 1998, in Falling Waters Health Care Center, Strongsville, Ohio. She was born December 22, 1918, in Ronco, a daughter of John and Rachel Fata Polish. Mrs. Mayer had been a resident of Nemacolin since 1941, where she was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. On August 23, 1941, she married Louis Mayer, who died August 23, 1977. Surviving are two sons, John R. Mayer of Richfield Township and Barry E. Mayer of Fairview Park, Ohio; three grandchildren, Pamela Mrugacz, Kinberly Kessler and John E. Mayer; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Polish of Arizona and Louis Polish of Nevada; two sisters, Eleanor DeLuca of Crucible and Amelia Venicasa of Masontown; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Mike Polish; a sister, Ida Ann Clearage; a half-brother, Joe Polish; and a half-sister, Rose Pulice.

Louis Nagy, 73, of Burgettstown, died Sunday, August 16, 1998, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born February 8, 1925, in Studa, a son of John and Mary Wargo Nagy. Mr. Nagy was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Burgettstown; a member of Burgettstown Council 3440, Knights of Columbus; and a fourth-degree member of the Bishop Boyle Assembly 0922, Canonsburg. He retired from Weirton Steel Corp., where he worked as a pipefitter for 34 years. Surviving are six sisters, Bertha Adams and Helen Daudet, both of Avella, Molly Kluczkowski and Irene Laudato, both of Pittsburgh, Ethel Blair of Dayton, Ohio, and Margaret Chicovic of Burgettstown. Deceased are his wife, Irene Yadrick Nagy, who died November 12, 1994; and four brothers, John, Zollie, Billie and Joseph.

Lena M. Rhodes, 85, of Toronto, Ohio, formerly of Washington, died Saturday, August 15, 1998, in Akron City Hospital, Akron, Ohio. She was born July 25, 1913, in Arden, a daughter of Antonio and Pauline Ramona Schievenin. She was a member of the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, Toronto, and its Catholic Womens Club. Mrs. Rhodes was retired from the former Hub Department Store in Steubenville, Ohio. Surviving are a sister, Constance Martin of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are her husband, Ross Rhodes, who died in 1987; a son, Richard E. Rhodes, who died August 25, 1997; three sisters, Mary Raviora, Annie Cox and Elsie Gorby; a grandson and a granddaughter.

Patricia Slogan-Tomsic of Scott Township died Saturday, August 15, 1998. Surviving are her husband, Frank C. Tomsic; two sons, Michael C. and Matthew C. Slogan; a daughter, Sandra McCann; 13 grandchildren; a brother, James Carles; and a sister, Judy Carles. Deceased are her parents, Roland and Alice Hurley Carles.

T. Paul Tissot Jr.
U.S. Navy veteran retired from RCA
T. Paul Tissot Jr., 78, of Cherry Hill, N.J., died Friday, August 14, 1998, in Silver Care Center, Cherry Hill. He was born April 8, 1920, in San Francisco, Calif. He was a resident of Cherry Hill for 41 years and a member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church in Cherry Hill. Mr. Tissot served as a radio technician in the U.S. Navy during World War II and taught electronics at the U.S. Navy Electronics School in Treasure Island, Calif. He was a 1949 graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor of science degree. He worked at Dumont TV in Edison, N.J., designing transformers and electric circuitry. He later began working for RCA in the early 1950s as an electronics engineer. He designed high powered radar transmitters and submarine radar systems as part of the Instrumentation Radar Support Program. He retired in 1987. Mr. Tissot was a ham radio operator and a member of the American Radio Relay League. He also enjoyed golfing. Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Natalie DiMuzio Tissot; two sons, Stephen of Newark, Del., and Anthony of Morgan Hill, Calif.; two daughters, Janice Esposito of Marlton, N.J., and JeanMarie Tissot McLaughlin of Brigantine, N.J.; a sister, Yvonne Brooke of Studio City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Marlayne, is deceased.

Helen Lydia Allison
Washington woman was 101
Helen Lydia Allison, 101, of Virginia Via, Washington, died Sunday, August 16, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 6, 1897, in Tunnelton, a daughter of Samuel J. and Lelila Clawson Duncan. Mrs. Allison was a homemaker. She was a member of West Washington Methodist Church for more than 55 years. She was a former member of the ladies auxiliary of Hawkins Post 927, Veterans of Foreign Wars. On February 6, 1918, in Greensburg, she married Arthur L. Allison, who died November 21, 1970. Surviving are one son, Ralph Arthur Allison of Washington, with whom she made her home; one granddaughter, Sharon Clutter of Washington; and one great-grandson, Michael Clutter of Washington. Deceased are three brothers; and five sisters.

