Born Aug. 21, 1907, in Bellwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Pearl Hagerity Root.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Pearl Foreman of Chambersburg; one brother, Robert Root of Colonial Heights, Va.; two granddaughters, Brenda Hoover and Linda Wallick, both of Chambersburg; one grandson, Garnet Foreman Jr. of Chambersburg; five great-granddaughters; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Sarah M. Rice

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Sarah M. Rice, 88, of Mount Piney and formerly of 5312 Greenvillage Road, Chambersburg, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999.

Born Feb. 8, 1910, in Letterkenny Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John A. and Martha E. Jones Myers.

She was employed by Tracy Fashions, Chambersburg, as a seamstress from 1959 to 1976.

She was a member of Salem United Brethren Church, Chambersburg, and taught Sunday school.

She is survived by two daughters, V. Almeda Snider of Chambersburg and Darlene Heckman of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sons, J. LeRoy Rice and Dennis E. Rice, both of Chambersburg; one sister, Mary Brown of Chambersburg; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dolores Black; five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. John W. Shubert will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg; and on Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Salem United Brethren Church.

James W. Metz

TROY, Ohio - James W. Born Dec. 3, 1919, in Armstrong, Pa., he was the son of the late Peter and Maggie Suzanne Downing Metz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara L. Shick Metz, in 1984.

He attended master mechanic schooling.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He formerly was employed by Holloway Co.

He was a member of American Legion and VFW of Hancock.

He is survived by two daughters, Sally A. Shaeffer and Mary Alice Metz, both of Troy; a son, James A. Metz of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; three brothers, Henry Metz of New Castle, Pa., Floyd Metz of Distant, Pa., and Roscoe Metz of Puguisne, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Bess Johnson, Mae Johnson, Helen Davis and Gladys Cahill; and a brother, Church Metz.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Raisley Funeral Home, Prospect, Pa. The Rev. Dan Reuter will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mount Chestnut, Pa.

The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Baird Funeral Home, Troy; and will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home in Prospect.

William Benjamin Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - William "Bill" Benjamin Jr., 77, of 332 Fairview Ave., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at his home.

Born March 14, 1921, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late William Sr. and Margaret Jane Crist Benjamin.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Western Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945.

He was employed as a machinist at Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro. Prior to retiring in 1986, he worked in the Borough of Waynesboro's park maintenance department.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Reberdia E. Cool Benjamin, whom he married Dec. 24, 1941; two daughters, Barbara A. Shank of Quincy, Pa., and Donna K. Speer of Waynesboro; a son, Jeff Benjamin of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy L. Benjamin; and a sister, Jane F. Benjamin.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Summit Home Health, 176 S. Coldbrook Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.

Olive M. Keefer

BIG COVE TANNERY, Pa. - Olive Margaret Keefer, 88, of Big Cove Tannery, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Fulton County Medical Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1910, in Big Cove Tannery, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Harris Bishop.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses G. Keefer, in 1986.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Edna Helman of Fort Loudon, Pa., and Hazel Mellott of Big Cove Tannery; four sons, John Keefer, Bill Keefer, and Kenneth Keefer, all of Big Cove Tannery, and Roy Keefer of Pierron, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters and a granddaughter.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg, Pa. The Rev. Chalmer Hann will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Friday from 2 p.m.

Allen A. Corwell Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Allen A. Corwell Sr., 76, a resident of Manor Care Health Services, and formerly of 4837 Burkholder Road, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Manor Care.

Born April 24, 1922, in Fayetteville, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Blanche McNew Corwell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah M. Yeager Corwell, in 1997.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, where he was a supervisor. He formerly was employed by Hudson Oil Co. in Chambersburg and at Penn Mar Oil Co. in Shippensburg, Pa.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Harry D. Zeigler Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greencastle, Pa.; and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by one son, Allen A. Corwell Jr. of Chambersburg; five sisters, Mary Wampler, Anna Toms, Maxine Bietsch, Evelyn Seaman and Yvonne Elser, all of Chambersburg; one brother, Richard Corwell of Chambersburg; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Art Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Cemetery in Chambersburg, with military graveside services by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
