CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hannah Baer Rumsby, 94, of 2075 Scotland Ave. and formerly of Hutchinson, Kan., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Menno Haven Menno Village, Chambersburg.

Born Feb. 24, 1905, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Adam Herr and Bertie Metz Baer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rumsby, in 1984.

She attended Goshen College and was a graduate of LaJunta Nursing School.

She was a registered nurse and owned and operated two nursing homes, Hillcrest Convalescent Home at the site of the current American Legion on Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, and Garlock Nursing Home on South Prospect Street, Hagerstown.

She is survived by a sister, Bertie Baer Shenk of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, John M. Baer of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Grace Baer; and four brothers, Martin Baer, Jacob Baer, Adam Baer and Amos Baer.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Paradise Mennonite Church, Hagerstown. The Bishop Darrell Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Paradise Mennonite Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to 1 p.m. before the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 322 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Benjamin R. Bakner

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - Benjamin Richard Bakner, 66, of 3722 Corls Ridge Road, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1932, in Fairview, Pa., he was the son of the late Benjamin Bakner and Lela Patterson Monn. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, the late Samuel "B.J." Monn.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Fleda F. Baker Bakner, in 1998. They were married Dec. 22, 1973.

He was employed by Paul G. Kahl, delivering coal and fuel oil for many years until his retirement in 1976.

He served in the U.S. Army and in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1950 to 1960.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post No. 15; William Max McLaughlin VFW Post No. 695; Order of the Owls Nest No. 1073, all of Waynesboro; and a life member of Blue Ridge Sportsmens Club.

He is survived by seven daughters, Linda Kiehl of St. Petersburg, Fla., Judy Brown, Bonnie Stine and Tammy Wagaman, all of South Mountain, Victoria Flagle of Tomstown, Pa., Penny Rhines of Waynesboro, Pa., and Donna D'Amore of Mont Alto, Pa.; three sons, Robert Bakner of Fairview, Pa., David Bakner of Waynesboro and Herman Voss of South Mountain; two brothers, Lawrence W. Patterson and John R. Monn Sr., both of Fairview; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and his former wife, Sally Whitmore Bakner.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Bakner; three grandchildren; a sister, Jean Monn; and two brothers, Clarence R. Patterson and Clark Patterson.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Wayne L. Kuhns and Pastor Dale R. Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Quincy Township, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth A. Wolford

CHOUTEAU, Okla. - Elizabeth A. "Betty" Wolford, 58, of Chouteau and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Meadow Brook Nursing Center in Oklahoma.

Born May 23, 1940, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Helen Lehman of Chambersburg and the late Clarence Lehman.

She had worked at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg for a number of years before transferring to Rock Island, Ill.

She is survived by two sons, Steve Brookens of Boiling Spring, Pa., and Tim Brookens of Chambersburg; three daughters, Gina Cline of Fort Campbell, Ky., Lisa Smith of Fayetteville, Pa., and Nikki Wolford of Chouteau; a brother, Robert Lehman of Bedford, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Ruth I. Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Friday one hour before the services at the funeral home.

Lucille B. Taylor

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Lucille B. Taylor, 73, of 9246 Oyer Drive, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Monday, May 3, 1999, at her home.

Born March 9, 1926, in Reidsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William S. and Margaret E. Waynick Burton.

She was a 1944 graduate of Reidsville High School and later graduated from business college.

She retired in 1984 after 30 years of service as a secretary for the Department of the Army. During her employment she worked in Salzburg, Austria and Verona, Italy. She was working at Fort Ritchie when she retired.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Waynesboro.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Calvin E. Taylor; one daughter, Sherry M. Taylor of Waynesboro; two sons, Robert E. Taylor of Waynesboro and John C. Taylor of Burke, Va.; one brother, Lindsey Burton of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Taylor; a sister, Margaret Neal; and a brother, Sidney Burton.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Carl L. Buterbaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert E. Hess

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Robert E. Hess, 73, of 5500 Lincoln Way East, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born May 4, 1926, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Emory J. and Etta Golden Hess.

He attended Foxhill and South Mountain Schools.

He worked at Frick Co., Waynesboro, and Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa., as a machinist. He also worked as a machinist at Wayne Tool Co., Waynesboro. He later owned and operated Hess Shell Station, South Mountain, Pa. Prior to retiring in 1986, he worked in the Maintenance Department of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg.

He served with the Army in Europe during World War II.

He was a member of Baltimore Church of God, South Mountain.

He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Doris E. Berklite Hess; three daughters, Marion P. Kauffman of South Mountain, Nancy L. Naugle of Mont Alto, Pa., and Donna E. Potter of Hagerstown; three sons, Donald E. Hess and Marvin L. Hess, both of Waynesboro, and Clinton E. Hess of Chambersburg; three sisters, Betty Binkerd of Fayetteville, Edna Foust of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Gladys Beltz of Waynesboro; two brothers, Clarence Hess of South Mountain and Paul Hess of Chambersburg; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Wagaman, Janet Kauffman and Verna "Verdie" Verdier; a brother, Charles Hess; and an infant brother.

Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Roy C. Daywalt will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain, with graveside military services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post No. 1599, Honor Guard of Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phillip J. Derr

WOMELSDORF, Pa. - Phillip James Derr, 58, of 56 E. High St., Womelsdorf, and formerly of 26 High St., Hagerstown, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at his home.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of Emma V. Breeder Derr Cauffman of Hancock and the late William Oscar Derr.

He was employed at Reading Plating and Polishing Works Inc., Reading, Pa., as an electrical plating engineer since 1959.

He was a member of Reamstown Church of God, Reamstown, Pa.

He was an active member of Rainbow Fire Company, Reading.

He is survived by one daughter, Karen Lee Derr Hutton of Shillington, Pa.; two sons, Kevin James Derr of Lititz, Pa. and Kurt Phillip Derr of Moknton, Pa; three sisters, Jennie D. Derr and Sarah V. Derr Steavens, both of Hagerstown; and Marylan M. Freeden Kochera of Hancock and eight grandchildren.

He was the former husband of Wanda Canfield Derr of Fairplay.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Julia Gay Derr Smith Kline and one brother, Arthur William Derr.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 27, at Charles Evans Cemetery at Centre Avenue, Reading.

Arrangements were by Lamm & Whitman Funeral Home, Wernersville, Pa.