Sandie Penvose Greene

Sandie Penvose Greene, 45, of Lyons Street, Houston, died Monday, August 17, 1998, in her home, following a lengthy illness. She was born May 3, 1953, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Mary Ann Swamp Penvose of Meadow Lands and the late Norman Edward Penvose. Mrs. Greene was the first female race announcer for a parimutuel harness track and had been employed by Ladbroke at the Meadows as an in-house track announcer. On June 21, 1981, she married Corwyn Greene, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Ashley Greene, and a son, Ryan Greene, both at home; and a sister, Bonnie Frameli of Rices Landing.

Michael L. Heath
Washington native stationed in Germany
Michael L. Heath, 22, stationed in Nerberg, Germany, formerly of Alabama, died Monday, August 17, 1998, of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born July 13, 1976, in Washington, a son of Gary L. Heath of the state of Washington and Patricia Statler Heath of Cameron, W.Va. Mr. Heath was Protestant. He was in the U.S. Army on active duty in Germany. Surviving are his wife, Bianca Heath; two daughters, Janine and Denise, both at home in Germany; his maternal grandmother, Marion Statler of Washington; a sister, Michelle Heath of Frisco City, Ala; a half-brother, Zachary Heath of Cameron; a niece and a nephew and several aunts and uncles. Deceased are his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Heath; and maternal grandfather, James Statler.

Margaret A. King, 85, of 943 Park Street, Meadowpark Manor, Calif., formerly of Denbo, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born August 14, 1913, in Newell, a daughter of Samuel and Martha Corsin Warrick. Surviving are 11 children, Bertha J. Krepka of Largo, Fla., Robert Revell and Andrew Warrick, both of Pittsburgh, Harry King of Daisytown, Bruce King of Centerville, Ernest King, Elma (Boots) Bastian and Betty Hlebik, all of Denbo, Wanetta Duda of New Salem, Bernice Shimp of Washington and Priscilla Scherba of Imperial; a sister, Elma Lascher of Mars; 28 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Deceased are her husband, Ernest Victor King, who died January 19, 1984; three brothers and two sisters.

Helen J. Jalosky Kosa, 70, of Fourth Street, Monongahela, died Sunday, August 16, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born February 8, 1928, in Gibson, a daughter of Frank and Mary Winkowski Jalosky. Mrs. Kosa was a homemaker and a member of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, Monongahela. She and her husband enjoyed dancing. On June 13, 1955, she married Walter C. Kosa, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Daniel J. Kosa of Kenosha, Wis., and Karl J. Kosa of Monongahela; two daughters, Karen Orrik of Alexandria, Va., and Alice M. Anthony of Monongahela; a brother, Andrew Jalosky of Oil City; two sisters, Clara Josephites of Bentleyville and Mary Ann Bellin of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren, Jennifer Kelly, Jessica, Ashley and Adam Kosa and Fawn and Jerrod Anthony. Deceased are five brothers and a sister.

Alexander Liggett

Alexander Raymond Liggett, 82, of Henderson Avenue, Washington, formerly of Independence and West Alexander, died Monday, August 17, 1998, in his home. He was born February 28, 1916, in Washington County, a son of Ray and Margaret Liggett. Mr. Liggett was retired from American Bridge Steel Company in Pittsburgh. He was a Presbyterian. Surviving are two sons, Frances "Brother" Liggett of Eighty Four and Larry B. Liggett of Claysville; eight daughters, Mrs. Jim E'Allesandra, Karen Rush and Mrs. Ed Amon, all of Washington, and Norma Rubin and Mrs. Jerry Edmond, both of Titusville, Fla.; one brother, John "Jack" Liggett of Canonsburg; four sisters, Virginia Liggett, Mrs. Josephine "Josy" Craig of Washington, Gladys Rohm and Clara Frye; 35 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Deceased are his wife, Roxie Winters Liggett, in 1998; one daughter, Katherine Liggett, in 1962; five brothers, Ralph, Frederick, Ashley, Sam and Abner "Jay" Liggett; four sisters, Anna Tilton, Myrtle Waugaman, Hilda Scott and Nora Huston.

