JOHN L. SPICHER
John Lewis “Sonny” Spicher, 69, of Liverpool RR 2, Susquehanna Twp., Juniata County, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, in Sunbury Community Hospital.

He was born June 29, 1934 in Perry County, rural Millerstown, to the late Lloyd Luther and Anna Mae (Herrold) Spicher.

He retired in April 2001 after 34 years as an assemblyman with ASF Keystone Railway and also had worked for Kerstetter and Teats Masonry, Liverpool, as a block layer and other construction companies, including Hempt Bros., Camp Hill; educated at the former Eden Grammar School, Susquehanna Twp.; a driver for Mennonite people; a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ of Verdilla, Selinsgrove RR 3, International Brotherhood of Teamsters-Chauffeurs-Warehousemen and Helpers of American, Local 776, Harrisburg, and Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1173, Selinsgrove; and an avid race fan, both NASCAR and local racing, enjoyed public sales, yard work and flowers, making scrapbooks and collecting soda cans for recycling.

Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Carol J. Shaffer Spicher; three sons, John P. of Selinsgrove, James L. of Mifflintown and Douglas E. of Lewistown; two brothers, Harold of Selinsgrove and Kenneth of Shamokin Dam; four sisters, Kathryn Ferry and Rose Smith, both of Port Trevorton RR 1, Bertha Jenkins of rural Mifflinburg and Linda Maust of Selinsgrove; a sister-in-law, Anne Berger of Selinsgrove; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry, who died in November of 1989, and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Kay Spicher, who died in May of 2001.

Services were held Sept. 10 in his church with the Rev. Alice M. Pawling officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Verdilla.

Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, handled arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

ARLENE M. SHEARER
Arlene Mae Shearer, 79, of Perdix died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 in Stonebridge Health and Rehab Center, Duncannon.

She was an employee of the former Resistance Products, Harrisburg, and the former Van’s Restaurant, Enola.

She was the widow of Stanley V. Shearer Sr.

Surviving are a daughter, Cindy L. Mullen, and a son, Stanley V. Jr., both of Duncannon; three sisters, Sara “Lib” Myers of Mechanicsburg, Mary Sloop of Carlisle and Dorothy Friese of Marysville; several half- and stepbrothers and sisters; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 13 in Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville. Burial was in Perry Heights Cemetery, Marysville.

JOSEPH E. TROSTLE
Joseph E. Trostle, 93, of Loysville died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 in Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 21, 1910 at Loysville RR 1 to the late John and Blanch (Bailor) Trostle.

He was a retired farmer and livestock dealer; a 1931 graduate of the former Landisburg High School; a member of Lebanon United Church of Christ, Loysville, a 66-year member of Adams Lodge 319, F&AM, New Bloomfield, Landisburg Ambulance Club and Central Pennsylvania Houndsmen’s Club; and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and woodworking.

He was the widower of Lenore M. Morrow Trostle.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sept. 15 in Lebanon United Church of Christ, Loysville, with the Rev. E. Levain Fouse officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery, Loysville.

Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, handled arrangements.

ELSIE BIXLER
Elsie Faxon Bixler, 96, of Camden, Maine died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at home.

She was born May 23, 1908 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

She and her husband formerly lived on a farm in Perry County where they raised turkeys and processed them to sell to what was left of the “carriage trade” in New York City during the Depression.

She was the widow of Alvin P. Bixler, who died in 1976.

Surviving are a son, Harris “Pete” of Northport, Maine; two granddaughters, Sarah of Arlington, Mass., and Alleson of Lincolnville; and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Mary “Lizzie” and India Jane, both of Arlington, Mass.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne; a sister, Flossie; and a brother, Ross.

Burial will be in a family plot in Duncannon where a memorial service will be held.

GEORGE P. LOSCH
George P. Losch, 70, of Millerstown RR 2, Greenwood Twp., Juniata County, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at home.

He was born Nov. 9, 1932 at rural Millerstown to the late Pusey C. and Mary Margaret (Smeltz) Losch.

