FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Elizabeth Irene "Renie" Reed, 86, of Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and formerly of 11197 Anthony Highway, Waynesboro, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Quincy, Pa., she was the daughter of the late David B. and Marcy C. Monn Mentzer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamont L. Reed Jr., in 1963. They were married April 11, 1941.

She was employed at Waynesboro Knitting Mill as a machine operator. She also worked part time at Waynesboro Marble and Granite.

She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, Waynesboro, and taught Sunday School at Blue Rock United Brethren in Christ Church, Tomstown, Pa.

She is survived by a son, Kermit L. Reed of Mont Alto, Pa.; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Arnold E. Wagaman will officiate. Burial will be in Quincy Cemetery, Quincy.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daniel E. Bittinger

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Daniel E. Bittinger, 83, of 112 Maple St., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Oct. 7, 1915, in Mont Alto, he was the son of the late Daniel C. and Emma Miner Bittinger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel A. Swope Bittinger, in 1995. They were married July 3, 1941.

He was a 1934 graduate of Quincy High School.

He was employed as a licensed master plumber with plumbing contractors in Chambersburg. Prior to retiring in June 1980, he was supervisor of plumbing and heating at Wilson College in Chambersburg for 11 years.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mont Alto.

He was a member of Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro.

He is survived by four sons, Daniel Lee Bittinger of Marion, Pa., Dennis R. Bittinger and Bernard E. Bittinger, both of Waynesboro, and James A. Bittinger of Fayetteville, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Darlene R. Williams of Mont Alto; a sister, Jean Baker of Mont Alto; nine grandchildren; a niece, and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Monn and Helen Gehr.

Services will be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 339, Mont Alto, PA 17237.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Stephen Demes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Stephen Demes, 80, of 2321 Philadelphia Ave., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born June 4, 1918, in Daisytown, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Toth Demes.

He retired in 1974 from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. He previously was employed at Raritan Arsenal in Metuchen, N.J.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a topographical map maker with the Corps of Engineers in the European Theater during World War II.

He was a member of Magyar Reformed Church in New Brunswick, N.J.

He was a member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Chambersburg; AMVETS in Martinsburg, W.Va.; Detrich-Brechbill Post 612, American Legion in St. Thomas, Pa.; and Shippensburg Radio Control Model Aircraft Club in Shippensburg, Pa. He was a ham radio operator with the call sign "WASAIR, " and a member of Quarter Century Wireless Club. He was a member of New Jersey organizations associated with hunting dogs and field trials. He had been a member of Civil Air Patrol.

He is survived by his wife, Marietta "Nan" Muller Demes, three sons, Joseph Demes of Chambersburg, Ronald Demes of Key West, Fla., and James Demes of Biglerville, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Demes.

Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Springs Road, Chambersburg. Chaplain Charles L. McGuire will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg with military services by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599, VFW Honor Guard.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary L. Knupp

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mary Lucille "Lou" Lowe Knupp, 84, of 66 Mount Vernon Terrace, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born May 16, 1914, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Andrew L. and Mary Reid Lowe.

She was a 1932 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

Her husband, Arthur N. Knupp, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died in 1987. They were married in 1936.

She was employed as a nurse's aide at Waynesboro Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She was a member of South Chapter 2977 AARP, and National AARP, and volunteered with the American Red Cross.

She is survived by one daughter, Carole White of Pittsburgh; one son, Tom Knupp of York, Pa.; one sister, Martha Staley of Valley Forge, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Romaine Ely and Ruth Noel; and two brothers, Reid Lowe and Charles Lowe.

Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 225 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Eunice G. Smith

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Eunice G. Smith, 100, of Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and formerly of 309 S. Born May 1, 1898, in Williamson, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Bruce and Carrie Spielman Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Smith, in 1975.

During the 1940s, she and her husband owned and operated Blue and White Restaurant of Mercersburg. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Fry Coal and Stone Co. and Potomac Edison Co., both of Mercersburg.

She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mercersburg.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517 of Mercersburg.

She is survived by two sons, C. Douglas Smith of Fayetteville and Allan D. Smith of Mercersburg; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter; two sons and two grandsons.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church of Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael R. Brendle will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour before the services at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8 Linden Ave., Mercersburg, PA 17236.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg.
