KNAVEL - Ellsworth D., 84, formerly of Elton, went to be with the Lord peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on June 25, 2006, at Laurel Crest Manor. Born Dec. 6, 1921, in Elton, son of the late George and Goldie (Shaffer) Knavel. Survived by daughters, Sharon, wife of Albert Bader, Elton, and Cynthia DiAscro, Mifflinburg; also grandchildren, Joe DiAscro III, Jeremy Bader, Dominick, David and Angela DiAscro; and great-grandson, Dakota DiAscro. Brother of Lois Faye, widow of Ralph Adams, Ebensburg. Ellsworth served in the CCC from 1942-1946, where he excelled in office and clerical work and was honorably discharged after four years. He retired from U.S. Steel after 30 years' service. He also was an avid gardener and reader. Visitation and interment at Richland Cemetery are private, but family and friends are invited to attend memorial service at 1 p.m. on July 8, 2006, at Meek -- Dalla Valle Funeral Home Inc., Windber. The Rev. Ernest Heller will officiate. Memorials may be made to Home Nursing Agency, Suite 200, 118 Ebony Road, Ebensburg, Pa., 15931, in memory of Ellsworth Knavel.

LANE - Burnice W.

He was born Dec. 16, 1907, in Berlin, Pa., to the late Ida (Suder) and Jacob Lane. Burnice graduated from Berlin High School and was drafted into the Army during World War II, where he fought in Sicily, Austria and Germany. Later, he worked in Greensburg, Pa., and Latrobe, Pa., as a pharmacist's assistant. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, shopping and cooking. He was a bachelor all his life. During his later years, he lived with his niece, Phyllis Toney, in Toledo, Ohio, for one year and with his great-niece, Ruth Kehring, in Akron, Ohio, for the past 3 1/2 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Ralph Lane; and sister, Hilda Lane Apple. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Frankie Lane Jr. of Bowie, Md.; Sally Lane of Berlin, Pa.; Bob Apple of Fallentimber, Pa.; Paul W. Toney of Mesa, Ariz.; Earl W. Toney of Monocalve, Ohio; Nancy, Kathy and Debbie of Pennsylvania; Penny Hamburg of Dayton, Ohio; and Scott Toney of Toledo, Ohio. She was the former treasurer of the Leidy Township Campers Association in Clinton County. Hilda was the widow of Reagus V. McKenna, whom she married Aug. 21, 1948, and he preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1992. Mrs. McKenna is survived by son, Robert R. McKenna, husband of Ann Langan, Levittown; grandson, Ryan McKenna, Levittown; brother, Robert Frazier, husband of Delaine, Schellsburg; niece, Karen, wife of Steven Baas, New Paris; nephew, Robert Frazier, husband of Tammy Paul, New Paris. Hilda is also survived by a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral service will be held at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, with the Rev. James Espenshade officiating. Burial will be in the Schellsburg Cemetery, Schellsburg. Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home. Mary enjoyed shopping at the outlets and local stores. She will be remembered as a kind and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Brother of Susan Hudak, Windber; Ann, wife of Andrew Ferko, Central City; Matilda Potochar, Indian Lake; Paul, and wife, Carol, Hooversville; Steve, and wife, Shirl, Jerome; Margaret, wife of Andrew Matey, Hooversville; Josephine, wife of Tom Kounas, Mechanicsburg; Mike, and wife, Helen, Stoystown; and Barbara, wife of Lloyd Manges, Hollsopple. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Ida Zborovancik, Central City; Stella Mrozowski, Cairnbrook; and Blanche Olbrys, New York. U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Retired employee of Bethlehem Steel, Johnstown, car shop. Member of VFW and American Legion, also Windber Polish Club and Polish Falcons. Also member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Windber, where Joseph was a member of the Holy Name Society and where funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Very Rev. Leonard E. Voytek, V.F. Committal, St. Anthony Mausoleum, Windber, with veterans honors by Windber VFW. Friends were received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber, where rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., and where vigil for the deceased was held. Joseph was a volunteer at Memorial Medical Center, Windber American Legion and many church functions. He was a longtime Steeler and Pirate fan and was an avid follower of Windber Rambler sports, where his grandson, Kris, participates. Joe enjoyed polka music and loved being around family and friends.

He is also survived by his brother and sisters, William Batdorf, Chittenango, N.Y.; Irene Palmer, Mesa, Ariz.; and Mildred Doran, Strasburg, Pa.; also by numerous nieces and nephews. He served in seven campaigns with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired conductor from the Pennsylvania Railroad after 36 years of service. He was a member of Patton Presbyterian Church, John White VFW Post 779 and Walter McCoy American Legion Post 614. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling and his family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Inc., 1004 N. Fifth Ave., Patton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Patton Presbyterian Church, by Pastor Nadine Kinkead. Committal, Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the American Lung Association. Military rites will be accorded by John White VFW Post 779 and Walter McCoy American Legion Post 614.