He was a heavy equipment operator for 17 years for Hempt Bros., Inc. of Camp Hill; a professional artist for 30 years, owning and resident artist of Heartland Gallery & Publishing Company, Thompsontown; a 1951 graduate of Greenwood High School, Millerstown; studied music at Penn State University, State College and Lebanon Valley College; a Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict and playing bass horn in the 1st Marine Corps Band, and served in the Air Force Reserves; a member of and former council president of Faith Lutheran Church, Richfield RR 1, Tennis Lodge 371, F&AM, Thompsontown; supporter of Ducks Unlimited, where he was artist of the year, and supported the Pennsylvania Wildlife and Pennsylvania Turkey federations; and named Perry County Artist of the Year.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Annamae Lengel Losch; four sons, pastor Pusey A. of Richfield RR 1, Michael E. and George A., both of Thompsontown, and Stuart M. of Port Royal; two daughters, Julie A. Barnes of Liverpool and Sarah L. Carvell of Millerstown RR 2; two sisters, Olive L. Troup of Seven Stars and Rosemary Beaver of Hershey; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John I., and a sister, Eleanor L. Hine.

Services were held Sept. 21 in his church with the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman officiating. Burial, with military honors by Juniata County Veterans Council, was in the church Cemetery.

Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, handled arrangements.

DENNIS E. STIPE
Dennis E. Stipe, 58, of Newport, formerly of Middletown, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

He was born Aug. 6, 1945 in Harrisburg to the late Clarence M. and Sarah E. (Troxell) Stipe.

He was employed as an electrician with Norfolk Southern Corporation; attended Middletown High School; served in the Navy during the Cuban Conflict at Guantanamo Bay; and a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 925, Millerstown.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Karen D. Smith Stipe; three sons, Scott M. Sr. of Fultonville, N.Y., Christopher A. of Halifax and Shawn R. of Newport; a daughter, April L. Stipe of Newport; a brother, Charles R. of Middletown; and seven grandchildren, Giovanna N., Scott M. Jr., Noah D. and Joshua A., all of Fultonville, Emmale G., E. Jake and Ella R., all of Halifax.

Services were held Sept. 17 in Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Hummelstown, with pastor Danny Linville officiating. Burial was in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

NANCY L. GANDY
Nancy L. Gandy, 71, of New Bloomfield died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield.

She was born Nov. 19, 1931 in Lancaster County to the late Melvin and Annie (Fogie) Martin.

She was retired from Cumberland-Perry Association for Retarded Children and formerly was employed by DeCoven Diner.

Surviving are her children, Sheryl L. Van Order of Mt. Joy, Richard B. Dicks Jr. of Harborcreek, Erie County, Michael W. Gandy and Kathy A. Gandy, both of Duncannon; a sister, Doris Fasig of Lady Lake, Fla.; a stepsister, Brenda Earl of the Poconos; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Martin Jr., and two sisters, Janet Weaver and Arlamae Martin.

Services were held in Ronald C.L. Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon. Burial was in Lancaster County.

HERBERT E. MANGLE
Herbert Eugene “Herbie” Mangle, 78, of Locust Street, New Buffalo, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 in Hershey Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 29, 1924 in Liverpool to the late Ross and Bertha (Willi) Mangle.

He retired in 1969 after more than 20 years as a federal clerk for Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio; educated in Liverpool schools; an Army veteran of World War II and awarded the Purple Heart; a Lutheran; a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marysville, American Legion Post 364, Liverpool, Loyal Order of Moose, Millerstown, Forty and Eight of Chambers Hill, Oriental Sportsman’s Association and former president of Meadow Grove Sportsman’s Association, Newport; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, the outdoors and cooking.

He was the widower Dorothy Rilley Mangle.