Annie Markovich
Muse homemaker
Annie Markovich, 94, of Muse, died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 1998, in Horizon Health Care Center, Canonsburg. She was born June 29, 1904, in Austria, a daughter of John and Josephine Majan. A homemaker, Mrs. Markovich lived most of her life in Muse. She was Catholic and a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union Branch 567. She was married to Steve Markovich, who died March 27, 1972. Surviving are two sons, Pete Markovich of Muse and Steve Marks of Orange Grove, Calif.; four grandchildren, Larry and Terry Markovich and Louise Ann and Steve Marks Jr.; six great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew. Mrs. Markovich was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are two sisters, Julia Zalac and Mary Dubravech.

Scott Lowell Newton

Scott Lowell Newton, 37, of Owings Mills, Md., died Sunday, August 16, 1998, in Baltimore, Md., of cancer. He was born February 19, 1961, in Menominee, Mich., a son of Charles R. Newton of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara J. Long of Washington. Mr. Newton was a 1979 graduate of Sprayberry High School and attended La Grange College in 1980-81. He was employed as a property manager with Park America Inc. for eight years and was a member of the National Association of Certified Natural Health Professionals. He was Christian. Surviving are three brothers, Lon D. Newton of Tampa, Fla., Bradley A. Newton of Carmichaels and Eric C. Newton of Washington. Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, August 21, at the Covenant Life Fellowship, 55 Point View Drive, Washington.

Sonia Papavasilis
Canonsburg resident born in Greece
Sonia Papavasilis, 80, of 310 Spruce Street, Canonsburg, died Monday, August 17, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. She was born November 3, 1917, in Limnos, Greece, a daughter of Peter and Lemonia Zervos. Mrs. Papavasilis was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Canonsburg, and the Ladies Philopthocos group of the church. Surviving are a daughter, Koula Loutsion of Canonsburg; a sister in South Africa; one grandson, George Loutsion; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, John Papavasilis, who died May 30, 1958; and two sisters.

Charlotte Zeletski
Member of Transfiguration Church
Charlotte Zeletski, 87, formerly of Monongahela, died Saturday, August 15, 1998, in Mitchell Manor, Clairton. She was born June 24, 1911, in Shire Oaks, a daughter of Walter and Josephine Nering Zeletski. Miss Zeletski was a member of Transfiguration Church, Monongahela, and was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are two sisters, Jane Zeletski and Mary Elizabeth Kirsacko; and two brothers, Andrew Zeletski and Joseph Zeletski. A funeral liturgy was celebrated Monday, August 17, at Transfiguration Church. L.M. Frye Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

William S. Zoric
WWII veteran retired from Waynesburg feed mill
William S. Zoric, 80, of Holbrook R.D.1, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, August 17, 1998, at home, following an 18-month illness. He was born December 17, 1917, in Franklin Township, Greene County, a son of William S. Sr. and Mary Ferguson Zoric. Mr. Zoric was Protestant and attended Holbrook Christian Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army, Company K, 110th Infantry; and was involved in campaigns in Normandy, northern France, South France, Rhineland and Andrennes. Mr. Zoric worked for Reed Engineering, and later at the feed mill with Waynesburg Milling, from which he retired in 1980. He was a farmer. He raised livestock and horses. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mills Zoric, whom he married March 23, 1946; two sons, Mike Zoric of Peters Township and Steve Zoric of Fredericksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Michelle, Brett, Sarah and Mary Zoric; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Flo Staggers.

James L. Brooks Jr.
Mt. Morris doctor was World War II veteran
James L. Brooks Jr., 81, of Mt. Morris, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 1998, at the home of his son, James, in Belle Vernon. He was born December 7, 1916, in Templeton, a son of James L. and Dovie Bargerstock Brooks Sr. Mr. Brooks spent his early life in Templeton, moving to Mt. Morris in 1946. He was a member and a trustee of Mt. Morris United Methodist Church, where he had taught youth Sunday school class and later taught adult Sunday school class. He was a 1935 graduate of Kittanning High School, a 1939 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and a 1943 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Mr. Brooks was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, having served as a battalion surgeon with the 39th infantry 9th Division. Following his discharge in 1946, he opened a private practice in Mt. Morris, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, which honored him for 50 years of service, a member of the American Medical Society, a member of the American College of Family Practitioners and a member of Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 F. & AM and was honored in 1996 as Masonic Man of the Year. In 1994, Dunkard Grange honored him as Citizen of the Year. Mr. Brooks enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Hauger Brooks, whom he married June 18, 1943; three sons, Dr. James L. Brooks III of Belle Vernon, Daniel E. Brooks of New Braunfels, Texas, and William J. Brooks of Waynesburg; four grandchildren, Wendy Erhardt, Jill Griffith, Julie Brooks and Debra Brooks; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, June Hartman of Pittsburgh. Deceased are a brother, Bobby Brooks; and a sister, Helen Brooks.