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Theresa Phillips Mangle; three daughters, Joann Mobley of Dayton, Ohio, Hope M. Mangle of Duncannon and Janett E. Weaver of Punxsutawney; a brother, Richard C. of Mt. Pleasant Mills RR 1; a sister, Charlotte Kammler of Liverpool RR 1; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert E. Jr.; a brother, Roscoe; three sisters, Thelma Reynolds, Hazel A. Keck and Catherine Barthel; and a great-grandson, Silas L. Wolfersberger.

Services were held Sept. 24 in Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with the Rev. Dr. Alan Wenrich officiating.

RODNEY N. TAYLOR
Rodney N. Taylor, 78, of S. Second Street, Newport, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at home.

He was born Sept. 18, 1925 in Minnesota to the late Charles L. and Selma (Olson) Taylor.

He was the retired owner of the Town Tavern, Newport; a Marine veteran of World War II; a lifetime member of Newport Social Order of Owls, American Legion Post 177, Newport, VFW Post 34, Newport, and Loyal Order of Moose 925, Millerstown; and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores “Sis” Taylor; a son, Rodney L. Mullen of Newport; a brother, Charles of Loysville; a sister, Arlene Rhoades of Newport; and a grandchild.

Services were held Sept. 23 in David M. Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Burial, with military honors by New Bloomfield VFW Post 7463 and Newport American Legion Post 177, was in Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown.

PEGGY L. HOWARD-SNYDER
Peggy L. “Margaret” Howard-Snyder, 63, of Mechanicsburg died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 in Hershey Medical Center.

She was a former employee of the Naval Supply Deport, Mechanicsburg; and a member of the Elks Club, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, all of Carlisle, and Women of the Moose, Millersburg.

Surviving are her husband, Harold W. Snyder Jr.; three daughters, Debora K. Fetter of Carlisle, Nancy L. Hughes of Duncannon and Peggy Sue Gessner of Enola; a son, Ronald B. Bluste Jr.; a sister, Rose Miller of Duncannon; a brother, Bud Wagner of Marysville; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry L. Bangert and Charles Ray Bluste.

Services were held Sept. 19 in Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville. Burial was in Perry Heights Cemetery, Marysville.

GEORGE C. MARTZ JR.
George Calvin Martz Jr., 35, of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Denver, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 at home.

He graduated in 1985 from Cocalico High School, Denver, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and golf team. He was a power lifter and an Eagle Scout. He graduated in 1989 from Dickinson College, Carlisle, where he majored in economics and political science. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and active in ROTC. In 1994, he earned a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University of California.

After college he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and served on active duty for 7 1/2 years. He was a veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm and attained the rank of captain.

He was confirmed into the Christian faith at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Denver. He was a member of VFW Post 3376, Ephrata. After leaving the Army, he was a production manager for Rubbermaid Corp. in Greenville, Texas, and last worked for the Edward Jones investment firm in St. Louis in the retirement and sales department.

He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football fan, and enjoyed reading, golfing, fishing and playing chess and cards.

Surviving are his wife, Jennifer Sutton Martz; two children, Katie and George Calvin III, both at home; his parents, Rev. George C. and Phyllis Crytzer Martz of New Bloomfield; and two sisters, Christine Martz of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Victoria Velez of Mechanicsburg.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Judge and Mrs. Harry B. Crytzer, and paternal grandparents, Guy and Frances Martz.

A graveside service, with military honors, was held Sept. 22 in Bloomfield Cemetery, with his father officiating.

A memorial service was held Sept. 23 in St. John’s United Church of Christ, Denver, with the Rev. David Brumbach and Rev. (retired) John Oliphant officiating.

BEATRICE M. AITKIN
Beatrice Mae Aitkin, 84, of 5B Street, Milroy, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 in Lewistown Hospital.

She was born April 20, 1919 in Burnham to the late Harry Porter Bailey and Audrey Ellen (Harshberger) Bailey Eaton.

She was the widow of Harry Thomas Aitkin, who died Dec. 2, 1978.

Surviving are a son, James David Aitkin of Newport RR 3; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services were held Sept. 25 in Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Robert L. Zorn officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy.