Irene W. Burgess, 81, of Waynesburg R.D. 4, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. Dolores L. Demeter, 69, of 13 Grant Avenue, Rabe Manor, Carroll Township, formerly of Bentleyville, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Mon Valley Hospital, Inc., following a lengthy illness. She was born November 13, 1930, in Charleroi, a daughter of Jennie M. Kumper Ramoski of Pittsburgh and the late Wallace Ramoski Sr. Mrs. Demeter was a 1948 graduate of Charleroi High School. She was employed as a beautician with the former LaRose's Salon in Monessen for many years and was also employed as a sales clerk for J. C. Penney Co. in Washington. Mrs. Demeter was a member of Ave Maria Roman Catholic Church in Bentleyville, and Our Lady of the Valley Roman Catholic in Donora. Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Donald L. Demeter; a son, Jason L. Demeter of Marianna; a daughter, Laura Kubovcik of Bentleyville; and two grandchildren, Kyle Kubovcik and Austin Demeter. Deceased is a brother, Wallace Ramoski Jr.

R. Kenneth Gessler

R. Kenneth Gessler, 86, of 116 Trotters Court, Venetia, formerly of DeMar Boulevard, Canonsburg, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Manor Care, Peters Township. Mr. Gessler was born April 21, 1912, in Canonsburg, a son of Frank and Theresa Brockner Gessler. A lifelong Canonsburg area resident, Mr. Gessler was a member of St. Benedict the Abbott Church of McMurray, the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Canonsburg, and the Loyal Order of Moose of Canonsburg. Prior to retirement he was a self-employed public accountant. On November 22, 1952, he married Amelia Borrelli Gessler, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Kenneth Gessler of Petaluma, Calif., Timothy Gessler of Canonsburg and Vincent Racioppi of Houston; three daughters, Roberta Gessler of Canonsburg, Kathleen Dasta of Bellingham, Wash., and Terry Hart of Venetia; four brothers, Frank Gessler of Washington, Carl Gessler of Boynton Beach, Fla., Herb Gessler of Lawrence and Ray Gessler of Ohatchee, Ala.; three sisters, Lillian Gessler of Canonsburg, Julia Kimes of Carmichaels and Lois Frank of Liberty, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, William and Daniel Gessler; and a sister, Virginia Gessler.

Pete Kapustynski
Played accordion in Bobby Vinton Band
Pete Kapustynski, 70, of 160 Locust Avenue, Canonsburg, died at 12:07 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospital - Canonsburg. He was born June 16, 1928, in Imperial, a son of John and Eva Roman Kapustynski. Mr. Kapustynski was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Canonsburg, where he resided for the past 40 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Kapustynski played the accordion in the Bobby Vinton Band in the 1950s. He was a modler at Canonsburg Pottery for 25 years and he also worked as a winder's helper at McGraw-Edison for 20 years. After retirement, he worked part-time for Servicemaster in Canonsburg. On October 28, 1963, he married Ruth Webb who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Peter Charles Kapustynski of Pittsburgh, and Kevin John Kapustynski of Canonsburg; a daughter, Leslee Ann Kapustynski of Canonsburg; a stepdaughter, Candi Dicks of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Nick Kapustynski of Canonsburg; and four sisters, Katherine Zuleba of Avella, Pearl DeFelice of Burgettstown, Eva Ballard of Baltimore, Md., and Sophie Braddock of Canonsburg; Deceased are two brothers, Mike and John Kapustynski; four sisters, Olga Shvdoff, Anna Stiffler, Nancy Zelenko and Tillie Koraido

Robert Lee Strogish
Robert Lee Strogish, newborn son of Ann Strogish Glunt of Washington, died Saturday, August 15, 1998, in Washington Hospital. Surviving in addition to his mother, are two sisters, Ashley and Carolyn Glunt both at home; a brother, Nathan Glunt at home; maternal grandmother, Susan Strogish of Canonsburg; and several aunts, and uncles. Deceased is a maternal grandfather, William Strogish. Services and interment were private and held at the convenience of the family.
